:00:13. > :00:16.the way it cares for older people. The health watchdog, the Care

:00:16. > :00:19.Quality Commission, found problems at the Darent Valley Hospital with

:00:19. > :00:21.the way patients' dignity was maintained and the food they were

:00:22. > :00:25.served. Our social affairs correspondent Yvette Austin joins

:00:25. > :00:32.us now from the hospital. Yvette, what has brought these issues to

:00:32. > :00:36.light? All of this comes from a single inspection on 28th March.

:00:36. > :00:43.Two wards were looked at for elderly people. Moderate concerns

:00:43. > :00:47.were identified. It implied an impact on health and well-being.

:00:47. > :00:54.Some empty beds now, but in March the wards were full to overflowing

:00:54. > :00:59.due to the -- due to the winter. A hospital put extra beds in and were

:00:59. > :01:05.criticised not just for that but first patients' nutrition as well.

:01:05. > :01:10.The report said the extra beds compromised people's privacy and

:01:10. > :01:17.safety. The beds had no proper curtains or bowls and no emergency

:01:17. > :01:21.knocks up to -- oxygen supply. The hospital has now taken action.

:01:21. > :01:25.This is one of the wards where the emergency beds would have been. We

:01:25. > :01:32.have now taken them down and they have been removed to stand by wards

:01:32. > :01:36.so if anything happens we can transfer patients to there.

:01:36. > :01:40.We have had a lot of effort to make sure that nurses are responsible

:01:40. > :01:44.for making sure that elderly patients in particular to get

:01:44. > :01:52.assistance with feeding when they needed.

:01:52. > :01:58.And the patient's seemed -- the patients seemed reassured.

:01:58. > :02:04.I have no complaints at all. staff of very caring.

:02:04. > :02:08.The hospital has 28 days to report its improvement to the watchdog.

:02:08. > :02:12.The commission was so concerned about his visit in March that it

:02:12. > :02:18.decided to come back in mid- June. It saw improvements and saw that

:02:18. > :02:21.they were working but the full report has yet to be published.

:02:21. > :02:24.A witness has told Lewes Crown Court that the mother accused of
