:00:00. > :00:10.Welcome to South East Today. I'm Bryony MacKenzie. And I'm Rob Smith.

:00:11. > :00:14.Tonight's top stories: The safety of mothers and babies put at risk. The

:00:15. > :00:24.damning assessment of Kent's biggest maternity unit. I couldn't even go

:00:25. > :00:28.and see my baby because I had a wheelchair. We'll be reporting live

:00:29. > :00:29.from the Medway Maritime Hospital with the latest details and

:00:30. > :00:31.reaction. Patients as old as 81

:00:32. > :00:34.as old as 81 say I Pat sexually abused by their doctor. He

:00:35. > :00:49.Back on track. Damon Hill relives his Formula One days at a Kent Go

:00:50. > :00:56.Kart track in aid of the stars of the future.

:00:57. > :00:57.And a modern`day Belle of the Ball. The 15`year`old schoolgirl from Kent

:00:58. > :01:13.crowned World Hip Hop Champion. Good evening. A shortage of midwives

:01:14. > :01:19.and a lack of equipment are putting the safety of mothers and babies at

:01:20. > :01:24.risk at Kent's biggest maternity unit, a damning report has found.

:01:25. > :01:28.The latest findings at the Medway Maritime Hospital come after it was

:01:29. > :01:32.put into special measures in July following an investigation into high

:01:33. > :01:35.patient death rates. The Care Quality Commission says the hospital

:01:36. > :01:38.failed to meet any of the six standards it assessed and is calling

:01:39. > :01:51.for managers to take "urgent action".

:01:52. > :01:58.Baby Amber Lee was born at 7:30am. Even when I was in labour, there was

:01:59. > :02:03.no one with us. But inspectors have concerns about the care and

:02:04. > :02:07.treatment women have been receiving. Jennifer says she was failed by the

:02:08. > :02:14.Medway Maritime when her son was born prematurely. I felt shoved

:02:15. > :02:18.aside by the staff. I couldn't even see my baby because I needed a

:02:19. > :02:26.wheelchair. I didn't get a photo of my baby. Inspectors found emergency

:02:27. > :02:30.equipment was not checked appropriately, which potentially put

:02:31. > :02:36.mothers and babies at risk. Planning and delivery of care did not ensure

:02:37. > :02:40.the safety and welfare of women. There were not enough midwives to

:02:41. > :02:47.give effective care. Shelley says it was after she gave birth that

:02:48. > :02:52.problems began. I was put onto a ward where there were people who had

:02:53. > :02:58.not given birth yet, so not a lot of nurses around to help and come and

:02:59. > :03:07.check were OK. The hospital has been told to take urgent action. Midwives

:03:08. > :03:11.on duty are dedicated, hard`working and making sure they are responding

:03:12. > :03:14.to individual needs but there is the risk of harm is to individuals

:03:15. > :03:21.because there are not enough people around to support them. The hospital

:03:22. > :03:30.says it is in the process of appointing 25 new midwives. Is this

:03:31. > :03:40.hospital saved? Personally, it is. Even if... I judge that on the basis

:03:41. > :03:44.of working with our midwives. Generally speaking, it is safe. The

:03:45. > :03:47.hospital were now face further inspections.

:03:48. > :03:50.This is just the latest in a series of damning reports into failures at

:03:51. > :03:52.the Medway Maritime Hospital over the last few months. In May,

:03:53. > :03:55.managers launched an investigation after a senior consultant claimed

:03:56. > :03:59.Accident and Emergency services were "dangerously unsafe". In July, the

:04:00. > :04:01.Trust that runs the hospital was put into special measures by the

:04:02. > :04:04.Government after an investigation into higher than average death rates

:04:05. > :04:09.identified concerns over standards of care. And in August, the

:04:10. > :04:12.hospital's mental health crisis unit was condemned as a "poor quality

:04:13. > :04:15.environment" by NHS managers who said patients needed to be moved to

:04:16. > :04:21.better facilities elsewhere as soon as possible. But the MP for

:04:22. > :04:34.Gillingham says he believes the situation will improve. The hospital

