:00:04. > :00:07.Welcome to South East Today. My name's John Young. Tonight's top

:00:07. > :00:09.stories: "Change the law on extradition" -

:00:09. > :00:19.the firefighter convicted of violence in Portugal is released.

:00:19. > :00:20.

:00:20. > :00:25.He says he never stood a chance. was put in a dungeon with no

:00:25. > :00:28.heating or lighting. They served food under the door.

:00:28. > :00:31.Another emergency on the Thames a rescue is called off tonight after

:00:31. > :00:33.a tug boat from Gravesend sinks. One man is still missing.

:00:33. > :00:36.Also in tonight's programme: It's Festival Friday and we'll be

:00:36. > :00:40.live with a special programme from Eastbourne Airbourne, the world's

:00:40. > :00:43.biggest free seafront airshow. We'll bring you some breathtaking

:00:43. > :00:47.aerobatic displays, as well as all the entertainment that's on offer

:00:47. > :00:57.down here at ground level. And see how I got on barrel-rolling

:00:57. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:11.over Sussex in a World War II US Good evening. Extradition laws need

:01:11. > :01:15.to be changed. That's the claim today by a man from Kent who was

:01:15. > :01:17.jailed in Portugal for his part in a mass fight at Euro 2004. Garry

:01:17. > :01:22.Mann, a former firefighter who's from Faversham, has just been

:01:22. > :01:25.released after serving half of a two year sentence for rioting. He's

:01:25. > :01:34.always denied the charges and says he simply didn't receive a fair

:01:34. > :01:38.trial. Yvette Austin spoke to him this morning.

:01:38. > :01:43.Portugal 2004 and Garry Mann is led away by police. Football fans were

:01:43. > :01:48.in town and trouble had broken out on the streets. The police said

:01:48. > :01:52.Garry Mann was involved. He said he had been drinking in a bar all

:01:52. > :02:00.along. Legal battles ensued and he found himself in a Portuguese

:02:00. > :02:08.prison. The first few weeks were extremely tough. I was put in a

:02:09. > :02:13.dungeon with no heating or lighting. There was excrement on the wall.

:02:13. > :02:19.He's released brings to an end a seven-year saga. In June 2004 he

:02:19. > :02:25.was arrested, tried and convicted in for take out was. In May last

:02:25. > :02:35.year he was extradited to Portugal and this may he returned to a UK

:02:35. > :02:38.

:02:38. > :02:48.prison to complete his sentence. Gary man - that Garry Mann says

:02:48. > :03:01.

:03:02. > :03:09.that the extradition warrant was unnecessary. The system is used a

:03:09. > :03:19.cross Europe and it is meant to give members of the European Union

:03:19. > :03:19.

:03:19. > :03:24.a fair trial a broad. -- abroad. was under a fast-track system that

:03:24. > :03:30.does not apply in Portugal. Normally they would give me time to

:03:30. > :03:35.get evidence, talk to my lawyer and have a decent translation. Normally

:03:35. > :03:40.they would have given me time to get CCTV evidence. I did not have

:03:40. > :03:45.any of that. Garry Mann is looking forward to finding a new job and

:03:45. > :03:48.spending time with his family. Kent Police say they can cope with

:03:48. > :03:51.hundreds of job cuts, despite recent demands on the service. The

:03:51. > :03:54.force is having to cut 1,500 jobs to meet a 20% budget reduction.

:03:54. > :03:57.That works out at roughly the same number of extra staff that were

:03:57. > :04:00.needed to cover this week's riots. The union that represents many

:04:00. > :04:08.officers, the Police Federation, says crime will definitely rise if

:04:08. > :04:11.the cuts go ahead, but managers deny that. Review we have been the

:04:11. > :04:21.force at the moment is we are redesigning at one model. We are

:04:21. > :04:23.

:04:23. > :04:26.doing it to reassure we -- ensure week reinforce the front line.

:04:26. > :04:29.A search and rescue operation has been called off this evening after

:04:29. > :04:32.a tug boat from Kent sank in the Thames at Greenwich this morning.

