:00:11. > :00:13.Welcome to South East Today. I'm Rob Smith. And I'm Polly Evans.

:00:13. > :00:17.Tonight's top stories: A guilty plea from the men accused of

:00:17. > :00:22.beheading a Kent pensioner while she was on holiday in India. We are

:00:22. > :00:25.live from her home town of Chatham. 41 truckers give up an hour's wage

:00:25. > :00:33.each week to help a colleague stay at home with his terminally ill

:00:33. > :00:36.children. I can't believe that these guys sacrifice their wage for

:00:36. > :00:39.me. It would like to thank them very much.

:00:39. > :00:42.Also in tonight's programme: More rape claims are dismissed in Kent

:00:42. > :00:44.than anywhere else in the country - campaigners say they are deeply

:00:44. > :00:50.concerned. Around the world on 8,000 litres of

:00:50. > :00:52.cooking oil - the bio-trucker returns from his global adventure.

:00:52. > :01:02.Horns and broadswords - remembering the Viking attack on Canterbury

:01:02. > :01:09.

:01:09. > :01:11.Good evening. Two men accused of kidnapping and beheading a Kent

:01:11. > :01:16.pensioner while she was on holiday visiting relatives in India have

:01:16. > :01:19.pleaded guilty to her murder. Surjit Kaur, a 67-year-old mother-

:01:19. > :01:28.of-three from Chatham, was killed during a trip to the Punjab region

:01:28. > :01:32.earlier this year. Sara Smith reports.

:01:32. > :01:37.At surgeon Corps had gone to India in February for an extended holiday.

:01:37. > :01:42.News of her death reached her family in Kent two months later.

:01:43. > :01:49.There was no closure. We could not say goodbye to my mum. There was no

:01:49. > :01:53.funeral. She had been staying at her son's holiday home in did

:01:53. > :01:57.didn't jab. Seven weeks into her trip she was reported missing. At

:01:57. > :02:03.body was found five days later it hundred miles away. She is

:02:03. > :02:07.understood to have been strangled and beheaded. Today in India two

:02:07. > :02:14.men admitted responsibility, in a case that has attracted much

:02:14. > :02:23.attention in the country. In terms of murder in India, every case is a

:02:23. > :02:29.high-profile case. Whenever British people come back to Punjab, they

:02:29. > :02:35.exercise a lot of influence. They investigation into the death was

:02:35. > :02:43.reduced by the Gillingham MP in Parliament. The Prime Minister more

:02:43. > :02:49.or less but for the Foreign Office opinion that the that

:02:49. > :02:53.responsibility lies with the police in India. Today the MP welcome

:02:53. > :02:57.developments. From where we started to where we are now, where the

:02:57. > :03:02.family have been told that the accused have now pleaded guilty is

:03:03. > :03:08.a long way in obtaining justice for the family. Now the weight is on to

:03:08. > :03:12.see what sentence the court composers.

:03:13. > :03:17.- - imposes. Sara Smith reporting, and she joins us live from Surjit

:03:17. > :03:25.Kaur's home town of Chatham. Sara, what happens to the two men now?

:03:25. > :03:34.The two men may have pleaded guilty, Palmer - - - - it could be a long

:03:34. > :03:38.time before they get their verdict, their sentence. Some details could

:03:38. > :03:43.come out in the trial about what happens and it could give her

:03:43. > :03:46.children here some more information on the details surrounding her

:03:46. > :03:50.death. 41 Kent lorry drivers are giving up

:03:50. > :03:52.an hour's wage every week so their colleague can stay at home with his

:03:52. > :03:55.terminally ill children. Two of Joseph Williams' children have a

:03:55. > :03:59.rare and incurable genetic disorder and his baby daughter is a carrier

:03:59. > :04:01.of the faulty gene. But Joseph and his wife, Faye, say they are

:04:01. > :04:10.determined not to give up hope, even though the medical options

:04:10. > :04:14.have run out. Claudia Sermbezis reports.

:04:14. > :04:19.This seven-year-old child suffers from a syndrome that leads to heart

:04:19. > :04:28.problems and chronic renal failure. Doctors say her time is running out.

:04:28. > :04:38.The they said weeks or months because they can treat her. The

:04:38. > :04:40.

:04:40. > :04:50.drugs will not keep working, and that is it, really, for her. Kidney

:04:50. > :04:55.