:04:35. > :04:37.has to improve its services. It has got a new senior management team and

:04:38. > :04:39.I know they are working exceptionally hard to turn things

:04:40. > :04:42.around. Simon Jones is at the Medway

:04:43. > :04:51.Maritime Hospital now. Simon, what further checks will there now be at

:04:52. > :04:55.the hospital? There will be another unannounced inspection. If things

:04:56. > :04:59.don't improve, the inspectors have the power to close down maternity

:05:00. > :05:04.services here, although no one is talking about that happening at this

:05:05. > :05:12.stage. But the report paints a picture of a do what `` of a divide

:05:13. > :05:15.between midwives and management. One midwives said there is a concern

:05:16. > :05:21.that if they do raise problems with management, they might be shouted

:05:22. > :05:23.and treated like idiots. The inspectors find this cannot

:05:24. > :05:25.continue. Hospital managers now have until

:05:26. > :05:29.November second to tell inspectors exactly what they plan to do to make

:05:30. > :05:34.the improvements the Care Quality Commission has demanded to turn the

:05:35. > :05:37.situation around. Women who claim they were sexually

:05:38. > :05:43.assaulted by their GP have told a jury his examinations left them in

:05:44. > :05:46.pain, bleeding and feeling violated. Six patients say Dr Babatunde

:05:47. > :05:52.Oshunisi assaulted them at a medical centre in Strood, near Rochester.

:05:53. > :06:03.The oldest was 81. He denies the charges and says he acted properly

:06:04. > :06:07.at all times. Women had come to this clinic

:06:08. > :06:11.trusting a doctor would help them. Instead it has been said one of the

:06:12. > :06:21.GPs carried out a series of assaults. One patient said he

:06:22. > :06:32.examined her breast when she complained of bowel problems.

:06:33. > :06:50.He had carried out a series of gratuitous intimate examinations.

:06:51. > :06:56.Both of the women giving evidence said that although they felt deeply

:06:57. > :07:01.unhappy with what had happened, they felt that as a doctor, they must

:07:02. > :07:04.trust him. It was only one further allegations of assault against other

:07:05. > :07:09.women were made public that they felt they must come forward. An

:07:10. > :07:14.81`year`old woman who said you was also assorted will give her evidence

:07:15. > :07:20.tomorrow. The doctor denies all charges.

:07:21. > :07:22.In a moment: The alarming rise in wild bird trapping in the South

:07:23. > :07:35.East. A woman from Sussex who's suffered

:07:36. > :07:38.anonymous abuse via the internet for the past two years says she feels

:07:39. > :07:41.cheated after the Crown Prosecution Service recommended that no charges

:07:42. > :07:47.should be brought against two men arrested on suspicion of computer

:07:48. > :07:51.misuse. Nicola Brookes from Brighton likened the ordeal to being "chased

:07:52. > :07:53.by a pack of wolves". She made international headlines after

:07:54. > :08:03.so`called internet trolls falsely accused her of being a paedophile

:08:04. > :08:07.and drug dealer. She has been hounded by Internet

:08:08. > :08:11.trolls for the last two years but today, Nicola was told that because

:08:12. > :08:17.she interacted or engaged with trolls online, no one will face

:08:18. > :08:23.prosecution. They are adding insult to injury by blaming the victim! It

:08:24. > :08:31.is far too easy to say to me and many other victims, you started it.

:08:32. > :08:36.It all began two years ago when she posted messages of support for an X

:08:37. > :08:38.factor contestant who was thrown off the show. Within minutes, she became

:08:39. > :09:02.a target of hate mail. If somebody is calling you a

:09:03. > :09:07.paedophile or prostitute or drug dealer and there are 15 trolls on

:09:08. > :09:14.you all at once like a pack of animals, you do answer back. I don't

:09:15. > :09:18.regret doing it. Cases of Internet abuse have risen dramatically but

:09:19. > :09:23.legal experts say they are still covering new ground. When you're

:09:24. > :09:28.dealing with new law, you want a very clear`cut case to bring to

:09:29. > :09:31.court because it would damaging if people are found not guilty in

