:01:29. > :01:34.additional 300 staff at its site in Sandwich. Last February, the
:01:34. > :01:42.company announced it would pull off the side completely and lose 2,400
:01:42. > :01:48.skilled jobs. Since then, the site has been renamed it discovery prion
:01:48. > :01:53.-- Discovery Park. In total, nearly prices many jobs as previously

:01:57. > :02:02.the kind of highly skilled scientists who have been at the
:02:02. > :02:07.cutting edge of science here since the 1950s. Last February, the

:02:13. > :02:23.dozen 400 jobs. In June, they pledged to retain 350 staff, now it
:02:23. > :02:27.has been announced six and and 50 jobs will be saved. When we
:02:27. > :02:29.announced the move away from the side, we were exploring other
:02:29. > :02:35.opportunities. We ultimately decided the best option was to
:02:35. > :02:38.retain those scientists here at Discovery Park. Today's
:02:38. > :02:43.announcement offers some relief after a lengthy battle to soften
:02:43. > :02:48.the blow to the south-east's economy. In August, the area became
:02:48. > :02:58.one of 13 in the UK to be cut -- granted enterprise zone status. It
:02:58. > :03:08.was awarded �40 million in regional growth funds. We got a grant for
:03:08. > :03:09.
:03:09. > :03:13.unique discoveries. We want people to enjoy the enormous success that
:03:13. > :03:17.why they have had in Sandwich. During a visit to the side, George
:03:17. > :03:24.Osborne said that enterprise zone status would encourage new start-up
:03:24. > :03:28.businesses and other investors. But despite the optimism, 800 rolls
:03:28. > :03:35.have already garnered Sandwich, with a further 700 Ross to go,
:03:35. > :03:42.which means a total of 1,500 redundancies. -- with a further 700
:03:42. > :03:50.to go. We have been actively working on marketing of this site,
:03:50. > :03:56.of Discovery Park, in order to find new investors and users of the site,
:03:56. > :04:03.to ensure that there is a successful moth the company future
:04:04. > :04:09.here at Discovery Park. It is hoped that Pfizer's decision to retain
:04:09. > :04:13.staff may encourage more spin-off companies to set up there as well.
:04:13. > :04:16.Joining us now from Sandwich is the MP for Thanet South Laura Sandys -
:04:16. > :04:19.some good news, but it is still really only a small slice of silver

:04:34. > :04:41.side. It is a great blow to lose so many jobs, but we are starting to
:04:41. > :04:45.get a critical mass on the site that will actually take us to the
:04:45. > :04:52.next stage in marketing the site and getting success. Do we know why
:04:52. > :04:56.Pfizer have decided to do this? think they have looked at their
:04:56. > :05:01.business model and decided that they need more support staff and
:05:01. > :05:08.more business staff around the clinical and scientific side, that
:05:08. > :05:12.they decided to keep on over the summer. I think it now we are in a
:05:12. > :05:21.situation where, with 700 jobs on the side, we can start to look at
:05:21. > :05:31.those spin out, former prize the people, look at attracting some a
:05:31. > :05:36.small businesses. So you think would fight the spending more time
:05:36. > :05:42.and effort there, the more likely other businesses are to move in?
:05:42. > :05:49.Absolutely. What is important is that the smaller companies want to
:05:49. > :05:52.be close to a big pharmaceutical company like Pfeiffer.
:05:52. > :05:56.Inside Out have a special programme on Monday where they will be
:05:56. > :06:02.looking at the future of the economy in east Kent after a
:06:02. > :06:06.fighter. With interest rates at record lows,
:06:06. > :06:09.some savers struggling to get a good return on their deposits are
:06:09. > :06:14.taking unnecessary risks with their money by investing in a relatively
:06:14. > :06:17.worthless but the bland. Trading standards are warning investors to
:06:17. > :06:20.beware of what is known as land banking schemes, where plots of
:06:20. > :06:24.land assault with the possibility of planning permission in the
:06:24. > :06:30.future. Increasingly, that planning permission does not materialise and
:06:30. > :06:33.investors lose out. This woman is the owner of a plot of land in
:06:33. > :06:37.Warwickshire which she bought after being called called by a salesman.
:06:37. > :06:42.She got it would be a good investment for her grandchildren.
:06:42. > :06:46.That makes sense, that is a good investment. I was so proud I had
:06:46. > :06:56.done it. The paperwork came through and I was growing. I put it away
:06:56. > :06:59.
:07:00. > :07:07.and I thought it was lovely. being paid to �11,500 for this plot
:07:07. > :07:17.of land near Redditch. After she would do it -- receive the
:07:17. > :07:21.paperwork, it was obvious to her that she would get planning -- that
:07:21. > :07:24.she would not get planning permission. I thought it would be
:07:24. > :07:33.lovely to have something to give the grandchildren when they are all
:07:33. > :07:37.do. I felt violated, I felt like I had been stolen from. I had
:07:37. > :07:42.discovered that the company which ultimately sold the land to Vivien
:07:42. > :07:47.was investigated by the Insolvency Service in May this year. They
:07:47. > :07:52.found that the company caused it customers to purchase the plots of
:07:52. > :07:55.land at an excessive owner of -- over value, when they ought to have
:07:55. > :07:58.known that there with little prospect of the land achieving
:07:58. > :08:03.planning permission for residential development. As a result of this
:08:03. > :08:09.investigation, those behind the company were disqualified as
:08:09. > :08:13.directors. Just as you have a cold call are coming to your door to do
:08:13. > :08:17.building work, don't trust anybody who calls for a good investment.
:08:17. > :08:26.They don't go around writing to people or trying to get customers
:08:26. > :08:35.in that way. The Purchaser will only use the land for farm land.
:08:35. > :08:45.The Insolvency Service and -- estimates of that it has cost a lot
:08:45. > :08:47.of money for those affected. In a moment: A tall order.

