0:00:00 > 0:00:16he hopes to prove the earnings forecasts wrong.

0:00:16 > 0:00:17Welcome to Points West.

0:00:17 > 0:00:18The headlines this lunchtime:

0:00:18 > 0:00:20Attacked in his own home.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22A 96-year-old man is hit with a hammer by a stranger

0:00:22 > 0:00:23at his front door.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Anger as EDF changes the way it handles radioactive waste.

0:00:26 > 0:00:35And Bath market opens but with extra security in place this year.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Good afternoon.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40A 96-year-old man has been attacked with what's thought to be

0:00:40 > 0:00:43a claw hammer by a burglar at his home in Taunton.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45He's in hospital with serious injuries.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Lee Madan is there now.

0:00:48 > 0:00:55Lee, what do we know?

0:00:55 > 0:01:01Police say they believe the attacks started as a distraction burglary.

0:01:01 > 0:01:06Between four and 5pm yesterday, the victim, 96 man answered his front

0:01:06 > 0:01:10door to somebody asking if he wanted work to be carried out on his home.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13When he refused, the man attacked him with what police say they

0:01:13 > 0:01:18suspect was a claw hammer. The victim received serious injuries to

0:01:18 > 0:01:22his head and body and he felt the floor. He managed to alert neighbour

0:01:22 > 0:01:26who got him to hospital where he is being treated with life threatening

0:01:26 > 0:01:34injuries. We are told his family by Hibs side. -- his side. The police

0:01:34 > 0:01:37have told us about the man they are looking for in connection with the

0:01:37 > 0:01:40attack.At the moment the description given is a white male,

0:01:40 > 0:01:49around 30 or 35 years of age, clean-shaven, darkish hair,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52described as athletic, stocky build. No real accident noted. No height

0:01:52 > 0:02:01was given. -- no real accident. He was wearing jeans and dark clothing.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Neighbours I have spoken to this lunchtime say they are shocked at

0:02:04 > 0:02:08their street has been at the Centre of such a brutal attack. The police

0:02:08 > 0:02:12want anyone who might have seen anything suspicious to get in touch

0:02:12 > 0:02:17with them by calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19There's been a major police incident in Swindon this morning.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Armed response officers were called out to Devizes Road in Old Town.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Five people were arrested and are currently in custody

0:02:24 > 0:02:25at Gablecross Station.

0:02:25 > 0:02:35Wiltshire Police say they are still investigating.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39The Vice Chancellor of Bath University has narrowly won

0:02:39 > 0:02:40a motion of no confidence.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Dame Glynis Breakwell faced criticism over her salary

0:02:42 > 0:02:45of £468,000.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48350 staff called her for resignation but in a meeting of the university

0:02:48 > 0:02:51senate, she beat a motion of no confidence by 19 votes

0:02:51 > 0:02:58to 16 with two abstentions.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Plans by the French energy company EDF to change the way it handles

0:03:02 > 0:03:05high level radioactive waste at Hinkley Point in Somerset

0:03:05 > 0:03:07is causing anger locally.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10The company wants to double the size of a proposed waste store

0:03:10 > 0:03:12on the Hinkley C site.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14It also wants to introduce a system of encasing

0:03:15 > 0:03:17the waste in concrete blocks.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Clinton Rogers has been assessing local reaction.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30It's the idea that it is our grandchildren's grandchildren that

0:03:30 > 0:03:35will pick up the pieces. There will be ex-amount of nuclear waste that

0:03:35 > 0:03:41will never go away.And it is the high-grade waste.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Among those who live in the shadow of Hinkley Point

0:03:43 > 0:03:46there is a mixture of fear and fury.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50My concerns are about the long-term effects of having a lump of concrete

0:03:50 > 0:03:54on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty that is

0:03:54 > 0:03:58going to be there essentially for ever because they haven't sorted out

0:03:58 > 0:04:01what their going to do with the nasty substance inside it.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05EDF has always said that all high level radioactive waste

0:04:05 > 0:04:07produced by Hinkley C, including spent fuel rods,

0:04:07 > 0:04:11will need to be stored on site.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Right now there is nowhere else for it to go.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16But now it's applied to double

0:04:16 > 0:04:18the size of its waste store and it also wants to change

0:04:18 > 0:04:22the way it handles high level radioactive waste,

0:04:22 > 0:04:28changing to a system where it is encased in concrete.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32In a statement, EDF has told us that it is a safe and robust system

0:04:32 > 0:04:33used across Europe and the USA.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39But opponents say switching from a method where the high level

0:04:39 > 0:04:45waste is held in water to what's known as a dry system has dangers.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49The problem with a dry storages that it relies on the integrity of a

0:04:49 > 0:04:53concrete block, but a concrete block containing waste material will last

0:04:53 > 0:04:55for ever.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58The leader of West Somerset Council says he's more concerned

0:04:58 > 0:05:00by the plans to increase the size of the storage building.

