:00:00. > :00:08.Welcome to South East Today, I'm Polly Evans. And I'm Rob Smhth.

:00:09. > :00:12.Tonight's top stories. Is this the return of the IRA? Irish

:00:13. > :00:17.terrorists claim they sent explosives to army offices hn Kent

:00:18. > :00:19.and Sussex. We'll be live in Chatham with the

:00:20. > :00:22.details. Warnings that "hundreds" of Syrian

:00:23. > :00:27.refugees are making their w`y to calais with the intention of coming

:00:28. > :00:29.to Kent. Also in tonight's programme:

:00:30. > :00:32.Disruption ` and dissatisfaction ` for Brighton to London commtters as

:00:33. > :00:36.flooding closes a stretch of the line.

:00:37. > :00:39.Lucky to be alive ` a Kent businessman surveys the wreckage

:00:40. > :00:47.after a building collapses onto his garage in the storms.

:00:48. > :00:50.And a golden postbox for Lizzy ` calls for Winter Olympian Lhzzy

:00:51. > :00:57.Yarnold to be celebrated in her Kent home town like the summer champions.

:00:58. > :01:10.We'll be speaking to Lizzy's parents live in the studio.

:01:11. > :01:15.Good evening. A group calling itself the IRA has claimed responshbility

:01:16. > :01:20.for suspicious packages sent to seven Army Recruitment centres

:01:21. > :01:23.across the country. Bomb disposal experts were forced to cordon off

:01:24. > :01:28.parts of Canterbury and Brighton city centres last Thursday. And last

:01:29. > :01:31.Tuesday what was described `s a "small but viable explosive" was

:01:32. > :01:39.sent to an Army Recruitment office in Chatham. Mark Norman is hn the

:01:40. > :01:41.town for us ` detectives sax terrorists used a recognised

:01:42. > :01:51.codeword to claim responsibhlity, Mark. Yes, colleagues in Belfast

:01:52. > :01:57.tell me it is the work of the new IRA, a splinter of the real IRA

:01:58. > :02:03.They say they are a threat to life and property in Northern Irdland and

:02:04. > :02:08.less so in the UK. The scend last week as the IRA brought fear and

:02:09. > :02:13.confusion to towns and citids. Last cheese Day, suspect packages were

:02:14. > :02:18.found at Army careers officds in chats and Reading. The following day

:02:19. > :02:24.in Aldershot and four devicds were found in Brighton, Canterbury,

:02:25. > :02:29.Oxford and Slough. In a statement, a group calling itself the IR@ claimed

:02:30. > :02:37.responsibility saying attacks will continue when and where the IRA see

:02:38. > :02:42.fit. They do not want to be seen to be `` grabbing attention. There was

:02:43. > :02:54.a comment from number time `` number ten. During the 1980s and 90s, Kent

:02:55. > :02:59.and Sussex experienced some of the worst IRA atrocities. In 1984, the

:03:00. > :03:03.grand hotel in Brighton was bombed during the Conservative Party

:03:04. > :03:12.conference, five people died. Five years later, the Royal Marines were

:03:13. > :03:16.attacked and 11 lost their lives. The Conservative MP for Eastbourne

:03:17. > :03:22.was assassinated by the IRA in 990 when a car bomb exploded outside his

:03:23. > :03:25.home. A parcel sent to recrtiting offices last week follows a series

:03:26. > :03:30.of incidents in Northern Irdland last year. The fact they have

:03:31. > :03:34.targeted England in this wax suggests they're not having a great

:03:35. > :03:39.deal of success in Northern Ireland where there is more securitx and it

:03:40. > :03:43.seems to have been an easy target. It is not difficult to put something

:03:44. > :03:50.in the post. It is more difficult to drive a car bomb somewhere or to

:03:51. > :03:54.leave something on a person. The devices pose a low`level threat and

:03:55. > :04:00.they're unlikely to cause significant harm but they h`ve

:04:01. > :04:05.advised people to remain vigilant. And the phrase vigilant comds from

:04:06. > :04:10.the police who said the new IRA in Ireland have killed a prison officer

:04:11. > :04:13.so they do pose a real thre`t in Northern Ireland or the expdrts say

:04:14. > :04:21.this isn't the start of the new campaign like in the 1980s `nd 0s.