:09:32. > :09:37.court. Other people would think it was a green light for them to harass

:09:38. > :09:42.people on the Internet. Sussex Police say what they appreciate this

:09:43. > :09:47.has been a difficult time, they consider the case closed. What

:09:48. > :09:53.message does this send out now to victims? What message does this send

:09:54. > :09:57.out to the abuser? Nicola says she feels cheated and is taking legal

:09:58. > :09:59.advice on whether she can challenge the decision. Chrissie Reidy

:10:00. > :10:02.reporting and she joins us from Brighton Police Station. Chrissie,

:10:03. > :10:09.what have Sussex Police said about the investigation? Sussex Police

:10:10. > :10:14.tell us they are satisfied they conducted a detailed and thorough

:10:15. > :10:20.investigation. The CPS tell us there was insufficient evidence to support

:10:21. > :10:24.a realistic conviction. Nicola told me she is angry and disappointed.

:10:25. > :10:28.She says it feels as though the authorities have sided with the

:10:29. > :10:33.Internet trolls so she is seeking legal advice to see how or if she

:10:34. > :10:35.can take this forward. Tributes have been paid in

:10:36. > :10:39.Parliament this afternoon to a soldier from West Sussex who was

:10:40. > :10:42.killed in Afghanistan. The body of Lance Corporal James Brynin from

:10:43. > :10:45.Shoreham was repatriated yesterday. Both the Prime Minister David

:10:46. > :10:48.Cameron and the leader of the opposition Ed Miliband commended him

:10:49. > :10:51.for the service he'd given to his country Detectives investigating the

:10:52. > :10:53.death of an Italian teenager in Kent have charged four men with his

:10:54. > :10:56.murder. 19`year`old Joele Leotta died in

:10:57. > :10:59.hospital after he was attacked in Maidstone on Sunday night. It is

:11:00. > :11:01.clear from the tributes he was a highly talented and professional

:11:02. > :11:05.soldier. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at

:11:06. > :11:10.this difficult time. He has made the ultimate sacrifice and we must never

:11:11. > :11:13.forget him. Four Lithuanian men have been remanded in custody and will

:11:14. > :11:22.appear before Medway magistrates tomorrow. Six other people have been

:11:23. > :11:26.arrested in connection with the incident.

:11:27. > :11:28.The quality of work and training available to prisoners has

:11:29. > :11:32."plummeted", a new report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons has

:11:33. > :11:35.found. It also highlights failings at the Tinsley House detention

:11:36. > :11:37.centre near Gatwick where a doctor documented injuries to one prisoner

:11:38. > :11:41.that were consistent with torture, only for a caseworker to write later

:11:42. > :11:52.that allegations of torture were not credible. It is a very good

:11:53. > :11:59.detention centre that humanely treats those who are awaiting

:12:00. > :12:03.deportation, but any concerns raised in a particular case by

:12:04. > :12:06.professionals, it is important that is followed up by the Home Office.

:12:07. > :12:09.Our political editor Louise Stewart joins us from Westminster. Louise,

:12:10. > :12:19.there's damning criticism for some of our other prisons, too.

:12:20. > :12:23.Absolutely. In Sheppey, the inspector found staff were not

:12:24. > :12:28.confident in dealing with emergency situations and would never enter a

:12:29. > :12:32.cell alone, even if the prisoner's life was at risk. In Dover, they

:12:33. > :12:37.found they were carrying out too many strip searches and said the use

:12:38. > :12:40.of razor wire around the site was not proportionate to the level of

:12:41. > :12:45.security needed there. They also found problems in a lack of

:12:46. > :12:51.monitoring of prisoners in several other prisons. The findings of this

:12:52. > :12:56.report show politicians have to be aware that cuts to funding to

:12:57. > :12:59.prisons are impacting on inmates, staff and their ability to try and

:13:00. > :13:02.prevent reoffending. The RSPCA says they're increasingly

:13:03. > :13:07.concerned about illegal wild bird trapping in the South East. It's

:13:08. > :13:10.believed that tens of thousands of birds are taken each year across the

:13:11. > :13:16.UK, with individual birds selling for as much as ?50 to collectors and

:13:17. > :13:19.breeders online. It's believed as many as 500 illegal trappers are

:13:20. > :13:22.working in the country, and already this year, three Kent trapping sites

:13:23. > :13:38.have been identified ` in Ebbsfleet, Faversham and Ashford.