:04:32. > :04:35.Chieftain, which is thought to be owned by Palmer Marine Services

:04:35. > :04:38.based in Gravesend, was carrying three crew members one of them is

:04:38. > :04:45.still missing. The incident comes just a week after a man from

:04:45. > :04:50.Swanley died in a similar incident on the river.

:04:50. > :04:53.At the bottom of the screen you can see two men scrambling out of the

:04:53. > :04:59.water to safety. What the picture does not show is that moments

:04:59. > :05:04.earlier, the tug boat they were on sank in the Thames. It happened at

:05:04. > :05:13.around 11 o'clock this morning and a resident in these flat saw it.

:05:13. > :05:22.was in my lounge and I saw eight large barge go by without a tug on

:05:22. > :05:28.a chain. Suddenly, it turned over. Two guys jump out of it and my

:05:28. > :05:33.partner took some photographs. seems that a large barge was being

:05:33. > :05:37.bought by a couple of tug boats. One of them got caught in the

:05:37. > :05:44.middle of the river. It then it flipped over and sank within

:05:44. > :05:53.seconds. It was quite a big barge. It was a massive crane, so you can

:05:53. > :05:57.imagine the weight and size of the thing. The tug boats was a

:05:57. > :06:04.registered in Gravesend and it is believed that is where it was

:06:04. > :06:08.heading. Two men were rescued, but one man is still missing. A major

:06:08. > :06:13.search and rescue operation was launched earlier, but it has now

:06:13. > :06:20.been called off. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have now launched

:06:20. > :06:26.an investigation into what happened. In a moment - it ready for the off

:06:26. > :06:32.and an important date in Kenya. A Sussex charity hopes to meet Barack

:06:32. > :06:36.Obama's grandmother to help tackle famine.

:06:36. > :06:40.But first, it is that time on a Friday evening in August when we

:06:40. > :06:49.leave the studio and head out on the latest of our Festival Friday

:06:49. > :06:55.series. This evening Polly and Rob are at Eastbourne Airbourne. What

:06:55. > :07:04.is the atmosphere like? It is great. You join us at an

:07:04. > :07:08.opportune moment when an American fighter plane is there a HET.

:07:08. > :07:14.Thousands and thousands of people have turned out to see the show, to

:07:14. > :07:17.see us and more importantly, to see the aeroplanes. We've seen

:07:17. > :07:21.aerobatics and we will be seen the Red Arrows.

:07:21. > :07:27.Them as a lot going on on the ground as well. In the main arena

:07:27. > :07:30.there is hand-to-hand combat among us the Marines. In a moment we will

:07:30. > :07:35.speed one of the pilots taking part in the aerobatic displays and we

:07:35. > :07:40.will find out what this event does of tourism in Eastbourne. Firstly,

:07:40. > :07:46.Ian Palmer has been soaking up the atmosphere of the day.

:07:46. > :07:50.Wing walking over Sussex. It must be Eastbourne Airbourne. I never

:07:50. > :07:54.get nervous before a wing walk. I have wanted to it since I was six

:07:54. > :08:03.years old. I have been doing it for five years and every time it is a

:08:03. > :08:08.magical experience. The event has come a long way since it first

:08:08. > :08:18.started in 1993. So much so, Nigel and Carol Smith built their annual

:08:18. > :08:19.

:08:19. > :08:25.holiday around it. The airshow at is an extra thing to do. We really

:08:25. > :08:30.enjoy it. For not liking aeroplanes I have become addicted. This bomb-

:08:30. > :08:34.disposal robot is part of an army boat show. Everyone knows an army

:08:34. > :08:40.marches on its stomach and this is where the Cook's try to fill it.

:08:40. > :08:45.The we are chefs by trade, so we look at what the troops are doing.

:08:45. > :08:48.If they have got a heavy schedule, we will know them up with

:08:48. > :08:53.carbohydrates. Jumping out of aeroplanes and helicopters is not

:08:53. > :08:58.normal behaviour, but today there are plenty willing to do it. One of

:08:58. > :09:02.the best ways to enjoy this guy is to get out of their aircraft.

