:00:09. > :00:55.The luminous sound of James Whitbourn, up for a Grammy for his

:00:56. > :01:05.work based on the life of Anne Frank.

:01:06. > :01:10.And, alas poor Porrick. The pig abandoned on a hillside and now

:01:11. > :01:13.adopted by a village. Police have launched a murddr

:01:14. > :01:16.enquiry tonight after a car was deliberately driven at a man,

:01:17. > :01:19.pinning him against metal r`ilings in Gillingham.

:01:20. > :01:22.The victim, named as 33`year`old John Hedges, was air`lifted to a

:01:23. > :01:30.London hospital last night, but died this afternoon. Our reporter Ceri

:01:31. > :01:35.Perkins joins us from the scene The aftermath of last night 's

:01:36. > :01:40.incident was still very much in evidence in Gillingham. The card

:01:41. > :01:46.that mode down 33`year`old John hedges remained at the scend.

:01:47. > :01:51.Neighbours were shocked. I looked out of the window and there was this

:01:52. > :01:58.one guy standing there, his friend was shouting. Police escortdd me to

:01:59. > :02:02.my house because everybody needed to be escorted because it was still

:02:03. > :02:06.dangerous at that point. It is a bit scary to know that there has been a

:02:07. > :02:14.murder take place not even ` minute ago. `` away. It is understood there

:02:15. > :02:21.was a row between Mr Hedges and two men in green Mondeo. As he walked

:02:22. > :02:28.away, the car hit him and ldft him critically injured. The polhce have

:02:29. > :02:32.established that the car was stolen. The people that were here, they are

:02:33. > :02:34.the people we rely upon to lake themselves available to givd

:02:35. > :02:42.evidence about what they saw and heard. That is crucial in this kind

:02:43. > :02:48.of incident, where it is a pretty belt `` built`up area. Officers are

:02:49. > :02:56.studying neighbourhood CCTV footage in the hope it will help tr`ce those

:02:57. > :02:59.responsible. A "persistent record of crilinality"

:03:00. > :03:02.` the damning verdict from the country's top judge today, `fter

:03:03. > :03:05.Southern Water lost an appe`l over being fined ?200,000 for allowing

:03:06. > :03:14.raw sewage to be pumped into the sea off protected Kent beaches.

:03:15. > :03:16.Defective equipment at Foreness Point pumping station resulted in

:03:17. > :03:19.several discharges of untre`ted sewage in 2011. Lord Thomas, the

:03:20. > :03:23.Lord Chief Justice, said Sotthern Water had not demonstrated to the

:03:24. > :03:29.court what steps it had takdn to address the problem. Piers Hopkirk

:03:30. > :03:36.reports. Steady sees the paddle surfdrs

:03:37. > :03:40.today. In marked contrast to the icy blast aimed at Southern Watdr. It

:03:41. > :03:48.sought to have its fine for discharging raw sewage reduced. The

:03:49. > :03:52.audacity of challenging the fine shows what kind of company we are

:03:53. > :03:56.dealing with, a company that could not care less about the dam`ge it

:03:57. > :04:02.does to the environment, a company that could not care less about the

:04:03. > :04:06.adapter `` the damaged the dconomy and reputation of Thanet. The fine

:04:07. > :04:11.should have been higher and Southern Water's eyes should have watered.

:04:12. > :04:20.Between January and July 2001 there were several sewage dischargeds ``

:04:21. > :04:31.the `` discharges. Last Augtst, Southern Water was fined ?200,0 0

:04:32. > :04:38.for the 2011 incidents. Davd Melmoth runs a surf school but was hard`hit.

:04:39. > :04:43.For a massive company to go back and try to get money back something that

:04:44. > :04:47.there was their fault is disgraceful. Today Southern Water

:04:48. > :04:52.defended its legal challengd. Although the incident happened, it

:04:53. > :04:56.did not cause any water quality problems to the beaches, thdy still

:04:57. > :05:01.continue to meet the environmental standard, so we wanted a second

:05:02. > :05:05.opinion on the fine. We now fully accept it. For many businesses it is

:05:06. > :05:09.the quality of the water here that is their lifeblood. Many sax it is

:05:10. > :05:15.the long`term damage to public confidence that has hit thel

:05:16. > :05:18.hardest. The fine upheld today only relates to the 2011 discharges.

