:01:27. > :01:29.carried out a suicide bombing in Syria has spoken exclusivelx to the
:01:30. > :01:32.BBC ` claiming his brother hs "a hero". Abdul Waheed Majeed from
:01:33. > :01:35.Crawley drove a lorry packed with explosives into a jail in Aleppo
:01:36. > :01:38.last month. Tonight, his brother Hafeez Majeed said he'd madd the
:01:39. > :01:44.ultimate sacrifice to save the Syrian people. But the Crawley MP
:01:45. > :01:53.Henry Smith has urged Government action to tackle extremism. Louise
:01:54. > :01:58.Stewart reports. Abdul Waheed Majid's journex began
:01:59. > :02:03.in Crawley but it ended thotsands of miles ago `` away when he got behind
:02:04. > :02:09.the wheel of his truck and became the first British person to carry
:02:10. > :02:14.out a suicide bombing in Syria. His brothers spoke exclusively to the
:02:15. > :02:21.BBC. He said his family belheved he had launched the attack to rescue
:02:22. > :02:25.prisoners. My brother was not a terrorist, he was a hero. Hd made
:02:26. > :02:30.the ultimate sacrifice to s`ve the Syrian people. The suicide bomb
:02:31. > :02:35.attack happened a month ago at a prison in Aleppo. 41`year`old Abdul
:02:36. > :02:41.Waheed Majid was named a few days later. Yesterday the Sussex MP took
:02:42. > :02:49.to the floor of the House of Commons to demand to know what has been done
:02:50. > :02:54.to tackle radicalisation. I'm also saying to the local police `nd local
:02:55. > :02:59.authorities, we need to go beyond the present strategy which has been
:03:00. > :03:03.in place so far to tackle extremism. We need to support communitx is
:03:04. > :03:11.better to identify where people may be at risk of radicalisation. How
:03:12. > :03:16.did a man with three childrdn and a steady job become radicalisdd? He

:03:21. > :03:27.Abdul Waheed Majid regularlx drove him to in Crawley. Some of those men
:03:28. > :03:34.were rated `` Witter convicted under an MI5 operation. Abdul Wahded Majid
:03:35. > :03:42.was never implicated in the Bluewater plot. If my brothdr had
:03:43. > :03:50.been a British soldier, the British people in that prison, and the act
:03:51. > :03:55.of heroism he did, he would have been awarded a posthumous Vhctoria
:03:56. > :04:01.Cross. But his actions in Sxria had triggered alarm back home. The
:04:02. > :04:07.danger is when we see an individual commit an act publicly and be
:04:08. > :04:10.venerated publicly afterwards, it does have inspirational effdcts on
:04:11. > :04:14.others from the broader comlunity he comes from. There has been ` mixed
:04:15. > :04:21.reaction to the claims of hhs brother in Crawley. It is s`d that a
:04:22. > :04:27.member of the family regards a suicide bomber as a hero. You never
:04:28. > :04:34.really know what actually h`ppens. Probably in his mind he was a hero

:04:44. > :04:51.a hero. He was not a threat to the British public and never has been.
:04:52. > :04:56.Louise is here in the studio. What else have the family said about his
:04:57. > :05:03.actions? You can tell from that report it is fairly in waters. They
:05:04. > :05:05.claim he was not radicalised. He was moved by what was happening in Syria
:05:06. > :05:12.in Syria and wants to help the people there. It has to be said that
:05:13. > :05:16.we do not recommend that anxone travels to Syria and get involved in
:05:17. > :05:23.the conflict there. There are concerns this will lead to copycat
:05:24. > :05:28.style attacks. There have bden four further arrests on Syria related
:05:29. > :05:34.charges in Manchester. In Crawley, the local MP Henry Smith has written
:05:35. > :05:41.to the Chief con. He wants the local authority to take tough acthon to
:05:42. > :05:44.tackle this kind of extremism. Thank you.
:05:45. > :05:47.And you can see an extended report on this story featuring an dxclusive

:06:09. > :06:11.claiming the county council's approach is causing a recruhtment
:06:12. > :06:17.crisis because teachers no longer want to become heads. Peter
:06:18. > :06:28.Whittlesea joins us live from County Hall in Maidstone ` this document's
:06:29. > :06:32.causing real anger tonight. That is right. This report has got
:06:33. > :06:38.Headteachers fired up. They are saying this is evidence of the blame
:06:39. > :06:43.game which exist in education in Kent. Often they are not giving the
:06:44. > :06:48.support they need. At Countx Hall BC this is not the case. This policy
:06:49. > :06:53.comes from the Department of education and will be rolled out
:06:54. > :06:57.across the country. Hired and fired like football managers, that is the
:06:58. > :07:01.claim of head teachers after this report spells out what steps the
:07:02. > :07:21.county council will take to tackle underperforming schools. Thd
:07:22. > :07:25.document says... This headtdacher claims he was undermined whdn

:07:46. > :07:50.council says the document is a draft which clarifies the governmdnt
:07:51. > :07:56.policy and they are not hidhng and filing heads. Absolutely not. We
:07:57. > :08:02.take action to provide a better leadership when it is needed. We
:08:03. > :08:07.never get payoffs. We give people what they are entitled to. @nd you
:08:08. > :08:11.are not bullying Headteachers? I would say we are not bullying
:08:12. > :08:16.teachers but we are being robust about this critical issue. Do
:08:17. > :08:22.parents think the buck should always stop the headteacher? If th`t was my
:08:23. > :08:27.daughter's school I would w`nt action to be taken. If he's not
:08:28. > :08:33.getting the results, it is harsh that he takes the full wrap. Retired
:08:34. > :08:39.headteacher Peter Walker saxs this approach is affecting recruhtment.
:08:40. > :08:46.When I left my job, there wdre 00 applications for it. When I left,
:08:47. > :08:53.there were 12 applications. `` when I first applied for my job. Kent
:08:54. > :08:57.County Council says that is no problem with recruitment. Tonight

:09:59. > :10:01.have occupied land there ` `nd the local MP has criticised Brighton and
:10:02. > :10:05.Hove City Council for opening the park gates, after they started to
:10:06. > :10:16.get in. Natalie Graham has our report. The gate into the whld Park

:10:22. > :10:26.travellers gain illegal accdss has been strongly denied by the police
:10:27. > :10:30.and council. The same thing happened last August and their explanation
:10:31. > :10:34.now is the same as it was then. We had to open a gate after thdy
:10:35. > :10:42.arrived in order to make it safe. They need to go in using thd
:10:43. > :10:46.pavement. You can see that looks like you are encouraging thdm. You
:10:47. > :10:52.are enabling them to get on the site. Once they are on the site it
:10:53. > :10:59.is better that it is safe for everyone. We do have a perm`nent
:11:00. > :11:04.site in Brighton and they should be using those powers to protect local
:11:05. > :11:08.residents and do the right thing. It is madness, I cannot understand why
:11:09. > :11:14.the council would give a grden light to travellers from all over the

:11:47. > :11:54.them, it has not been a big issue. It is very intimidating. It affects
:11:55. > :11:58.my business very badly. The council is now beginning the process of
:11:59. > :12:02.eviction, one which has been a common occurrence in the city for

:12:09. > :12:13.permanent travellers' site ` is that likely to solve this ongoing
:12:14. > :12:18.problem? The council believds it will. They say by creating permanent
:12:19. > :12:22.pitches it will free up the temporary ones and alleviatd the
:12:23. > :12:31.problems of travellers arriving illegally. Other groups see that
