:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to South East Today, I'm BBC's

:00:00. > :00:07.Welcome to South East Today, I'm Natalie Graham. And I'm Rob Smith.

:00:08. > :00:11.Tonight's top stories: I want out of Europe, the Sussex Conservative MP

:00:12. > :00:17.who says he no longer wants to be in the EU.

:00:18. > :00:25.Police start searching the river Medway in Tonbridge, looking for a

:00:26. > :00:27.man missing for almost a wedk. Some specialist cancer surgdry is

:00:28. > :00:32.cancelled at Maidstone Hosphtal following the deaths of fivd people

:00:33. > :00:35.through complications. Also in tonight 's programme: policd start

:00:36. > :00:37.searching the river Ed Drakd searching for a man who has been

:00:38. > :00:42.missing for almost a week. His family fear the worst. H think

:00:43. > :00:44.we will fight and dead, thing that is the outcome, the more thd days go

:00:45. > :00:48.on. Going on the pull at Gatwick. Gary

:00:49. > :00:50.Lineker takes the strain for Sport Relief.

:00:51. > :00:53.And one week after fainting on live television, X Factor star Rdbecca

:00:54. > :01:06.Ferguson embarks on a tour which brings her to Kent and Sussdx.

:01:07. > :01:11.A Sussex Conservative MP has revealed that he will vote to leave

:01:12. > :01:16.the European Union if his p`rty win the next General Election and hold a

:01:17. > :01:20.subsequent referendum. Henrx Smith who represents Crawley has said that

:01:21. > :01:23.if people voted UKIP at the next election it would split the vote

:01:24. > :01:26.leading to a Labour Governmdnt. It comes just days after Rochester MP

:01:27. > :01:32.Mark Reckless launched his own referendum in his constituency on

:01:33. > :01:40.membership of the EU. Our Political Editor Louise Stewart has this

:01:41. > :01:45.exclusive report. Earlier this week the Liberal Democrat leader, Nick

:01:46. > :01:51.Clegg, agreed to go head to go head`to`head with Nigel Far`ge in a

:01:52. > :01:54.TV debate on the UK in Europe ahead of the European elections. David

:01:55. > :01:59.Cameron declined to take part in the debate but has pledged a referendum

:02:00. > :02:04.in 2017 if the Tories win the next election. That is not enough to

:02:05. > :02:13.satisfy even some loosely loyal MPs within his own party. Even hf there

:02:14. > :02:17.is a Conservative win in thd next election in 2017 then there will be

:02:18. > :02:21.a referendum and I would vote to leave. I think we should be an

:02:22. > :02:26.independent country. His fellow MP Mark reckless would also like to

:02:27. > :02:33.launch the EE. He has launched `` leave the EU. He has launchdd his

:02:34. > :02:37.own referendum. Critics are worried about the UKIP ability to attract

:02:38. > :02:41.votes, particularly in the south`east. National polling has

:02:42. > :02:48.showed that we are number two with Labour in Folkestone and hide in

:02:49. > :02:51.South Thanet and we say votd Tory, gets Labour. David Cameron hopes

:02:52. > :02:55.that by negotiating a new ddal with the EU he will be able to whn a new

:02:56. > :02:58.deal with the EU he will be able to win around your wrist kept ht MPs

:02:59. > :03:07.and voters but his plans were dealt a blow when Angela Merkel s`id that

:03:08. > :03:12.those who want fundamental reform... I am afraid they `re in

:03:13. > :03:16.for a disappointment. Henry Crawley's constituency has been a

:03:17. > :03:20.prime target for UKIP and is likely to be again. He hopes that by

:03:21. > :03:28.speaking out on your pecan dissipate their threat. `` by speaking out on

:03:29. > :03:30.Europe, he can dissipate th`t threat.

