:00:10. > :00:15.Good evening. Britain's onlx Green MP, Caroline Lucas, has takdn the

:00:16. > :00:18.stand in court this afternoon to defend her decision to take part in

:00:19. > :00:21.anti`fracking protests in the West Sussex village of Balcombe. The

:00:22. > :00:24.Brighton Pavilion MP was arrested outside the energy firm Cuadrilla's

:00:25. > :00:26.drilling site there in August. But she denies two public order

:00:27. > :00:34.offences, maintaining her actions were legitimate and approprhate as

:00:35. > :00:37.Piers Hopkirk reports. From the Commons to the court house, Brighton

:00:38. > :00:44.Pavilion MP, Caroline Lucas, arriving to give evidence in her

:00:45. > :00:53.trial before Brighton magistrates. I'm arresting you... This w`s the

:00:54. > :00:56.moment she was arrested last August. She was charged with breach of the

:00:57. > :01:01.Public Order Act and wilful obstruction of the highway. Charges

:01:02. > :01:04.the country's only Green MP has denied throughout her trial. Giving

:01:05. > :01:15.evidence she told the court: Asked why she is didn't movd on she

:01:16. > :01:37.said: Caroline Lucas is on trial with four

:01:38. > :01:42.other defendants, speaking on the court steps today, she thanked her

:01:43. > :01:45.supporters. The support's bden amazing for all five of us,

:01:46. > :01:50.constituents writing to me, I know they wanted me to be here to make

:01:51. > :01:55.the case and I have been gl`d to do that. All five defendants ddny the

:01:56. > :02:06.charges against them. The c`se continues. A Kent chaplain says

:02:07. > :02:09.she's willing to defy Church of England rules and risk dischplinary

:02:10. > :02:15.action by offering a servicd to bless gay marriages. Britain's first

:02:16. > :02:18.same`sex marriages will takd place at one minute past midnight tonight.

:02:19. > :02:21.The Reverend Kes Grant, who works at St Augustines Academy in Mahdstone,

:02:22. > :02:29.says all married couples should be treated equally, whether thdy're gay

:02:30. > :02:33.or straight. I can bless thd couple. They are made in the image `nd love

:02:34. > :02:37.of God. If I can bless a car, if I can bless an animal, if I c`n bless

:02:38. > :02:40.someone's watch or ring, anx inanimate object, why can't a bless

:02:41. > :02:47.a loving committed union between two people? It doesn't make any sense to

:02:48. > :02:50.me. A 24`year`old woman's bden arrested on suspicion of murder in

:02:51. > :02:55.Gillingham after a man was found dead in North London. Father of

:02:56. > :02:58.three Mehmet Hassan was discovered with neck and chest injuries, after

:02:59. > :03:01.the police forced entry to ` property in Islington on Monday

:03:02. > :03:08.Four men have also been arrdsted in London. A West Sussex secondary

:03:09. > :03:10.school has been put in spechal measures, following a damning Ofsted

:03:11. > :03:13.inspection. The watchdog saxs students at Oakmeeds Communhty

:03:14. > :03:16.College in Burgess Hill are not achieving their academic potential,

:03:17. > :03:35.because of poor quality teaching and inadequate leadership and

:03:36. > :03:39.management. The first phase of Lydd airport is under way in Kent. The

:03:40. > :03:49.expansion plans were opposed by wildlife and environmental

:03:50. > :03:52.campaigners who say it will damage the area. Controversial plans to

:03:53. > :03:55.create the first new grammar school places for 50 years have received a

:03:56. > :03:58.major setback. Kent County Council's been backing campaigners in

:03:59. > :04:01.Sevenoaks who say grammar school places are desperately needdd there.

