:00:00. > :00:00.from the BBC News at Six. So it's goodbye from me, and on BBC One,

:00:07. > :00:09.Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith.

:00:10. > :00:12.And I'm Bryony MacKenzie. Tonight's top stories:

:00:13. > :00:16.Promised a new life but forced to live in squalor. Police make

:00:17. > :00:20.arrests in a widespread investigation into human

:00:21. > :00:24.trafficking. What she did mainly was slapping me. Sometimes she

:00:25. > :00:29.would beat me with spoons. If We were let down. The father of

:00:30. > :00:30.Lucie Blackman speaks out following an inquest, 13 years after she was

:00:31. > :00:32.murdered. Also in tonight's programme:

:00:33. > :00:36.Institutionalised abuse. Neglect leading to five deaths. A coroner

:00:37. > :00:41.says those involved at the orchid View Care Home should be ashamed.

:00:42. > :00:45.We'll get the latest details and reaction live from the court.

:00:46. > :00:49.Think you know Brighton? Look again. The challenge of a photographer who

:00:50. > :00:57.has taken a picture every day for a year.

:00:58. > :00:58.Everything from high art to low farce, as Canterbury celebrates its

:00:59. > :01:15.unique festival. Good evening.

:01:16. > :01:18.They were promised a new life in the UK, legitimate work and a safe

:01:19. > :01:20.environment for their families but today police in Sussex have been

:01:21. > :01:26.tackling suspected cases of human exploitation in the county. An

:01:27. > :01:32.Eastern European couple was arrested and police searched dozens

:01:33. > :01:34.of properties. In one house three children, their mother and her

:01:35. > :01:38.sister were found living in a single room. Today, to coincide

:01:39. > :01:40.with Anti`slavery Day, the Home Secretary announced that the

:01:41. > :01:45.maximum jail sentence for people traffickers has been increased to

:01:46. > :01:47.life. Police and charities in Kent have also been holding events to

:01:48. > :01:56.highlight what is a growing problem, as Sara Smith reports.

:01:57. > :02:00.A from property to property, police in Hastings have been acting on

:02:01. > :02:05.intelligence to search for victims of trafficking. This is a safe

:02:06. > :02:09.house where those who get rescued can receive support, such as this

:02:10. > :02:16.woman, abused by her uncle in Uganda she fled to England. She

:02:17. > :02:20.soon fell prey once here to sexual exploitation. I got there and they

:02:21. > :02:26.welcomed me. I thought everything was OK.

:02:27. > :02:32.Hastings is no other words the `` is no worse than other towns in the

:02:33. > :02:36.south`east are everywhere the number of traffic people are

:02:37. > :02:40.growing. They have been operations in Brighton and Hove focusing on

:02:41. > :02:44.those who may be targeted as forced labour and at Gatwick flights from

:02:45. > :02:48.trafficking hot spots are being monitored. In Kent organisations

:02:49. > :02:52.have joined forces today to raise awareness of the growing numbers of

:02:53. > :02:56.people who a traffic tear. They come to the UK expecting to find a

:02:57. > :03:01.better life with better conditions, regular work and a decent place to

:03:02. > :03:04.live. Sometimes they find themselves in overcrowded

:03:05. > :03:10.accommodation with people who control their documents, their bank

:03:11. > :03:14.accounts and their movement is restricted as well. This film is

:03:15. > :03:19.one of several to be screened around the country, commissioned by

:03:20. > :03:24.the charity and chosen, they tell the real stories of people who end

:03:25. > :03:28.up working as modern`day slaves. People like this woman, just 21,

:03:29. > :03:33.hoping to raise funds to pay for teacher training, she took a

:03:34. > :03:37.domestic job offered by a fellow person from Tanzania. Everything

:03:38. > :03:41.was fine at the beginning but the more the days went by she changed

:03:42. > :03:47.in the way she was doing her things. What she did mainly was slapping me,

