:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith.

:00:07. > :00:10.And I'm Polly Evans. Tonight's top stories.

:00:11. > :00:15.Exclusive footage of the convoy that a Sussex man travelled with before

:00:16. > :00:18.blowing himself up at a Syrhan jail. Was flood prevention work in Yalding

:00:19. > :00:22.scrapped two years ago becatse of budget cuts? Residents get ` chance

:00:23. > :00:26.to grill a government minister. We'll have the latest live from the

:00:27. > :00:29.Kent village. Also in tonight's programme. The

:00:30. > :00:34.Sussex fraudsters jailed ovdr a multi`million pounds bogus jewellery

:00:35. > :00:38.heist in the Caribbean. Rumours of his death have bden

:00:39. > :00:41.greatly exaggerated. The Sussex man who returned from holiday to find

:00:42. > :00:48.everyone at home thought he had died. They came out from thd office

:00:49. > :00:53.and said to me, you're supposed to be dead. That is when I took it

:00:54. > :00:56.seriously, that it wasn't a joke. High fashion influenced by high

:00:57. > :00:58.minds, the new collection inspired by the Sussex country home of the

:00:59. > :01:12.Bloomsbury Group. Good evening. BBC South East Today

:01:13. > :01:16.has uncovered video of a ch`rity convoy headed for Syria that was

:01:17. > :01:20.used as cover by the Sussex man believed to be the first Brhton to

:01:21. > :01:23.carry out a suicide bombing in the country. Abdul Waheed Majeed, a

:01:24. > :01:28.father of three from Crawlex apparently drove a lorry packed with

:01:29. > :01:31.explosives into a jail in Aleppo. The emergence of the video comes as

:01:32. > :01:34.the British government says the country faces a major securhty

:01:35. > :01:40.concern from people who travel to Syria and end`up being radicalised.

:01:41. > :01:50.Our news correspondent Mark Norman has this exclusive report. `` and

:01:51. > :01:56.end up. The first pictures of the convoy leaving for Syria. Wd now

:01:57. > :01:59.know Abdul Waheed Majeed was a volunteer on this convoy. Hd was

:02:00. > :02:04.using the trip to get to Syria where he was to become the first British

:02:05. > :02:09.man to carry out a suicide bombing. The trip was organised by a

:02:10. > :02:14.Birmingham charity. It's not clear at this stage the role the charity

:02:15. > :02:20.played. However, a key disthnction must be made between giving

:02:21. > :02:24.humanitarian aid and fighting in a war is on for an ideological aim,

:02:25. > :02:31.alongside terrorist organis`tions. The convoy left in July last year,

:02:32. > :02:33.almost 150 volunteers, dozens of vehicles all organised by Mtslim

:02:34. > :02:38.charities across the countrx. It's made its way through Europe finally

:02:39. > :02:43.arriving at the Turkish border with Syria almost three weeks later when

:02:44. > :02:46.they began distributing aid. On the convoy returned home, Abdul Waheed

:02:47. > :02:50.Majeed stayed in serious sending home pictures of himself with

:02:51. > :02:54.refugee children. Last week, dramatic footage emerged of him

:02:55. > :03:06.before an apparent suicide lission driving a truck full of explosives

:03:07. > :03:09.into a prison wall in Aleppo. The charity have made some dram`tic

:03:10. > :03:13.appeals for help including this one filmed by the boss of the charity

:03:14. > :03:19.late at night in a refugee camp in Syria. Our brothers and sisters are

:03:20. > :03:22.dying, take this matter serhously. In the last hour, the charity have

:03:23. > :03:25.claimed that Abdul Waheed M`jeed didn't complete the journey into

:03:26. > :03:29.Turkey and that this inform`tion has been passed on to the relev`nt

:03:30. > :03:36.authorities. Mark Norman is with us. Our smaller

:03:37. > :03:40.charities more prone to being used by extremists? That is exactly what

:03:41. > :03:46.the Red Cross have been telling us, telling us larger organisathons can

:03:47. > :03:51.deliver smaller scale `` can deliver the funds. Interesting the charity

:03:52. > :03:54.and the mosques in Crawley `re telling us today the day won't be

:03:55. > :04:00.organising any more convoy hs all funding any more convoys following

:04:01. > :04:03.Foreign Office advice. But hf the government think they have ` major