:03:31. > :03:34.And Louise is with us now. Louise, is today's news from Henry Smith an

:03:35. > :03:37.attempt to take on UKIP dirdctly on Europe? He is taking the fight

:03:38. > :03:42.directly to them. He wants their tanks of his lawn. He is aw`re that

:03:43. > :03:47.they targeted Crawley in thd local elections and fielded candidates in

:03:48. > :03:51.all awards. He is also facing a squeeze from Labour because it is a

:03:52. > :03:55.key Labour target and Ed Miliband has been to Crawley to visit. He

:03:56. > :03:57.only has a 6000 majority and he has to step up and take the fight to

:03:58. > :04:01.them. And you can see a longer debate on

:04:02. > :04:05.how political parties in thd South East view Europe on Sunday Politics,

:04:06. > :04:07.this Sunday at 11.00am on BBC One. Some specialist cancer oper`tions

:04:08. > :04:11.have been suspended at Maidstone Hospital following the death of five

:04:12. > :04:14.patients. All five died frol potentially avoidable complhcations

:04:15. > :04:19.within a year of having stolach or throat surgery.

:04:20. > :04:23.Patients now needing upper gastro intestinal surgery are being sent to

:04:24. > :04:27.St Thomas's Hospital in London. One family has already launched a

:04:28. > :04:36.criminal negligence claim. Our News Correspondent Mark Norman rdports.

:04:37. > :04:39.The facts are pretty blunt. Five people died from complications

:04:40. > :04:45.following cancer surgery at Maidstone Hospital. We know that

:04:46. > :04:48.those deaths were avoidable. As a result specialist keyhole strgery

:04:49. > :04:55.for our pie gastrointestinal cancer has been suspended and the hospital

:04:56. > :05:00.is apologising. `` upper gastrointestinal. It appears there

:05:01. > :05:04.have been complications to the keyhole surgery. Some patients have

:05:05. > :05:08.died, five, and we believe complications could have contributed

:05:09. > :05:12.to their deaths. Is it the fault the staff, the procedure or the

:05:13. > :05:17.hospital? We believe it is due to the keyhole approach to the surgery,

:05:18. > :05:24.it is the surgery itself th`t has led to the complication. Thhs

:05:25. > :05:28.surgery can include procedures on anything including the stom`ch up to

:05:29. > :05:31.the oesophagus. It was carrhed out as keyhole surgery which involves

:05:32. > :05:36.making a number of small incisions on the right`hand side of the body

:05:37. > :05:41.before tubes are inserted into the patient so that surgeons can cut

:05:42. > :05:45.away any cancerous growths. Despite the complications of that operation

:05:46. > :05:50.we know that five people didd from the surgery from what are ddscribed

:05:51. > :05:53.as avoidable complications. Now the family one of those patients is

:05:54. > :05:59.pursuing the trust for a crhminal negligence case. Our role is to help

:06:00. > :06:04.our clients get to the bottom of this story. What exactly happened?

:06:05. > :06:13.What surgical procedures were carried out on that day? Whx weren't

:06:14. > :06:17.they given the choice of different or more conventional and safer

:06:18. > :06:22.procedures? For the next 12 months patients will still be treated at

:06:23. > :06:25.Maidstone but their surgery will happen in London. The hospital here

:06:26. > :06:27.are making what they describe as necessary improvements.

:06:28. > :06:35.Mark joins us from Maidstond Hospital now. Mark, how big a

:06:36. > :06:40.problem is this for the hospital? It is clearly a serious issue. First

:06:41. > :06:44.and foremost it is a tragedx for the families who would want the best

:06:45. > :06:47.outcome for their loved ones. The hospital told us today that the

:06:48. > :06:52.mortality rate for patients with this kind of cancer falls whthin

:06:53. > :06:55.national levels. They told le that the surgery is well established and

:06:56. > :06:59.the general outcomes for patients are falling within national levels.

:07:00. > :07:02.It is a big issue and they have tried to act quickly and give

:07:03. > :07:05.themselves 12 months to sort out the problem. Thank you.

:07:06. > :07:07.In a moment: It's a burning issue in Redhill.

:07:08. > :07:17.Desperate attempts are made to stop the stench from a landfill site

:07:18. > :07:23.The family of a Kent man who's been missing for almost a week s`y they

:07:24. > :07:26.fear he will be found dead. Keiron Knowlden was last seen in the early

:07:27. > :07:29.hours of Saturday morning in Tonbridge. Today specialist police

:07:30. > :07:33.began a search of the River Medway. The 25`year`old father of one hasn't

:07:34. > :07:39.been seen since he left a b`r after a night out with friends and family.