:03:48. > :03:52.sometimes with cooking spoons, beating me. As well as the abuse

:03:53. > :03:57.she was not paid a penny. Rescued by police and helped by a charity

:03:58. > :04:03.she is continuing her education. For too many others, the

:04:04. > :04:07.exploitation continues. The majority of people who are

:04:08. > :04:12.trafficked into the county come through Dover. This is seen as a

:04:13. > :04:17.very growing problem, isn't it? Yes, the figures suggested is going up

:04:18. > :04:21.25% every year. 20 million people come through Dover every year so it

:04:22. > :04:25.is expected that a good proportion of those who are trafficked come

:04:26. > :04:28.through here because it would not be obvious because they are happy

:04:29. > :04:32.and they expect a new life but when they get here for the job they

:04:33. > :04:34.think are lined up for them, the traffickers do not pay them until

:04:35. > :04:39.they are desperate enough that they will work for any amount of money

:04:40. > :04:43.and they will work any amount of hours and the police and charities

:04:44. > :04:47.have warned today that is not just people from overseas to suffer

:04:48. > :04:51.these conditions, it can Apple `` they can happen to vulnerable

:04:52. > :04:53.British people as well. 13 years after Sevenoaks woman

:04:54. > :04:56.Lucie Blackman was murdered in Japan, her father has told an

:04:57. > :04:59.inquest they were let down by the country's legal system. Lucie was

:05:00. > :05:03.21 when she disappeared in Tokyo in 2000. Although a man was convicted

:05:04. > :05:07.of abduction and concealing her body, he was not found guilty of

:05:08. > :05:09.her murder. Yesterday a British coroner apologised for not being

:05:10. > :05:12.able to give the family answers about how she died, before

:05:13. > :05:21.recording an open verdict at her inquest, held 13 years after her

:05:22. > :05:25.death. Ellie Price reports. Lucie Blackman had lived in Tokyo

:05:26. > :05:30.for less than two months when she was abducted and murdered. 13 years

:05:31. > :05:35.on her family do not know how she died and an inquest backing the UK

:05:36. > :05:40.has brought them no closer to the truth. The coroner apologise a

:05:41. > :05:44.number of times to us but I think it was really from the humanity

:05:45. > :05:49.point of view there he was the last stage in what has been a very long

:05:50. > :05:54.protracted stage not of his making. It is disappointing really that

:05:55. > :05:59.there is no redress to look into the investigation and the way it

:06:00. > :06:03.was handled in Japan and in particular the shortcomings of the

:06:04. > :06:08.judicial system which I think has really left a short. Lucie Blackman

:06:09. > :06:13.vanished in July 2000 after telling a friend she was going out for the

:06:14. > :06:17.afternoon with a man. Body parts were found in a cave in February

:06:18. > :06:23.2001 that were later discovered to be hers. In 2008 A man was

:06:24. > :06:26.convicted of abducting her and dismembering and concealing her

:06:27. > :06:30.body. The judge said there was insufficient evidence to convict

:06:31. > :06:35.him of her rape and murder. Because there was no conclusive cause of

:06:36. > :06:40.death the coroner could only records an open verdict. You cannot

:06:41. > :06:43.call witnesses from abroad or get co`operation from the local police

:06:44. > :06:46.to find out what happened. If the local police there cannot find out

:06:47. > :06:51.how a person died it is very unlikely that the coroner here with

:06:52. > :06:56.limited powers will do any better. It has been bittersweet rear the

:06:57. > :07:01.that it is underlying some of the shortcomings all of the way through.