:04:04. > :04:07.security concern, how did they not spot this man leaving on an eight

:04:08. > :04:09.convoy heading to Syria? Th`nk you. A government minister visithng

:04:10. > :04:12.flood`hit Yalding has been confronted by an angry resident

:04:13. > :04:16.demanding to know why it cotld take 20 years to improve flood ddfences

:04:17. > :04:18.in the village. Ericka Oliv`res told the Chief Secretary to the Treasury

:04:19. > :04:23.Danny Alexander that getting insurance for properties is proving

:04:24. > :04:28.impossible. He denied that work on flood defences had been scr`pped due

:04:29. > :04:33.to government cuts. Simon Jones is in Yalding. What did Danny @lexander

:04:34. > :04:42.have to say to the residents of Yalding? I think anyone hophng he

:04:43. > :04:47.was going to arrive with sackloads of cash would have been

:04:48. > :04:50.disappointed. But I think f`cing criticism, the government is

:04:51. > :04:55.increasingly seen the need to be out and about in communities th`t have

:04:56. > :05:12.been hearted. This post offhce was under over Christmas.

:05:13. > :05:17.We've been told it will takd 20 years. What good is it doing us

:05:18. > :05:23.This resident told the minister she simply wants the place to stop the

:05:24. > :05:28.suffering. I can't afford to go to the rest run. It has a knock`on

:05:29. > :05:33.effect. We can't go on and spend money because we've got to replace

:05:34. > :05:39.everything. This was how many experienced Christmas. A fedling

:05:40. > :05:45.that this place was abandondd. It was a mess. One of the placds

:05:46. > :05:52.flooded was the local post office. Well, I am disappointed. Thdy have

:05:53. > :06:02.said they will put money in, no object, but no specifics. They going

:06:03. > :06:13.to pay for the defences? Whdn we asked for help, we got no hdlp. We

:06:14. > :06:18.were told to go and buy sandbags. Mr denied that ?200,000 worth of

:06:19. > :06:23.defence work that should have been implement between 2011`2013 was

:06:24. > :06:29.scrapped due to government cuts `` the minister denied. There hs a lot

:06:30. > :06:33.of money set aside for new flood defences of precisely the sort the

:06:34. > :06:37.Environment Agency are workhng on. There is no treasury barrier in

:06:38. > :06:41.regards getting that money to these flood defences. And I have ` close

:06:42. > :06:45.personal interest in these schemes having her for myself the bdnefit

:06:46. > :06:53.they would bring to this colmunity. But Erica still needs convincing. As

:06:54. > :06:57.I told him, we were told it was going to cost millions of pounds and

:06:58. > :07:03.it is going to take up to 20 years. What is going to happen in 20

:07:04. > :07:06.years? Until I see it, I'll won t `` I won't believe it. The govdrnment

:07:07. > :07:10.says it is ready to push ahdad for two new schemes for the are` when

:07:11. > :07:14.other organisations contribtte to funding, too.

:07:15. > :07:18.Many residents were keen to tell the minister today how much trotble they

:07:19. > :07:21.are having getting insurancd. There was a meeting today between the

:07:22. > :07:25.government and the insurancd industry. And there will be further

:07:26. > :07:31.meetings in the coming weeks. Tonight, here, residents will get a

:07:32. > :07:35.chance to confront the Environment Agency at a meeting discusshng what

:07:36. > :07:38.happened over Christmas, and concerns that not enough warning was

:07:39. > :07:46.given to people about the scale of events. Coming up, one`week`old and

:07:47. > :07:48.undergoing major heart surgdry, the babies that could be helped by a

:07:49. > :07:56.simple test. A Sussex couple who posed as

:07:57. > :08:00.millionaires and claimed th`t they were robbed at gunpoint at ` luxury

:08:01. > :08:02.resort in Barbados have been jailed. Edward Denney and Tululla S`lvatori

:08:03. > :08:06.from Polgate said designer jewellery worth millions was stolen from their

:08:07. > :08:12.apartment at the exclusive Sandy Lane resort. The couple told police

:08:13. > :08:16.that the haul included a ?7 million engagement ring and a platinum

:08:17. > :08:20.necklace worth nearly ?2 million. But officers became suspicious later

:08:21. > :08:30.after Salvatori tried to hire a car with a bounced cheque. Rebecca

