:00:07. > :00:11.Unrepentant, the gang jailed for the killing of a Kent businessman.

:00:11. > :00:14.We promise you this was a general accident. No one had the intention

:00:14. > :00:17.of getting hurt. That's what happens when you come out to be a

:00:17. > :00:21.hero. 36 years prison for the gang members, Julian Gardner's family

:00:21. > :00:24.say it's the only justifiable result. Those now convicted feel

:00:24. > :00:30.they had the right to steal all Julian had worked for, but

:00:30. > :00:33.succeeded in only robbing him of his life.

:00:33. > :00:38.Uncertainty for 570 British Airways staff at Gatwick, facing redundancy

:00:38. > :00:41.or transfer to another company. We'll have the details live from

:00:41. > :00:44.the airport tonight. Also in tonight's programme.

:00:44. > :00:48.Making medical history, the little boy who was kept alive by an

:00:48. > :00:51.artificial heart for 251 days. The hi-tech cocoon that protects

:00:51. > :01:01.babies in the event of a car crash, the brain child of a Brighton

:01:04. > :01:06.organisation the Winkle Club and is presented with a gold and pelt

:01:06. > :01:09.emblem. And the bizarre story of the Queen

:01:09. > :01:19.and her golden winkles, how Her Majesty became an honorary member

:01:19. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:25.Good evening. The devastated family of a Sussex businessman who was

:01:25. > :01:29.crushed to death during a burglary have said they will never be

:01:29. > :01:34.released from their sorrow. Julian Gardner's elderly mother today said

:01:34. > :01:37.the guilty verdicts were the only justifiable result. The 52-year-old

:01:37. > :01:42.was killed after he interrupted the gang of professional burglars

:01:42. > :01:47.ransacking property at his farm in Robertsbridge in October 2010. Four

:01:47. > :01:56.of the men were today jailed for 36 years for manslaughter. Alex Beard

:01:56. > :02:00.was in Lewes Crown Court to hear the sentences being handed down.

:02:00. > :02:04.We promise you this was a General Accident. No one was meant to get

:02:04. > :02:09.hurt, that is what happens when you come to be a hairier. A repentant

:02:09. > :02:13.and still protesting their innocence. I am innocent, I have

:02:13. > :02:17.maintained it all the way through because I am innocent. Today seven

:02:17. > :02:22.then what I sentenced for their part in a botched robbery that left

:02:22. > :02:28.52 Old Julian Gardner dead. His 92 year-old mother was in court to

:02:28. > :02:31.hear their sentences passed. Julian was above all a decent man

:02:31. > :02:38.who worked hard all his life. Full before he had the opportunity to

:02:38. > :02:42.sit back and enjoy the results of a lifetime's work, those now

:02:42. > :02:47.convicted feel they had the right to steal all that Julian had worked

:02:47. > :02:49.for, but succeeded only in robbing him of his life. The judge told

:02:49. > :02:56.Brothers' Marcus and Terrance Bristow they had been the prime

:02:56. > :03:00.movers in the burglary in 2010. There were both jailed for 11 years

:03:00. > :03:04.for manslaughter, conspiracy to burgle and pervert the course of

:03:04. > :03:08.Jack this -- justice. Lee Delay and Paul Dunn were sentenced for seven

:03:08. > :03:14.years each. Christopher Leek and Oliver Payne were sentenced to 4.5

:03:14. > :03:18.years and three years respectively. Once the gang fled the scene, they

:03:18. > :03:22.made their way to Terrence Dunn's House, who was sentenced to 18

:03:22. > :03:29.months in prison to conspiracy to pervert the Court of Justice. Back

:03:29. > :03:34.in the village where Mr Gardner lived, there was mixed reaction.

:03:34. > :03:39.is awful. I think the whole system is crazy. It is completely

:03:39. > :03:44.inappropriate for the crime that has been achieved. -- committed.

:03:44. > :03:49.am pleased that it has just gone to a conclusion. He has gone forever,

:03:49. > :03:53.he was sit -- it is six. He was just a friendly man. During

:03:53. > :03:57.sentencing, the judge said a decent, honourable, hard-working family man

:03:57. > :04:07.was killed in a ghastly Manor, doing nothing more than trying to

:04:07. > :04:10.protect his property. The then sentence the seven men to prison.