:09:02. > :09:11.Everyone on the display team has at least 200 jams, which is the

:09:11. > :09:16.minimum you need. A special moment was reserved for Britain's plane,

:09:16. > :09:25.the Spitfire. They are fantastic. Just wonderful to see all these

:09:25. > :09:30.people enjoying our history and having fun and feeling very relaxed.

:09:30. > :09:35.It was and relaxing 70 years ago when the skies over the South East

:09:35. > :09:40.were four of World War II fighter planes. Today's Battle of Britain

:09:40. > :09:49.Memorial Flight bypass is a salute to hour aviation history. A History

:09:49. > :09:53.kept alive by this unique event. That Battle of Britain Memorial

:09:53. > :10:03.Flight is one of the most popular events here and we have got one of

:10:03. > :10:05.

:10:05. > :10:12.the men involved. Hello. You are responsible for checking of the

:10:12. > :10:22.equipment, aren't you? Yes. I look after parachutes, life preservers,

:10:22. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:34.oxygen masks. All the kit the aircrew were. -- where. There is

:10:34. > :10:42.quite a responsibility. Yes. If the parachute doesn't work, we will fix

:10:42. > :10:51.it for free! There is a lot of sentiment and emotion involved in

:10:51. > :10:58.watching the Memorial Flight. crowd love it. There are a lot of

:10:58. > :11:08.veterans still around today. The long Custer represents that 55,000

:11:08. > :11:09.

:11:09. > :11:13.people who died. -- B Lancaster. This is a big deal for Eastbourne

:11:13. > :11:23.and Rob is finding out what it means for tourism in the area.

:11:23. > :11:25.

:11:25. > :11:30.There is a lot for people to get involved in and take a look out.

:11:30. > :11:38.These bomb-disposal robots are similar to those been used in

:11:38. > :11:43.Afghanistan. They read thousands of people here and here, of course, is

:11:43. > :11:47.a Hawk jet. Neil Stanley is from Eastbourne Council. You are pleased

:11:47. > :11:52.to see a lot of people here today, aren't you? It is fantastic.

:11:52. > :11:58.Everyone is having fun. This is hugely important for the town

:11:59. > :12:08.because this event is were up 10 % of the town's income. You yes. It

:12:09. > :12:11.

:12:11. > :12:15.is worth 27 million. It puts up son -- us on the map. You did

:12:15. > :12:21.charge for the event a few years ago and the number has dropped off.

:12:21. > :12:27.Can use continue providing the event for free. It is worth the

:12:27. > :12:34.investment. It is busy today. Something like 35,000 ice-creams

:12:34. > :12:41.are sold over the weekend. Back is right. The seafront is heaving and

:12:41. > :12:45.it has been a fantastic day out. Thank you. That a fighter jet is

:12:45. > :12:53.going to continue, so let's go back to the studio.

:12:53. > :13:03.We will go back to East or later. A charity worker from Sussex is

:13:03. > :13:07.hoping to meet President Obama in Kenya. Rick Sharp have sent a

:13:07. > :13:17.makeshift medical centre at to Kenya. The President's grandmother

:13:17. > :13:24.

:13:24. > :13:34.Sarah lives in Kenya and he will be Once everything is unloaded in

:13:34. > :13:35.

:13:35. > :13:42.Kenya, the container itself will become a medical clinic. At 35,000

:13:42. > :13:49.for a built of brick clinic, we couldn't afford that. Consequently,

:13:49. > :13:53.we hope really going to do 10 of these in five years. It is ideal.

:13:53. > :13:58.The charity has also started a five-year malaria awareness

:13:58. > :14:02.campaign with another charity run by President Obama's grandmother.

:14:02. > :14:08.That will lead to a meeting with President Obama during an official

:14:08. > :14:15.visit to Kenya next month. meeting with President Obama speaks

:14:15. > :14:22.for itself. It raises the profile no end. They announced but Sarah

:14:22. > :14:28.Obama, she is actually putting up money and they said they have

:14:28. > :14:38.already got us on the list and they hope we're going to help. And so

:14:38. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :14:46.the container head -- headed off on its trip to Kenya.