:07:40. > :07:45.Charlie Rose reports. As the search for Kieren

:07:46. > :07:50.intensifies, his family say that they fear the worst. He would not

:07:51. > :07:54.stay away this long with no contact. He would not be sitting herd and

:07:55. > :08:02.letting my mum hurt as much as what she is not tell us where he is. What

:08:03. > :08:07.do you think has happened to him? Personally, I think we are going to

:08:08. > :08:11.find him dead, I do think that is the outcome, the more the d`ys go on

:08:12. > :08:17.and the longer it goes, I do think he is dead and it is awful for me to

:08:18. > :08:22.say. Kiran Nolton was reported missing last Saturday evening. He

:08:23. > :08:27.was last seen leaving this bar. Other members of his family believe

:08:28. > :08:34.he could still be alive and may even have been taken. What is yotr gut

:08:35. > :08:37.feeling? Yes, if you had asked me that question yesterday I would have

:08:38. > :08:40.said he was in the river. If you asked me this morning then H think

:08:41. > :08:44.he is alive and they know where he is and they still have got him. I

:08:45. > :08:54.cannot even sleep in my bed any more. Just stupid things like that,

:08:55. > :08:58.like my kids have started to notice. His disappearance is completely out

:08:59. > :09:02.of character and the police are extremely concerned for his

:09:03. > :09:07.well`being as are his familx. The river search will continue over the

:09:08. > :09:13.weekend. He is a son and a brother and a dad and an uncle, we `ll need

:09:14. > :09:23.him. We need him home and wd need him home safe. I really can't do

:09:24. > :09:30.this any more! I just need him home. Somebody out there must know. They

:09:31. > :09:37.need to tell us, they need to tell us what they have done with him We

:09:38. > :09:41.just need him home. Very emotional scenes there. Charlie has bden

:09:42. > :09:45.following the search in Tonbridge all day and he joins us now.

:09:46. > :09:49.Charlie, where do the policd plan to do now?

:09:50. > :09:53.Charlie, where do the policd plan Police have been searching this

:09:54. > :09:59.stretch of river all afternoon. They are trying to continue to sdarch

:10:00. > :10:03.tomorrow and they are using a form of water radar to find out what is

:10:04. > :10:07.at the bottom of the river. When they find something the polhce

:10:08. > :10:13.divers then dive in but thex cannot see anything, that is the problem,

:10:14. > :10:18.it is cloudy and murky survdy to touch and feel what is at the bottom

:10:19. > :10:21.of the river. The investigation is intensifying and CCTV is behng

:10:22. > :10:25.reviewed and enquiries are being carried out. The family are doing

:10:26. > :10:29.their own work, putting up these posters as they desperately try to

:10:30. > :10:32.find out what has happened. Following weeks of terrible smells

:10:33. > :10:36.coming from a landfill site near Redhill, the company running it

:10:37. > :10:39.Biffa, have been forced to hnstall a gas burning chimney on the site

:10:40. > :10:42.today. The flare stack will burn off excess methane and hydrogen sulphide

:10:43. > :10:45.gas. Biffa say the smell, while

:10:46. > :10:48.unpleasant, is harmless, and that they're is spending almost half a

:10:49. > :10:51.million pounds on measures to get rid of it. The smell's appe`rance

:10:52. > :10:57.coincided with the winter's heavy rainfall. Our Environment

:10:58. > :11:02.Correspondent Yvette Austin reports. Rubbish from across the south`east,

:11:03. > :11:07.one of the last remaining l`ndfill sites in the region. A lot of the

:11:08. > :11:10.time it is unnoticed, like we like our rubbish to be. In the rdcent

:11:11. > :11:15.months the smell has been coming back to want the people of Redhill.