:05:19. > :05:22.Investigations into what happened the following year continue.

:05:23. > :05:32.Southern Water may well facd further sanctions.

:05:33. > :05:39.In a moment we will hear from the boss of Cuadrilla about the latest

:05:40. > :05:43.plans for oil exploration is. `` explorations.

:05:44. > :05:47.Four years ago Joan Keeley had a home worth half a million pounds and

:05:48. > :05:50.a property portfolio worth lore than a million. Now, after a dispute over

:05:51. > :05:52.loan repayments with her bank, she is living on benefits in a

:05:53. > :05:55.one`bedroom flat. She also owes the former Kent

:05:56. > :05:59.Reliance building society more than ?300,000. She is now campaigning for

:06:00. > :06:06.a change in the law. Our business correspondent Mark Norman h`s this

:06:07. > :06:12.exclusive report. These are your arrears, if xou don't

:06:13. > :06:17.pay them we will take court action. Joan has years of paper but ``

:06:18. > :06:25.paperwork showing how the b`nk took over her business. By 2010 she and

:06:26. > :06:29.her partner had more than ?0 million of outstanding mortgage debt and

:06:30. > :06:35.more than a dozen houses led `` let to tenants but after a disagreement

:06:36. > :06:42.she asked for information and to press a point with held the monthly

:06:43. > :06:47.payments. She said, just pax it They did not give us any more

:06:48. > :06:51.information. We got a letter saying they wanted the entire mortgages

:06:52. > :06:58.paid up, close to a couple of million pounds at that time. Without

:06:59. > :07:07.warning we had a letter to say that they had put our properties into

:07:08. > :07:10.receivership. LPA receivership is a complex subjects. Receivers are

:07:11. > :07:14.pointed to recover the secured debt. They offer banks the

:07:15. > :07:21.advantages of repossession without many of the big `` the risks but

:07:22. > :07:25.they are considered a last resort. LPA receivers continue to rtn the

:07:26. > :07:29.business but the landlord is responsible for the debts and any

:07:30. > :07:34.future debt. Joan's bank told us they could not discuss her case but

:07:35. > :07:39.that they make every effort to work with borrowers and only a point LPA

:07:40. > :07:44.receivers when all other attempt to resolve the situation have proven

:07:45. > :07:49.unsuccessful they use experhence to use receivers who work with the bank

:07:50. > :07:56.and the borrower. The matter was raised in Parliament by Joan's MP. I

:07:57. > :07:59.want the government, the banks, the individuals and the other agencies

:08:00. > :08:03.to come together to make sure everything is done to help

:08:04. > :08:08.individuals in these circumstances. I have come across hundreds of

:08:09. > :08:11.landlords with this problem. Other landlords are raising awareness of

:08:12. > :08:14.the issue, believing the problems started when the government stopped

:08:15. > :08:21.paying housing benefit directly to landlords. There are a lot of good

:08:22. > :08:27.tenants who have been on hotsing benefit, a lot of single muls, great

:08:28. > :08:30.tenants, who have settled. Joan believed that if the bank h`d sold

:08:31. > :08:44.her properties she would have been left with a considerable amount of

:08:45. > :08:47.equity. We live in separate `` a single property, I claim benefits

:08:48. > :08:59.and I have no prospect of ilproving the situation. Landlords want the

:09:00. > :09:04.situation improved, believing that LPA receivers should be subject to

:09:05. > :09:08.legislation. A Kent man who faced trial hn Uganda

:09:09. > :09:11.for being gay has been deported to the UK today. 65`year`old Bdrnard

:09:12. > :09:15.Randell, from Faversham, had faced up to two years in jail, after

:09:16. > :09:18.stolen images showing him in a sexual relationship with a lan were

:09:19. > :09:25.published in Uganda newspapdr. `` a Ugandan newspaper. A judge this week

:09:26. > :09:30.instead ordered his deportation The Euro millions millionaire raffle

:09:31. > :09:35.prize, bought last year and an claimed, will now go to projects

:09:36. > :09:39.across the UK. A court today has heard how members

:09:40. > :09:43.of the public had to run for cover behind parked cars during a shooting

:09:44. > :09:45.in Hove. Edmund Nela, who is originally from Albania, is accused

:09:46. > :09:48.of murdering scaffolder Xhel Krasniqi on Selbourne Road back in

:09:49. > :09:51.May. Our home affairs reporter Rdbecca

:09:52. > :09:55.Williams has been in court following the trial and is in Hove now.

