:00:00. > :00:00.London. That is all from the BBC

:00:00. > :00:10.Welcome to South East Today, I'm Natalie Graham. I'm Rob Smith.

:00:11. > :00:13.Tonight's top stories: The Sussex woman terrorised by her former

:00:14. > :00:21.partner says not enough is being done to enforce the new stalking

:00:22. > :00:26.laws. He followed me everywhere I went. He knew everywhere I was. I

:00:27. > :00:29.had to go and live with my parents for six months.

:00:30. > :00:32.Standing down ` the Kent MP Laura Sandys says its been a

:00:33. > :00:39.heartwrenching decision, but she had to put her family first.

:00:40. > :00:41.Also in tonight's programme: He disappeared overboard ` grieving

:00:42. > :00:47.family of a man who vanished mid`Channel call for all ferries to

:00:48. > :00:50.be fitted with CCTV. She nailed it ` the Brighton mum

:00:51. > :01:01.who's been named the best nail technician in the country.

:01:02. > :01:04.Monty Python is still hot stuff and Sussex actress Carol Cleveland will

:01:05. > :01:16.be joining the boys for their reunion gigs.

:01:17. > :01:21.Good evening. A Sussex woman who was stalked for

:01:22. > :01:25.four years by her former partner but then helped bring about a change in

:01:26. > :01:29.the law, says the authorities still need to do more to combat the crime.

:01:30. > :01:32.Sam Taylor, from Brighton, went to Downing Street to talk about her

:01:33. > :01:35.experiences. It led to tougher stalking laws being introduced a

:01:36. > :01:38.year ago, but one organisation which helps victims says the police and

:01:39. > :01:47.the justice system aren't doing enough to enforce the legislation.

:01:48. > :01:53.Mark Sanders reports. Sam Taylor knows what it is like to

:01:54. > :01:58.live in fear, fear close to home. Threat and abuse from her ex. One

:01:59. > :02:01.night after it with the children to bed he attacked me with a knife and

:02:02. > :02:06.tried to break my neck. That was just the start. I would be walking

:02:07. > :02:10.through the town centre any would suddenly appear in front of me. He

:02:11. > :02:16.would have letters through the door, endless tech, endless calls. While

:02:17. > :02:21.Sam is pleased to offer stalking laws are in place, she feels the

:02:22. > :02:28.justice system is not doing enough. There hasn't been enough training,

:02:29. > :02:32.specifically for police officers, and in my experience these officers

:02:33. > :02:37.are really restrict did in what they can do and how much they can protect

:02:38. > :02:41.the Vic them when you haven't got the Crown Prosecution Service and

:02:42. > :02:46.judges on board. The first`ever servers for stalking victim says

:02:47. > :02:51.that from December last year to June 320 people were arrested for

:02:52. > :02:54.stalking in England and Wales. In Sussex, 14 people were arrested with

:02:55. > :03:03.it people charged and three people jailed. This man stop his eggs in

:03:04. > :03:09.the Sussex Hospital discovered `` described as a doctor. The charity

:03:10. > :03:12.says that sentencing guidelines have not been updated and only one in

:03:13. > :03:17.four police officers received training to understand the new

:03:18. > :03:23.legislation. This is the area were most women and children die.

:03:24. > :03:27.Stalking has serious physical consequences. This comes as Sussex

:03:28. > :03:34.launched its White ribbon campaign to deal with domestic violence. It

:03:35. > :03:39.is an area we are still exploring. At last we have specific legislation

:03:40. > :03:44.that we can apply to the stalking community, if you want to put it

:03:45. > :03:48.that way. I am confident our staff are well trained and prepared. We

:03:49. > :03:55.are keen that this training is given to all officers. It is something we

:03:56. > :04:04.are very alive too. You have had a dear. Rome wasn't built in the dear,

:04:05. > :04:08.either. Sam Taylor feels that some progress is being made in dealing

:04:09. > :04:10.with stalking, but attitudes still need to change in the criminal

:04:11. > :04:13.justice system. Mark Sanders reporting there. He

:04:14. > :04:17.joins us from Brighton. There has been another development in the law

:04:18. > :04:23.today that aims to protect women from violence. The Home Secretary

:04:24. > :04:30.announced the roll`out of a pilot scheme called Claire'slaw, named

:04:31. > :04:40.after Claire would he was murdered by her ex`boyfriend. It entitles

:04:41. > :04:48.people to ask the police to CF their partner has a violent history. `` to

:04:49. > :04:54.CF their partner has a violent history.

