:00:17. > :00:20.A third of 18-year-olds apply for uni, well behind

:00:21. > :00:26.And part of Bristol has one of the lowest rates in the country.

:00:27. > :00:28.Here's our political editor, Paul Barltrop.

:00:29. > :00:30.Bristol and the South West are prosperous -

:00:31. > :00:36.The south of the city is less well-off, and in educational terms

:00:37. > :00:40.Fewer than one in five children growing up around here apply

:00:41. > :00:45.The contrast with next-door North Somerset is stark.

:00:46. > :00:47.Youngsters in places like Long Ashton, just

:00:48. > :00:50.across the Vale, are two and a half times more likely to

:00:51. > :00:56.This is one of just two secondary schools in the South Bristol

:00:57. > :01:03.Ashton Park encourages pupils to go on to higher

:01:04. > :01:11.It just seemed a bit too daunting, and obviously it's really expensive

:01:12. > :01:14.nowadays to go to university, so I just planned on doing my

:01:15. > :01:16.education here and then moving on to employment.

:01:17. > :01:19.I didn't feel like university was the best option for me at all.

:01:20. > :01:22.Cos I don't really enjoy school, don't really get on with it.

:01:23. > :01:24.The region's universities would dearly like to attract more

:01:25. > :01:35.Certainly if I look at Bristol in particular wards,

:01:36. > :01:37.we have appalling pull-through from populations

:01:38. > :01:38.into not just higher education and universities,

:01:39. > :01:43.but into further education and higher skills education.

:01:44. > :01:46.Many head for what is on offer at this south Bristol

:01:47. > :01:50.There to explain why she left full-time education is Casey Abrams.

:01:51. > :01:53.I think the big unknown with uni was actually the fear of uni,

:01:54. > :01:56.of how I would afford to pay for that and how much debt

:01:57. > :01:59.I would have been in afterwards, which is kind of what threw me more

:02:00. > :02:01.into doing an apprenticeship, because obviously I wouldn't

:02:02. > :02:08.A decent opportunity, reckon experts and politicians, but sending more

:02:09. > :02:21.we've got to universities, Exeter down the road and Bath down the

:02:22. > :02:28.road, and it's a shameful statistic. -- we've got two universities.

:02:29. > :02:30.But with schools funding under increasing pressure

:02:31. > :02:32.across the South West, getting pupils to aim

:02:33. > :02:35.Police in Bristol are appealing for witnesses, after a car

:02:36. > :02:37.hit a cyclist and drove off without stopping.

:02:38. > :02:40.The accident happened this afternoon on the A38 Gloucester Road, leaving

:02:41. > :02:49.Just a fortnight after major heart surgery, Cheltenham Town's manager

:02:50. > :02:51.Gary Johnson could be back at the club tomorrow

:02:52. > :03:03.Gary's had heart surgery before, but nothing on the scale of a triple

:03:04. > :03:05.bypass, so he does need to take it slowly!

:03:06. > :03:11.He caught up with our sports editor, Alistair Durden.

:03:12. > :03:13.There have been plenty of well-wishers, and from right

:03:14. > :03:22.It's only two weeks since Gary's surgery, but the 61-year-old

:03:23. > :03:30.You don't want something like this, but when something like this

:03:31. > :03:42.happens, it sort of makes you appreciate the work that

:03:43. > :03:46.you're in, the industry that you're in - it's a pretty close-knit

:03:47. > :03:51.family and it's not just the effort of getting the cards,

:03:52. > :04:00.it's the effort of the words that people could in the cards that

:04:01. > :04:02.are overwhelming, and soon I'll get round everybody

:04:03. > :04:15.Gary's operation was performed by Dr Alan Brian, whose son Joe

:04:16. > :04:18.And of course where Gary's son Lee is the head coach.

:04:19. > :04:22.We had moments where I could talk with Dr Brian about football,

:04:23. > :04:24.but he was very concentrated on my heart as opposed

:04:25. > :04:26.to my managerial career or Joe's football career.

:04:27. > :04:28.I stopped short of saying if I don't come through this

:04:29. > :04:30.then Joe will never play for Bristol City again!

:04:31. > :04:33.As soon as I came round from the operation, the doctor

:04:34. > :04:36.shook me up and said, Mr Johnson, you have to wake up no,

:04:37. > :04:43.Gary's current club Cheltenham haven't won a game

:04:44. > :04:46.Although truthfully he has already started working again from home.

