0:00:10 > 0:00:12Good evening.

0:00:12 > 0:00:17A hospital in the West is t`king part in pioneering research aimed

0:00:17 > 0:00:20at improving the survival r`te of unborn baby twins.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24Doctors at St Michael's Hospital in Bristol are studying

0:00:24 > 0:00:26babies who are diagnosed with the potentially

0:00:26 > 0:00:28life threatening "twin to twin transition syndrome".

0:00:28 > 0:00:30The project could help save hundreds of lives.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35Julia Causton reports.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38These sisters are typical three-year olds.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41But identical twins Eve and Amy had a complicated start to life.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43We could tell that there was something different.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46At the scan, there was a tension in the air.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48And when they realised, when the consultants realisdd.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Jo's babies had twin to twin transfusion syndrome.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Potentially fatal, it affects twins who share a placenta.

0:00:55 > 0:01:00They don't share blood equally.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02One baby gets too much, the other doesn't get enough.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Jo needed an operation on her tiny unborn babies.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09Without it, they had a less than 10% chance of survival.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11I could feel movement, so I was hopeful that at le`st one

0:01:11 > 0:01:13of them would survive the strgery.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16I went in for the scan and within seconds,

0:01:16 > 0:01:18he found two heartbeats.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20So, it was...

0:01:20 > 0:01:22I'm sorry!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25I was really happy.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Eve and Amy eventually arrived nine weeks early.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Tiny but determined, now happy and healthy.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Their story is helping doctors who are sharing

0:01:34 > 0:01:38information about the condition in a countrywide registry.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41Saint Michael's, here in Brhstol, is one of nine hospitals

0:01:41 > 0:01:46to join the registry.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Doctors are hoping it will help them to build a picture of twin to twin

0:01:49 > 0:01:52transfusion syndrome, allowing them to compare cases

0:01:52 > 0:01:54and find out which treatments offer the best outcomes.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56We're very proud that our figures here are as good

0:01:56 > 0:01:58as anywhere else in the world.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00But it could still be better because not every

0:02:00 > 0:02:02single baby will survive.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06And some babies that do survive will be injured as a result of this.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10So anything we can do to improve survival has got to be a good thing.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12They are now hoping their experience can help others share

0:02:12 > 0:02:19their happy ending.
