:00:08. > :00:10.Hello and welcome to BBC Points West, our headlines this lunchtime.

:00:11. > :00:13.Anger here as rail fares are on the up, at a time

:00:14. > :00:19.Doctors warn about the dangers of diabetes from eating too

:00:20. > :00:22.much sugar as people start their new year healthkicks.

:00:23. > :00:25.And we open the archives as Points West begins to celebrate

:00:26. > :00:40.Unions in the West have reacted angrily to the news some rail fares

:00:41. > :00:49.The government says it's needed to pay for upgrades including

:00:50. > :00:51.to the Great Western mainline, but commuters have told the BBC

:00:52. > :00:55.they'll be hit hard by the rise at a time when wages haven't been

:00:56. > :00:58.Scott Ellis is live for us at Swindon Railway Station

:00:59. > :01:15.If you were to walk in here and buy a return to London, it would cost

:01:16. > :01:20.you ?129. Do the same journey by car, a 150 mile croaked that would

:01:21. > :01:25.be only ?60, half the price. The great Western company and other

:01:26. > :01:30.train operators would say it is cheaper to buy in advance. But we

:01:31. > :01:31.have been chatting to passengers about this latest increase in rail

:01:32. > :01:34.fares. Well, I'm on an apprenticeship

:01:35. > :01:37.at the moment so I find it quite Because I am only on ?3.40,

:01:38. > :01:41.so I think it's quite difficult. Extortionately expensive, really,

:01:42. > :01:43.considering they never really invest I travel so rarely that it doesn't

:01:44. > :01:51.bother me, but I am really sorry for people who have got to have

:01:52. > :02:03.season tickets because it Chris Irwin joins us from travel

:02:04. > :02:07.watch South West which represents passengers. The government says this

:02:08. > :02:15.money goes back into the railway network. What do you say? I say it

:02:16. > :02:18.has been under invested for other long time. We have trains that are

:02:19. > :02:22.40 years old, one in four arrives late and passengers cannot get a

:02:23. > :02:26.seat. It is the most overcrowded part of the network. There are

:02:27. > :02:30.supposed to be big protests outside the station 's this morning. Hardly

:02:31. > :02:36.anyone turned out to protest and the ones we went to this mornings. So

:02:37. > :02:45.passengers can absorb the costs. They don't like it, it is part of

:02:46. > :02:53.the feel bad factor. But people here know how to celebrate Christmas and

:02:54. > :02:56.New Year, so it might be a bit early to go on the streets. The government

:02:57. > :03:00.says they are managing to keep rail prices down. The truth is that many

:03:01. > :03:07.people are still suffering from wage freezes or reduced wages, the

:03:08. > :03:22.inflation rate used by the government to put up rail

:03:23. > :03:24.Police are still questioning two men, arrested on suspicion of murder

:03:25. > :03:29.they are not the same ones used for child benefit and pensions. Don't

:03:30. > :03:50.after a man We will have more tonight.

:03:51. > :03:53.after a man was found stabbed to death on Christmas Eve.

:03:54. > :03:55.Mohammed Abduerezak's body was discovered in Siston

:03:56. > :03:58.Detectives investigating his death are searching two properties

:03:59. > :04:01.A third man arrested has been released on bail.

:04:02. > :04:04.People living in Cheddar have been sharing their concerns about

:04:05. > :04:07.It involves riders free-wheeling down steep hills,

:04:08. > :04:11.Over a million people have watched this film online,

:04:12. > :04:14.but locals have told the BBC they're worried it's not safe

:04:15. > :04:16.I have seen it, actually and quite frankly it is horrifying.

:04:17. > :04:19.It's terrifying to see these young people on their drift trikes

:04:20. > :04:21.haring down Cheddar Gorge when there are ordinary motorists

:04:22. > :04:25.The parish council at salute the deplores it and, you know,

:04:26. > :04:27.we really can't understand why these people should take such terrible

:04:28. > :04:30.risks with their own lives and also endanger the lives of ordinary

:04:31. > :04:32.law-abiding motorists coming up the other way.

:04:33. > :04:35.Drifttriking UK say it was a well organised event and they took safety

:04:36. > :04:37.precautions including putting up signs to warn

:04:38. > :04:40.With the New Year for some comes a new health kick,

:04:41. > :04:42.after all that overindulging over the Christmas period.