:04:02. > :04:04.But when the Weald of Kent grammar school in Tonbridge offered to

:04:05. > :04:07.create a satellite site, thd Government said an all`girls school

:04:08. > :04:10.could not run a mixed`sex annexe. And now parents at Weald of Kent

:04:11. > :04:13.have voted against plans to make the entire school mixed`sex. Lucinda

:04:14. > :04:17.Adam has the details. It is a mathematical equation that no one

:04:18. > :04:20.seems able to solve. How do you create more grammar school places so

:04:21. > :04:23.there are enough for everyone who passes the 11`plus when the

:04:24. > :04:26.Government won't allow any new grammar schools to open? Thd Weald

:04:27. > :04:29.of Kent Grammar School for Girls thought it had found a solution `

:04:30. > :04:32.offering to create a second school site in Sevenoaks, but the

:04:33. > :04:36.Government said the whole school would have to become mixed `nd this

:04:37. > :04:43.week parents voted against that plan. The idea was it was going to

:04:44. > :04:47.be a co`educational school `nnex at Sevenoaks with a 780 additional

:04:48. > :04:51.places, of which half would be for boys and half would be for girls.

:04:52. > :04:54.Now, if we lose half of the girls places here then overall, once the

:04:55. > :04:58.school was fully up and running there would be no additional places

:04:59. > :05:01.for girls. It is a concern to us as governors, as well as those

:05:02. > :05:04.expressed by parents. Last June it was revealed the Weald of Kdnt and

:05:05. > :05:08.Maidstone's Invicta Grammar were bidding to set up a satellite site

:05:09. > :05:10.in Sevenoaks. Then at the end of last year the Government rejected

:05:11. > :05:14.both proposals, saying neither complied with the law. But ht looked

:05:15. > :05:17.like there was still hope when the Weald of Kent Grammar revealed plans

:05:18. > :05:20.to become co`educational. In Sevenoaks today the demand for

:05:21. > :05:23.places was clear. Every kid are you know dreaming to go to gramlar

:05:24. > :05:27.school. So it's important. Especially here locally. I think

:05:28. > :05:31.it's very important. My son goes to school in Sevenoaks. In six or seven

:05:32. > :05:35.years he's going to need to go to secondary school, I don't rdally

:05:36. > :05:38.want him to have to travel `ll the way to Tonbridge every day or

:05:39. > :05:41.further potentially. Is gralmar better than the state? I thhnk it

:05:42. > :05:46.depends on the teachers ulthmately and the ethos of the schools. But

:05:47. > :05:51.Kent County Council says all is not lost. Can you find a way in which

:05:52. > :05:54.you do move along the lines of what was suggested, but ensure qtite

:05:55. > :05:57.explicit my that that includes extra girls places, but not all the new

:05:58. > :06:03.places are simply boys' places. It may be possible to do something on

:06:04. > :06:07.that. With all 16 grammar schools here single sex, councils h`ve a lot

:06:08. > :06:11.of work to do to convince ehther a girls' school and a boys' school do

:06:12. > :06:19.work together, or to convince one school and its parents to go

:06:20. > :06:23.co`educational. Time now for the weather with Rachel. I keep hearing

:06:24. > :06:33.that it's going to be a nicd, warm weekend, is it?

:06:34. > :06:43.I have got good news it will be warm and sunny. Temperatures close to 20

:06:44. > :06:48.degrees and it will stay drx and feel warm with plenty hazy sunshine.

:06:49. > :06:57.Tonight dry with clearer skhes and lighter wind, so some mist `nd fog

:06:58. > :07:02.patches. Lows around six degrees. More cloud around initially, but any

:07:03. > :07:07.mist and fog burns back and it will be a bright afternoon with

:07:08. > :07:14.temperatures up to 19 kegs `` degrees. We have a south`easterly

:07:15. > :07:21.flow around 10 to 10mph. But a mild breeze. Staying dry and mild with

:07:22. > :07:25.lows of eight or nine. Any list and fog burns back and in the afternoon

:07:26. > :07:27.temperatures around 19 degrdes. Here is an outlook in the south`dast with

:07:28. > :07:33.a look at the national forward on Saturday night. Now here

:07:34. > :07:41.is Nick Miller with the national forecast.

:07:42. > :07:42.Hello. The clocks go forward this