:04:10. > :04:18.Julian Gardner's family say they will never be released on their

:04:18. > :04:21.sorrow. A three-year-old boy from

:04:21. > :04:25.Gillingham has made medical history after being kept alive for 251 days

:04:25. > :04:28.by an artificial heart, longer than any other child in the country. Joe

:04:28. > :04:31.Skerratt was attached to the machine the size of a small fridge

:04:31. > :04:36.for nine months, while a donor heart was found for him. He's now

:04:36. > :04:43.been allowed home to Medway, as Simon Jones reports.

:04:43. > :04:48.He is a picture of health now, but Joe Skerratt was born with her rare

:04:48. > :04:52.condition that left him with an abnormally large heart. The had to

:04:52. > :04:56.be hats to -- he had to be hooked up to an artificial heart for a

:04:56. > :05:01.record amount of time. He is an amazing chap, he is an amazing

:05:01. > :05:05.character, he never moaned or complained. He was really good and

:05:05. > :05:12.the Berlin heart became an extension of him and he'd got part

:05:12. > :05:16.of it. And without it? We would we would not have him. This is the

:05:16. > :05:20.device that helped him stay alive. Tubes are planted into the main

:05:20. > :05:26.pumping chambers of the heart, which drain blood from one section

:05:26. > :05:33.of the hot and pumps it back into the other. Joe needed to of the

:05:33. > :05:37.devices that beat once a second or 251 days. He did not let it affect

:05:37. > :05:42.him, he just got on with what he wanted to do. Eventually, a

:05:42. > :05:49.transplant was found and Joe knows he has now got a heart or what is

:05:49. > :05:56.just the right size. I have got a new heart now! I have got a little

:05:56. > :06:02.one. A little one? I used to have a big one, now it is a little one.

:06:02. > :06:07.Joe's parents are urging people next time they are at the doctors

:06:07. > :06:11.or online to sign up to the organ Donor Register. There ours

:06:11. > :06:16.currently 7579 people waiting for transplants. To any family that has

:06:16. > :06:23.donated organs, it is the most wonderful thing you can possibly

:06:23. > :06:33.have done, to give an -- give another child a chance. A chance

:06:33. > :06:33.

:06:33. > :06:37.Joe is grasping? How is your new heart? New heart is great!

:06:37. > :06:41.Simon joins us from the Medway towns now. What did the doctors say

:06:41. > :06:45.about how he is progressing? Based say they are really delighted with

:06:45. > :06:50.the progress he is making. They have got to know him very well

:06:50. > :06:53.because he spent almost 200 days in hospital in his short life. His

:06:53. > :06:58.consultant says he was very lucky to get a heart transplant, there is

:06:58. > :07:02.a real shortage of organ donors, particularly for children. Many die

:07:02. > :07:09.while they are still on the waiting list. His parents told me that when

:07:09. > :07:13.he got home, he used to beat -- he used to have a grey complexion, but

:07:13. > :07:18.now he is much more rosy. Now he feels a lot warmer as well. When he

:07:18. > :07:25.got Frome -- home, the first thing he wanted was Peter, so I think the

:07:25. > :07:35.recovery is going well! -- pizza. The crushing blow for the Kent

:07:35. > :07:37.

:07:37. > :07:40.Whineray, with 1300 bottles of red wine the EU says it cannot sell.

:07:40. > :07:43.A Sussex company has developed a pioneering car seat that cocoons a

:07:43. > :07:46.baby in a protective shell if it's involved in an accident. The

:07:46. > :07:48.Carkoon, as it's known, also protects against fire and flying

:07:48. > :07:51.debris and could be available next year. Its creator, Julian Preston

:07:51. > :07:55.Powers from Brighton, also came up with a motorcycle helmet that cools

:07:55. > :07:58.on impact, acting as an icepack to reduce swelling to the brain after

:07:58. > :08:08.a crash. Ellie Price has been finding out more about his latest

:08:08. > :08:09.

