:11:57. > :12:01.children swallowed a razor blade at a mental health unit, because she
:12:01. > :12:03.couldn't see a future for herself. Lewes Crown Court has heard that
:12:03. > :12:10.Fiona Donnison was suffering from depression when two-year-old Harry
:12:10. > :12:12.and three-year-old Elise were killed. Jon Hunt reports.
:12:12. > :12:15.Fiona Donnison is accused of suffocating her children at her
:12:15. > :12:19.rented home at Lightwater in Surrey, before driving their bodies to
:12:19. > :12:22.Heathfield in the boot of her car. Since being arrested and charged
:12:22. > :12:26.with their murder, the 45-year-old has been held at a medium secure
:12:26. > :12:31.mental heath unit. But her consultant psychiatrist, Dr Mari
:12:32. > :12:35.Harty revealed today that while there, she tried to harm herself.
:12:35. > :12:37.The court was told that on 23rd January this year, just days before
:12:37. > :12:42.the first anniversary of the killings, Fiona Donnison swallowed
:12:42. > :12:45.a blade from a pencil sharpener. She told her consultant that even
:12:45. > :12:50.though she thought it would harm her, she didn't actually have the
:12:50. > :12:56.courage to commit suicide, but she thought it would be better for
:12:56. > :12:59.everybody if she wasn't here anymore. Dr Harty told the court
:12:59. > :13:03.that at the time the children were killed, Fiona Donnison was mentally
:13:03. > :13:10.unwell. Defending Simon Russell Flint QC asked Dr Harty what that
:13:10. > :13:13.mental illness amounted to. At the time of the deaths of Harry and
:13:13. > :13:16.Elise, Dr Harty said, "Ms Donnison was suffering from an abnormality
:13:16. > :13:19.of mind, and that abnormality of mind was depression of moderate
:13:19. > :13:24.gravity. But under cross examination, Prosecutor Christine
:13:24. > :13:27.Laing QC asked Dr Harty. "Did you ever ask her why she killed the
:13:27. > :13:30.children?" "No", Dr Harty replied. "Did you not think it might be
:13:30. > :13:34.relevant?" She was asked. "She was very guarded," Dr Harty said, "and
:13:34. > :13:42.I was aware she had been advised not to talk about it". Fiona
:13:42. > :13:44.Donnison denies murdering Harry and Elise, the trial continues.
:13:44. > :13:48.Serious allegations about the neglect of adults with learning
:13:48. > :13:52.difficulties at a Kent care home have been passed onto the police.