:13:39. > :13:43.Trapped. Wild goldfinches being held at an aviary in Northfleet. 15

:13:44. > :13:52.goldfinches were discovered by the RSPCA here at the home of this man,

:13:53. > :13:58.caught red`handed. It's the job of the specialist operations unit to

:13:59. > :14:03.try to catch the trappers. Officers need to protect their identity. I

:14:04. > :14:08.have been involved in hundreds of operations to deal with the

:14:09. > :14:13.possession of these birds, the taking of them and the unlawful

:14:14. > :14:20.selling of them. It is massively widespread and tens of thousands of

:14:21. > :14:24.birds, I think, each a year are caused to suffer through these

:14:25. > :14:29.activities. No one knows the true scale of the crime because birds can

:14:30. > :14:33.be caught in people 's back gardens. There was evidence of such of the

:14:34. > :14:39.garden in the man of Northfleet. We are on a public foot path. You have

:14:40. > :14:47.got people downhill on a daily basis. Here is whether site was set

:14:48. > :14:54.up. The gentleman had set up a camouflage area where he could and

:14:55. > :14:58.watch the birds. He had it set to a net, which he would pull a string

:14:59. > :15:05.and the net would catch anywhere up to five or ten birds at a time. This

:15:06. > :15:13.trap was found there, too. This is eight typical cage trap. Probably

:15:14. > :15:20.sings its heart out all day. They will come down. There will be food

:15:21. > :15:28.in this section. This is a collapsible perch. You got yourself

:15:29. > :15:35.a ?50 worth of bird. Others can be caught on sticks covered in blue.

:15:36. > :15:41.The RSPCA is hoping that by showing bird traps, members of the public

:15:42. > :15:45.might report sightings. This is our top story tonight: A

:15:46. > :15:48.shortage of midwives and a lack of equipment are putting the safety of

:15:49. > :15:52.mothers and babies at risk at Kent's biggest maternity unit, a damning

:15:53. > :15:56.report has found. The latest findings at the Medway Maritime

:15:57. > :15:58.Hospital come after it was put into special measures in July following

:15:59. > :16:01.an investigation into high patient death rates.

:16:02. > :16:10.Also in tonight's programme: She's the Belle of the Ball, but hold the

:16:11. > :16:19.gown! We speak to the 15`year`old Kent schoolgirl wowing and winning

:16:20. > :16:23.at the World Hip Hop Championships. Our mild and changeable weather

:16:24. > :16:30.continues for tomorrow. It will be settled, wet and windy, though, as

:16:31. > :16:34.we go into Friday. Damon Hill was the son of a Formula

:16:35. > :16:39.One star who went on to fulfill his potential by winning the world

:16:40. > :16:42.title. Henry Surtees was the son of another Grand Prix legend, John

:16:43. > :16:45.Surtees, but he tragically never had the chance to prove himself on the

:16:46. > :16:50.biggest stage, killed in a freak accident at Brands Hatch when he was

:16:51. > :16:54.just 18. Today, both Damon Hill and John Surtees were at Buckmore Park

:16:55. > :17:06.Go Kart track in Chatham to fundraise for an education centre

:17:07. > :17:11.there in Henry's memory. You would normally find Damon Hill

:17:12. > :17:20.driving something more powerful than a go cart but that did not stop him

:17:21. > :17:31.getting up to speed. It's a very exciting sport. A lot of young

:17:32. > :17:35.people want to have a go karting. There is a huge grass`roots sport

:17:36. > :17:41.there and it is a lot of fun. Fun but not without risks. Today's event

:17:42. > :17:46.remembers Henry Surtees who died of heart `` who died at brands hash.

:17:47. > :17:52.Now his father was to raise money for an education centre here. He

:17:53. > :17:56.says this is where Henry learned computing skills through racing.