:04:43. > :04:45.And sugar is one of the foods doctors are warning about.

:04:46. > :04:48.Dave Harvey has been to meet one woman who's given it up altogether

:04:49. > :04:53.When he actually said those words, you've got diabetes,

:04:54. > :04:55.you have gone over the line, you've got type two diabetes,

:04:56. > :05:00.I thought, right, this is it, I've got to do something

:05:01. > :05:09.I decided to give up sugar completely.

:05:10. > :05:12.It turned out to be a lot harder than she thought.

:05:13. > :05:25.I mean, I really like my coleslaw, but that's got sugar in it.

:05:26. > :05:27.The big culprit for me initially was the fizzy drinks.

:05:28. > :05:30.This one is a lot healthier because it's a lot more natural,

:05:31. > :05:33.but it's still got just as much sugar in it as Coke.

:05:34. > :05:37.And quitting sugar was just a half of it.

:05:38. > :05:44.When I first started running, it was literally one minute

:05:45. > :05:48.And now I can run for an hour or more.

:05:49. > :05:51.I've done a half marathon, I've done a 10K.

:05:52. > :05:54.After three months of all this, Becky went back to her GP.

:05:55. > :06:01.It's really improved, so you were in the range

:06:02. > :06:04.where your blood sugar would have been in the diabetic range

:06:05. > :06:07.and actually now it's gone back completely to normal which is really

:06:08. > :06:10.Yes, Becky had reversed the diabetes completely.

:06:11. > :06:12.It's remarkable but not unique and doctors would love more people

:06:13. > :06:18.Approximately 10% of people within our city

:06:19. > :06:26.Those are the people who we really want to get through to,

:06:27. > :06:29.they can do something now to prevent themselves getting

:06:30. > :06:32.That is obviously hugely beneficial to themselves, to their families,

:06:33. > :06:34.to the health service and to the overall

:06:35. > :06:38.Becky faced a clear choice - cut sugar or live with diabetes.

:06:39. > :06:41.Becky's New Year challenge, to run a marathon.

:06:42. > :06:49.Points West is celebrating 60 years of broadcasting

:06:58. > :07:00.To kick things off, David Garmston has been looking

:07:01. > :07:03.through our archives at our first broadcast and just a few

:07:04. > :07:12.For our first news summary we have a film of events in Dorset

:07:13. > :07:20.and Hampshire and news of a strike in Cornwall.

:07:21. > :07:22.Armine Sandford presented the first television news for the West.

:07:23. > :07:25.One of the first reports was about a post office,

:07:26. > :07:27.but Miss Squires, the postmistress didn't like newfangled TV

:07:28. > :07:30.and bizarrely would only allow her bottom to be filmed.

:07:31. > :07:38.She is shy and does not want to face the cameras.

:07:39. > :07:40.The news service brought TV reporters closer than ever

:07:41. > :07:42.to the audience as we shared a joint experience.

:07:43. > :07:45.The terrible winter of 1963 saw local news in the front line.

:07:46. > :07:52.Deliveries in Bristol two or three weeks behind schedule

:07:53. > :07:55.because of the frozen state of many of the side roads.

:07:56. > :07:59.And all this year we'll be looking back at the stories that have shaped

:08:28. > :08:30.It was a very cold start to things this morning,

:08:31. > :08:34.Now, through this afternoon we have got a bit of cloud around

:08:35. > :08:36.into parts of Somerset, say, and a bit more working

:08:37. > :08:39.But in general, some good spells of sunshine,

:08:40. > :08:41.staying largely dry but feeling chilly with highs

:08:42. > :08:45.Into tonight then, more cloud appears and that could get thick

:08:46. > :08:48.enough to bring a few spots of rain, though not too much of that.

:08:49. > :08:51.Most of us stay above freezing although we could see a little bit

:08:52. > :08:53.of patchy frost here and there, although these are

:08:54. > :08:56.Breezier as we head through tonight as well.

:08:57. > :08:58.Quite cloudy then to start tomorrow morning,

:08:59. > :09:00.a spot or two of rain, but in general much

:09:01. > :09:05.The best of those coming out into the afternoon and temperatures
