:00:10. > :00:15.Welcome to the programme. Tonight's top stories: Accused of conspiring

:00:16. > :00:20.to sell missile parts to Iran, a Kent businessman will be extradited

:00:20. > :00:23.to the US to face charges. We are live at the High Court, where

:00:23. > :00:26.Christopher Tappin lost his legal fight.

:00:26. > :00:30.Cut down exclusions - concerns over the disproportionate number of

:00:30. > :00:34.students expelled from academies in Kent.

:00:34. > :00:37.Waiting for the axe to fall - how the Gurkhas could be the most badly

:00:37. > :00:42.affected regiment in the next round of redundancies.

:00:42. > :00:45.Closed down the tiger farms - the Sussex Wildlife artist campaigning

:00:45. > :00:51.for the illegal trade in China to be stopped.

:00:51. > :00:55.The egg has gone! I cannot believe my eyes!

:00:55. > :01:05.And the Kent magician who has been teaching pupils a few tricks that

:01:05. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:16.Good evening. A retired a Kent businessman accused of trying to

:01:16. > :01:21.export part to Iranian -- for Iranian missiles has lost his

:01:21. > :01:25.appeal against plans to extradite him to the US to stand trial.

:01:25. > :01:28.Christopher Tappin, the President of the Kent Golf Union, as always

:01:28. > :01:32.claimed he believed he was exporting batteries to the European

:01:32. > :01:37.car industry. He faces up to 35 years in jail if convicted in

:01:37. > :01:40.America. Christopher Tappin now knows he

:01:41. > :01:45.will probably face trial for conspiracy to export missile parts

:01:45. > :01:50.in a Texan court. And absolutely devastated because I won't get a

:01:50. > :01:55.fair trial. All my witnesses that in this country and we can't test

:01:55. > :01:59.the evidence because the evidence is all in America, and we never had

:01:59. > :02:03.the opportunity for the British courts to look at the evidence.

:02:03. > :02:06.Christopher Tappin, who worked for a shipping firm, has always tonight

:02:06. > :02:09.knowing the batteries he was helping to export were four Iranian

:02:09. > :02:13.missiles. He said he believed they were for the car industry in the

:02:13. > :02:19.Netherlands. He was trapped by US agents who had set up a fake

:02:19. > :02:23.company which dealt with the deal. He was arrested at his home in 2010.

:02:23. > :02:29.Last February, a judge ruled he could be extradited for trial in

:02:29. > :02:34.America. Today, his appeal against that ruling was dismissed.

:02:34. > :02:38.It is quite difficult to overturn an extradition decision from a

:02:38. > :02:42.district judge up. The whole point of extradition with countries like

:02:42. > :02:47.the United States and Europe is that we trust their legal systems,

:02:47. > :02:53.they trust our legal systems. Christopher Tappin wants, though,

:02:53. > :02:56.is to face trial here and he has some support. Liberty is calling on

:02:56. > :03:00.a British judge to be able to consider whether it is in the

:03:00. > :03:05.interests of justice for a person to be prosecuted in the UK or

:03:05. > :03:12.shipped off to face the crumb of Exeter did -- extradition. The only

:03:12. > :03:16.chance for him to avoid extradition now it lies with the Supreme Court.

:03:16. > :03:19.A you can only appear to the Supreme Court. Now we have the

:03:20. > :03:24.judgment, we are going to look through it to decide whether there

:03:24. > :03:31.is a point of law and we are very hopeful there will be. For now,

:03:31. > :03:34.Christopher Tappin's wait goes on. The number of pupils being expelled

:03:34. > :03:40.from academies in Kent is disproportionate and a matter of

:03:40. > :03:45.concern, according to educate and leaders. Last year, 237 pupils were

:03:45. > :03:50.permanently excluded from schools and the county. Of those, 103 were

:03:50. > :03:54.from council-run secondary schools but 95 were from independently run

:03:54. > :03:57.academies, which make up just one third of the total schools in the

:03:57. > :04:05.county. The council now wants to reduce the number of excluded

:04:05. > :04:11.pupils from all schools to just 50 a year by 2015.