:09:56. > :10:02.Rebecca, there were a number of eyewitnesses who saw what h`ppened,

:10:03. > :10:06.weren't there? Yes, and one of the witnesses described her terror and

:10:07. > :10:10.fear as events unfolded. Shd said she heard a number of gunshots on

:10:11. > :10:18.this road that night and shd described a man brandishing what she

:10:19. > :10:23.believed was a gun. Xhem Kr`sniqi was fatally wounded and tonhght we

:10:24. > :10:29.have heard from his family. The wife of the man pictured in the

:10:30. > :10:35.middle broke down as she described the last time she saw her htsband

:10:36. > :10:39.alive. Xhem Krasniqi was fatally wounded on Selbourne brewed in May.

:10:40. > :10:43.In court today his wife described how they had been in Brighton on the

:10:44. > :10:48.day visiting her husband's brother. She said she had never really wanted

:10:49. > :10:55.to go. She described hearing the door of the flat slam and started to

:10:56. > :10:59.weep as she recalled how her husband had not even said goodbye. @n

:11:00. > :11:07.eyewitness today described hearing four loud bangs. She said she and

:11:08. > :11:14.her boyfriend took shelter behind parked cars as shots were fhred She

:11:15. > :11:19.says, I remember when I next looked up the males were running up

:11:20. > :11:24.Selbourne Road. She said I then looked over the road again. A man

:11:25. > :11:28.was on the ground. He was the only male left. People ran from `ll

:11:29. > :11:33.directions to help him. The defendant, Edmund Nela, denhes all

:11:34. > :11:39.the charges against him. We also heard today how one of the len

:11:40. > :11:50.involved in the incident, Xhem Krasniqi's nephew, had a lucky

:11:51. > :11:55.escape. The defendant, Edmund Nela, denies all charges. The tri`l will

:11:56. > :12:00.continue on Monday, when we will hear from more prosecution

:12:01. > :12:03.witnesses. The latest planning application by

:12:04. > :12:09.Cuadrilla has been made public. It shows exactly where oil filling is

:12:10. > :12:12.set to take place in bulk and, with the drill extending almost 0000

:12:13. > :12:16.metres to the west of the drill site.

:12:17. > :12:20.Earlier I spoke to the chief executive of Cuadrilla, who was keen

:12:21. > :12:26.to assure residents that no fracking would take place.

:12:27. > :12:32.We drilled a while there last summer and we have confirmed that we will

:12:33. > :12:38.not need to use fracking at that well. The lime scale is alrdady

:12:39. > :12:43.fractured. We know there is oil there but we don't know at what

:12:44. > :12:46.rate. People's concerns abott the possible effects of ground water and

:12:47. > :12:51.so on, they are completely groundless? I would say it hs pretty

:12:52. > :12:57.misplaced. The ground water at the site already has methane in it, we

:12:58. > :13:06.established that in the sampling. It is well`known that in Sussex the

:13:07. > :13:09.ground water has methane. Do you have any idea how many lorrhes might

:13:10. > :13:15.be going through the villagd on a daily basis? This activity we are

:13:16. > :13:22.proposing is substantially less than the drilling. Seven or eight lorries

:13:23. > :13:27.a day would be the maximum to set up the testing. If we ever got to

:13:28. > :13:33.production phase, you would be looking at one or two maximtm.

:13:34. > :13:37.Our top story tonight ` polhce have launched a murder enquiry after a

:13:38. > :13:42.man was killed in a hit`and`run incident following a row in

:13:43. > :13:46.Gillingham. John hedges died after being taken to a London hospital

:13:47. > :13:51.after the collision. Later we meet Porrick and the

:13:52. > :13:55.village residents who have given him a home.

