:00:52. > :00:54.Caroline Way, from Axbridge, needed to have much of her face rebuilt.
:00:55. > :00:56.She hopes posting her pictures online will help other women.

:01:06. > :01:11.It's not easy for Caroline Way to relive what happened in this
:01:12. > :01:17.I was on the floor and he pinned my arms to my side and sat on me
:01:18. > :01:19.so that I couldn't fight back, strangled me and then,
:01:20. > :01:25.Then said he was going to take me upstairs
:01:26. > :01:30.She did survive, but her injuries were horrific -
:01:31. > :01:32.broken jaw, cracked eye socket, blurred vision.
:01:33. > :01:34.In the days that followed she took selfies -
:01:35. > :01:39.Three years on, she's decided to post those pictures online
:01:40. > :01:42.as a warning to other women in potentially abusive
:01:43. > :01:49.I think enough time had passed for me to have dealt with a lot
:01:50. > :01:53.of the raw emotional side of things and I just wanted to make sure that
:01:54. > :02:00.if I can help anyone to not get themselves into this situation,
:02:01. > :02:07.Caroline's boyfriend at the time was given a two-year
:02:08. > :02:12.She says that in the eight years they were together this
:02:13. > :02:15.was the first time he had physically assaulted her, yet with hindsight,
:02:16. > :02:19.she should have seen the warning signs.
:02:20. > :02:29.Sarah Telford runs an organisation called Survive which helps women
:02:30. > :02:34.I asked her, a few moments, ago whether Caroline had made a very
:02:35. > :02:40.brave decision to go public with her injuries.
:02:41. > :02:43.We certainly feel that Caroline was very brave to speak out
:02:44. > :02:45.on behalf of both herself, what she experienced, but also
:02:46. > :02:47.to try and prevent other victims from experiencing domestic abuse.
:02:48. > :02:50.We really recognise how difficult that was for Caroline
:02:51. > :02:52.to photograph her injuries every day, and that very much
:02:53. > :02:54.dealt with her physical and emotional recovery,
:02:55. > :02:57.and now she has decided this is the right time to speak up
:02:58. > :03:00.about it and try and encourage other people to leave if they are in
:03:01. > :03:06.It got to that very violent stage with Caroline after several
:03:07. > :03:11.What do you think people need to watch out for?
:03:12. > :03:15.What we identify with, predominantly the woman that we work with,
:03:16. > :03:17.is that the warning signs can be incredibly subtle.
:03:18. > :03:19.What we find nationally is individuals will have experienced
:03:20. > :03:22.over 35 incidents on average before they seek help and generally it can
:03:23. > :03:26.be about three to five years before they actually are able to seek help.
:03:27. > :03:28.So those warning signs are really hidden in the early stage
:03:29. > :03:37.Is your partner using the children against you?
:03:38. > :03:39.Are they trying to blame your parenting styles?
:03:40. > :03:44.Are they using quite a coercive or controlling manner with you?
:03:45. > :03:47.Are they using emotional abuse - name-callingv, putting you down?
:03:48. > :03:50.Is it economic abuse, so where they are controlling your finances,
:03:51. > :03:55.you are not able to go out to work and earn your money?
:03:56. > :03:58.Are they minimising some of the abuse and trying to sweep it
:03:59. > :04:02.under the carpet or blame you for that abuse, as well?
:04:03. > :04:04.Maybe trying to use their position in the family home -
:04:05. > :04:08.the fact that they may be working and you are not, and they are maybe
:04:09. > :04:11.in a more powerful job than you are and trying to influence
:04:12. > :04:15.Or are they intimidating you or isolating you?
:04:16. > :04:18.Intimidating can be very much threatening behaviour or doing
:04:19. > :04:22.things that can be quite scary and quite intimidating.
:04:23. > :04:25.Isolating can be isolating you from your friends,
:04:26. > :04:29.There are different things that we can become aware
:04:30. > :04:31.of and we use something called the Freedom Programme
:04:32. > :04:34.to enable women to go on this programme and,
:04:35. > :04:36.really, week by week start to see some of the abuse
:04:37. > :04:42.Are you seeing numbers of people coming forward going up, going down?
:04:43. > :04:48.Also, are the police forces getting involved?
:04:49. > :04:51.Survive South Gloucestershire has been established now since 1974.
:04:52. > :04:54.We are one of the longest-running specialist domestic abuse
:04:55. > :04:58.What we have seen is year-on-year the numbers
:04:59. > :05:05.In one given year, when I started two years ago, we'd had 1,700 calls
:05:06. > :05:10.When you think those 1,700 calls are taken by just one staff
:05:11. > :05:13.member on a helpline, that really puts into context
:05:14. > :05:16.the specialist work that the team do and the high volume of numbers
:05:17. > :05:21.What we saw when we had The Archers story recently is a real
:05:22. > :05:23.increase of callers, particularly from an older
:05:24. > :05:25.age group, who hadn't experienced physical abuse,
:05:26. > :05:29.but had experienced emotional abuse - the coercive,
:05:30. > :05:31.controlling behaviour that was identified
:05:32. > :05:34.in that radio programme - and they were really able to come
:05:35. > :05:37.forward and now start to identify that's what they'd
:05:38. > :05:47.A councillor in Bath has been jailed for 33 months
:05:48. > :05:51.Donal Hassett, who represented Newbridge, was found guilty
:05:52. > :05:53.of acting as the property fixer , using fake paperwork to rent four
:05:54. > :05:59.homes which were turned in to cannabis factories.
:06:00. > :06:02.The family of a British rider seriously injured in a fall
:06:03. > :06:05.at the Badminton Horse Trials says she has started to
:06:06. > :06:10.Emily Gilruth fell during the cross-country course.

:06:58. > :07:00.finding solutions to the housing crisis and traffic gridlock.
:07:01. > :07:03.His fellow Conservatives were delighted on hearing
:07:04. > :07:23.But for the sole Labour member of our new combined authority,
:07:24. > :07:27.I think Tim will be reasonable and we've had a conversation
:07:28. > :07:31.already, and also Tim and Matthew know him already and have assured me
:07:32. > :07:34.Tim is a decent guy and everything that I've seen suggests
:07:35. > :07:38.that we will be able to work together very constructively.
:07:39. > :07:46.Tim Bowles was brought up in West Pennard, his father worked
:07:47. > :07:51.He's currently a manager of an events company in Yate.
:07:52. > :07:53.He's been a South Gloucestershire councillor since 2010,

:08:03. > :08:07.specific transport challenges, the specific areas that we need
:08:08. > :08:09.to be developing housing, and talking to businesses about how
:08:10. > :08:13.we make real differences in skills for everybody across the region.

:08:38. > :08:39.they are really on their third or fourth round in terms

:08:44. > :08:46.We are on our first round and the prime job of the mayor
:08:47. > :08:49.is to see what those extra powers are that we need and what the extra
:08:50. > :08:52.funding is that we need, because I'm sure there will be
:08:53. > :08:58.Simple it isn't - solve the housing crisis,
:08:59. > :09:02.sort out the transport and grab more power from Westminster.