:04:11. > :04:14.This former says the education system has failed her sons. I got a

:04:14. > :04:19.phone call to say they want to exclude my son for the next four

:04:19. > :04:22.days. Her elder son has severe dyslexia and has been excluded a

:04:22. > :04:28.number of times for his behaviour. Last year, he was excluded

:04:28. > :04:34.permanently. A I would rather they actually looked at the issue - why

:04:34. > :04:37.is this boy being considered for exclusion? There has always got to

:04:37. > :04:44.be an underlying reason and if they can find that and tackle that

:04:44. > :04:48.reason, maybe there would be no need for an exclusion. He is one of

:04:48. > :04:53.198 pupils excluded from secondary education last year. Nearly half of

:04:53. > :04:57.those came from academies. One academy Head Teachers says he has

:04:57. > :05:01.had to exclude two people's this year but it is a last resort.

:05:01. > :05:04.have high standards and when we get to the stage where we are just not

:05:04. > :05:09.working with that student and a continuing -- and they are

:05:09. > :05:14.continuing to break the rules and disrupt and cause mayhem, we do

:05:14. > :05:17.take that decision to permit Lee exclude. The council's education

:05:17. > :05:24.committee has been a meeting today to work out how they can reduce

:05:24. > :05:28.those numbers. -- permanently exclude. The council have

:05:28. > :05:32.commissioned a report in how to progress. A very disappointing

:05:32. > :05:36.figures. We have been seeing a decreasing trend in the number of

:05:36. > :05:40.exclusions from school in the last five years, which has been very

:05:40. > :05:44.positive. This has been disappointing to us in the last

:05:44. > :05:50.year to see a rise. Carel weight of expelled pupils and their families

:05:50. > :05:55.and says exclusions should be avoided. If you exclude any child

:05:55. > :06:00.from school he will have a very negative impact on them. That is a

:06:00. > :06:06.queer and resounding no to you. changes to exclusion policy may

:06:06. > :06:10.come too late for this woman and her sons. She welcomes any changes

:06:10. > :06:15.to the system. -- Clear and a resounding no.

:06:15. > :06:23.Coming up: Eastbourne's dark past. A new film reveals the genteel

:06:23. > :06:28.seaside town used to be a hotbed of rioting.

:06:28. > :06:32.There are fears that cuts to the army due to be announced next week

:06:32. > :06:35.could fall most heavily on Kent- based Gurkhas. More than 100 lost

:06:36. > :06:41.their jobs because of cuts last year and there are concerns that

:06:41. > :06:47.changes to the solders' employment terms following to one a lovely's

:06:47. > :06:52.de 1009 campaign make the regiment vulnerable. -- Joanna Lumley's

:06:52. > :06:55.campaign in 2009. In the second round of army cuts,

:06:55. > :07:00.it is predicted that the Gurkhas will face more redundancies than

:07:00. > :07:09.other regiments. That has led former Gurkhas to say this could be

:07:09. > :07:13.the beginning of the end. Cutting down at this way indicates to me

:07:13. > :07:21.that one day Britain will lose one of the bravest soldiers in the

:07:21. > :07:31.world, and it's also raised -- embraced the very great history

:07:31. > :07:34.

:07:34. > :07:44.between two countries. -- deleted the history. As a result of changes

:07:44. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:53.to the Gurkha buts' employment terms, there were more than needed.

:07:53. > :07:57.And none of us want to see more reductions in service of the

:07:57. > :08:00.Gurkhas. If there of reductions and the numbers, we want to know why

:08:00. > :08:06.they are being made and why the level of redundancies is being made.

:08:06. > :08:10.Last year, 140 Gurkhas were made redundant with 12 months' notice.

:08:10. > :08:17.To meet MoD targets, hundreds more could lose their jobs when the

:08:17. > :08:22.announcement is made next week. Peter joins us from a barracks in

:08:22. > :08:27.Folkestone. What have the MoD had to say? At a moment, the MoD are

:08:27. > :08:31.saying that redundancies are merely speculation. The scale and which

:08:31. > :08:35.rain to mince will be affected will not be announced until Tuesday -

:08:35. > :08:40.but regiments will be affected. But they say that the Brigade of

:08:40. > :08:44.Gurkhas is still overmanned. If there are cuts, it will be bitterly

:08:44. > :08:48.opposed by the local community which holds them in huge regard.