:04:22. > :04:25.The Deputy Mayor of Calais says hundreds of Syrians are heading to

:04:26. > :04:27.the town with the intention of crossing the Channel into Dover

:04:28. > :04:31.It's estimated that there are already up to 500 migrants sleeping

:04:32. > :04:34.rough at the French port. Kdnt MP Mark Reckless says they havd no need

:04:35. > :04:38.to travel here, and should be looking to claim asylum in the first

:04:39. > :04:41.safe country they came to. Charities in Calais say living condithons are

:04:42. > :04:48.worsening for the migrants. Our Special Correspondent Colin Campbell

:04:49. > :04:53.has our exclusive report. G`thering at Calais, it is another st`ging

:04:54. > :05:00.post for migrants desperate to reach the UK.

:05:01. > :05:08.Will you get to England? Yes. Positive? 90%. 90% I will gdt

:05:09. > :05:16.there. Migrants are sleeping rush `` rough across the town. Many

:05:17. > :05:21.Eritreans live here. I want to hide myself from the security. This man

:05:22. > :05:29.told me migrants are successfully making it to the UK. One of our

:05:30. > :05:35.friends were successful. How do you know? After he reached Engl`nd he

:05:36. > :05:41.called us. It is 15 years shnce the Red Cross opened the centre

:05:42. > :05:45.providing accommodation for hundreds of would`be asylum seekers. It was

:05:46. > :05:49.closed in 2002 after the Brhtish Government raised concerns ht was a

:05:50. > :05:55.magnet for illegal immigrants. A sprawling camp called the jtngle

:05:56. > :06:00.sprung up at French police closed it in 2009 making 300 arrests. The

:06:01. > :06:05.jungle was demolished a few years ago but new makeshift camps have

:06:06. > :06:10.established. This one is in the heart of Calais. Some estim`te that

:06:11. > :06:14.are between five and 600 migrants in the French town waiting to get to

:06:15. > :06:19.England. Mohammad left Syri` after his home was bombed. Through a

:06:20. > :06:24.translator he told me he believes England can offer him a better life.

:06:25. > :06:29.The local authorities in Calais fear many more Syrians are on thdir way.

:06:30. > :06:35.We don't have exact numbers, we can't, it is so difficult btt we

:06:36. > :06:39.expect to 300 more. I filmed these pictures five years ago, thhs is how

:06:40. > :06:46.migrants continue to try to get to England, it is not risk`fred. Last

:06:47. > :06:58.week one from Pakistan was killed and the other from Eritrea died Two

:06:59. > :07:01.people died. If we can make it clear border controls are tight that they

:07:02. > :07:05.do not have a realistic chance of getting to Britain then sooner or

:07:06. > :07:10.later this will stop. A derdlict shack that lets in the rain,

:07:11. > :07:18.sleeping quarters for up to 20 Afghans. How often are you trying to

:07:19. > :07:22.get to England? How often? Dvery night. With the new wave of migrants

:07:23. > :07:27.on the way, conditions here are expected to deteriorate. Colin's

:07:28. > :07:31.spent the day in Calais, and joins us live now back in Dover. Colin

:07:32. > :07:37.this problem has been going on for over ten years now ` but we're still

:07:38. > :07:42.no nearer a political soluthon? Politicians have been hagglhng over

:07:43. > :07:46.the Calais migrant issue for years, it will rise up the politic`l agenda

:07:47. > :07:51.as we get closer to the gendral election. I have been back `nd forth

:07:52. > :07:55.to Calais many times and it is the same problems that exist, mhgrants

:07:56. > :07:59.ten Calais, they live in appalling conditions and keep trying to make

:08:00. > :08:02.their way to the UK. The Frdnch authorities want the British

:08:03. > :08:06.Government to shoulder more of the cost but the British Governlent say

:08:07. > :08:11.it is happening over there hn France on French soil so it is a British

:08:12. > :08:15.problem. The Home Office saxs if migrants want protection thdy should

:08:16. > :08:19.claim asylum in the first country where they arrive.

:08:20. > :08:22.In a moment: After 56 days of wrangling with insurers ` a huge

:08:23. > :08:37.tree blown onto a Kent housd in the Christmas storms is finally removed.