:13:56. > :14:01.Saturday is the king and brhghter but for Sunday it is turning wet and

:14:02. > :14:05.windy. `` Saturday is looking. If you have a story you think we

:14:06. > :14:07.should be covering an South East Today, we would like to hear from

:14:08. > :14:34.you. It is a piece of music that one

:14:35. > :14:37.critic said tells the story of Anne Frank with such tender respdct it is

:14:38. > :14:40.almost impossible to hear whthout tears. Now a performance of Kent

:14:41. > :14:44.composer James Whitbourn's @nnelies is in line to be acknowledgdd with

:14:45. > :14:46.one of the most prestigious awards in music.

:14:47. > :14:49.But James himself will not walking the red carpet in Los Angelds to

:14:50. > :14:53.accept a Grammy in person. Hnstead he will be waiting to hear the

:14:54. > :14:54.result from his home in Sevdnoaks. Georgina Burnett has been to meet

:14:55. > :15:13.him. The haunting notes of Annelhes,

:15:14. > :15:20.written by James Whitbourn, who has been nominated for a Grammy award. I

:15:21. > :15:25.was terribly pleased becausd there is a lovely quiet, ute for people,

:15:26. > :15:29.and they had got so engrossdd in the piece, and I know it means so much

:15:30. > :15:35.to all of those people. It was lovely news. The piece is b`sed on

:15:36. > :15:38.the diary of Holocaust victhm Anne Frank and it is the first thme her

:15:39. > :15:46.words have been entrusted to such a project. James spent time in the

:15:47. > :15:52.tiny annex in Amsterdam where she wrote the diary in hiding from Nazi

:15:53. > :15:55.soldiers. A strangely eerie and at the spirit space. Listen to the

:15:56. > :16:01.sounds, the church bells, the birds which are mentioned a lot in the

:16:02. > :16:05.diary. These sounds became part of the soundscape of the piece. It is

:16:06. > :16:09.Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday and St Martin`in`the`Fields church is

:16:10. > :16:15.preparing for a performance of Annelies. It is a fitting tribute to

:16:16. > :16:23.all of those Anne Frank has come to represent. Geraldine Auerbach from

:16:24. > :16:30.the Jewish Music Institute says it is significant to Holocaust victims.

:16:31. > :16:33.It is wonderful that it has been nominated for a Grammy becatse it

:16:34. > :16:39.gives us some arch pleasure and pride that this piece is st`nding up

:16:40. > :16:40.on its own feet across the world. The Grammy awards take placd in LA

:16:41. > :17:03.on Sunday. A beautiful piece of music. Lizzy

:17:04. > :17:10.Yarnold will compete as the reigning skeleton champion.

:17:11. > :17:19.It was the first time this season she has not finished in the top

:17:20. > :17:24.three but it was enough to pualify. The smile said it all. For Lizzy

:17:25. > :17:26.Yarnold this was mission accomplished. Three months of

:17:27. > :17:35.intense competition ended whth her crowned as World Cup champion. It is

:17:36. > :17:44.amazing to say I am overall World Cup champion. It is an amazhng

:17:45. > :17:48.achievement I have dreamt of. With Olympic selection secured e`rlier in

:17:49. > :17:53.the week Lizzy Yarnold only needed to complete today's raced to ensure

:17:54. > :17:56.she maintained her position as world number one and again she had the

:17:57. > :18:03.support of family and friends from Kent. I can't believe it. I felt

:18:04. > :18:09.quite to fill seeing the fl`g and her on the podium. This is one she

:18:10. > :18:14.really really wanted. It shows she is consistent and can slide in

:18:15. > :18:19.Europe, North America. This is what she really really wanted. For Lizzy

:18:20. > :18:26.and her rivals, the long se`son still has one very important

:18:27. > :18:31.contest. Lizzy and her family celebrating. There will be plenty

:18:32. > :18:39.more celebrations if she can finish with a gold in Sochi. The ndxt few

:18:40. > :18:43.weeks `` the last few weeks may have been difficult for Lizzy but she

:18:44. > :18:52.could hardly set off for Sochi in better shape.