:07:02. > :07:05.The inquest draws the legal process to an end but her father says it

:07:06. > :07:08.brings him no closure. In a moment:

:07:09. > :07:19.The controversial proposal to move a Canterbury grammar school eight

:07:20. > :07:22.miles away to Herne Bay. A coroner today ruled that neglect

:07:23. > :07:26.did contribute to the deaths of five elderly people at a Sussex

:07:27. > :07:29.care home. In a damning verdict West Sussex coroner said there was

:07:30. > :07:32.institutionalised abuse at Orchid View in Copthorne, and that those

:07:33. > :07:37.involved in the neglect should be ashamed. A serious case review to

:07:38. > :07:43.investigate the failings has now been launched. Rebecca Williams has

:07:44. > :07:46.been following the hearing and is at the court now. The families have

:07:47. > :07:57.heard shocking evidence during this inquest?

:07:58. > :08:01.Yes in the last five weeks we have heard how medication was often

:08:02. > :08:06.given incorrectly and one night shift at Orchid View, there were 28

:08:07. > :08:11.errors recorded on patient charts. One elderly man was left on his own

:08:12. > :08:15.and he was found in bed with faeces on his hands. When one woman was

:08:16. > :08:25.taken to hospital the coroner said that the medical documentation

:08:26. > :08:28.handed over by the home had been falsified. Neglected and mistreated.

:08:29. > :08:32.In less than two years five residents died as a result of the

:08:33. > :08:37.care they received at Orchid View. I was repeatedly asking for help to

:08:38. > :08:42.sort out those problems and it just never appeared. She was left to

:08:43. > :08:44.suffer basically. Some roads is believe that had there been better

:08:45. > :08:50.care of their loved ones might still be here today. When they read

:08:51. > :08:56.out when death after another, it seems amazing that anyone came out

:08:57. > :09:01.of their home alive. The home has now reopened with a different name,

:09:02. > :09:06.under new management. It was here that a pattern of neglect unfolded.

:09:07. > :09:10.The inquest heard how it was understaffed and how some employees

:09:11. > :09:14.worked here without CRB checks. Residents were regularly given the

:09:15. > :09:18.wrong medication. Often they could not reach their bells and they were

:09:19. > :09:24.left alone for hours, sometimes with soiled hands. This woman

:09:25. > :09:28.endured the treatment until her death in 2010. She died of a blood

:09:29. > :09:35.clot to the brain. The court heard she had been given three times a

:09:36. > :09:37.prescribed medication on several occasions.

:09:38. > :09:40.We did see a huge change in that six month period from really

:09:41. > :09:47.thinking she was in there for a short time to just seeing her waist

:09:48. > :09:51.away physically and mentally. One of the social workers from the

:09:52. > :09:57.local authority, when she did a visit, she found my mum in her room,

:09:58. > :10:02.in her bed naked cold and crying. The inquest heard that some

:10:03. > :10:06.employees were working at Orchid View without the CRB checks and one

:10:07. > :10:11.of the nurses was jailed last year for sexually assaulting a young boy.

:10:12. > :10:16.It was the home administrator that contacted the police about what she

:10:17. > :10:22.had witnessed at the home. I saw someone lying on a mattress eating

:10:23. > :10:28.his food off the floor like a dog. It was heartbreaking. De you have

:10:29. > :10:39.any regrets about coming forward? None at all. I am relieved I did

:10:40. > :10:44.the right thing. I had no choice. Orchid View was run by Southern

:10:45. > :10:49.Cross which made headlines in 2011 when the company was forced to

:10:50. > :10:53.close. That year the Care Quality Commission found that 40% of the

:10:54. > :10:57.Southern Cross Cook owns it had inspected were failing to meet

:10:58. > :11:00.essential standards. Damning report raised a number of concerns and

:11:01. > :11:05.suggested the home was understaffed and care plans were not amp up to

:11:06. > :11:09.date. They found residents were at serious risk of neglect with one

:11:10. > :11:13.person not receiving the correct pain medication over a period of

:11:14. > :11:13.ication over a period of I weeks. weeks. It is extraordinary that in

:11:14. > :16:41.They boast there is something for everyone, from classical music to a

:16:42. > :16:44.disco for toddlers. Among the star names performing this year are

:16:45. > :16:46.opera singer Lesley Garrett and comedian Adam Hills.