:08:38. > :08:42.Flooding has closed a stretch of one of the busiest commuter routes in

:08:43. > :08:44.the country, leading to another day of delays and disruption for

:08:45. > :08:47.passengers travelling betwedn Brighton and London. They'vd been

:08:48. > :08:50.forced to use replacement bts services between Brighton and

:08:51. > :08:53.Hassocks, because of water levels in the Patcham tunnel, or take a much

:08:54. > :08:57.longer rail route to and from London via Lewes. It comes on the day a new

:08:58. > :09:00.survey suggests commuters in Kent and Sussex have some of the lowest

:09:01. > :09:07.passenger satisfaction rates in the country. Ian Palmer joins us from

:09:08. > :09:15.Brighton Station. How have passengers there been coping? They

:09:16. > :09:19.have been incredibly stoic this evening but they have been chastened

:09:20. > :09:24.by the fact network rail have been working in a Tamil all day `nd have

:09:25. > :09:30.diverted water away from thd tracks and signalling equipment `` eighth

:09:31. > :09:36.on all. They expected to be open tomorrow. People travelling tonight

:09:37. > :09:40.are being asked check `` a tunnel. At Brighton station it was ` bad

:09:41. > :09:46.start the week. The commuters heading into London. It would have

:09:47. > :09:52.been nice to have known beforehand. I can't get on the train. There is

:09:53. > :09:56.nothing else they can do. It is hassle. Disruption to rail services

:09:57. > :10:00.has been caused by flood water inside the tunnel. Water levels are

:10:01. > :10:06.so high the main route north out of Brighton is hazardous. Environment

:10:07. > :10:12.Agency has been. Water into drains the coast. After being battdred by

:10:13. > :10:17.storms, train operating companies are now being hit by a damnhng

:10:18. > :10:24.report. The survey conducted three months ago spoke to 7000

:10:25. > :10:30.travellers, Southern trains are ranked 13th out of 19 in thd country

:10:31. > :10:37.for customer satisfaction. First Capital Connect 17th with 40% and

:10:38. > :10:42.southeastern rock bottom with 4 %. The lowest customer satisfaction

:10:43. > :10:45.rating in the country. We asked customers their overall sathsfaction

:10:46. > :10:49.with their rail service and whether they were likely to recommend them

:10:50. > :10:56.to a friend. Unfortunately we found they wouldn't. I asked the transport

:10:57. > :11:01.minister to chair `` share ly commute. I am sure he will find it

:11:02. > :11:09.educational. The trains in Brighton and the south`east are not good and

:11:10. > :11:14.can be improved. They do not care about passengers, they just care

:11:15. > :11:20.about people who are not buxing tickets. Prices go up but ctstomer

:11:21. > :11:26.service and comfort doesn't. It is OK, the seats are an issue. It is

:11:27. > :11:32.overcrowded. If you have to take public transport, what can xou do?

:11:33. > :11:40.Network rail cannot be blamdd for the weather but travellers `re tired

:11:41. > :11:44.of excuses. In a statement, South`eastern Trains says it is

:11:45. > :11:51.disappointed by the results of the survey, it says it prefers to look

:11:52. > :11:56.at the recent study from thd passenger survey which found 90 of

:11:57. > :12:02.people travelling on South`dastern Trains were satisfied. A wolan who

:12:03. > :12:05.was stabbed to death by her estranged husband in front of their

:12:06. > :12:09.two young children was "unr`velling in fear" at what he may do to her,

:12:10. > :12:11.her mother has told an inqudst. Hajrudin Hasanovic from Dovdr,

:12:12. > :12:15.murdered his wife Cassandra outside her mother's house in 2008, as she

:12:16. > :12:18.was attempting to escape to a woman's refuge. He was jaildd for

:12:19. > :12:21.life at Lewes Crown Court the following year. The inquest in

:12:22. > :12:27.Chichester is scheduled to last for two weeks. Detectives trying to

:12:28. > :12:30.identify a badly burned bodx found in a ravine in Hastings sevdnteen

:12:31. > :12:34.years ago have issued a new artist's impression.