:08:49. > :08:53.This was the birthplace of the Decca justice campaign which saw

:08:53. > :08:59.them give it equal rights to British soldiers. -- Gurkha it

:08:59. > :09:03.justice campaign. But be but I do it has made them very expensive.

:09:03. > :09:07.The father of a teenager left brain damage after being attacked in

:09:07. > :09:11.Bexhill last year has banged the local community for their support.

:09:11. > :09:20.16-year-old Mo Bourner was beaten unconscious in October. Since then,

:09:20. > :09:23.many in the town have raised money to help with his rehabilitation.

:09:23. > :09:26.Brighton University Medical student Mundill Mahil was worried that TV

:09:26. > :09:31.executive Gagandip Singh was in danger from their gangster friends

:09:31. > :09:34.one month before he was killed, an Old Bailey jury was told today. A

:09:34. > :09:38.friend of Mundill Mahil told the court that some of her friends or

:09:38. > :09:44.wanted to take matters into their own hands after Gagandip Singh had

:09:44. > :09:46.allegedly attempted to rape her. Mundill Mahil denies murder.

:09:46. > :09:52.A one a-month-old baby taken to hospital with serious injuries has

:09:52. > :09:56.been released into the care of foster parents. A man and a woman

:09:56. > :10:01.from Gravesend who were arrested on suspicion of the salt in December

:10:01. > :10:04.remain on police bail. -- assault. Despite the worldwide ban on

:10:04. > :10:08.hunting tigers and trading in their third and body parts, Ben numbers

:10:08. > :10:12.have still been fallen catastrophically. Now a Sussex

:10:12. > :10:18.Wildlife artist is leading a campaign for Tiger pommes in China,

:10:18. > :10:25.where the animals are bred for the illegal trade in medicine, to be

:10:25. > :10:30.shut down. -- tie get farms. Thai days in captivity here at the

:10:30. > :10:34.Heritage Foundation near Ashford. They are given the best of care.

:10:34. > :10:40.Away from their luxury confines, it is a different story, which

:10:40. > :10:46.campaigners contend. Chinese tiger up bombs. They are farming taggers

:10:46. > :10:49.on an industrial scale, like battery hens. Very small enclosures,

:10:49. > :10:53.half-starved, being used as entertainment for tourists. They

:10:53. > :10:58.are doing that because there is still a trade in tiger parts in

:10:58. > :11:01.Tiger - and China. This artist is behind a new petition which he

:11:01. > :11:07.hopes can soon be presented to the Chinese government. He wants the

:11:07. > :11:11.ban on all trade in tiger parts properly enforced. We can't survive

:11:11. > :11:16.on this planet if we destroy everything around us. Every species

:11:16. > :11:21.we destroy it is our own self- destruction. A campaign to save the

:11:21. > :11:26.tiger is also involving breeding programmes. These clubs are

:11:27. > :11:30.Sumatran tigers of which there are only around 250 left in the world.

:11:30. > :11:35.If and when the poaching is controlled, there may be a chance

:11:35. > :11:40.for the recovery. We try to keep the captive breeding programme

:11:40. > :11:45.going with the hope that we can, at some point in the near future, be

:11:45. > :11:50.in a position where we can restock the wild in some shape. We cannot

:11:50. > :11:56.turn the clock back and the world as they do from place to 100 years

:11:56. > :12:00.ago but there is hope for the tiger. -- a different place. The campaign

:12:00. > :12:03.is supported by many celebrities and last year, Jeremy Brown told

:12:03. > :12:08.former model Samantha Fox that he would approach the Chinese

:12:08. > :12:14.government. Let me raised it with the Chinese again. It will you?

:12:14. > :12:17.course I will. Today, the Foreign Office said the minister has urged

:12:17. > :12:22.China to operators zero-tolerance policy towards the trade. As for

:12:22. > :12:31.the farms, the Chinese government says they help prevent poaching.

:12:31. > :12:36.Campaigners disagree and say they only fuel it. Pressure is mounting.

:12:36. > :12:41.This is her tonight's tot story: A retired a Kent businessman has lost

:12:41. > :12:45.his High Court appeal against being extradited to the US on charges of

:12:45. > :12:47.conspiracy to sell parts for Iranian missiles.