:04:55. > :05:00.failure has no cure. She is going to die. Even to keep the failures

:05:00. > :05:04.have no cure, I believe there is something they can drive. Joseph is

:05:04. > :05:10.a match for his doctor, but she has been told that she would not

:05:10. > :05:14.survive the transplant. He works as a lorry driver. All 41 of his

:05:14. > :05:20.colleagues had decided to to make an are of their weekly wage, the

:05:20. > :05:24.company will pay the rest, so just it can be at home on full play.

:05:24. > :05:30.is a lovely fella, a big character and he has one of our team. I think

:05:30. > :05:35.it is great that the boys have rallied round to help them. Not one

:05:36. > :05:40.driver refused to sign. What - - not one driver asked how long it

:05:40. > :05:48.would go on for, we all did because he is such a nice guy and we don't

:05:48. > :05:53.think you should be at work while his child is the way she is. Their

:05:53. > :06:00.generosity has a Maersk a couple. am amazed that it has happened.

:06:00. > :06:04.Abbott like to thank them very much. Their other wee boy, Joseph, has

:06:04. > :06:09.the syndrome and their little girl also is a career, but they are

:06:09. > :06:15.determined to stay positive. need to stay strong and stay

:06:15. > :06:18.together. Keep hoping. In a moment, the first green MP,

:06:18. > :06:28.the first green council, but how much difference is the party

:06:28. > :06:29.

:06:29. > :06:33.More allegations of rape are dismissed as so-called 'no crimes'

:06:33. > :06:38.by Kent Police than by any other force in the country, according to

:06:38. > :06:41.new figures from a BBC Freedom of Information request. In Kent, of

:06:41. > :06:49.304 rape allegations made last year, 30% were dismissed, compared to

:06:49. > :06:54.almost 26% of rape cases in Surrey, but less than 10% in Sussex. The

:06:54. > :06:58.national average is less than12 %. Gloucestershire Police recorded the

:06:58. > :07:00.lowest figure, with just 2% of rape allegations dismissed.

:07:00. > :07:10.Organisations working with rape victims in Kent say they are deeply

:07:10. > :07:13.concerned. This whole categorisation of no crime sent a

:07:13. > :07:17.message to the victim that they are not being believed. We know that

:07:17. > :07:25.the most damaging thing that we can do to the victims his talent but we

:07:25. > :07:28.don't believe them. - - that. So, what is the process for deciding

:07:28. > :07:30.that there is no crime involved in a rape allegation? First, the

:07:30. > :07:33.police will thoroughly investigate the allegations. If necessary,

:07:33. > :07:35.additional evidence, such as CCTV footage may be studied. But if a

:07:35. > :07:38.senior officer or the Crown Prosecution Service decides there's

:07:38. > :07:46.not enough evidence to support the allegation, it's not pursued

:07:46. > :07:50.further and logged as no crime. Kent police are extremely keen to

:07:50. > :07:54.report from the outset any allegation of sexual assault.

:07:54. > :07:58.Perhaps we do this better than some other forces who are not so robust

:07:58. > :08:01.in their recording processes, which is why Kent police have such high

:08:01. > :08:03.figures. Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Yvette Austin, joins

:08:03. > :08:06.us now from Kent Police GHeadquarters in Maidstone. Yvette,

:08:06. > :08:14.these new figures add to long- standing concerns about low

:08:14. > :08:20.conviction rates for rape, don't they? Absolutely. Statistics

:08:20. > :08:24.surrounding reporting rate have been controversial for some years.

:08:24. > :08:29.Back in 2006 a report said that the conviction rates for reported rates

:08:29. > :08:35.stood at just 6%. Many people said that that figure is misleading

:08:35. > :08:38.because conviction rates for those charged this year stands at 71 %.