:13:37. > :13:41.group of people in East Kent have vowed to fight plans to demolish
:13:41. > :13:46.the towers at Richborough Power Station. Locals have described them
:13:46. > :13:55.as a landmark in the area and a monument to 1960s industry. On the
:13:55. > :13:58.east coast of Kent near Sandwich, they've been out of use since 1996.
:13:58. > :14:00.Now managers of the site want to demolish them to make way for a
:14:00. > :14:06.green energy park. Our environment correspondent, Yvette Austin, has
:14:06. > :14:15.tonight's special report. It has been part of the landscape
:14:15. > :14:19.for 50 years. For local photographer, Annie, it is a
:14:19. > :14:23.passion. The wonderful thing about the powers is that they move. When
:14:23. > :14:29.you think they are on your left, you go down in the car, and
:14:29. > :14:36.suddenly, they are on your right. They change were the weather. They
:14:36. > :14:43.become at mysterious in the autumn. They are fantastic. Richborough
:14:43. > :14:53.Power Station opened in 1962, and for the next 40 years, boiled oil
:14:53. > :14:53.
:14:53. > :14:59.and coal. Much of the Power Station has been reduced to a shelf. Some
:14:59. > :15:06.say, they are a monument -- monument to 1960s industry, others
:15:06. > :15:12.argue they are an eyesore. powers are beautiful objects in
:15:12. > :15:17.their own right. They are sublime. They help people to navigate.
:15:17. > :15:23.People feel like they are coming home. It will be nice to see them
:15:23. > :15:29.go. They are a bit of a blot on the landscape. It would be fun watching
:15:29. > :15:39.them come down. The last major demolition of such a
:15:39. > :15:43.
:15:43. > :15:46.construction happened near Sheffield in 2008. A similar
:15:46. > :15:51.spectacle is planned for Richborough to make way for green
:15:51. > :15:57.energy park, turning waste into heat for local homes and businesses,
:15:57. > :16:02.and PoW for the National Grid. don't have any historical
:16:02. > :16:05.significance. They are structurally unsound. We are also tried to
:16:06. > :16:10.create jobs for the area, so bringing them down brings the side
:16:10. > :16:14.back into use, and hopefully, we will be able to put something else
:16:14. > :16:24.that becomes a monument for the future. A public consultation has
:16:24. > :16:32.
:16:32. > :16:35.just closed. It is well up to local councillors to decide their fate.
:16:35. > :16:37.They are perhaps the least understood of Britain's seal
:16:37. > :16:40.populations, and now, the mysterious seals of the South East
:16:40. > :16:42.coast have been investigated. In the return of Autumnwatch to BBC
:16:42. > :16:50.Two, wildlife cameraman Richard Taylor-Jones took a helicopter to
:16:50. > :16:54.the Goodwin Sands in the Channel to put the seals under the spotlight.
:16:55. > :17:00.Over 1,000 ships and more lives have been lost here. Offshore
:17:00. > :17:06.sandbanks stretching 12 miles. The pressure is on, but as the tide
:17:06. > :17:14.comes in, it is desolate desert island which turns to quicksand,
:17:14. > :17:20.been engulfed by the sea. I found at our first seals, look!
:17:20. > :17:25.They are just down here, by the serve. These are grey seals. There
:17:25. > :17:33.is no doubt about it. They have parallel nostrils running down
:17:33. > :17:38.their nose. It is an absolute giveaway.
:17:38. > :17:48.It looks like a group of males with their long, white noses and dainty
:17:48. > :17:53.looking females. But, there is something that doesn't add up. The
:17:53. > :18:03.seals just can't be breeding here. This is the tidal sand bank, and
:18:03. > :18:09.every few hours it is covered by water. They would be washed away.
:18:09. > :18:15.The helicopter is returning. One of the very few local people looking
:18:15. > :18:20.at these animals is this man. think these are non breeding
:18:20. > :18:27.populations. They are trying out their interactions. So this is like
:18:27. > :18:32.a youth club? I think it is! I was expecting to see some common seals
:18:32. > :18:37.out here, but they don't seem to be any at all. Common seals have not
:18:37. > :18:42.actually been a very common. Finding that the grey seals has
:18:42. > :18:46.been a revelation. However, I have had a tip-off about more seals on
:18:46. > :18:49.the mainland, and that is where I am headed.

:20:41. > :20:45.satisfaction of thinking her art has drawn crowds to the real thing.