:12:47. > :12:52.Christopher Tappin denies the charges and had fought against

:12:52. > :12:58.going to America for trial, saying his ill or wife relied on him for

:12:58. > :13:03.care. Also coming up: It help -- by a supply teacher is magic.

:13:03. > :13:11.We need the supply teacher who has been paid to confuse youngsters in

:13:11. > :13:17.the classroom. It was one of the most exciting

:13:17. > :13:24.races at Brands Hatch ever. Now a Tommy Hill has made it to the big

:13:24. > :13:27.Eastbourne has the reputation of being a somewhat genteel seaside

:13:27. > :13:32.resort today, but in the early 1890s, a trip to the town on a

:13:32. > :13:35.Sunday was often overshadowed by rioting. In fact, many people

:13:35. > :13:38.visited Eastbourne just to view the spectacle as the Salvation Army

:13:38. > :13:44.band openly defied the law by marching through the streets to be

:13:44. > :13:54.met by organised gangs. The remarkable story is now the subject

:13:54. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:06.of a docudrama. They were called the skeleton army, a gang raised by

:14:06. > :14:16.hotelier's, concerned about the Salvation Army's attitude to

:14:16. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:29.alcohol. They were hit with staves, the Salvation Army women had their

:14:29. > :14:35.skirts pulled down, and were abused. The men were hit so that I am sure

:14:35. > :14:39.there were many injuries, quite serious ones, sustained. The

:14:39. > :14:45.Salvation Army marched in defiance of the Eastbourne improvement Act

:14:45. > :14:51.which legislated against marching with music. Every Sunday, they

:14:51. > :14:55.would take to the streets. Every Sunday, there would be battles. As

:14:55. > :15:00.they marched along the seafront, it would not only be the bandsmen

:15:00. > :15:04.attacked, but their instruments as well. This is one of the bugles

:15:04. > :15:09.from the march, and as you can see, it has been bashed about by the

:15:09. > :15:16.rioting. Now a drama by local film- makers aims to bring this piece of

:15:16. > :15:21.history to live. It tells the story Of and Eastbourne fishermen who

:15:21. > :15:28.tried to defend the marchers. were known as the Three Musketeers.

:15:28. > :15:34.That is how it all started. And that the event before he became a

:15:34. > :15:38.salvation must. He gave up the drink and took up the pledged. -- 8

:15:38. > :15:47.Salvation Army member. There is a piece of history to read that is

:15:47. > :15:54.not known. It is a bit gritty! bylaw was repealed in 1892. The

:15:54. > :16:01.most aggressive thing on the seafront but this sea gulls today.

:16:01. > :16:04.-- are the sea gulls. It's a great premise for a TV show

:16:04. > :16:06.- where magicians are sent into schools, pretending to be supply

:16:06. > :16:16.teachers, and inexplicable, strange and magical things start happening

:16:16. > :16:17.

:16:17. > :16:20.in the classroom. One of the stars of the new BBC series starting next

:16:20. > :16:30.week is Fergus Flannagan from Tunbridge Wells - we'll be speaking

:16:30. > :16:34.

:16:34. > :16:43.to him in a moment. But first, Wait until they, and you, see the

:16:43. > :16:50.trick coming up. Remember, there is an egg and a piece of paper in the

:16:51. > :16:56.jar. That micro fibre will begin to slowly absorbed. And now there is

:16:56. > :17:00.just the paper! Their egg has gone! I cannot believe my eyes.

:17:00. > :17:09.Well, earlier on today we sent Fergus out onto the streets of Kent

:17:09. > :17:14.and asked him to work his magic. This is the eight of clubs. If you

:17:14. > :17:23.watch it closely, you will see the moment it changes to the nine of

:17:23. > :17:29.clubs. Now look in your hand. You have got their eight of clubs.

:17:29. > :17:38.Don't let me force you to pick a card. Whatever you do, I might try

:17:38. > :17:47.and influence you, but I want to know what the top card is. Eight of

:17:47. > :17:54.clubs? You see! Now I will cut up to another card. I will use the

:17:54. > :18:01.eight of clubs. Eight of spades. Is that book one? Kelly, thank you

:18:01. > :18:10.very much that your time. -- is that the one. Can you just push the

:18:10. > :18:15.card in for me? Oh my gosh! How did you do that?!

