0:00:11 > 0:00:12Good evening.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15A mother from Cheltenham is campaigning for a change in the laws

0:00:15 > 0:00:16surrounding organ donation,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19after her daughter had a liver transplant.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Kerry Smith says it made her realise there was a shortage of donors.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26She wants England to adopt the Welsh system,

0:00:26 > 0:00:30where it's assumed everyone has given consent, unless they opt out.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Scott Ellis reports.

0:00:33 > 0:00:3615-year-old Megan Carson from Cheltenham fell ill last year

0:00:36 > 0:00:39with autoimmune hepatitis.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43Luckily, she had a liver transplant within two months.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46But that anxious wait made her family aware

0:00:46 > 0:00:49of a shortage of donors, one they think would be improved

0:00:49 > 0:00:55if England adopted the Welsh system of presumed consent.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Well, one person can donate several organs,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00and I think that presumed consent can help so much more

0:01:00 > 0:01:04than just opting in, because not enough people opt in.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Presumed consent would enable everybody

0:01:06 > 0:01:09to make their wishes known.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11I still believe they should have the choice and they can

0:01:11 > 0:01:15opt out if they need to, but it would ease the decisions

0:01:15 > 0:01:19that their upset relatives need to make at that time.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Kerry Smith is canvassing politicians for a change

0:01:22 > 0:01:24to the Welsh system.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28In its first year, it has led to an increase in transplants.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31People we spoke to here are in favour.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34If we did, like, adapt to it, then it should be more advertised

0:01:34 > 0:01:37on the fact that you can opt out if you want to.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41I wouldn't mind my organs going, but I just don't have a donor card.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43There are those, though, who worry about presumed consent -

0:01:43 > 0:01:47the thought the state in some way owns your organs, and might death be

0:01:47 > 0:01:50hastened if an organ was needed by someone else?

0:01:50 > 0:01:54But a leading medical philosopher in the West says it is worth

0:01:54 > 0:01:59remembering that you are more likely to need an organ than be a donor.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03We emphasise the donor's perspective, another equally

0:02:03 > 0:02:06important question is, would you want to have an organ

0:02:06 > 0:02:09available to you if you were in a situation where you needed one,

0:02:09 > 0:02:11and the alternative was death?

0:02:11 > 0:02:14The Department of Health in England says it has no plans

0:02:14 > 0:02:17to introduce an opt-out system, but it is watching developments

0:02:17 > 0:02:20in Wales, where the UK as a whole has one of the lowest rates

0:02:20 > 0:02:23of consent in Europe.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28Scott Ellis, BBC Points West.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30A device believed to be from World War II has been found

0:02:30 > 0:02:32on a beach near Weston-Super-Mare.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35It is thought it may have been a spigot mortar.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37It was blown up in a controlled explosion this afternoon

0:02:37 > 0:02:40by the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Because of its size, a 1,500 metre exclusion zone was put

0:02:43 > 0:02:48in place and residents were advised to stay indoors.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51The final beams were put into place today for

0:02:51 > 0:02:53a new bridge for MetroBus, going over the Portbury

0:02:53 > 0:02:57freight line near Winterstoke Road in South Bristol.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Completion of the bridge has been called a milestone -

0:02:59 > 0:03:02it'll mean the Metrobus can avoid congestion on the Winterstoke Road

0:03:02 > 0:03:04and Cumberland Basin.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07The scheme, which has been criticised for the intensive

0:03:07 > 0:03:09roadworks needed and the amount it has cost,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13is due to open in the autumn.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16In football, Bristol City's woes continue this weekend.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19They are out of the FA Cup, beaten 2-0 at Premier League Burnley.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Here's a round-up.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Once Burnley went ahead in the final seconds of the first half,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28City never really looked like getting back into the game.

0:03:28 > 0:03:33Then Steven Defour sealed it on 68 minutes from the edge of the box.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Over in League One, a West Country derby.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Billy Bodin's 29th-minute effort earned Bristol Rovers

0:03:37 > 0:03:39victory over Swindon.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42The shot went in via both posts.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Rovers now in touch with the play-off places,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Swindon are skirting near the drop zone.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Cheltenham held on for a goalless draw at Crewe, thanks in part

0:03:49 > 0:03:53to the goalkeeping heroics of Scott Brown.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57Yeovil were beaten 3-0 at home by promotion favourites Doncaster.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Two from John Marquis sealing Yeovil's fate.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03And Forest Green closed the gap at the top of the National League,

0:04:03 > 0:04:06as Emmanuel Monthe's late winner helped see off Barrow

0:04:06 > 0:04:09at Holker Street.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13Staff caring for an injured swan that was shot with a crossbow

0:04:13 > 0:04:16have told us they're pleased with his progress this weekend.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18George was found on Cheltenham's Pittville Lake

0:04:18 > 0:04:21with a bolt in his neck last Monday.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24But these recent pictures show, he's already standing on his own.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Vale Wildlife Hospital is watching his recovery closely

0:04:27 > 0:04:32before attempting to operate on his eye.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34And around 500 amateur singers and musicians pulled off

0:04:35 > 0:04:37an amazing feat today.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39The challenge was to learn a concert full of music

0:04:39 > 0:04:42sent to them in advance, then this morning, they all met

0:04:42 > 0:04:45for the first time to rehearse, and there was a full performance

0:05:08 > 0:05:14Time for a weather check now, here's Emily Wood.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Hello. We have seen some very wet weather today.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Remaining unsettled for the week ahead as well.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Still some rain for a time this evening.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25It does ease as we go through tonight, but leaves

0:05:25 > 0:05:28behind a lot of cloud, some drizzle and also some mist

0:05:28 > 0:05:30and fog to watch out for.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34Not too cold tonight, though, lows of between six and nine Celsius.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37So, a grey and murky start to Monday morning with mist and fog,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40and further outbreaks of rain spreading through the West

0:05:40 > 0:05:42tomorrow afternoon.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45It does remain mild, though, we could see highs of up to