:08:39. > :08:43.The complaint is that many victims say they don't get the help and

:08:43. > :08:48.support that they need to pursue their claims. Earlier I spoke to

:08:48. > :08:55.one woman who says she has been raid and he has dismissed her claim

:08:55. > :09:00.to anonymity so that she can pursue her interests of talking to us and

:09:00. > :09:05.giving us her experiences. We are at the victim, but almost betrayed

:09:05. > :09:12.as the criminal through the questioning. I don't think a lot of

:09:12. > :09:16.woman can do that and stand-up and give evidence. You heard earlier

:09:16. > :09:21.from a charity that said one of the problems here in Kent, unlike

:09:21. > :09:25.elsewhere, there is not a dedicated centre for sexual abuse victims

:09:25. > :09:29.were they can go for a sympathetic ear and for the treatment but the

:09:29. > :09:31.need away from the harsh surroundings of a police station or

:09:31. > :09:33.a hospital. For the detailed figures from across the country,

:09:33. > :09:40.plus further commentary and analysis, visit our website,

:09:40. > :09:44.bbc.co.uk/news. Four men have been arrested

:09:44. > :09:47.following a ram raid attack on a village shop in Kent. Two 4X4

:09:47. > :09:49.vehicles were used in the early hours of this morning to smash

:09:49. > :09:52.their way into Martin's Newsagent's in Bearsted and remove a cash

:09:52. > :10:01.machine. The men are being questioned at Maidstone Police

:10:01. > :10:07.Station. British Transport Police have increased the number of

:10:07. > :10:12.officers on trains and the south- east after attacks on staff. 10

:10:12. > :10:17.more officers are being deployed on the Medway valley routes. Union

:10:17. > :10:20.representatives say stations are not being sufficiently staffed.

:10:20. > :10:22.Proposals for a second annual half- marathon in Brighton have been

:10:22. > :10:24.withdrawn, following concerns they would damage a long-established

:10:24. > :10:27.event in the city. The Sussex Beacon charity has hosted the

:10:27. > :10:29.city's half-marathon for more than 20 years, with the next one

:10:29. > :10:37.scheduled for February. The Grounded Events Company has

:10:37. > :10:39.withdrawn its request to hold a similar race in October. She's

:10:39. > :10:42.Britain's first ever Green MP and today the Member for Brighton

:10:42. > :10:46.Pavilion, Caroline Lucas, took to the stage in Sheffield to give her

:10:46. > :10:49.Leader's Speech at the party's autumn conference. Her election to

:10:49. > :10:51.Westminster paved the way for Brighton and Hove to become the

:10:51. > :10:54.country's first Green-controlled council. But what impact has her

:10:55. > :11:04.political success had on the ground in Sussex? John Young has been

:11:04. > :11:08.finding out. Who applause today for the leader

:11:08. > :11:12.who is widely seen to have taken the Green Party into the mainstream

:11:12. > :11:18.and to a Paris based on the Sussex coast. For months on, what are the

:11:18. > :11:21.early verdicts under the first green city council? The business

:11:21. > :11:27.community or always going to be hard to please. What is their

:11:27. > :11:33.verdict? We have had 15 years have no vision at all. The Green Party

:11:33. > :11:37.knew what they wanted to go to. We now have a clear vision. If you had

:11:37. > :11:42.asked me this year would I have expected it, the answer would have

:11:42. > :11:49.been, no, I wouldn't have expected to have that opinion. The business

:11:49. > :11:54.score is nine out of 10. Green councillors announced that they had

:11:54. > :11:57.already paid it - - improved pay for look low-paid council workers,

:11:57. > :12:02.and launched radical plans to improve pedestrian routes, but the

:12:02. > :12:07.critics have accused them to field to get rid of 130,000 salaries for

:12:07. > :12:16.tour - - 44 top bosses, the only secondary school and not tackling

:12:16. > :12:20.housing turgidly. This building has been derelict for a number of years.

:12:20. > :12:28.We see buildings that this all across the city derelict with

:12:28. > :12:31.nothing happening. The verdict from Labour, three a dividend. We are

:12:31. > :12:37.wanting to put affordable housing at the top of the list. To say that

:12:37. > :12:44.we haven't done enough in 100 days is a bit harsh. We are doing our

:12:44. > :12:53.best with that. I think that we have done pretty well. Mr Lucas's

:12:53. > :12:57.own score, up 8 1/2 at a 10. Among its voters? About seven out of 10,

:12:57. > :13:03.mainly because Caroline Lucas has been instrumental in helping some

:13:03. > :13:11.friends of mine. Two out of 10 for their policy on the roads and

:13:11. > :13:16.driving. Nine out of 10, for this year's Gay Pride, the way they

:13:16. > :13:20.planned it, the clean-up. The rest of the electorate will be able to

:13:20. > :13:25.give their verdict in May 2015. Our Political Editor, Louise

:13:25. > :13:28.Stewart, is here. So, the party conference season is underway.