:18:15. > :18:18.Fergus is with us now. The TV programme must have been fun to

:18:18. > :18:27.make. What reaction did you get from the pupils when they

:18:27. > :18:32.discovered you were a magician? children responded unbelievably.

:18:32. > :18:38.They just went nuts! We were all worried because I remember being at

:18:38. > :18:45.school, and when you had a supply teacher in, you thought "brilliant,

:18:45. > :18:51.I will cause a riot!" but they have responded so well. When they found

:18:51. > :18:58.out they would be on CBBC, then it was great. A did any tricks go

:18:58. > :19:03.wrong? Thankfully not. And we did not get rumbled either. It was an

:19:03. > :19:08.amazing piece of organisation from the production company and parents.

:19:08. > :19:18.We cannot have you here without doing a bit of the magic here fast.

:19:18. > :19:26.The of course not. A quick trick. Rob, left-handed? Yes. Place your

:19:26. > :19:34.right hand on doubled the deck. Think of any card in your mind. And

:19:34. > :19:42.then, on account of three, two, one, I want to change your mind to a new

:19:42. > :19:48.card. I did that to avoid Kingswood is a common joys, and queens. -- A,

:19:48. > :19:57.no choice. What is the card you are thinking of? I thought of the queen

:19:57. > :20:02.of hearts. Very interesting. One card, I made a prediction on. You

:20:02. > :20:10.chose the queen of hearts. Tell me, if you see anything that looks a

:20:10. > :20:19.bit different, you might notice, there is one face down. Look at

:20:19. > :20:22.that! That his magic! Thank you for coming in. Good luck with the

:20:22. > :20:31.programme. Help! My Supply Teacher Is Magic is

:20:31. > :20:35.on CBBC from next Tuesday. Talking of magic, last weekend's

:20:35. > :20:38.football was all about the magic of the Cup, but tomorrow, all our

:20:38. > :20:41.teams turn their attention back to the League. Neil Bell is in Chatham

:20:41. > :20:45.for that, plus I understand you've got details of how a champion

:20:45. > :20:50.superbike rider from the South East is set to become a star on the big

:20:50. > :20:52.screen? When Tommy Hill, from Lingfield,

:20:52. > :20:55.was crowned the 2011 British Superbikes Champion, it was after

:20:55. > :20:59.one of the greatest races even seen at Brands Hatch. Now, his exploits

:20:59. > :21:09.will be shown at 120 cinemas across the country in a new film charting

:21:09. > :21:10.

:21:10. > :21:19.all the drama of last season's extraordinary championship. You may

:21:19. > :21:28.have never been to, or seemed, bike racing, but this film will grab you.

:21:28. > :21:35.The film charts a highs and lows of last season, and its epic finale.

:21:35. > :21:41.For local hero Tommy Hill, it was an opportunity to but the pain of

:21:41. > :21:51.2010 behind him. There are a lot of knock backs in many sports. I have

:21:51. > :21:58.

:21:58. > :22:08.lost part of my internal body. To Basics month-long season came down

:22:08. > :22:17.

:22:17. > :22:22.to the last lap of a last race, He just had to win. This stand here

:22:22. > :22:28.was basically the Tommy Hill fan club - flags and so on. That must

:22:28. > :22:37.be used so much good, when you are sat here, on your bike and about to

:22:37. > :22:40.set-off. It was fantastic. story is so gripping that Tommy

:22:40. > :22:47.Hill says there are those that find it difficult to tell fact from

:22:47. > :22:55.fiction. There is a make-up artist that birds holes in your arms. That

:22:55. > :23:02.is all real. -- that put holes. I am not an actor. This is what the

:23:02. > :23:07.film shows - if you seek gruesome scars, but is made. With the cinema

:23:07. > :23:14.release around the country, the timing of's remarkable story could

:23:14. > :23:17.inspire an audience well beyond his already huge army of fans.

:23:17. > :23:19.Brighton take on Championship strugglers Bristol City at the Amex,

:23:19. > :23:22.hoping that Craig Mackail Smith can rediscover his goal-scoring touch.