:08:31. > :08:34.Williams has more. They lied saying masked men had stolen around ?1

:08:35. > :08:37.million worth of goods from their rented home in Barbados. Now both

:08:38. > :08:40.Edward Denney and his partndr Tululla Salvatori who are originally

:08:41. > :08:44.from Sussex have been jailed. I think the sentence is justified The

:08:45. > :08:47.police have a job to do, it's to prevent and detect crime. There were

:08:48. > :08:51.stopped from doing that bec`use this couple appear to be involved in some

:08:52. > :08:54.sort of fraud or attempt to take money. And that distracted the

:08:55. > :08:57.police from their core responsibilities. In this country

:08:58. > :08:59.for a matter of this sort, custody will inevitably follow. The two

:09:00. > :09:03.British nationals accused of falsely reporting a multi`million dollar

:09:04. > :09:07.armed robbery... The news has made headlines across

:09:08. > :09:11.Barbados. The couple claimed they'd had millions of pounds worth of

:09:12. > :09:14.jewellery and cash stolen. Local police became suspicious after a

:09:15. > :09:18.cheque bounced when Salvatori tried to hire a car. The pair latdr

:09:19. > :09:24.pleaded guilty to wasting police time. Both Salvatori and Denney who

:09:25. > :09:28.from Polegate, left East Sussex in May last year. They moved to the

:09:29. > :09:31.luxury Sandy Lane resort in Barbados. A popular destination with

:09:32. > :09:37.celebrities, including Hugh Grant, Tiger Woods, and Simon Cowell. Here

:09:38. > :09:41.in Polegate, people have today spoken of their shock at thd crime

:09:42. > :09:45.committed by Salvatori and her fiance Denney. Each of them

:09:46. > :09:49.sentenced to nine months in prison for wasting police time. Salvatori

:09:50. > :09:57.will serve an extra nine months in a Barbados prison for obtaining

:09:58. > :10:01.services through deception. A stretch of the M2 will be closed

:10:02. > :10:04.overnight tonight and tomorrow for ongoing work to repair a large hole

:10:05. > :10:08.that opened in the central reservation last week. The lotorway

:10:09. > :10:11.will be shut between junctions five and six, Faversham and Sitthngbourne

:10:12. > :10:17.from eight o'clock tonight `nd tomorrow night. It's expectdd to

:10:18. > :10:20.reopen fully on Thursday morning. First Capital Connect, which

:10:21. > :10:24.operates services out of Brhghton, is to carry on running its trains

:10:25. > :10:27.for an extra six months to bridge the gap between the end of hts

:10:28. > :10:31.current contract and the st`rt of a new franchise. A new servicd, called

:10:32. > :10:40.Thameslink, Southern and Grdat Northern, will take over in

:10:41. > :10:43.September. A Tunbridge Wells man who rdturned

:10:44. > :10:47.from holiday to find everyone back home thought he had died saxs the

:10:48. > :10:50.error has cost him thousands. Well`wishers wrote moving tributes

:10:51. > :10:54.to Lloyd Bryan on the internet, when a rumour started that he had died of

:10:55. > :10:57.a heart attack. But the 74`xear`old, who runs a vintage car repahr

:10:58. > :11:01.business in the town, says customers thinking that you're dead isn't good

:11:02. > :11:05.for business. Ellie Price rdports. One of the nicest, most gentine guys

:11:06. > :11:13.you could ever meet. The warm words of a customer when they heard the

:11:14. > :11:18.news that Lloyd Bryan, `` that Lloyd Bryan had been dyed. But reports of

:11:19. > :11:24.his death had been exaggerated. A lot of the traders told me that you

:11:25. > :11:28.are alive. They kept coming up and pinching me. The

:11:29. > :11:31.TIM HENMAN: Does know who started the rumour but months after

:11:32. > :11:34.returning from holiday, thex are having to live with the

:11:35. > :11:40.consequences. My workers or word`of`mouth from these people And

:11:41. > :11:47.quite a few of my customers run up to see if it was true. How luch has

:11:48. > :11:53.it cost you? Roughly about ?200 a week. It was shock at first.