:16:47. > :16:51.The festival attracts around 70,000 people every year. Over the next

:16:52. > :16:54.two weeks, 229 acts will be performing at 14 venues across the

:16:55. > :17:00.City, including at the Marlowe theatre and Canterbury Cathedral.

:17:01. > :17:06.Robin Gibson is in Canterbury now. Robin, what can we expect from this

:17:07. > :17:12.year's event? Well, in a word, locks! Some

:17:13. > :17:14.highbrow and some not so high brow. Tens of thousands of flocking to

:17:15. > :17:19.Canterbury for this event are just as they did last year. They are

:17:20. > :17:23.hoping to be the number of 70,000 this year. It is a blend of comedy,

:17:24. > :17:28.art and music. There are things orchids and families. They wanted

:17:29. > :17:30.to go well this year because the design them that `` it is an

:17:31. > :17:42.anniversary year. The festival is one of the biggest

:17:43. > :17:48.events in the south`east, reaching out to every age, every culture,

:17:49. > :17:52.every taste. That is a big ask, crossing the divide between farm

:17:53. > :17:57.and laughs and the more challenging side of the arts. We are a group of

:17:58. > :18:00.buskers to all met on the High Street in Canterbury and we decided

:18:01. > :18:05.to form a band and we have been playing ever since, touring the

:18:06. > :18:10.country and generally having fun. I am an Australian, can you imagine

:18:11. > :18:17.an Australian died name his kids the way he hopes they will grow up.

:18:18. > :18:19.This is my son a top bloke. Adam Hills and Lesley Garrett are some

:18:20. > :18:33.of the top names. This is something completely new

:18:34. > :18:38.for this year. This tent is a crossover between a circus arena, a

:18:39. > :18:41.dance hall and a burlesque night club from the 1920s. They

:18:42. > :18:45.originated in Germany and Holland and Belgium and they travelled from

:18:46. > :18:52.town to town and add entertainment, very burlesque, very cabarets style.

:18:53. > :18:55.There are 15 pieces by his sculpture. It represents a life in

:18:56. > :19:00.art that included working with Henry Moore and other greats. It is

:19:01. > :19:11.in the Cathedral Chapter House, his own Canterbury journey. My story is

:19:12. > :19:14.there. It is very rich and it is there to be discovered and there

:19:15. > :19:16.has been my life and I am incredibly grateful as I get

:19:17. > :19:19.towards the end of my life to see that this is what I should have

:19:20. > :19:22.done and I have done. With events spread throughout the country they

:19:23. > :19:28.hope it will be a fortnight of exotic arts experiences, with

:19:29. > :19:35.plenty of Arts atmosphere `` party atmosphere thrown in for good

:19:36. > :19:41.measure! They have invited me to their show

:19:42. > :19:45.he in two weeks' time. Tickets are selling like hot cakes but there is

:19:46. > :19:50.still plenty to thing and there will be free events set against

:19:51. > :19:51.this magnificent cathedral city backdrop.

:19:52. > :19:58.It looks wonderful. Thank you.

:19:59. > :20:03.For the last year a Brighton man has gone out every single day and

:20:04. > :20:07.taken a photograph. His aim, to ignore the usual images of the city,

:20:08. > :20:10.the pier, the beach, the pavilion, and capture what's actually going

:20:11. > :20:13.on. Now Vince Matthews hopes to have his collection of images made

:20:14. > :20:16.into a book celebrating the subculture of a place he says is

:20:17. > :20:19.great, but too often taken for granted. Alex Beard has been to

:20:20. > :20:36.meet him. Every day life, captured every day

:20:37. > :20:42.for a year. A photographic project dedicated to Brighton. It is the

:20:43. > :20:46.home of the weird, wacky and wonderful but you keep seeing the

:20:47. > :20:52.same pictures. The beer, a bird on a promenade rail, beach huts, but