:13:28. > :13:34.Louise, what are the challenges for the Greens and the other parties

:13:34. > :13:39.here in the South East? Despite Caroline Lucas's high profile

:13:39. > :13:46.nationally, but hasn't translated to success elsewhere. She needs to

:13:46. > :13:53.build on than in Dubai appealing to disaffected Liberal Democrats.

:13:53. > :13:57.Elsewhere, UKIP have been holding their party. Nigel Farage wants to

:13:57. > :14:05.appeal to disaffected Conservatives. The Conservatives are part of the

:14:05. > :14:10.problem, not the solution. They get their votes by promising to stand

:14:10. > :14:14.up for the nation, and the trip is the never really mean it in the

:14:14. > :14:18.first place. But they are engaged in is an exercise in mass deception

:14:18. > :14:21.and they are being rumbled. Louise, this is just the start of the

:14:21. > :14:26.conference season, what can we expect from the other major

:14:26. > :14:32.parties? The conference season is a time not just for the parties to

:14:32. > :14:36.talk internally, but for us to see how they're doing. What Nick Clegg

:14:36. > :14:42.needs to prove is that he has not been overshadowed in the coalition.

:14:42. > :14:47.The Conservatives need to show that there been robust in the coalition.

:14:47. > :14:51.Ed Miliband needs to prove that he has fulfilled his role as leader

:14:51. > :14:55.and can win back boats in the south-east. It will be a bumpy few

:14:55. > :15:01.weeks for them all. You can find out more on my blog at

:15:01. > :15:04.bbc.co.uk/louisestewart. Or follow me on Twitter at BBCLouise.

:15:04. > :15:06.This is our top story tonight: Two men accused of kidnapping and

:15:07. > :15:10.beheading a Kent pensioner while she was on holiday visiting

:15:11. > :15:13.relatives in India have pleaded guilty to her murder. Surjit Kaur,

:15:13. > :15:20.a 67-year-old mother-of-three from Chatham, was killed during a trip

:15:20. > :15:28.to the Punjab region earlier this year.

:15:28. > :15:33.Also in tonight's programme: Join me to find out how the owners of

:15:33. > :15:37.this track managed to travel 20,000 miles around the world but only

:15:37. > :15:47.paid for fuel once. 1,000 years on, commemorations of

:15:47. > :15:48.

:15:48. > :15:51.the day the Vikings invaded Canterbury.

:15:51. > :15:56.In the aftermath of 9/11, many were afraid to visit the site of the

:15:56. > :16:00.terror attacks. But for Canon Jim Rosenthal, an American who was

:16:00. > :16:03.working at Canterbury Cathedral, it was a trip he felt he had to take.

:16:03. > :16:13.Alex Beard has the last report in our series looking back on the

:16:13. > :16:14.

:16:14. > :16:20.events of 10 years ago. Things have scared me in the past,

:16:20. > :16:25.but nothing like this because it was just too big. Despite an

:16:25. > :16:30.international nervousness to fly after nine 11th, Father Jim flew a

:16:30. > :16:34.week after the attacks to go to New York hands realised he no longer

:16:34. > :16:40.recognised the city. They were still looking for bodies. It was

:16:40. > :16:48.horrific. I went to the sight of a church that was crushed to the

:16:48. > :16:52.ground. I have been in that church many times. It had just disappeared.

:16:52. > :16:59.He went to a neighbouring church on Wall Street have to console shocked

:16:59. > :17:05.New Yorkers. Everybody now knows what some pulsed chapel is because

:17:05. > :17:09.it became a hospital, canteen, a place for people could sleep, posed

:17:09. > :17:13.pictures of the departed. It was an incredible experience for me to

:17:14. > :17:18.spend time with them and walk through the rubble. I probably

:17:18. > :17:24.cried more during that time than a my whole life. These experiences

:17:24. > :17:33.led him to set up awareness Sunday, a chance to reflect on 9/11. It is

:17:33. > :17:36.now celebrated and 22 countries. - - in a 22 countries.

:17:36. > :17:45.You can see all three of Alex Beard's reports on the 9/11 attacks

:17:45. > :17:48.It was a mad-cap adventure by an environmental activist, to see just

:17:48. > :17:58.how far you could travel in a battered old van powered solely by

:17:58. > :17:58.