:12:35. > :12:36.It's thought the man was in his twenties. Police say they don't

:12:37. > :12:43.believe his death was suspicious, but they'd like to identify him in

:12:44. > :12:47.order to inform his next of kin Our reporter Helen Drew joins us

:12:48. > :12:56.from Hastings. What more is known about this man, Helen? We know he

:12:57. > :13:03.was about five foot ten and a stocky build. When found, was wearhng Doc

:13:04. > :13:10.Martens boots and a watch m`de by a Hong Kong brand. He had ?270 in cash

:13:11. > :13:14.on him. Police have not tre`ted this as suspicious, they believe he took

:13:15. > :13:18.his own life but they are rdally keen to try to find some closure for

:13:19. > :13:25.any relatives who might havd had. If anyone recognises this new `rtist

:13:26. > :13:30.impression, the advice is to get in touch with the missing Persons

:13:31. > :13:34.bureau. A huge tree that fell onto ` house

:13:35. > :13:37.in Kent as fierce storms battered the South East on Christmas Eve has

:13:38. > :13:40.finally been removed ` some 56 days on. It follows weeks of argtment

:13:41. > :13:43.between insurers over who should foot the bill to remove the

:13:44. > :13:46.leylandii tree in Walderslade, near Chatham. Simon Jones has thd

:13:47. > :13:54.details. This tree has cast a shadow over her

:13:55. > :13:58.life for 56 days. Today, shd finally saw it removed after initially being

:13:59. > :14:02.told because it landed on hdr house, even though it came from a

:14:03. > :14:10.neighbour's garden, her landlord would have to fit the bill. I did

:14:11. > :14:16.get upset. I wasn't expecting so much to fall off the house. Relief

:14:17. > :14:21.now it has gone and angry at how long it has taken and glad ht isn't

:14:22. > :14:27.raining. This was the start of the operation, a huge task that is

:14:28. > :14:30.taking a huge amount of timd. The tree has been removed in three

:14:31. > :14:37.separate parts, it fell frol a neighbours garden onto the houses

:14:38. > :14:44.behind me but there was a rdal wrangle over who should foot the

:14:45. > :14:50.bill to finally get it moved. In the end, it was decided the cost would

:14:51. > :14:54.be shared between the three insurers. The trouble is if you

:14:55. > :14:59.cannot get anybody down herd, nobody will do it. The amount of hours I

:15:00. > :15:05.have tried to spend to get people down here, you would not believe. It

:15:06. > :15:10.cost ?2500 to get the tree removed with more repairs needed. It is a

:15:11. > :15:16.big relief, there is light `t the end of the tunnel. As the tree is

:15:17. > :15:23.coming off the property, we are seeing the extent of the dalage It

:15:24. > :15:30.is worrying. While it is assessed, they say they have finally got rid

:15:31. > :15:36.of their unwanted Christmas visitor. There are many people who h`ve been

:15:37. > :15:41.affected by the storms and workers at a garage in Maidstone Al`s it is

:15:42. > :15:47.lucky no one was killed aftdr the side of the building collapsed

:15:48. > :15:50.filling their workshop with rubble. The dramatic collapse was c`pture by

:15:51. > :15:52.CCTV cameras during stormy weather on Friday night. Jane Witherspoon

:15:53. > :15:55.has the details. The dramatic collapse was capture by CCTV cameras

:15:56. > :15:58.during stormy weather on Frhday night. The moment a garage was

:15:59. > :16:02.nearly wiped out. Debris cr`shes from the ceiling as a house caved

:16:03. > :16:08.in. Staff so they are lucky they left work when it happened last

:16:09. > :16:13.Friday. We left this place `t 6pm, the incident happened at five

:16:14. > :16:18.minutes past ten. We would have been killed, no doubt. I am happx to

:16:19. > :16:25.still be here talking to yot. Rubble and dust cover the workshop. Halfway

:16:26. > :16:29.house collapsing into the workshop has caused the business to come to a

:16:30. > :16:36.halt. The residents have bedn evacuated for the time being, we are

:16:37. > :16:40.waiting for the insurance to come out and attend to the situation

:16:41. > :16:47.Other than that, we are awahting further action. He is unsurd when he

:16:48. > :16:59.will be open again, there w`s a big clearer job that needs doing in the

:17:00. > :17:05.meantime. It is a quarter to seven. This is our top story tonight: A

:17:06. > :17:08.group calling itself the IR@ has claimed responsibility for

:17:09. > :17:10.suspicious packages sent to Army Careers Offices in Canterbury

:17:11. > :17:13.Brighton and Chatham last wdek. After the discovery of what have

:17:14. > :17:16.been described as "small but viable explosive" devices, staff at the

:17:17. > :17:18.Royal Mail and all military bases have been warned to stay "extra

:17:19. > :17:23.vigilant". Also in tonight's programme: Lizzy

:17:24. > :17:26.Yarnold is Olympic champion She's a gold medal winner, but

:17:27. > :17:33.should Kent Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold be celebrated in her home

:17:34. > :17:38.town with a golden postbox? And after a dry start, we are sdeing

:17:39. > :17:47.some rain but it is calmer than last week. Join me later for the details.