:14:46. > :14:54.And thanks to a -- to rig Sharpe himself for getting in touch. If

:14:54. > :15:04.you have got anything to say, you can give us a call or e-mail us, or

:15:04. > :15:07.text us. A 21-year-old man from Dartford who

:15:07. > :15:10.fell overboard in a boating accident off Greece says he's lucky

:15:10. > :15:13.to be alive. Adam Rose fell overboard and was struck by the

:15:13. > :15:16.boat's propeller while on holiday in Zante. He was rescued when his

:15:16. > :15:18.friends dived in to save him from drowning. He's been treated at

:15:18. > :15:21.Darent Valley Hospital. Final preparations are underway for

:15:21. > :15:25.tomorrow's annual Gay Pride Festival in Brighton, with tens of

:15:25. > :15:27.thousands of people expected in the city. For the first time,

:15:27. > :15:31.organisers are charging people to attend the final event at Preston

:15:31. > :15:36.Park. The police say they'll be clamping down if large illegal

:15:36. > :15:40.public parties spring up elsewhere. It's been confirmed that a new

:15:40. > :15:42.world record was set in April for the most hot air balloons to cross

:15:42. > :15:50.the English Channel. 49 balloons crossed from Lydden Hill Race

:15:50. > :15:53.Circuit in Dover to Calais Airport. Football now, and after an almost

:15:53. > :15:56.perfect start to the new football season last weekend, the South

:15:56. > :16:06.East's top teams will be hoping for something similar tomorrow. But, as

:16:06. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:11.Neil Bell reports, three of them face tricky away games. After the

:16:11. > :16:21.euphoria of their first home win last weekend, Brighton will be

:16:21. > :16:23.

:16:23. > :16:30.hoping for an equally impressive result at Portsmouth. I need to be

:16:30. > :16:40.calm and realistic. We need to slowly become a proper championship

:16:40. > :16:42.

:16:42. > :16:48.team. If people think it is going to happen this year, we already won

:16:48. > :16:51.the league last year, we need to become. Charlton should be full of

:16:51. > :17:01.confidence for their trip to Notts cans -- Notts County following

:17:01. > :17:02.

:17:02. > :17:12.their victory over Bournemouth. This was a sublime strike.

:17:12. > :17:13.

:17:13. > :17:16.Gillingham travelled to crew. It is a big day for Crawley, who take on

:17:16. > :17:20.Macclesfield in their first ever home league game. They will be

:17:20. > :17:28.hoping to celebrate with a victory after an impressive draw at Port

:17:28. > :17:33.Vale last Saturday. That is it from me and the rest of

:17:33. > :17:42.the team in the studio but there is now plenty more to come from a rope

:17:42. > :17:52.and pulley at Eastbourne. -- From Rob and Polly. We had just come

:17:52. > :17:59.down to the sea fund. This is a festival on a massive scale. There

:17:59. > :18:03.are 100,000 visitors over format days. They have consumed 35,000

:18:03. > :18:11.ice-creams and they will sway the 1000 gallons of tea and coffee.

:18:11. > :18:19.That is quite a lot! We were going to be seeing the Blades buying but

:18:19. > :18:25.the crowds are a bit low for that. -- flying. We wanted to get an idea

:18:25. > :18:35.of what it is like to actually be in a plane and go up there. I was

:18:35. > :18:35.

:18:35. > :18:43.fortunate enough to actually get If you want to loop the loop, there

:18:43. > :18:49.is really only one way to find out if you have got the right stuff.

:18:49. > :18:58.This is a big aeroplane, very powerful. Second -- Second World

:18:58. > :19:07.War training aircraft. With its 600 horsepower engine, it is a very

:19:08. > :19:15.stable, heavy lump. Even so, once she is in the air, she becomes

:19:15. > :19:25.graceful. That was beautiful! Unfortunately, there was a very low

:19:25. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:39.cloud the day we went up, but we did manage to punch through. Then

:19:39. > :19:39.

:19:39. > :19:46.Richard was able to show me what she can really do. That is awesome!

:19:46. > :19:56.What a feeling. Fantastic. And then, after a barrel rolling, we loop the

:19:56. > :20:00.