:11:54. > :12:00.Obviously. I was glad that when we heard about it that I knew that we

:12:01. > :12:05.were on holiday together. Btt if we hadn't have been, then it could be

:12:06. > :12:11.devastating. A number of people words devastated when they heard the

:12:12. > :12:15.news. Neither of them use the Internet but it was an online forum

:12:16. > :12:21.where the room and contribute spread. Unfortunately, it is all too

:12:22. > :12:26.common these days. With the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and a pl`tter of

:12:27. > :12:33.the social networks, people can put a lot of information online. A lot

:12:34. > :12:37.of it can be completely madd up lies or malicious fraudsters, or

:12:38. > :12:41.whatever. Unfortunately, people if they see it online, they believe

:12:42. > :12:46.it. If you could speak to customers, what would your lessage

:12:47. > :12:51.be? Comeback. I'm alive! Ellie is in Tunbridge Wells now I

:12:52. > :13:00.understand Mr Bryan is conshdering take some sort of action? Lloyd

:13:01. > :13:03.Bryan and his wife are sure this rumour was started for malicious

:13:04. > :13:06.reasons, somebody trying to damage their business, a business they ve

:13:07. > :13:12.worked so hard for. They told me they will be referring the latter to

:13:13. > :13:16.police. I should also say they said they were grateful to those tributes

:13:17. > :13:19.paid by well`wishers who genuinely thought Lloyd Bryan had died.

:13:20. > :13:23.The mother of a baby who underwent major heart surgery when shd was

:13:24. > :13:26.just a week old says a simple test would have detected her daughter's

:13:27. > :13:29.life threatening condition sooner. Helen Willis from Folkestond was

:13:30. > :13:32.told her daughter Minnie had wind, but just days later she was rushed

:13:33. > :13:36.to a specialist London hosphtal where she underwent the operation.

:13:37. > :13:40.Now Helen is supporting calls by the Children's Heart Foundation charity

:13:41. > :13:44.for every new born baby to have its blood oxygen levels tested to

:13:45. > :13:55.highlight heart problems sooner Peter Whittlesea reports.

:13:56. > :14:00.This baby is happy and healthy but she was born with a heart ddfect.

:14:01. > :14:03.Her parents believe that if the medical team at the hospital in

:14:04. > :14:08.Ashford hadn't carried out ` simple text went `` test which was born,

:14:09. > :14:16.she might never have survivdd. We are so thankful. We've been very

:14:17. > :14:21.lucky and it shouldn't be ldft up to luck but with Minnie it wasn't

:14:22. > :14:23.picked up, and it was thanks to the doctor that suspected something was

:14:24. > :14:28.wrong with her, she didn't look right, they did the check and that

:14:29. > :14:32.saved her life. Mums like Hdlen and campaign groups want the silple test

:14:33. > :14:38.to be carried out on all newborn babies within 24 hours of bhrth to

:14:39. > :14:42.detect congenital heart defdcts A placed on the baby's fingertip to

:14:43. > :14:46.determine oxygen levels in the blood and this test alone can detdctive

:14:47. > :14:53.and 90% of life`threatening heart defects. Each year, that around

:14:54. > :14:59.5,000 babies born with congdnital heart defects, about a third of

:15:00. > :15:03.those are regarded as critical. And it is very important that they are

:15:04. > :15:07.treated as early as possibld. That is exactly what happened to them

:15:08. > :15:13.Minnie. Her condition was stabilised and within a week, she had open

:15:14. > :15:18.heart surgery. Afterwards, there was a difference. Initially, we didn't

:15:19. > :15:22.realise there was anything wrong. For you to see it in a child is

:15:23. > :15:26.difficult but a machine is very sensitive. It can show you signs

:15:27. > :15:30.that you can't see with your eyes. That's why Minnie was Mac p`rents

:15:31. > :15:36.believe that this test should be a standard procedure in every

:15:37. > :15:41.hospital. `` that's why Minnie's parents believe.

:15:42. > :15:45.This is our top story tonight. New video has emerged of a charhty

:15:46. > :15:48.convoy to Syria that was usdd as cover by Abdul Waheed Majeed, the

:15:49. > :15:51.father from Crawley believed to be the first British man to carry out a

:15:52. > :15:54.suicide bombing in Syria. The Children in Deen charity drove

:15:55. > :15:57.vehicles and aid to the Turkish border in July last year.

:15:58. > :16:00.Also in tonight's programme. When Burberry met Bloomsbury, thd fashion

:16:01. > :16:13.label inspired by the Sussex country home of the famous intellectuals.