:08:09. > :08:13.invention. Last year, there were more than

:08:14. > :08:18.5600 crashes on the roads of Kent and East Sussex. Nearly 900 people

:08:18. > :08:20.were killed or seriously injured. Even wearing a seatbelt, they are

:08:20. > :08:26.chilling as figures for any driver, especially those with young

:08:26. > :08:29.children. Airbag technology has protected adult in car crashes for

:08:29. > :08:34.a long time, but has not afforded children any form of protection

:08:34. > :08:38.whatsoever. Even if a young child is strapped into a forward-facing

:08:38. > :08:43.car crash -- car seat, it is still at risk of serious injuries come as

:08:43. > :08:51.well as being hit by object within the car. In all car accidents,

:08:51. > :08:54.anything in the car moves at the same speed as the car when it is

:08:54. > :08:58.impacted. So an umbrella or bottle of water can come forward and kill

:08:58. > :09:04.a child. We have created a device which completely in sconces the

:09:04. > :09:11.child in a fireproof bubble on impact, which prevents objects on

:09:11. > :09:20.impact and the child's head or body. Did apply -- the device a ploys --

:09:20. > :09:23.deploys in less than a 10th of a second on impact. The seat is also

:09:23. > :09:26.fitted with a system that alerts the emergency services if the

:09:26. > :09:33.shield has been deployed. And automatically gives them the

:09:33. > :09:40.location of where it happens. But at 500, it is not cheap. You will

:09:40. > :09:47.already spend around 200 on a basic seat. 150 for the first

:09:47. > :09:51.stage seat. Hello! No, I would definitely pay that money. Quite

:09:51. > :09:56.painful in the Times at the moment, so probably not at this stage.

:09:56. > :10:01.were recently involved, my wife and I, in a crash, and we believe the

:10:01. > :10:05.airbag saved our lives. If I could afford it, I would invest in one.

:10:05. > :10:12.They will have to wait. The seat will not be on the market until

:10:12. > :10:16.next year. The invention was inspired by the

:10:16. > :10:20.local community there in Brighton? That's right, the inventor Julian

:10:20. > :10:24.Preston Powers told me the idea came from a Sussex fire fighter who

:10:24. > :10:27.approached him and asked him to develop a car seat that could be

:10:28. > :10:32.released quickly from a car in the event of a crash. The idea grew

:10:32. > :10:37.from there. It has gone global. While we were there, Julian recede

:10:37. > :10:41.into the requests from around the world. As we were leaving, --

:10:41. > :10:45.received interview requests. As we were leading, an Australian crew

:10:45. > :10:48.arrived to film them. Hundreds of British Airways workers

:10:48. > :10:51.at Gatwick Airport are to lose their jobs or be transferred to

:10:51. > :10:54.another company under cost-saving plans announced today. 400 staff,

:10:54. > :10:57.including baggage handlers, will see their jobs contracted to an

:10:57. > :11:06.outside company. 170 customer service staff and management

:11:06. > :11:10.support workers are likely to lose their jobs. British Airways says it

:11:10. > :11:14.is trying to become more competitive. The Unite union is

:11:14. > :11:23.calling for no compulsory redundancies, we hope to bring you

:11:23. > :11:27.more on this later in the pro Brett Byrd programme.

:11:27. > :11:30.A man from Kent who's wanted in Portugal for a crime he was cleared

:11:30. > :11:33.of 17 years ago has been told his retrial will take place later this

:11:33. > :11:36.month. Graham Mitchell, who's 49 and from Canterbury, was acquitted

:11:36. > :11:38.in 1995, along with another Briton, of attempting to murder a German

:11:38. > :11:41.tourist in the Algarve. The decision was overturned a year

:11:41. > :11:44.later. The re-trial is set for April 23rd in Portugal and could

:11:44. > :11:47.take place without Mr Mitchell being present.

:11:47. > :11:50.Fans may be shut out of Gillingham FCs game against Swindon Town later

:11:50. > :11:53.this month because of a dispute between the club and Kent Police.