:20:00. > :20:04.loop, going completely upside down over Sussex. The Texan was built by

:20:04. > :20:14.the Americans in the 40s for fighter pilot training and the RAF

:20:14. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:19.build their own version, calling at the Harvard. These are the kind of

:20:19. > :20:27.aircraft back people who went on to buy spit buyers would have trained

:20:27. > :20:35.in. It really is a privilege. -- Spitfires. Then all too quickly, we

:20:35. > :20:45.were back on the ground. There is a lot of power there, but it is built

:20:45. > :20:54.

:20:54. > :21:01.that fires to last. -- of that size to last. When we see the guys at

:21:01. > :21:09.Airbourne, how would that compared to what we just did? I do them

:21:09. > :21:15.slightly lower to the ground and tie them closer together, but that

:21:15. > :21:24.is what you will see at Airbourne. It is brilliant, can we do It

:21:24. > :21:28.Again? It was absolutely fantastic, what a privilege. The blades are

:21:28. > :21:36.one of the world's best aerobatic display teams. They performed

:21:37. > :21:45.earlier on. James from the blades is with us. Tell us about the kind

:21:45. > :21:54.of planes your guys fly? It is a German-built aircraft with

:21:54. > :22:04.formation aerobatics in mind. They really can throw the aircraft

:22:04. > :22:04.

:22:04. > :22:09.around. And all of these people, they are ex Red Arrows pilots?

:22:09. > :22:19.they know what they're doing when they're in the sky. And some of the

:22:19. > :22:24.

:22:24. > :22:28.stunts are extraordinary. Yes, they're all in formation, it is a

:22:28. > :22:33.real crowd-pleaser. I know people have been really enjoying what has

:22:33. > :22:39.been going on today. Polly is in the depths of the crowd. Yes, we

:22:39. > :22:45.keep saying 100,000 visitors. People have actually come from all

:22:45. > :22:51.over the world to attend. This woman has come from New Zealand.

:22:51. > :23:00.What do you make of it? It is different, but it is also the same.

:23:00. > :23:09.This show is amazing. Yes, it is quite incredible. You have come

:23:09. > :23:19.from Loughborough? Yes, indeed. What do you enjoy about it? Seeing

:23:19. > :23:21.

:23:21. > :23:27.the Red Arrows. These girls, what are you enjoying about a day?

:23:27. > :23:37.enjoyed the wing walkers. We do like to do something like that?

:23:37. > :23:39.

:23:39. > :23:45.I would like to fly in red arrow. Hello, this is the other thing, it

:23:45. > :23:51.is so loud here! He has the ear protectors on, this little boy. Is

:23:51. > :24:01.he having a good time? Yes, he is loving it? By your local?

:24:01. > :24:02.

:24:02. > :24:07.Folkestone. -- Are you local? We hope you all enjoyed it. In the

:24:07. > :24:16.meantime, the cloud is setting and so we're hoping they will have a

:24:16. > :24:20.clear view. Yes, plenty of cloud around. Earlier there was plenty of

:24:20. > :24:29.sunshine along the south coast. As we move into the evening, there

:24:29. > :24:36.will be patchy rain and drizzle. It will clear up around lunchtime

:24:36. > :24:41.tomorrow. If you're planning on coming to Eastbourne Airborne over

:24:41. > :24:51.the weekend, ones that rain clears, it will be increasingly trying to

:24:51. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :24:56.the afternoon on Saturday -- dry into the afternoon. Into Sunday,

:24:56. > :25:02.some rain overnight. That should clear through the early hours of

:25:02. > :25:12.Sunday. Plenty of cloud around but fingers crossed for some hazy

:25:12. > :25:17.sunshine. Top temperatures of 21 degrees. As you can see, earlier

:25:17. > :25:27.today it was quite a grey start to the day. Along the south closed

:25:27. > :25:27.

:25:27. > :25:32.plenty of hazy sunshine. -- the south coast. There has been some

:25:32. > :25:37.patchy rain and drizzle. As we move into the night, is similar story.

:25:37. > :25:43.Mostly dry but some patchy rain and drizzle. Not until tomorrow morning

:25:43. > :25:52.that we see some rain. Overnight with the cloud cover it will be