:20:53. > :20:54.there is so much more. I cycle the everyday added the all these

:20:55. > :20:59.different things and I realised it wasn't being recorded or shown so I

:21:00. > :21:03.brought my camera and photographed the city for a year. He set about

:21:04. > :21:08.recording the little details that might otherwise have been forgotten,

:21:09. > :21:12.double parking at the Green Party conference, images of the more

:21:13. > :21:16.transient elements of the city. This whole corner, there is

:21:17. > :21:19.graffiti which changes constantly and there have been some great

:21:20. > :21:23.pieces that have gone up here by a really good artists so I always

:21:24. > :21:28.come and check this corner. I have had five or six different photos

:21:29. > :21:32.from here. Sometimes he takes as many as 100 photos a day, the

:21:33. > :21:36.project has become a way of life, but at sea than an obsession. In

:21:37. > :21:39.has been a routine, every day make sure the batteries are charged on

:21:40. > :21:44.the right chippers and the camera. I have to grab an image. Sometimes

:21:45. > :21:50.the image when you catch it be shut for the first time that day and you

:21:51. > :21:54.know you have something in the can. Sometimes I have to seek out and

:21:55. > :22:00.keep my eye in. He does admit he will not risk braving the rain and

:22:01. > :22:04.snow to `` Miss braving the rain and snow to fill his quota!

:22:05. > :22:08.Alex joins us live from Brighton now. Over 10,000 images, what is he

:22:09. > :22:12.going to do with them all? He has been up loading them every day in

:22:13. > :22:16.the past year but now he wants to make them into a book so he can

:22:17. > :22:21.donate it back to the city but that is going to be a very big book!

:22:22. > :22:25.Tomorrow is the last day of his project. He says he does not know

:22:26. > :22:29.what he will shoot but it will be Brighton, obviously, but he says

:22:30. > :22:34.the very last voter will have them on the other side of the voter and

:22:35. > :22:40.`` camera for the other side `` it will have him on the other side of

:22:41. > :22:42.the camera for the first time in a year.

:22:43. > :22:45.A motorcyclist from Kent will be hoping to make history at his home

:22:46. > :22:47.circuit this weekend as the British Superbike championship reaches its

:22:48. > :22:50.climax. Shane "Shakey" Byrne from Sittingbourne is aiming to become

:22:51. > :22:53.the first rider ever to win the title four times.

:22:54. > :22:56.The final races of the season take place at Brands Hatch, with just a

:22:57. > :23:02.single point separating Byrne from his closest rival. Neil Bell

:23:03. > :23:07.reports. For British bike fans it could not

:23:08. > :23:09.get much better than this. After eight months of ferocious

:23:10. > :23:13.competition the outcome of the superbikes championship will depend

:23:14. > :23:17.on three races this weekend at Brands Hatch. Local hero and three`

:23:18. > :23:23.times champion Shane Byrne is ahead of his rival by the narrowest of

:23:24. > :23:27.margins. This year is a big deal. I have won three titles but if I win

:23:28. > :23:31.for on Sunday then I am not only the most successful rider in terms

:23:32. > :23:37.of race wins in the championship's history but I am the only rider to

:23:38. > :23:40.ever have won four championships. I would say there is a pretty chance

:23:41. > :23:44.I will be nursing a hefty hangover on Monday of a win! To beat the

:23:45. > :23:50.reigning champion in his own back yard will be a formidable

:23:51. > :23:52.achievement. It is all to play for. Whoever scores the most points this

:23:53. > :23:56.week and will be champion and that is what it comes down to. I am

:23:57. > :24:00.looking forward to it and I feel pretty good and I think the weather

:24:01. > :24:05.will play a big part as well. There will be huge crowds at the Kent

:24:06. > :24:11.circuit with divided loyalties. Probably Shakey Byrne I imagine. He

:24:12. > :24:16.is always good here. Alex Lowe's I think, I would like it to be. It is

:24:17. > :24:25.going to be so tight. I would stick my money on Shakey Byrne. It shame

:24:26. > :24:33.there and is here on Sunday he will have made history. `` it Shane

:24:34. > :24:36.Byrne is here on Sunday he will have made history.