0:05:00 > 0:05:05It will be the last building left on site. When the decommissioning takes

0:05:05 > 0:05:09place, which is going to be a long time from now, the reactors will go,

0:05:09 > 0:05:13but that building will be left there when the rest of the site has been

0:05:13 > 0:05:14flattened.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15when the rest of the site has been flattened.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17EDF says there is no plan to increase the amount of waste

0:05:18 > 0:05:20stored on the site merely to change the system.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22It's the Environment Department which will make the final decision,

0:05:22 > 0:05:24but that won't be for some while yet.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31The University of Bristol has revealed plans for its new £300

0:05:31 > 0:05:32million campus.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35It says they wants to transform the seven-acre site by Temple Meads

0:05:35 > 0:05:37to create education and research facilities and accommodation

0:05:37 > 0:05:42for 1,500 students.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44It will also be a car-free zone with the aim

0:05:44 > 0:05:46of being carbon neutral by 2030.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Extra security measures are in place at this year's

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Bath Christmas Market.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Large concrete bollards have been positioned around the main

0:05:54 > 0:05:58pedestrian areas for public safety.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00It's in line with other cities who've stepped

0:06:01 > 0:06:02up their security as the UK

0:06:02 > 0:06:03terror threat remains at severe.

0:06:03 > 0:06:10Imogen Sellers reports.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15From humble beginnings 17 years ago, the Bath Christmas market has become

0:06:15 > 0:06:20one of the UK's favourites. But with that success comes increasing

0:06:20 > 0:06:23security risks. Organisers have two strike the balance between people

0:06:23 > 0:06:29having fun and people staying safe. This year lots of extra security has

0:06:29 > 0:06:34been brought in, including Lance all around the city centre. You will

0:06:34 > 0:06:37notice some differences as we have put restricted access for vehicles

0:06:37 > 0:06:43and we are working with the council and Southgate to make sure that the

0:06:43 > 0:06:47city is as face -- safe as we can possibly make it. We are not under

0:06:47 > 0:06:50any particular threat and we don't think there is any additional

0:06:50 > 0:06:54measure to take, but we want people to be reassured that it is the

0:06:54 > 0:07:00primary importance, visitor safety. At the end of the day, come and

0:07:00 > 0:07:04enjoy it, it's a wonderful city. This year the market has extended to

0:07:04 > 0:07:10three more streets in the hope that it won't feel quite so busy, because

0:07:10 > 0:07:13believe me, it gets absolutely rammed. Thousands of tourists come

0:07:13 > 0:07:17here every day, but some shopkeepers worry that their trade is taken away

0:07:17 > 0:07:22by the stalls at the Christmas market. Dave Dixon is from the Bath

0:07:22 > 0:07:26chamber of commerce. How do you respond to those concerns? We are

0:07:26 > 0:07:32fortunate to have thousands of extra people in the city centre. A great

0:07:32 > 0:07:35response, someone walking by me said, let's go up to the White

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Company, here are the Christmas market, but exploring what else the

0:07:38 > 0:07:46city has two offer.-- here for. Very more coming from a festive

0:07:46 > 0:07:52feeling Bath at half past six to nine.

0:07:52 > 0:07:58A little boy from Somerset is having the birthday of a lifetime.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00When Officers discovered 5 year old Jayden was very poorly

0:08:00 > 0:08:03and waiting for a heart transplant, they decided to pull out

0:08:03 > 0:08:04all the stops on his special day.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08They picked him up from his home in Midsomer Norton, and took him off

0:08:08 > 0:08:10to practice being a policeman for the day!

0:08:10 > 0:08:19You can see just how it all went on Points West tonight.

0:08:19 > 0:08:20Isn't that glorious?

0:08:20 > 0:08:22Now the weather with Alex Osborne.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Now the weather with Alex Osborne.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Turning colder through the rest of the day but most of us will see

0:08:28 > 0:08:31plenty of dry and bright weather, and that is going to continue into

0:08:31 > 0:08:35the afternoon. Staying dry for most of us with good spells on sunshine.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40A risk of an isolated shower in the Bristol Channel but most of the

0:08:40 > 0:08:44stage right, feeling chilly and breezy with highs of 11 Celsius.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Through the evening and overnight, it will be dry for a time, the cloud

0:08:48 > 0:08:52will thicken and bring outbreaks of rain, fairly rapidly clearing into

0:08:52 > 0:08:57the early hours with a chilly night to come with temperatures dropping

0:08:57 > 0:09:00into low single figures. Friday is mostly dry and bright, good spells

0:09:00 > 0:09:05of sunshine, lighter winds but it will feel noticeably colder with the

0:09:05 > 0:09:09wind in the north-westerly direction with temperatures only at eight

0:09:09 > 0:09:10Celsius. Take care.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16It's going to be getting colder and Ian will have a good look at the

0:09:16 > 0:09:20forecast this evening. A quick update on travel.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22And if you're taking the train today, there are replacement buses

0:09:22 > 0:09:24running between Swindon and Didcot Parkway

0:09:24 > 0:09:26in both directions.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29That's it from us.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Join us again at 6:30 p:m.. Goodbye.