:17:48. > :17:50.A man who says he was left feeling humiliated at a Kent job centre

:17:51. > :17:54.because he is HIV positive, is launching a training scheme to teach

:17:55. > :17:58.people about the condition ` and how to deal with people who havd it We

:17:59. > :18:02.featured Jayce Carberry's story a year ago ` when his ordeal led to an

:18:03. > :18:07.apology from staff at Maidstone job centre, and a commitment to improve

:18:08. > :18:14.staff training. It's estimated that more than 100,000 people living with

:18:15. > :18:18.HIV in the UK. As many as 22,00 of them are undiagnosed ` meanhng they

:18:19. > :18:22.don't know they have been infected. And in 2012, 490 people with the

:18:23. > :18:33.condition died in this country. Mr Carberry's been speaking to Sara

:18:34. > :18:39.Smith for tonight's Story Update. Final preparations for the launch of

:18:40. > :18:45.a course Jayce Carberry has developed to tackle the stigma that

:18:46. > :18:49.he has faced. HIV is differdnt from when it started and it's important

:18:50. > :18:55.for people to know what has changed, what is available and how at risk

:18:56. > :18:59.people are because it is th`t fear that causes stigma and if wd can

:19:00. > :19:05.teach people and educate people we remove the fear. It was a ydar ago

:19:06. > :19:08.he went into the job centre in Maidstone and was told he would have

:19:09. > :19:15.to see a disability adviser and may need to declare his status to

:19:16. > :19:20.everyone he came into contact with. It upset him for a long timd because

:19:21. > :19:28.he was put in that situation. He is honest and they made him fedl small.

:19:29. > :19:34.This video will launch the new course with facts and figurds

:19:35. > :19:39.telling the story of HIV ovdr the years. The job centre has shnce

:19:40. > :19:43.apologised to Jayce Carberrx and taken action on training. Hhs assets

:19:44. > :19:49.to turn such a difficult tile into something which could end up helping

:19:50. > :19:52.others has not gone unnoticdd. It is fantastic somebody is going out

:19:53. > :19:57.there, making sure people are educated and know where thex stand

:19:58. > :20:02.and know what they need to do and people need to make a calculated

:20:03. > :20:05.decision about whether to or not to tell anybody. To come from the

:20:06. > :20:10.negative situation and come into this a year later with something

:20:11. > :20:17.positive going forward and tse my experience for a positive thing it

:20:18. > :20:22.is rewarding. His MP took up the case at the time. Now he pl`ns to go

:20:23. > :20:23.to as many workplaces, schools and colleges as possible to share his

:20:24. > :20:35.message. A campaign's been launched to honour

:20:36. > :20:39.Britain's latest Olympic Gold Medallist Lizzy Yarnold with a

:20:40. > :20:43.golden post box in her home town of West Kingsdown, in Kent. Thd Royal

:20:44. > :20:46.Mail created 47 golden post boxes to commemorate the success of our

:20:47. > :20:53.Olympic Champions at the London 2012 games. But they say that was a

:20:54. > :20:58.one`off and there are no pl`ns to honour Winter Olympic medal winners

:20:59. > :21:01.in Sochi in a similar way. Hn a moment we'll be speaking live to

:21:02. > :21:07.Lizzy Yarnold's parents herd in the studio. But first, this report from

:21:08. > :21:12.Neil Bell. Lizzy Yarnold's achievement has been

:21:13. > :21:17.the undisputed highlight of the Winter Olympics so far. Our family

:21:18. > :21:22.and friends at home are still celebrating. Their wish is to see

:21:23. > :21:26.how receive the same recognhtion as the heroes of 2012 like Andx Murray

:21:27. > :21:32.whose local postbox was givdn a golden make over. I think wd

:21:33. > :21:37.believed it was our way of recognising the amazing success so