:24:37. > :24:38.Football, and Peter Taylor takes charge of Gillingham for the first

:24:39. > :24:42.time tomorrow. The 60`year`old who, 13 years ago, led the club to

:24:43. > :24:46.promotion to the second tier for the first time in their history,

:24:47. > :24:48.will be in charge of the side as interim manager for Saturday's home

:24:49. > :24:53.game against Preston. I had a very good year hair and people know that.

:24:54. > :24:59.I thoroughly enjoyed it. It ended up as a very successful year which

:25:00. > :25:03.was nice. I am looking to try and achieve that again. That is what I

:25:04. > :25:08.would like to do and hopefully I will get will received on Saturday

:25:09. > :25:13.and hopefully, more importantly, the team will perform well.

:25:14. > :25:15.In the Championship, Charlton Athletic travel to Blackburn Rovers,

:25:16. > :25:19.and Brighton are also away at Yeovil. The players will wear black

:25:20. > :25:21.armbands in memory of Seagulls fan Lance Corporal James Brynin, who

:25:22. > :25:24.was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday. In League One, Crawley

:25:25. > :25:33.Town host Bradford City at the Broadfield Stadium.

:25:34. > :25:37.Now we all need to know about the weather. I wish I had a lot of

:25:38. > :25:41.sunshine on offer but it is a bit unsettled. There is good news. That

:25:42. > :25:45.is where we see the sunshine, it will be feeling pretty war.

:25:46. > :25:49.Temperatures above the seasonal average. Today it was not a bad

:25:50. > :25:52.picture. There was cloud around that the rain stayed to the north

:25:53. > :25:59.and west of us. We did see some outbreaks of rain but for the lucky

:26:00. > :26:07.few there was sunshine around. It is always the breezy picture with

:26:08. > :26:11.the winds from the south. Tonight there is a lot of cloud around and

:26:12. > :26:17.because we have those breezes be temperatures will hold up and stay

:26:18. > :26:22.in double figures. As we start the weekend, we will see some rain from

:26:23. > :26:25.the very first part of the morning. It will stay windy and the rain

:26:26. > :26:29.will clear out of the way during the first part of the afternoon.

:26:30. > :26:32.Behind it a brighter picture, improving from the West but in the

:26:33. > :26:37.middle part of Saturday the rain will be heavy for a time. It is

:26:38. > :26:41.quite breezy and feeling a bit muggy. Temperatures stay up to 16

:26:42. > :26:45.or 17 degrees. By the end of Saturday you might fear that a

:26:46. > :26:49.bright and if but also some showers around with plenty of cloud cover

:26:50. > :26:53.as well. On Sunday it stays mostly dry initially but we see further

:26:54. > :26:56.outbreaks of rain as we get towards storm. A very mild night.

:26:57. > :27:02.Temperatures stay in double figures and some places do not drop below

:27:03. > :27:05.14 or 15 degrees. Those are the kind of values we normally expect

:27:06. > :27:09.during the day at the time of year. On Sunday there will be heavy and

:27:10. > :27:13.thundery showers a ramp up brighter spells in between. It will stay

:27:14. > :27:18.pretty breezy with temperatures decent for the time of year. The

:27:19. > :27:22.unsettled picture stays with us into the new week as well I am

:27:23. > :27:27.afraid. Mostly dry overnight into Monday but it will quickly turn wet

:27:28. > :27:31.and windy. Just look at that. It will feel a good deal cooler. On

:27:32. > :27:34.Tuesday it stays unsettled. The weekend will feel warm where we see

:27:35. > :27:40.the sunshine. A glimmer of brine as there.

:27:41. > :27:43.I will be back at 10:25pm. Join me that the stop I will be back on

:27:44. > :27:47.Monday. Goodbye.