:17:57. > :18:00.That was largely inspired by what he was doing in connection with his

:18:01. > :18:06.karting. Analysing data and what he had done on the corners and there

:18:07. > :18:12.are lots of opportunities out there, not just as drivers, but actually is

:18:13. > :18:18.engineers and support staff. If we can inspire a fewer youngsters to

:18:19. > :18:22.come along and get on a career path, then we will achieve something.

:18:23. > :18:31.Young racers say they always appreciate a helping hand. I see a

:18:32. > :18:38.lot of my friends not getting the education as other young kids have.

:18:39. > :18:42.You need a fallback plan. It is hoped to Henry 's legacy will see

:18:43. > :18:52.his peers excel on and off the track.

:18:53. > :18:56.There's no pickled sharks or unmade beds, but artist Bryan Senior's

:18:57. > :19:01.is a masterclass of life ` what we see every day, including striking

:19:02. > :19:06.scenes of his home town of Tunbridge Wells. Collectors praise his ability

:19:07. > :19:10.to capture moods and now a new exhibition of his work is on display

:19:11. > :19:14.at London's Court Gallery. Robin Gibson's live in Tunbridge Wells.

:19:15. > :19:17.Robin, he may not grab the headlines as much as other contemporary

:19:18. > :19:29.artists, but Bryan Senior still has quite a following. He is in his 70s

:19:30. > :19:34.and has been selling his work all his life. For his new show, they

:19:35. > :19:39.have been going back to people who bought his work in the 50s and 60s.

:19:40. > :19:43.But I reckon I have had the best viewed today. I have seen him in his

:19:44. > :19:55.element in his own home. It's a colourful odyssey. A journey around

:19:56. > :19:56.his house, its walls lined with his paintings is a journey through his

:19:57. > :20:10.past. Remarkably, he never went to art

:20:11. > :20:28.school, but this has been his life 's work and passion. This is a very

:20:29. > :20:34.frequently seen view. I feel as if I am a stranger somewhere, nothing is

:20:35. > :20:39.quite real, so I painted. I have a real connection with the world once

:20:40. > :20:48.I have painted it. And the world means real places and people? That's

:20:49. > :20:54.right. I admire abstract art. But it doesn't give me much to chew on. A

:20:55. > :20:58.walk around Tunbridge Wells reveals how it is a real world captured in

:20:59. > :21:06.mood and atmosphere, all in graphic detail. The new exhibition focuses

:21:07. > :21:10.on his early years, a time to reflect on what an artist 's life is

:21:11. > :21:14.meant then and might mean to others in the future. If they are

:21:15. > :21:23.determined to do it and don't mind the lean times and don't mind doing

:21:24. > :21:29.without comforts and family, it would be unfair to bring up children

:21:30. > :21:33.on an artist 's salary. It's an artist 's colourful catalogue,

:21:34. > :21:35.telling a story of a life of painting, painting the real world he

:21:36. > :21:55.sees where ever he may be. hear a few cynics cheering those

:21:56. > :22:00.comments on abstract art! He would be in the frame. The exhibition is

:22:01. > :22:04.now open. If you are in the neighbourhood, it is well worth a

:22:05. > :22:07.look. Peter Taylor earned his first win as

:22:08. > :22:10.interim manager as Gillingham defeated struggling Notts County 2`1

:22:11. > :22:13.last night. Chris Whelpdale opened the scoring with a low drive and

:22:14. > :22:24.then turned provider as Danny Kedwell ran on to his flick on to

:22:25. > :22:27.score his sixth goal of the season. Callum McGregor scored a solo effort

:22:28. > :22:30.for the visitors with ten minutes to go but the Gills held on. But

:22:31. > :22:35.Crawley's seven`game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end with a 3`0

:22:36. > :22:39.home defeat by Port Vale. They were getting chances and they score a

:22:40. > :22:44.goal and it's a nervous last few minutes. Fair play to the players.

:22:45. > :22:49.They have worked extremely hard. We can defend a little bit better than

:22:50. > :22:55.that to not give other teams too many chances. Midfielder Louis Dodds

:22:56. > :23:01.put the visitors ahead after a mix`up between Paul Jones and Joe

:23:02. > :23:05.Walsh. Ben Williamson made sure of the points for Vale in the second

:23:06. > :23:16.half, running from the halfway line before beating the keeper.

