:00:08. > :00:15.Under pressure - hundreds of GPs in the region say they've had enough

:00:16. > :00:21.Why did these amateur players get a rugby lesson

:00:22. > :00:38.Thanks Rowling January, the enthusiasm is fantastic. Dry weather

:00:39. > :00:42.looking step to continue, but will it last Easter? Join me towards the

:00:43. > :00:44.end of the programme. Two out of five GPs

:00:45. > :00:49.in the South West say they intend to quit in the next five years,

:00:50. > :00:52.according to a new survey. 2,000 family doctors took

:00:53. > :00:55.part in the research. NHS England says it's working hard

:00:56. > :00:58.to try to support doctors Here's our Health Correspondent,

:00:59. > :01:02.Matthew Hill. Dr Michael Sproat is starting

:01:03. > :01:05.a new life this week, which he hopes will mean seeing more

:01:06. > :01:07.of his family. in Downend and he will now be doing

:01:08. > :01:14.endoscopies for a private company I would start at half-past eight

:01:15. > :01:17.and finish sometimes after nine What effect would this have

:01:18. > :01:23.on you and your family? Difficult to put that

:01:24. > :01:27.into words really, but a sense that my career was very important,

:01:28. > :01:31.patients were very important to me as well, but really, equally,

:01:32. > :01:34.my family has to be prioritised. Dr Sproat is part of a trend -

:01:35. > :01:38.and according to a survey out today. It's warning we face

:01:39. > :01:42.a severe shortfall in family years, as two in five family doctors

:01:43. > :01:47.questioned plan to leave by then. To be honest I think there needs

:01:48. > :01:53.to be a fundamental change in the approach of government

:01:54. > :01:58.towards healthcare in the UK. The system at the minute

:01:59. > :02:01.is underfunded. GPs account for 90% of patient

:02:02. > :02:04.contact with the NHS, yet they only receive 7%

:02:05. > :02:08.of its budget. Hotwell Surgery shut

:02:09. > :02:12.its doors last month. of family practices to close

:02:13. > :02:17.in recent years in the West. Tens of thousands of patients have

:02:18. > :02:21.had to find a GP elsewhere. New pension arrangements which have

:02:22. > :02:25.come in this month will mean the problem is only going to get

:02:26. > :02:29.worse, as some GPs will be better off financially

:02:30. > :02:32.if they retire early. NHS England says it's

:02:33. > :02:36.already working to support to support existing GPs

:02:37. > :02:38.by encouraging people back into the We are looking at how we support

:02:39. > :02:43.primary care with a whole range of professions, because,

:02:44. > :02:47.clearly, general practice is important, but also supporting that

:02:48. > :02:49.with pharmacists, nurse practitioners and

:02:50. > :02:51.other professionals. In November 5,000 patients were told

:02:52. > :02:54.they would have to find a new doctor's surgery,

:02:55. > :02:56.because their practice And with both an ageing population

:02:57. > :03:07.with more health needs "the doctor will see

:03:08. > :03:11.you now" could become a case of "the doctor will see you at some

:03:12. > :03:13.point in the future". Dr Clare Jerada works

:03:14. > :03:18.for a confidential service which helps GPs who are suffering

:03:19. > :03:20.from mental health problems. have got to this stage.

:03:21. > :03:29.the preswsures on family doctors We've got to this stage because,

:03:30. > :03:32.rightly, over the last decade we've invested in hospitals,

:03:33. > :03:34.consultants, we've also the community and into

:03:35. > :03:39.general practice, but what we haven't done

:03:40. > :03:41.is put any additional resource

:03:42. > :03:42.into general practices. We've put a slight amount,

:03:43. > :03:45.but not in anyway in comparison to what the secondary

:03:46. > :03:47.care, the hospital system, has had. Therefore what I've seen is that GPs

:03:48. > :03:51.are under an enormously increased workload, enormously complex

:03:52. > :03:55.patients, without the resources to Whereas 15 years ago, I might see 15

:03:56. > :04:02.patients in the morning But surely GPs know the kind

:04:03. > :04:09.of profession it is when they get in into it,

:04:10. > :04:13.that the pressure levels are high? Of course, we thrive

:04:14. > :04:18.on pressure, but this isn't about thriving on pressure

:04:19. > :04:20.this is about actually. They are taking their own lives,

:04:21. > :04:30.it's causing depression, anxiety, post-dramatic stress

:04:31. > :04:32.disorder, so it's not good enough to say, "You thrive on pressure,

:04:33. > :04:35.therefore go off without any Do you think NHS England

:04:36. > :04:39.are doing enough? It's called the the Five-Year

:04:40. > :04:48.Forward Plan and hopefully it's not going to be

:04:49. > :04:51.too little, too late. I am hopeful that because NHS

:04:52. > :04:55.England has put additional resources in, that the cavalry

:04:56. > :05:00.is just around the corner and if my profession can just hang on, I think

:05:01. > :05:06.things will get slightly easier. I also think that patients

:05:07. > :05:09.have a responsibility. They have a responsibility

:05:10. > :05:11.to self-care, to go to the pharmacist, to look online

:05:12. > :05:13.and also a responsibility to acknowledge that GPs

:05:14. > :05:23.are under enormous pressure. For GPs and for health

:05:24. > :05:26.care and for patients? They're going to have

:05:27. > :05:32.to go somewhere. But it's not just

:05:33. > :05:35.that, we sort people out, we sort out all these complex

:05:36. > :05:38.issues, we sort out their benefits, If we don't exist,

:05:39. > :05:44.you'll get massive queues to A and I'm afraid

:05:45. > :05:48.that the rest of the NHS will just In other news, the parents of a five