:11:53. > :11:56.Police say the club must pay for officers needed inside the stadium

:11:56. > :12:00.but so far Gillingham have refused to agree the level of security

:12:00. > :12:09.needed. In the meantime the council has taken the decision to ban fans

:12:09. > :12:12.on safety grounds. The historically low interest rates

:12:12. > :12:14.have been great for people with loans and mortgages, but a real

:12:14. > :12:17.headache for those relying on interest from savings to stay

:12:17. > :12:20.afloat. One way some people are trying to improve matters is by

:12:20. > :12:24.pooling their cash with others in an investment club. Each member

:12:24. > :12:26.pays a monthly fee of around 25 and the group then decides how to

:12:26. > :12:29.invest the funds in stocks and shares. There are already an

:12:29. > :12:33.estimated 12,000 clubs in the UK with around 100,000 people members

:12:33. > :12:36.chipping in. And for 60% of them, its their first time dabbling in

:12:36. > :12:39.the stock market. For tonight's special report, our business

:12:39. > :12:49.correspondent Mark Norman has been to see how it works with a club in

:12:49. > :12:51.

:12:51. > :12:57.Forest Row in East Sussex. All those in favour of buying

:12:57. > :13:01.2,000 worth of Bovis? 3, 4, 5, that is a majority. It is 8pm in

:13:01. > :13:04.the evening, we are in a small room next to the bar in a local hotel.

:13:04. > :13:11.The members of this club are reviewing their investment

:13:11. > :13:16.decisions. We bought Domino Printing, and we sold part of Royal

:13:16. > :13:21.Dutch Shell, Rolls-Royce, Wrexham and this was to lock in profits

:13:21. > :13:28.that we had made if we remember. There are some rules, and limit of

:13:28. > :13:31.20 members, accounting systems, and dealing through a broker. We deal

:13:32. > :13:38.through a firm of stockbrokers. Everyone contributes as much as

:13:38. > :13:43.they can, or would like to. The point is to try and make a bit of

:13:43. > :13:47.money, and enjoy ourselves in the process. Surely it would be better

:13:47. > :13:52.to have shares than cash? This group has been investing for some

:13:52. > :13:56.years, members come and go. Some are amateurs, some experienced and

:13:56. > :14:00.some have learned how to use -- learned how to use the computer

:14:00. > :14:07.software. Things like I said, life insurance, they have been a mystery

:14:07. > :14:11.to me. This was a way of trying to find out how it worked. Since the

:14:12. > :14:15.age of 15, I have been interested in the stock market. It was my

:14:15. > :14:22.business and hobby. I am fascinated the charts and figures and things

:14:22. > :14:26.like that. So that is how I do it. Even the experts become members,

:14:26. > :14:29.but advise a little caution. have got to be careful with this,

:14:29. > :14:33.but stocks and shares are only one part of your investments overall.

:14:33. > :14:37.It is not the solution, but it is a method of education and learning

:14:37. > :14:41.about it. With more than 100,000 members, these clubs offer some

:14:41. > :14:45.hope to people who have to live off their savings in times when

:14:45. > :14:54.interest rates are at record lows. Is that enough money to spend four

:14:54. > :14:57.one-day? This is our top story tonight. The

:14:57. > :14:59.family of a Sussex businessman crushed to death during a burglary

:14:59. > :15:02.say they will never be released from their sorrow. Julian Gardner

:15:02. > :15:05.was killed after he tried to stop the gang of professional burglars

:15:05. > :15:09.ransacking property at his farm in Robertsbridge in October 2010. Four

:15:09. > :15:11.of the men were today jailed for a total of 36 years for his

:15:11. > :15:14.manslaughter. Also in tonight's programme. Five

:15:14. > :15:17.games to save the season, Steve Coppell sets out his stall as he

:15:17. > :15:20.takes on the big job at Crawley Town.

:15:20. > :15:30.And the Queen's golden winkles, how Her Majesty has been honoured by

:15:30. > :15:37.