:04:55. > :04:57.The MP for South Thanet has announced she won't stand at the

:04:58. > :05:00.next General Election. Laura Sandys, the Conservative who has represented

:05:01. > :05:03.the seat since 2010, said this morning that a wide range of family

:05:04. > :05:06.demands meant she couldn't continue in the role after 2015. However,

:05:07. > :05:10.UKIP have today said they believe Mrs Sandys knew she would lose if

:05:11. > :05:13.their leader, Nigel Farage, stood in the constituency. Our political

:05:14. > :05:23.reporter Ellie Price joins us from Ramsgate now. Ellie, this has come

:05:24. > :05:29.as a bit of a surprise? It most certainly has. Everyone I spoke to

:05:30. > :05:34.today was very surprised. Even the local Conservative Association, who

:05:35. > :05:39.now have the task of finding another candidate. It took six months to

:05:40. > :05:50.make this decision and she announced that with great sadness and regret

:05:51. > :05:54.today. She won the seat from Labour in the last election with the

:05:55. > :05:59.majority of more than 7,000. It will be her last. It is a great Rutledge

:06:00. > :06:14.to have been elected. In a statement, she said:

:06:15. > :06:22.she is one of the brightest of a very bright intake in 2010. She

:06:23. > :06:27.would have made a superb minister. At the end of the day, I know she

:06:28. > :06:33.has agonised over this, and she has had to make a decision and she has

:06:34. > :06:37.chosen to put your husband first, and you have to respect for doing

:06:38. > :06:47.that. Because of the way that society expect women to be the main

:06:48. > :06:51.caregivers, EDIFACT women's careers more than a doors on their male

:06:52. > :06:56.counterparts. Well she says her decision is a personal one, UKIP

:06:57. > :07:04.says it is entirely political. The party won seven out of the seats in

:07:05. > :07:10.Thanet. There is speculation that Nigel Farage would stand here. She

:07:11. > :07:15.has probably looked at the county elections, realise there is a fight

:07:16. > :07:23.on her hands, and may well have decided, along with personal

:07:24. > :07:26.reasons, not to fight the seat. People here are surprised to find

:07:27. > :07:32.themselves in the middle of this fight. I think of it is good for the

:07:33. > :07:37.time, it is good for us, no matter what colour they are. She has been

:07:38. > :07:42.very good. I am disappointed. I thought she did really well. I would

:07:43. > :07:49.like to see a big shake`up right year to get the job done. Lots of

:07:50. > :07:54.speculation about the next move forward Nigel Farage. He did stand

:07:55. > :07:58.here in South Thanet in 2005. I asked him a few weeks ago if it

:07:59. > :08:03.would be here that he would stand as a mP, but he said that the final

:08:04. > :08:07.decision would not be made until after the European elections next

:08:08. > :08:14.year. What is clear tonight is that there will be a new MP come May

:08:15. > :08:18.2015. In a moment: The ground`breaking

:08:19. > :08:28.therapy that is helping a young autistic boy overcome his condition.

:08:29. > :08:31.The family of a man who went missing on board a cross`Channel ferry six

:08:32. > :08:33.months ago, and is presumed dead, wants CCTV cameras installed to

:08:34. > :08:37.prevent other tragedies. 30`year`old Richard Fearnside, from Whitstable,

:08:38. > :08:40.went on deck for a cigarette, but never returned. His family say they

:08:41. > :08:50.don't know whether he fell or jumped because there were no cameras. Simon

:08:51. > :08:52.Jones reports. Their son is missing presumed dead, but they say there

:08:53. > :08:57.will never know what actually happened to Richard because of a

:08:58. > :09:06.lack of camera coverage. Their online campaign is calling for CCTV

:09:07. > :09:10.on all passenger deck `` decks. It is tragic. He was a lovely person.