:18:53. > :18:55.Football now, and it is FA Cup fourth round weekend. Brighton are

:18:56. > :18:58.away to League One side Port Vale tomorrow afternoon. Winger Will

:18:59. > :19:02.Buckley could be in line for a return to the side, having spent the

:19:03. > :19:04.last month out with a hamstring injury.

:19:05. > :19:08.Charlton are on the roads in the FA Cup for the second time in ` week.

:19:09. > :19:11.After avoiding an upset in ` third round replay at Oxford Unitdd on

:19:12. > :19:14.Tuesday, a trip to fellow Championship side Huddersfidld Town

:19:15. > :19:17.is the reward in round four. Gillingham face one of their

:19:18. > :19:23.toughest tests of the season in League One tonight. They ard away to

:19:24. > :19:26.Brentford. Crawley Town will be looking to avenge their defdat to

:19:27. > :19:29.Rotherham earlier in the se`son when they travel to Yorkshire tolorrow.

:19:30. > :19:33.She is small, messy and grulpy, and she is fast becoming a popular local

:19:34. > :19:36.attraction. A female pig, n`med Porrick, has been adopted bx a group

:19:37. > :19:40.of Sean Cliff locals after she was abandoned in a nearby field, and she

:19:41. > :19:43.is getting plenty of visitors. `` Shorncliffe.

:19:44. > :19:46.It is thought she was left behind because she was proving tricky to

:19:47. > :19:49.catch. Now she seems quite `t home, after residents build her a

:19:50. > :19:53.makeshift shelter and have started feeding her scraps of food. We sent

:19:54. > :19:58.Victoria Holland to bring home the bacon.

:19:59. > :20:03.As happy as a pig in muck. This is Porrick and she is turning hnto a

:20:04. > :20:07.local celebrity. When residdnts realised she had been left hn this

:20:08. > :20:12.field they adopted her and dven built a temporary home. It hs not a

:20:13. > :20:21.desirable residence as such but it keeps the weather off. The first

:20:22. > :20:25.time I saw her she was covered in Mark and laying down with a bit of

:20:26. > :20:30.hay over her. But now the local people bring her scraps and even buy

:20:31. > :20:35.food for her. Porrick has bden living on her round for a fdw

:20:36. > :20:39.months. Originally there was a whole drove of pigs on this land but they

:20:40. > :20:44.were moved off because residents said many of them kept escaping It

:20:45. > :20:51.is thought the Porrick is a German micro pig but unlike most phgs, she

:20:52. > :20:56.loves eating. The majority of the people down the road enjoy feeding

:20:57. > :21:05.her. A couple come virtuallx every day, an old couple, and thex sit

:21:06. > :21:09.there and watch Porrick for hours. Porrick seems quite settled, so much

:21:10. > :21:16.so that she did not seem to want to come out much. She is quite shy

:21:17. > :21:23.around people and she will bark like a dog if she doesn't like them, but

:21:24. > :21:28.otherwise she just eats the food and wanders around. Thanks to the

:21:29. > :21:33.kindness of the locals, Porrick has become a popular and somewh`t porky

:21:34. > :21:37.pig. We are going to the weather in a few

:21:38. > :21:41.moments but before that, it is exactly a month on from the

:21:42. > :21:46.devastating floods that hit the South East. Residents from Xalding

:21:47. > :21:55.are calling for ?50 million to protect the area from futurd

:21:56. > :22:04.flooding. The River Medway burst its Hanks,

:22:05. > :22:08.flooding Tonbridge, and hundreds of people were stranded at Gatwick

:22:09. > :22:21.Olly and Maidstone were othdr areas badly affected. `` holy `` Horley.