:11:16. > :11:19.The place is trying to attr`ct tourists and people coming to wheat

:11:20. > :11:22.in restaurants and it is not very nice. My friend came through on the

:11:23. > :11:28.train and said she could smdll it as she came through from Brighton so it

:11:29. > :11:32.is having an impact! It is bad that 500 people have complex. Whdn the

:11:33. > :11:36.smell hits you and it is at its worst you can taste it at the back

:11:37. > :11:41.of your throat. It really m`kes you want to shut all the windows and

:11:42. > :11:46.pick the phone up very quickly. The problem the operators say is the

:11:47. > :11:50.weather. The rain has rotted their waste quicker than predicted causing

:11:51. > :11:54.hydrogen sulphide to begin `n off before the systems were in place to

:11:55. > :11:59.deal with it. Now the company is playing catch up. Among the

:12:00. > :12:03.emergency works, a temporarx gas flare has been installed. It is

:12:04. > :12:08.burning 300 cubic metres of gas and hour. All around me there is another

:12:09. > :12:13.deodorising system. You can see it here. It is effectively grabbing the

:12:14. > :12:26.odour molecules and grounding them. There is a distinct smell of

:12:27. > :12:28.lavender in the air which is being pumped out. This is normal but there

:12:29. > :12:31.was also a temporary deodorhsing system there and it is all to try

:12:32. > :12:33.and stop the smell reaching the homes. The Environment Agency has

:12:34. > :12:36.launched an investigation. Hf if they do not keep the gas within the

:12:37. > :12:38.site and they are breaching their environmental permit then wd will

:12:39. > :12:45.consider formal action against them for breaching the permit. The MP

:12:46. > :12:48.says the residents should bd compensated. I think they h`ve a

:12:49. > :12:52.reasonable case about what they are doing but they are explaining things

:12:53. > :12:55.that are unacceptable in terms of the lack of infrastructure so they

:12:56. > :13:01.were not ready for the rain. The company is apologising to the

:13:02. > :13:09.residents and say there is no risk to their health.

:13:10. > :13:11.Police investigating the murder of 20`year`old man in Folkestone want

:13:12. > :13:15.to speak to 22`year`old Timothy Keith Avril to help them with their

:13:16. > :13:18.inquiries. He is five feet nine slim build and speaks with ` London

:13:19. > :13:21.accent. A 38`year`old man and a 37`year old woman have been arrested

:13:22. > :13:23.and bailed pending further enquiries.

:13:24. > :13:26.Two 53`year`old Italian men have been jailed for a total of 24 years

:13:27. > :13:30.for attempting to smuggle cocaine with a street value of ?13 lillion

:13:31. > :13:34.through the port of Dover. 63 kilos of the drug were discovered in

:13:35. > :13:43.carrier bags in the cab of ` Swiss registered lorry. The men wdre each

:13:44. > :13:47.sentenced to 12 years. A woman from Ken said she considered

:13:48. > :13:52.taking her own life after a holiday on a cruise ship better with a

:13:53. > :13:56.debilitating condition. She says she now has a permanent feeling of sea

:13:57. > :14:01.sickness since the trip in 2012 She has been diagnosed with a

:14:02. > :14:08.neurological syndrome that causes a constant feeling of swaying.

:14:09. > :14:15.It was meant to be the trip of a lifetime, a luxury cruise to Norway.

:14:16. > :14:21.18 months after arriving back on dry land, Diane Morley feels as if she

:14:22. > :14:29.is still at sea. Inside I al swaying, I bob, sometimes mx head

:14:30. > :14:35.gets heavy. When I walk it hs like walking on a trampoline. Should he

:14:36. > :14:40.was eventually diagnosed with a balanced disorder which is brought

:14:41. > :14:44.on by exposure to motion, most commonly by journeys by sea or air.

:14:45. > :14:49.It can go on for weeks or months or even years but the cause is unclear.

:14:50. > :14:55.Recent research into brain `ctivity has shed some light. What is

:14:56. > :14:59.happening is that there is `bnormal high activity or high metabolism in

:15:00. > :15:06.specific parts of the brain and these parts deal with speci`l memory

:15:07. > :15:09.`` spatial memory and also interpretation of movement. When she

:15:10. > :15:13.fell down a couple of stairs a guy picked up and asked if she was all

:15:14. > :15:17.right. She said she was and he thought she had been drinking. Diane

:15:18. > :15:22.is undergoing physiotherapy to retrain the brain to balancd again.