:16:14. > :16:17.I am better than you becausd I am a marquis.

:16:18. > :16:21.The Sussex schoolboy with star quality. Toby Murray lands the lead

:16:22. > :16:27.in Emil and the Detectives `t the National Theatre.

:16:28. > :16:34.He's a distinguished musici`n and conductor who also composes his own

:16:35. > :16:38.work. But at the age of 42, James Morgan from Hayward's Heath has been

:16:39. > :16:41.diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. At the moment, around 8,000 people

:16:42. > :16:45.in the South East are living with Parkinson's. While 127,000 have been

:16:46. > :16:53.diagnosed with the disease `cross the UK. One in 20 are under the age

:16:54. > :16:56.of 40 at the time of diagnosis. For tonight's Special Report, Hdlen Drew

:16:57. > :17:04.has been to meet James Morg`n who wants to raise awareness of how the

:17:05. > :17:08.disease can affect younger people. It was while conducting an orchestra

:17:09. > :17:12.that James Morgan had an unpleasant feeling in his hand. He went to the

:17:13. > :17:18.doctor and was diagnosed with the start of Parkinson's diseasd at the

:17:19. > :17:23.age of 42. I am still mostlx in denial about it, if I'm hondst. It

:17:24. > :17:30.is devastating to get news like that. But at the time I didn't take

:17:31. > :17:33.it in. His wife, Juliet, is also a musician and, together, in their

:17:34. > :17:39.house near Haywards Heath, they ve written many TV and film

:17:40. > :17:44.soundtracks. I don't think `nybody wants to watch somebody then go

:17:45. > :17:49.through something like this. It s hard to have the whole family to

:17:50. > :17:53.watch him. But we are in it together. And we are determhned to

:17:54. > :17:58.carry on and it is not going to let us stop doing all the things we want

:17:59. > :18:03.to do. Having Parkinson's dhsease at James' age is not rare. It hs much

:18:04. > :18:06.more common to be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease before 40 but

:18:07. > :18:11.not enough people are aware of the condition and where it can `ffect

:18:12. > :18:14.people who are younger. So for people who I am good Parkinson is,

:18:15. > :18:17.life can be very challenging and that is why we need to do more

:18:18. > :18:23.research and raise awareness of this condition.

:18:24. > :18:28.More people became aware of Parkinson is when Michael J Fox got

:18:29. > :18:32.the condition at the age of 30. In order to raise awareness further,

:18:33. > :18:35.James and Juliet are organising a charity concert at the Royal Albert

:18:36. > :18:46.Hall. The concert is called Symphony. It is a mixture of music

:18:47. > :18:52.and comedy. We have worked with all sorts of people. We have Arlstrong

:18:53. > :18:57.and Miller on the bill. Rebdcca Ferguson. Jason Munford. Julian

:18:58. > :19:02.Webber. A real mixture of dhfferent kinds of acts. The concept dxploit

:19:03. > :19:05.is on 4th of June and the money raised will go towards Parkhnson's

:19:06. > :19:12.research which this to term and couple hopes will get closer to

:19:13. > :19:16.finding a cure. `` which thhs determined couple hopes will get

:19:17. > :19:19.closer to finding a cure. Burberry is one of the country's

:19:20. > :19:22.leading labels, a byword for the best of British around the globe and

:19:23. > :19:26.their London Week Fashion Show attracted Oscar nominees, pop stars

:19:27. > :19:38.and the top fashion editors to its front row. It is London Fashion

:19:39. > :19:41.Week, absolutely my thing. But how many would have recognised the

:19:42. > :19:44.inspiration behind the clothes? The label's designer revealed hd taken

:19:45. > :19:47.his muse from the decorations at Charleston near Lewes, the country

:19:48. > :20:00.home of the Bloomsbury artists. Sara Smith reports.

:20:01. > :20:07.It's one of London Fashion Week s hottest tickets. Today's wrhte`up

:20:08. > :20:11.suggests Burberry's chief ddsigner Christopher Bailey didn't dhsappoint

:20:12. > :20:14.his admirers. The swirls and motifs which decorate his pieces m`y be new

:20:15. > :20:20.to the fashion world but thdy have their roots here, at this f`rmhouse

:20:21. > :20:24.in the Sussex countryside. This is the sparing at Charleston, this is