:09:11. > :09:19.Very kind. It is a terrible, terrible loss. Richard was returning

:09:20. > :09:23.home on this very. His parents believe CCTV footage could have

:09:24. > :09:28.alerted the crew for a potential man overboard earlier and alerted them

:09:29. > :09:36.as to whether he jumps or sell. Not only would CCTV help identify when

:09:37. > :09:42.people go missing, but it could also be a tool for the crew to alert

:09:43. > :09:47.crewmembers to get people off the deck of the resistor and coming up.

:09:48. > :09:52.It could be a tool for passenger safety. Because he just vanished,

:09:53. > :09:57.and that shouldn't happen that somebody can just vanished and the

:09:58. > :10:04.ferry company more or less dismissed that saying, that is a shame, well,

:10:05. > :10:08.it is more than that. It is tragic. PM Goh say they have some external

:10:09. > :10:12.cameras, but that would be impossible to cover all of the

:10:13. > :10:19.outside decks, impossible to monitor the cameras in real`time, and

:10:20. > :10:33.impossible to records the images in perpetuity. The cameras would need

:10:34. > :10:36.to be wiped regularly, stored well, video screens to monitor it.

:10:37. > :10:43.Personally, I don't think it is practical. P and O tonight extended

:10:44. > :10:47.its deepest sympathy to the family. Lets talk to Simon, he's at the Port

:10:48. > :10:53.of Dover. Simon, this case has now been raised with the Transport

:10:54. > :10:58.Minister? That was done by the family'sMP. The minister said that

:10:59. > :11:04.when carrying out risk assessments for particular ferries, companies

:11:05. > :11:08.should consider the use of technology, including CCTV, but it

:11:09. > :11:12.is up to each company to decide if they want to do that. The ending

:11:13. > :11:15.stairs as soon as he went missing they raised it with the

:11:16. > :11:20.authorities, a big search to place and they have worked closely with

:11:21. > :11:26.the police. Because a body hasn't been discovered an inquest cannot

:11:27. > :11:30.take place. That has only added to the confusion for the family.

:11:31. > :11:33.The question of whether a new grammar school annexe in Sevenoaks

:11:34. > :11:36.would be legal has been raised with the Education Secretary. In a letter

:11:37. > :11:40.to the town's MP, Michael Gove says he needs to find out whether this

:11:41. > :11:43.constitutes a new school, which would be illegal, or an expansion,

:11:44. > :11:47.which wouldn't be. Sevenoaks has been waiting for months to hear if

:11:48. > :11:58.it will get the country's first new grammar provision for 40 years.

:11:59. > :12:02.A free school in Crawley, one of the first of its kind to open under

:12:03. > :12:05.England's free school programme, is facing closure if it doesn't come up

:12:06. > :12:08.with a convincing improvement plan in the next two weeks. The Discovery

:12:09. > :12:12.New School was put into special measures in June, just 20 months

:12:13. > :12:15.after it opened. It has been reinspected by Ofsted this month and

:12:16. > :12:18.could be shut if things don't get better.

:12:19. > :12:21.Most parents spend their time trying to stop their children from

:12:22. > :12:24.fighting, but eight`year`old Nico from Sevenoaks has just started to

:12:25. > :12:27.defend himself against his little sister ` and his mum couldn't be

:12:28. > :12:30.happier. That's because she realised her son, who suffers from autism,

:12:31. > :12:33.was finally getting better. She believes its all down to an unusual

:12:34. > :12:36.therapy which involves listening to classical music through special

:12:37. > :12:42.headphones while doing some kind of physical activity. Charlie Rose has

:12:43. > :12:48.been to find out more. As a child with autism, yet you old

:12:49. > :12:53.Nico Mac `` it you old Nico hasn't always been the site going. He has

:12:54. > :12:56.been having a special kind of therapy called the integrated

:12:57. > :13:01.listening system in the last few months which apparently has brought

:13:02. > :13:05.about some significant changes. The main changes are the social skills.

:13:06. > :13:10.He didn't start speaking until he was four and a half, and now he can

:13:11. > :13:17.speak and sentences, which is brilliant. Before he would never say

:13:18. > :13:21.no, he would just go along with people asked him to do. He is his

:13:22. > :13:28.personality, becoming more assertive. The system claims to work

:13:29. > :13:33.by using a combination of music and vibrations through a set of

:13:34. > :13:37.headphones to reach in the brain and strength and numerological pathways.