:05:49. > :05:59.year-old girl from Bristol who died from meningitis after being wrongly

:06:00. > :06:02.diagnosed have been awarded The on-call GP did not admit

:06:03. > :06:10.liability and the case We noticed that she had a rash

:06:11. > :06:20.on her chest and on her legs, so I They told me that it

:06:21. > :06:28.was just a bug, but Kelsey Smart was just five years

:06:29. > :06:36.old when mum Hannah realised I've got to live for the rest

:06:37. > :06:41.of my life without her, the hospital quicker,

:06:42. > :06:49.but I trusted these doctors. She was vomiting and had a rash

:06:50. > :07:04.on her chest. Her mum drove her to hospital knowing things

:07:05. > :07:07.were more serious, but had to pull over when Kelsey began

:07:08. > :07:09.to have a fit and dial 999. We were told the same day

:07:10. > :07:16.that it was meningitis and she A three-week old baby had heart,

:07:17. > :07:22.and another baby had her lungs and the nightmare began,

:07:23. > :07:27.living without her. the out-of-hours GP,

:07:28. > :07:36.who has never admitted liability. But Kelsey's family believe her

:07:37. > :07:40.condition should have been picked up and want other parents to know

:07:41. > :07:44.the signs of the disease so they can An amateur rugby team near Bath have

:07:45. > :07:57.been given a special training session tonight -

:07:58. > :07:59.from the head coach Avon Vale RFC, based in Bathford,

:08:00. > :08:04.won a competition to get some Here he is, watching them in action

:08:05. > :08:22.a little earlier - and afterwards Firstly guys thanks for having me

:08:23. > :08:25.down here. The enthusiasm is fantastic and some of the general

:08:26. > :08:32.skill work is fantastic, really good. Just a couple of things you

:08:33. > :08:36.can improve, and your coach has been talking about it. Just keep your

:08:37. > :08:41.depth in attack. Make sure you what you do in your warm up goes into

:08:42. > :08:46.your game. The better you play the more fun it is, because when you win

:08:47. > :08:53.it is fine and the beer always taste better or the cider? You play rugby

:08:54. > :08:58.because you enjoy it and you'll enjoy it better if you win. There's

:08:59. > :09:06.obviously a lot of good things going so keep enjoying it. Thank you guys,

:09:07. > :09:13.Cheers. The language has been better at this station session, can opinion

:09:14. > :09:14.with those little bits of information, there were a member

:09:15. > :09:16.this for a long long time. Avon Vale are taking

:09:17. > :09:19.on Melksham in their next game, so I'm sure they'll have a few

:09:20. > :09:22.new tricks up their sleeves! Now, before we leave you,

:09:23. > :09:26.just a reminder that the vote for the new West of England Mayor

:09:27. > :09:29.gets ever closer, and we're going to be introducing

:09:30. > :09:31.you to all the candidates. We've spoken to all those standing

:09:32. > :09:34.in the contest and you can read more about their views,

:09:35. > :09:38.on our special web page - you'll We're back tomorrow, but for now,

:09:39. > :10:00.I'll say goodnight and leave Good evening everybody there is

:10:01. > :10:03.minute you light showers around this evening but you'll be hard pressed

:10:04. > :10:08.to find any rain tomorrow. It's looking like another dry day. Again

:10:09. > :10:16.varying amounts of cloud competing with some brightness and sunshine.

:10:17. > :10:20.It would be as breezy as today. For the rest of tonight temperatures

:10:21. > :10:25.could drop down to three or four Celsius and any clearer skies

:10:26. > :10:31.lasting long enough. There will be varying amounts of cloud in the

:10:32. > :10:34.urban centres and as we head into daybreak there will be some

:10:35. > :10:38.brightness around, some of the sunshine quite prolonged at times

:10:39. > :10:43.but equally there will be these clouds which could be quite dominant

:10:44. > :10:46.in other parts of the region in various times. There may be a fuel

:10:47. > :10:55.light showers, but I wouldn't take those two seriously. Temperature is

:10:56. > :10:58.not dissimilar to today, so 11 - 14 Celsius but as we head into Friday

:10:59. > :11:05.will be some rain about. Brighter on Saturday but cloud again

:11:06. > :11:10.on Sunday. Here is Tomasz. Good evening.

:11:11. > :11:18.The weather in the run-up to Christmas... Easter! I got ahead of

:11:19. > :11:25.myself there! It isn't looking especially great, nor is it looking

:11:26. > :11:29.all that sunny. It will be changeable, it's been changeable

:11:30. > :11:33.today. You can see cloud streaming out of the north-west of the

:11:34. > :11:40.country. You can see some showers getting into north western parts of

:11:41. > :11:43.the UK, but eastern areas will remain pretty clear tonight, so here

:11:44. > :11:47.we have some frost on the way first thing, ground frost, nothing more,

:11:48. > :11:52.and it will be gone by the time the sun is up. First thing in the

:11:53. > :11:58.morning, some sunshine around across one or two parts of the east here.

:11:59. > :12:02.Western areas probably a little bit more cloudy, maybe showers getting

:12:03. > :12:03.into north western areas of England,