:15:37. > :15:40.A year ago, A Kentish wine producer imported two tonnes of grapes from

:15:40. > :15:43.Argentina to make top quality red wine. Now the 1,300 bottles of red

:15:43. > :15:48.are finally ready, and Chapel Down Winery in Tenterden are having to

:15:48. > :15:51.give them away. The wine has been made using Argentinian Grapes to

:15:51. > :15:53.celebrate World Malbec Day. But because the Malbec grapes have been

:15:54. > :15:57.flown in from South America, European legislation means they

:15:57. > :16:07.aren't allowed to sell it. Our environment correspondent Yvette

:16:07. > :16:08.

:16:08. > :16:13.Austin has our story update. The finished product. A rich and

:16:14. > :16:19.fruity English red, the first of its kind. 12 months ago, two tons

:16:19. > :16:22.of Malbec grapes arrived at the Chapel Down Winery from Argentina.

:16:22. > :16:27.It was an experiment. Just to make something that no one has ever made

:16:27. > :16:31.before. It is a great opportunity, being able to meet the winemakers

:16:31. > :16:41.and learn the techniques and practise it myself was too old --

:16:41. > :16:49.was a real pleasure. Malbec grapes can only really dry -- broke in

:16:49. > :16:56.France and Argentina, and these techniques were used in England. It

:16:56. > :17:03.has made 1300 bottles, but it cannot be called a wine, and cannot

:17:03. > :17:11.be sold. Bath is one of the words are reduced to -- daft is one of

:17:11. > :17:18.the words are reduced to describe it, Malbec wine is not allowed to

:17:18. > :17:21.be called a wind, it is eight alcoholic beverage. We cannot call

:17:21. > :17:26.it Malbec because we are not allowed to bring it into the

:17:26. > :17:30.country technically. It is because the grapes have come from outside

:17:30. > :17:37.the EU that European law states that the Grid cannot officially be

:17:37. > :17:47.a wine, and it is illegal to sell it. So the bottle's worth about 15

:17:47. > :17:50.

:17:50. > :17:52.Five games to save the season, the words today of Crawley town's new

:17:52. > :17:54.Director of Football Steve Coppell. The former England International

:17:54. > :17:58.and Manchester United player has been brought in following the

:17:58. > :18:01.departure of manager Steve Evans. The caretaker manager Craig

:18:01. > :18:04.Brewster remains in charge of the team and Crawley fans have been

:18:04. > :18:13.left wondering if the Red Devils win that third automatic promotion

:18:13. > :18:17.place. Ian Palmer reports. He played at the highest level and

:18:17. > :18:20.to sports fans, needs no introduction, so it comes as a

:18:20. > :18:25.surprise to hear Steve Coppell approached League Two Crawley Town,

:18:25. > :18:29.not the other way round. I do not leave -- live far away, I know the

:18:29. > :18:34.club and the people. I do not really know the team, and they did

:18:34. > :18:38.not know Crayke, but I thought in the circumstances, I could be of

:18:38. > :18:44.some assistance. That is why I called, and that is why ultimately

:18:44. > :18:48.I have ended up here. Steve Evans used his bounce and unique style of

:18:48. > :18:51.football management in Crawley for five years, now he is gone and with

:18:51. > :18:55.the club's 4th in the table the priority is promotion. Any team

:18:55. > :18:58.when the new manager comes in, it is known that they at their game

:18:58. > :19:03.and perform better. They need to impress the new people.

:19:03. > :19:07.In the past, Steve Coppell has managed Crystal Palace and Brighton.

:19:07. > :19:11.He stopped playing at 28 following injury. He says that is why he

:19:11. > :19:15.can't get the game out of his system. I wanted that itch to be

:19:15. > :19:19.scratched, and here I am, 30 years later, still looking to scratch it.

:19:19. > :19:23.One I started playing, the goalkeeper could pick it up and

:19:23. > :19:29.have a walk around his box and ticket whenever he wanted to. The

:19:29. > :19:36.physical demands on the players are demand -- enormous, television has

:19:36. > :19:39.become a massive factor, the media. In years gone by, it was just much

:19:39. > :19:45.of the day and that is it, now it is wall to wall. Crawley hosts

:19:45. > :19:49.Wimbledon on Saturday. The caretaker manager Craig Brewster

:19:49. > :19:53.remains in charge. Will there be a Steve Coppell effect? We will find

:19:53. > :19:57.out in five games. Here are a couple of facts to store