:22:22. > :22:23.A month after Christmas and people's saturated and cont`minated

:22:24. > :22:31.belongings are still being disposed of. In this road in Tonbridge there

:22:32. > :22:38.are more builders than residents. There were no sandbags, no help

:22:39. > :22:44.whatsoever. There was no warning, to bring your stuff upstairs or

:22:45. > :22:49.whatever. The flooding in Tonbridge, the worst since 1968, after which

:22:50. > :22:53.the flood barrier was dulled to protect the town. It protected many

:22:54. > :23:00.homes and the council said ht had its best. We did the best wd could

:23:01. > :23:06.do at the time. We can alwaxs improve and one of the really good

:23:07. > :23:10.things is that staff involvdd have all sent me ideas about things they

:23:11. > :23:22.perhaps could do a bit diffdrently. But so much rain fell that flooding

:23:23. > :23:27.was inevitable. You can see the rainfall as the black bars, causing

:23:28. > :23:33.the River levels to rise, this blue line. Before the River levels had a

:23:34. > :23:36.chance to subside, a great deal more rain fell on the night before

:23:37. > :23:44.Christmas eve, giving us thd levels we saw in Yalding. In Yalding, more

:23:45. > :23:50.homes were devastated even then in 2000 but today funding has been

:23:51. > :23:56.promised into flood defences for the village and others on the Rhver

:23:57. > :24:05.belt. Yalding lies at the confluence of the two rivers. The proposal is

:24:06. > :24:12.to put something down streal on the belt so that we can have thd ability

:24:13. > :24:17.to hold the water back. We learn from every flood and every flood is

:24:18. > :24:21.slightly different. We revidwed the computer models, review the

:24:22. > :24:26.predictions. We can also look at the previous schemes we were looking to

:24:27. > :24:30.progress and some of those could well go forward in the future. Over

:24:31. > :24:34.the following weeks and months of the events of Christmas will be

:24:35. > :24:43.dissected to try to make thhngs better next time.

:24:44. > :24:44.Anybody living in those are`s will be deeply concerned about the

:24:45. > :24:58.weather. We know there is more heavy `` more heavy rain on the w`y over

:24:59. > :25:03.the weekend. Yes, Saturday looks to be staying

:25:04. > :25:09.fairly dry, one or two blustery showers, but it is Sunday wd are

:25:10. > :25:13.really concerned about. We dxpect about 20 millimetres of rainfall and

:25:14. > :25:19.gale force winds along the south coast. Earlier there was rahn for

:25:20. > :25:24.the South West but must've ht `` much of it heated out so actually

:25:25. > :25:29.just lots of cloud cover today. Temperature is still pretty cool,

:25:30. > :25:35.highs of seven or eight degrees The win is actually fairly light, ten to

:25:36. > :25:41.15 mph, but it will not stax settled as we go into tonight. This band of

:25:42. > :25:43.rain, not particularly heavx, but persistent tonight, spreading

:25:44. > :25:50.eastwards. The writ `` the wind is picking up again as well. As we go

:25:51. > :25:55.through tonight, all of us seeing some rainfall at one point or

:25:56. > :25:58.another and a cloudy, grey start to Saturday. Temperatures hardly

:25:59. > :26:04.changing from their daytime values, lows of five or six. Cloudy but mild

:26:05. > :26:09.as we start the day on Saturday but shaping up to be witty decent. Some

:26:10. > :26:17.sunshine in the afternoon. `` pretty decent. For the most part wd should

:26:18. > :26:23.stay dry. Temperatures stayhng in single figures, highs of seven or

:26:24. > :26:27.eight, but along the coast just about holding up in double figures.

:26:28. > :26:31.Some blustery and cool showdrs for the first part of Saturday dvening,

:26:32. > :26:36.possibly some hail with that. Actually quite a cold night as we go

:26:37. > :26:43.into Sunday, Tebbit is down to two or three. You might see a touch of

:26:44. > :26:51.Frost in more rural spots. `` temperatures down to two or three.

:26:52. > :26:57.We expect ten to 20 millimetres of rain on Sunday and that comds hand

:26:58. > :27:02.in hand with gale force winds. All of us seeing a very wet and windy

:27:03. > :27:09.pictures, highs of eight or nine degrees. As we go into the new week

:27:10. > :27:17.we expect a bit of a cold snap, temperatures around four or five for

:27:18. > :27:21.many of us. It is going to be staying breezy and unsettled as we

:27:22. > :27:24.head through the week. Over the weekend, Saturday at least looks

:27:25. > :27:27.mostly settled, some sunshine during the afternoon, but turning very wet

:27:28. > :27:45.and windy into Sunday. Sleet on Monday. Cold and wdt, what

:27:46. > :27:47.a combination. I will see you next week. Goodbye.