:04:47. > :04:49.A couple of days ago I needed to speak to the strikers

:04:50. > :04:52.because I felt that wasn't quite performing and I could go

:04:53. > :04:55.there so I still have enough respect that can bring them here.

:04:56. > :04:58.They all came here and we had a chat and I should videos

:04:59. > :05:01.They all came here and we had a chat, and we showed them videos

:05:02. > :05:04.and things they can improve on, and I was pleased that

:05:05. > :05:09.We're in a delicate situation at the moment, I know it's just

:05:10. > :05:15.when my wife Florence Nightingale decides that I can get back

:05:16. > :05:18.to the football, then as soon as I feel ready I'll go back

:05:19. > :05:22.A convoy of a hundred yellow cars will roar into the Cotswold village

:05:23. > :05:24.of Bibury tomorrow; it's in support of a pensioner.

:05:25. > :05:27.Peter Maddox lives in one of the most photographed

:05:28. > :05:29.areas in the country - but some tourists didn't like his

:05:30. > :05:32.yellow car being parked there, and claimed it ruined their shots.

:05:33. > :05:34.It was later badly damaged, with the word MOVE

:05:35. > :05:37.Steve Knibbs went along to the village.

:05:38. > :05:38.Yeah, here we are, people have travelled

:05:39. > :05:41.from all over the country - Thirsk, East, West Yorkshire,

:05:42. > :05:43.even just four miles away in Northleach to be

:05:44. > :05:46.This convoy of 100 yellow cards proving that

:05:47. > :05:47.bright is beautiful - isn't that right?

:05:48. > :05:50.- is going to be here tomorrow, coming through the village.

:05:51. > :05:53.If you want to see it, it's going to be at around 10:30.

:05:54. > :05:58.All in honour of course of Peter Maddox, and the problems

:05:59. > :06:01.that he had with his little yellow car on the famous Arlington Road.

:06:02. > :06:05.Peter, what has that support from the public meant to you?

:06:06. > :06:11.And what's nice now is you're going to become a colour,

:06:12. > :06:12.because Vauxhall are going to name...

:06:13. > :06:25.So a great day in prospect tomorrow - the village will have

:06:26. > :06:27.Steve Knibbs, BBC Points West, in Bibury.

:06:28. > :06:29.That's your late update from the West.

:06:30. > :06:31.Your weekend weather coming up now with Ian,

:06:32. > :06:35.Hello and a very good evening to you, we're going to split

:06:36. > :06:38.the weekend quite conveniently into two separate halves of weather

:06:39. > :06:41.- Saturday is going to be a story of sunny spells and showers,

:06:42. > :06:43.some of those will be quite heavy in places,

:06:44. > :06:45.and conversely on Sunday after a chilly start it's

:06:46. > :06:48.going to be dry and settled day, I suspect actually with plenty

:06:49. > :06:54.Now, through the rest of tonight we're going to find gradually a band

:06:55. > :06:57.of showery rain which has been affecting western areas just

:06:58. > :07:00.creeping its way further eastwards - temperatures broadly about 8 or 9

:07:01. > :07:04.And by that stage, albeit many of you getting up to a dry

:07:05. > :07:06.start there will already be some showers around, and that's really

:07:07. > :07:08.settlng the tone then through the rest of Saturday,

:07:09. > :07:11.with some sunny spells proving quite prolonged if you're lucky,

:07:12. > :07:13.in other cases though you will be getting some showers

:07:14. > :07:15.which will be heavy, possibly thundery in places,

:07:16. > :07:17.and slowly, slowly fading away through the course

:07:18. > :07:21.Now, temperatures tomorrow will be a bit down on today,

:07:22. > :07:23.so about 13 to 15 Celsius - pleasant enough, mind

:07:24. > :07:26.you, in the sunshine - and it will certainly be that way

:07:27. > :07:28.on Sunday, with much more in the way of sunshine around.

:07:29. > :07:36.That's it from me; here's a look at your national forecast.

:07:37. > :07:43.Hello. There the weekend is here and Sunday looks like being the better

:07:44. > :07:47.day of the two. We're going to start the weekend, a new month, with

:07:48. > :07:51.sunshine and April showers. Those fade away overnight. Saturday night

:07:52. > :07:54.could be chilly. It points to a fine day on Sunday. This picture was

:07:55. > :07:58.taken by a weather watcher to end the day in Dundee. This one is

:07:59. > :08:00.probably my favourite of the day. This was taken at Yarmouth in the