:23:17. > :23:19.She's just 15 years old but Kent schoolgirl Belle Fisher is already

:23:20. > :23:21.an international dance champion. Not content with winning the

:23:22. > :23:24.International Dance Organisation's European Hip Hop title, she's now

:23:25. > :23:27.added the World Championship to her collection. It means she's the

:23:28. > :23:38.first`ever dancer to hold both titles simultaneously.

:23:39. > :23:47.This is the moment Belle Fischer won the European hip`hop championship.

:23:48. > :23:53.Now she has added the world title to her collection. Back home in Herne

:23:54. > :24:02.Bay, she is keen to pass her skills onto dancers of all ages. I danced

:24:03. > :24:07.about 20 times to to the final, so to get that far, even the second

:24:08. > :24:11.round, I was so pleased. To get the final is a massive achievement for

:24:12. > :24:17.me. To dance against different people I don't normally dance

:24:18. > :24:29.against as well. But it is more than just an award winning dancer as she

:24:30. > :24:34.choreographed this routine. She's very kind. She's really good at

:24:35. > :24:42.teaching us because she breaks the dance up so we can understand it

:24:43. > :24:47.properly. Very happy that she got all of them awards. I'm really proud

:24:48. > :24:54.of her winning all of them trophies. It's just a really, like, clever how

:24:55. > :25:03.she has been able to get to that stage and dance. Diversity have

:25:04. > :25:17.helped make street dance popular and Bell hopes her success will rub off.

:25:18. > :25:24.Quite a mixed bag over the next couple of days. Tomorrow, mostly

:25:25. > :25:30.settled. But it will not last. Pretty stormy as we get into Friday.

:25:31. > :25:33.We started today with showers but it brightened up nicely by the

:25:34. > :25:41.afternoon and temperatures decent for this time of year. Highs of 17

:25:42. > :25:47.or 18 degrees. Look at those wins, though, they have been really

:25:48. > :25:51.blustery. But they are easing off. With the lighter winds, we will see

:25:52. > :25:55.mist and fog patches forming and temperatures call than they have

:25:56. > :26:00.been recently. Overnight lows of eight or nine degrees. A little bit

:26:01. > :26:05.chilly as we start the day tomorrow. A ridge of high pressure

:26:06. > :26:09.to thank for the several day and decent spells of sunshine throughout

:26:10. > :26:17.the day. Still with those southerly winds. Temperatures again holding up

:26:18. > :26:23.for this time of year: 15 or 16 degrees. A very pleasant feeling

:26:24. > :26:28.afternoon. Again, it will not last. Tomorrow night, the winds will keep

:26:29. > :26:35.up and the cloud will thicken. Dawn, outbreaks of heavy and

:26:36. > :26:39.persistent rain. Lows of 13 or 14 degrees. A mild but wet and windy

:26:40. > :26:45.picture as we start the day on Friday. That rain will move through

:26:46. > :26:51.pretty quickly. The afternoon brightens up nicely. Temperatures 18

:26:52. > :26:56.or 19 degrees. But a very unpleasant start the day. We hold onto those

:26:57. > :27:02.blustery showers we `` as we go into Saturday. By the afternoon,

:27:03. > :27:07.brightening up a little bit. Sunday, it turns really stormy. Changeable

:27:08. > :27:09.weather over the next couple of days. Lots of blue on the map as

:27:10. > :27:12.well. On South East Today tomorrow: We'll

:27:13. > :27:16.be speaking to 15`year`old Bethany Davy from Dartford who's part of a

:27:17. > :27:21.young band aiming to be top of the pops... Well, actually, the poppies.

:27:22. > :27:24.The Poppy Girls, whose fathers all serve with the Armed Forces, will be

:27:25. > :27:27.singing the official 2013 Poppy Appeal single and performing in

:27:28. > :27:35.front of the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall next month.

:27:36. > :27:41.That looks great, doesn't it?
