:00:00. > :00:00.A new service has been launched in Somerset to reduce hospital

:00:00. > :00:07.admissions and relieve the pressure on accident and

:00:08. > :00:13.The scheme involves GPs responding to some 999 calls.

:00:14. > :00:16.It's one of the first places in the country to try out the idea,

:00:17. > :00:20.and it's led to 80% of patients being treated at home.

:00:31. > :00:34.is online and we're available for any jobs, over.

:00:35. > :00:37.This is one of two first responders running at the weekend

:00:38. > :00:42.But they're only sent out to selected emergencies.

:00:43. > :00:44.Often people with more complicated problems,

:00:45. > :00:48.such as mental health problems, end of life problems,

:00:49. > :00:52.or complicated medical conditions which involved a lot of different

:00:53. > :00:57.It's not long before such a call comes through.

:00:58. > :01:04.An elderly woman, in a state of confusion.

:01:05. > :01:12.As a GP, he can do more than a paramedic -

:01:13. > :01:15.prescribe drugs and look up medical records.

:01:16. > :01:18.It means he can treat this patient at home.

:01:19. > :01:20.It's very likely this lady would have been taken

:01:21. > :01:23.to an emergency department for assessment by the emergency

:01:24. > :01:27.doctors there, which would have been distressing for her potentially

:01:28. > :01:31.and might have made her confusion worse.

:01:32. > :01:35.Then she possibly would have been admitted to hospital.

:01:36. > :01:38.And, in two months, 80% of those seen by the service

:01:39. > :01:44.It's improved patient care, good for the use of the resources

:01:45. > :01:51.in the local NHS, potentially frees up hospital beds for other patients.

:01:52. > :01:55.It's being funded for another year and extended to weekdays.

:01:56. > :02:00.In this case, social care took over, leaving GP 999 free

:02:01. > :02:09.Police are investigating the death of a woman

:02:10. > :02:15.Police believe she may have been hit by a vehicle.

:02:16. > :02:18.They're trying to trace it and want to hear from witnesses.

:02:19. > :02:22.Officers were called to the area an hour previously after reports

:02:23. > :02:26.of a woman walking in the road, but they couldn't find her.

:02:27. > :02:29.A vigil was held in Stroud last night for an army gunner