:13:38. > :13:43.By giving particular kinds of movements and activity, along with

:13:44. > :13:53.the stimulation through the ears and through the bone, Nico is building

:13:54. > :13:59.up those pathways that are so important for learning. I press play

:14:00. > :14:06.and then the music goes on. That is how it works. As shown in the film

:14:07. > :14:12.the King 's speech, similar attack weeks were used to cure King George

:14:13. > :14:16.VI of the stammer. Integrated listening systems are unproven and

:14:17. > :14:20.some experts say they are not for everyone. They might help them with

:14:21. > :14:29.some things, manage other aspects of their autism, but I don't believe it

:14:30. > :14:33.is a cure. Nothing is proven. It is bad for parents, because we have to

:14:34. > :14:40.look forward to look for whatever we can define different ways. The

:14:41. > :14:47.technology cost about ?800 and it has taken 18 months of therapy, the

:14:48. > :15:00.equipment can also be hired, but they are convinced it has helped his

:15:01. > :15:03.condition. Nico Our top story tonight: A Sussex

:15:04. > :15:07.woman who was stalked by her former partner says more needs to be done

:15:08. > :15:10.by the authorities to combat the crime. Sam Taylor from Brighton

:15:11. > :15:13.helped bring about tougher stalking laws which were introduced a year

:15:14. > :15:16.ago, but one organisation which helps victims says the police and

:15:17. > :15:25.the justice system aren't doing enough to enforce the legislation.

:15:26. > :15:30.It has been a cold start to the week, perfect skating weather, but

:15:31. > :15:40.will it stay that way? Join me later to find out.

:15:41. > :15:44.Some babies are particularly longed for and Port Lympne Wild Animal Park

:15:45. > :15:47.has been waiting nearly 30 years for the four cheetah cubs born there in

:15:48. > :15:50.September. Today, those babies made their first public appearance.

:15:51. > :15:57.Cheetahs are listed as vulnerable on the endangered species list because

:15:58. > :16:01.of the high cub mortality rate. They are famously fast ` they can

:16:02. > :16:03.accelerate to 71mph in about three seconds, quicker than most sports

:16:04. > :16:07.cars. Here's something else most sports cars can't do! They are the

:16:08. > :16:10.only big cat which can turn in mid`air while sprinting. Peter

:16:11. > :16:20.Whittlesea has been along to meet the new arrivals.

:16:21. > :16:24.Like all new mums, she has hands full, especially after having four

:16:25. > :16:32.cups in her first letter. They are also the first sheet is to be born

:16:33. > :16:37.in Port Lympne for almost 40 years. It has gone brilliantly. We couldn't

:16:38. > :16:43.have asked for anything better. She chose which meal she liked it and

:16:44. > :16:47.they headed straightaway, did the business home and her pregnancy went

:16:48. > :16:52.really well. She is being a brilliant mum. She looked after them

:16:53. > :16:59.really well. We didn't have to intervene. It has been great,

:17:00. > :17:04.really. At 11 weeks old, the two boys and two girls are good fun, but

:17:05. > :17:14.still very timid. They can be seen by the public yet. They are very

:17:15. > :17:20.cute. It has been the highlight of the year for us. Watching them

:17:21. > :17:24.getting older, playing around with each other, it is great to watch. We

:17:25. > :17:34.will probably name them and they have some characteristics. The

:17:35. > :17:40.keepers can tell them apart by the fact they have clipped a different

:17:41. > :17:43.pattern into their further. Their confidence is growing. It will be

:17:44. > :17:56.long before visitors get the chance to see the scabs. `` the Cubs.

:17:57. > :18:00.If, like me, you are thinking of a getting a pre`Christmas manicure and

:18:01. > :18:04.you are considering something a little different to go with the

:18:05. > :18:06.party outfit this season, then you could do worse than visiting

:18:07. > :18:10.Anieszka Ceesay in Brighton. The student and mother of two has just

:18:11. > :18:13.won a national competition, so you could say she has nailed it! Her

:18:14. > :18:16.elaborate designs range from witches to wildlife ` and some are more

:18:17. > :18:48.practical than others. Juliette Parkin reports.