:15:23. > :15:25.Feeling all at sea is something she accepts she may have to learn to

:15:26. > :15:28.live with. It opened with an investment of ?120

:15:29. > :15:32.million but in its first ye`r things couldn't have gone much worse at

:15:33. > :15:35.Sussex Coast College in Hastings. A damning Ofsted report branddd it

:15:36. > :15:40.inadequate and the principal left within months. But under a new

:15:41. > :15:43.management team, the situathon has dramatically improved. The latest

:15:44. > :15:54.inspection found the Collegd is now good overall and even outst`nding in

:15:55. > :15:57.some areas. Piers Hopkirk rdports. With its ?120 million price tag

:15:58. > :16:03.Sussex Coast College was once in danger of being dismissed as a

:16:04. > :16:08.expensive failure. For the 7400 pupils and staff today marks the

:16:09. > :16:11.resignation `` recognition of a transformation. What goes on in the

:16:12. > :16:16.classroom makes a real diffdrence to the success of a student and by

:16:17. > :16:19.focusing on learning, assessment and teaching, every student is working

:16:20. > :16:23.to their maximum and feeling inspired in the classroom to learn.

:16:24. > :16:28.Ofsted inspectors described the changes here as a dramatic

:16:29. > :16:34.improvement. Three years ago they painted a rather different picture.

:16:35. > :16:37.In November 2011 the collegd was rated as inadequate and the

:16:38. > :16:44.principal stepped down a short time later. In March 2012 Clive Cook took

:16:45. > :16:48.over and today the college was ranked as good, with outstanding

:16:49. > :16:51.leadership. The teaching has really improved and you can really feel the

:16:52. > :16:54.difference. I had friends who were here before and they are je`lous of

:16:55. > :17:00.me that I have come here and it is better than our was for thel. There

:17:01. > :17:03.is a lot of emphasis on better teaching and subsequently bdtter

:17:04. > :17:07.exam results as well. You would not want to say you went to Hastings

:17:08. > :17:14.College because people look down at you. How do you feel today to be a

:17:15. > :17:18.student here? I am proud! This girl left school with no GCSEs btt the

:17:19. > :17:22.college gave her a place and now she is taking three A`levels. I have

:17:23. > :17:29.gone from nothing to the best I can possibly be and I think this college

:17:30. > :17:34.delivers `` deserves a lot of recognition. The pressure now for

:17:35. > :17:38.the college is to stay on the up. And Piers joins us from Hastings

:17:39. > :17:42.now, so how confident are they that they can not only maintain the

:17:43. > :17:46.standards but improve even further? They are really bullish. Thdre is a

:17:47. > :17:50.real sense of optimism and confidence at the college. Having

:17:51. > :17:54.been there today, the one thing you really notice emanating frol the

:17:55. > :17:58.staff and pupils is a sense of pride. They talk about being proud

:17:59. > :18:02.to study there and proud to work there and I suspect that fedling has

:18:03. > :18:05.been missing for a little while now. When I spoke to the principle he

:18:06. > :18:09.said that the journey does not finish here. We want to be

:18:10. > :18:12.outstanding in everything wd do and we are still on target. Thank you

:18:13. > :18:19.very much. This is our top story tonight:

:18:20. > :18:24.Sussex Conservative MP Henrx Smith has announced he will vote to leave

:18:25. > :18:28.the European Union if his p`rty leads `` winds the next election and

:18:29. > :18:32.hold a referendum. He is sahd he is concerned that voting for UKIP could

:18:33. > :18:36.split the vote and lead to ` Labour government.

:18:37. > :18:41.Also in tonight's programme: join me to find out what is going on at

:18:42. > :18:46.Gatwick on Southeast today. After a dry and sunny week we have a

:18:47. > :18:51.dry and warm weekend. Join le later for the details.

:18:52. > :19:02.Emily Parker had just finished her second year at university when she

:19:03. > :19:05.was diagnosed with leukaemi`. She had to endure five months of

:19:06. > :19:09.chemotherapy to tackle the disease, leading to her losing her h`ir and

:19:10. > :19:11.dealing with a host of other unpleasant side`effects. But the

:19:12. > :19:15.21`year old from Uckfield ddcided to keep a fog of her experiencds,

:19:16. > :19:18.sharing beauty tips and hints as well as detailing her personal

:19:19. > :19:21.experiences. And she struck a chord, her last entry has been seen by

:19:22. > :19:23.thousands of people. Sara Slith has been to meet her for tonight's

:19:24. > :19:26.Special Report. When I was having treatment one

:19:27. > :19:29.thing that happened to my skin was it became very dry. I have patches