:17:58. > :18:01.cooking oil. Andy Pag set off two years ago and circled the globe,

:18:01. > :18:04.clocking up 20,000 miles and travelling through 25 countries all

:18:04. > :18:11.on 8,000 litres of used cooking oil. Today, he ended his epic voyage

:18:11. > :18:18.back in Dover and our reporter Peter Whittlesea is there now. The

:18:18. > :18:23.so-called bio-truck has taken quite a battering, hasn't it, Peter?

:18:23. > :18:28.It certainly has. He bought this for 800 after it finished as like

:18:28. > :18:36.as a school bus in Preston. It lost its windscreen, white purse, and

:18:36. > :18:42.the engine had to be rebuilt in India. They look like pictures from

:18:42. > :18:46.a Hollywood film about a guy he builds an Eco camper from a heap of

:18:46. > :18:52.trash then goes on at 20,000 mile road trip around the World's

:18:52. > :18:57.finding love on the way. For Andy, that is not movie magic, it is the

:18:57. > :19:04.last two years of his life. I had this idea of driving around the

:19:04. > :19:08.world, but a wanted to do it sustainably. This is an experiment

:19:08. > :19:14.to see if it can be done in a sustainable way. Some things have

:19:14. > :19:17.worked really well, the idea of using waste cooking oil. I was

:19:17. > :19:22.surprised as anybody else to realise it can be done right the

:19:22. > :19:27.way around the world. An American freelance journalist did an article

:19:27. > :19:32.about him, Andy Phelan love over the Internet and Christina finally

:19:32. > :19:39.joined in Indonesia. With its on board will refinery and composting

:19:39. > :19:46.toilet, unusual odours were the only obstacle to romance. That is

:19:46. > :19:50.the compost toilet! His feats and the compost toilet. I have

:19:50. > :19:55.essential oils and incense, but none of it really works together

:19:55. > :20:00.that the smell! Despite the smells, they are now engaged. Dover may be

:20:00. > :20:06.the end of this road trip, but a sequel to Africa is already planned.

:20:06. > :20:12.It is the aroma that made me stutter earlier! This is all

:20:12. > :20:18.completely reclaimed. The special likes, they are from solar panels

:20:18. > :20:22.on the roof, and in here is the infamous Eco toilet that nearly

:20:22. > :20:28.jeopardised their romance. Andy has promised to clear that out before

:20:28. > :20:35.they go on their next trip. In here of the aroma is smiled Camembert, I

:20:35. > :20:39.would say. Herne Bay may not have produced too

:20:39. > :20:42.many Olympic medal winners in the past, but that could be about to

:20:42. > :20:45.change. Dan Ritchie won a silver medal at the World Rowing

:20:45. > :20:55.Championships last weekend and today he came back to Herne Bay to

:20:55. > :20:57.

:20:57. > :21:01.help inspire pupils at his old school, as Neil Bell reports.

:21:01. > :21:05.At 24, Dan Ritchie appears to have a long career ahead of him. His

:21:05. > :21:09.target is not just to make it to the London Games, but the next

:21:09. > :21:15.three Olympics. This afternoon he was guest of honour at his old

:21:15. > :21:19.school. If you get into the British team, you are expected to get a

:21:19. > :21:25.medal. There is a lot of expectation on us by the public,

:21:25. > :21:33.but more comes from our cells. was back at the school to open and

:21:33. > :21:40.you sport and leisure project. Dan to be opening this facility, we

:21:40. > :21:46.could not ask for a better person. He is a Herne Bay boy, a student of

:21:46. > :21:53.the school and now a potential Olympian. Last weekend he was

:21:53. > :21:57.taking on the world's best, but he will get the chance tomorrow to

:23:16. > :23:22.It was one of the bloodiest episodes the South East has ever

:25:01. > :25:08.down through chronicles. Every man, every house them come every wife,

:25:08. > :25:14.every monk, every man was taken to slavery. Writing well after the

:25:14. > :25:19.events, a writer said that of a population of 8000 only 800 survive

:25:19. > :25:24.the siege. The whole reason why they sacked Canterbury was because

:25:24. > :25:29.the English occupant had failed to pay the money. Maybe if they had