:18:49. > :18:56.In the east of Europe, where they come from, there are different

:18:57. > :19:04.styles of nails. They are much longer, much more advanced. I want

:19:05. > :19:07.to be part of the revolution! An artist with the smallest of

:19:08. > :19:12.canvases, but requiring the greatest of scale. Anieszka Ceesay is

:19:13. > :19:17.training in beauty therapy, but her new designs stretch far beyond the

:19:18. > :19:30.basic manicure. I think every woman should have their nails done. It is

:19:31. > :19:35.just nice to look pampered. I have find that a lot of women were not

:19:36. > :19:43.aware of what you can do with the brush and paint. Anieszka came from

:19:44. > :19:46.Brighton `` came to Brighton from Poland two years ago. She taught

:19:47. > :19:47.herself at home before signing up to I%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% a co

:19:48. > :19:53.herself at home before signing up to a course. She has just beaten top

:19:54. > :19:59.male artists from all over the UK to win the world skills competition,

:20:00. > :20:02.recognising real talent in trainees. We have been following her progress

:20:03. > :20:12.and we could not have been more proud. Now Anieszka is looking for

:20:13. > :20:16.opportunities to bring her art into look salons, and she says she is

:20:17. > :20:29.hoping to be the worlds best at nail Olympics.

:20:30. > :20:32.The nail Olympics? They do exist, apparently.

:20:33. > :20:35.It wasn't exactly a goal`fest for the South East's top clubs this

:20:36. > :20:39.weekend. In fact, they managed just one goal between them. The good news

:20:40. > :20:46.was that goal was enough to give Brighton a hard`earned victory at

:20:47. > :20:49.Wigan. Neil Bell reports. No travelling team have won at Wigan

:20:50. > :20:55.this season, but the confidence in Brighton is growing. When Grant Holt

:20:56. > :21:09.dispossessed the goalkeeper, Google appeared at his mercy, but he put

:21:10. > :21:15.the shop wide. Albion went ahead with this deft header. There were

:21:16. > :21:21.seven plastic stop later on to make sure that the their one goal

:21:22. > :21:26.advantage and give them the win. It is a good team, good squad and a

:21:27. > :21:34.good manager. It is not easy to come here. No one has done it before this

:21:35. > :21:39.season, to, when. For me, it wasn't our best performance. Charlton

:21:40. > :21:46.battled hard at QPR omitted something special, in fact, very

:21:47. > :21:50.special from Charlie Austen to take the points. Jill in'sthe

:21:51. > :22:01.straightening the stop start season continued on Saturday. The only goal

:22:02. > :22:10.came from all them. I am frustrated with them. We are not sure when what

:22:11. > :22:15.we are capable of. I think players, we seem to be losing a little bit of

:22:16. > :22:21.confidence to use a leaf. It is over a month since Crawley'slast league

:22:22. > :22:29.win, but they dug in against Walsall and certainly deserved the points.

:22:30. > :22:33.`` the point. She is known as the seventh Python `

:22:34. > :22:39.Carole Cleveland appeared in many of the Monty Python and the Flying

:22:40. > :22:42.Circus sketches from the late 1960s. The actress, who lives in

:22:43. > :22:45.Shoreham`by`Sea, also starred in all four Python films. Carol's now going

:22:46. > :22:49.to reunite with the boys for their five comeback shows at the O2. This

:22:50. > :22:53.morning the first one sold out in 43 seconds. The other four then sold

:22:54. > :23:02.out within an hour. Jane Witherspoon has been to talk to her.

:23:03. > :23:08.Hello! Welcome, gentle sir knight. From cult classic, Monty Python has

:23:09. > :23:18.been entertaining us for more than 40 years. As the seventh official

:23:19. > :23:23.`, and the only women, Carol Cleveland has got more than you

:23:24. > :23:30.still holding her room and it comes to those naughty boys. Do you want

:23:31. > :23:36.to go upstairs? Or have you come to arrange a holiday? To arrange a

:23:37. > :23:41.holiday. The first day at rehearsals, the boys were just

:23:42. > :23:49.mucking about like schoolboys, being extremely silly. I sat there

:23:50. > :23:53.thinking, well, I don't know. I was married at the time and I said to my

:23:54. > :23:59.husband when I went home, I don't think this will last more than five

:24:00. > :24:02.episodes. It is ridiculous! Tickets for the Monty Python comeback
