:00:09. > :00:11.about 7.20? Good afternoon. The family `nd

:00:12. > :00:15.friends of an 85`year`old grandfather knocked down in a hit

:00:16. > :00:19.and run incident in Kent sax the driver is "cowardly." Tom D`vis was

:00:20. > :00:22.hit by a car as he crossed the A2 in Rainham after a cycling club dinner

:00:23. > :00:29.last Friday. The grandfather is still in intensive care in hospital

:00:30. > :00:32.in London. Sara Smith reports. For Nicole and Danielle Sawhney, it s

:00:33. > :00:36.hard to believe that their `ctive and independent grandfathers, still

:00:37. > :00:40.a keen cyclist at 85, is now in intensive care. What's even harder

:00:41. > :00:44.to imagine is how anyone cotld have left him terribly injured in the

:00:45. > :00:48.road. They just left him. They just drove off and left him therd. It's

:00:49. > :00:52.terrible. Such an awful thing to do, especially to an older person. They

:00:53. > :00:57.didn't know that anybody was going to find him. He could have died on

:00:58. > :01:00.the road. It was the middle of the night, so another car could have

:01:01. > :01:03.come along and hit him becatse, because no one would have sden

:01:04. > :01:07.there's somebody in the middle of the road. So we are really tpset

:01:08. > :01:11.someone would do that to hil. Tom Davis was crossing the road to his

:01:12. > :01:14.hotel after a cycle club dinner when he was hit. He suffered a hdad

:01:15. > :01:18.injury, nine broken ribs, and bruised lungs. Now his cycld club

:01:19. > :01:21.colleagues have joined the `ppeal to find the driver. I just think it's

:01:22. > :01:27.the most cowardly thing that you could possibly do. And I hope they

:01:28. > :01:30.can live with their conscience. And I also hope that the police are

:01:31. > :01:35.lucky enough to find whoever it was and put them through due process.

:01:36. > :01:39.Because it's going to be a terrible loss to his family, otherwise. He's

:01:40. > :01:44.never going to be the same granddad again. We just hope that thdy feel

:01:45. > :01:49.guilty or somebody saw something. More of the car than what wd've

:01:50. > :01:53.found so far. And will just go to the police, come forward, and say,

:01:54. > :01:56.it was me, I did it. And just take responsibility for their actions.

:01:57. > :01:59.For his granddaughters, the priority now is that their grandfathdr

:02:00. > :02:03.recovers. Although it's still unclear how much damage will be

:02:04. > :02:08.permanent. We've been with him every day, sat with him for hours. I'm not

:02:09. > :02:14.sure he even knows we're thdre but we are with him. So I just hope he

:02:15. > :02:17.senses that and knows we want him to get better. It's thought thd car

:02:18. > :02:20.which hit Mr Davis may have been a silver Peugeot. But police say they

:02:21. > :02:28.still need more information from anyone who was there.

:02:29. > :02:31.Budget cuts and high rates of staff sickness are delaying inquests into

:02:32. > :02:35.suicides at Elmley prison on the Isle of Sheppey, according to a new

:02:36. > :02:38.report. Two inmates took thdir lives at the jail earlier this ye`r. The

:02:39. > :02:41.Independent Monitoring Board says prisoners are being kept locked in

:02:42. > :02:45.cells for longer periods because of a lack of staff, but the prhson has

:02:46. > :02:48.maintained a "safe and secure environment."

:02:49. > :02:52.New figures suggest that sotth east has seen a sharp increase in the

:02:53. > :02:55.number of people diagnosed with the most serious form of skin c`ncer.

:02:56. > :02:59.The charity Cancer Research UK says over the last 20 years the rates of

:03:00. > :03:03.people diagnosed with malignant melanoma have doubled in thd region.

:03:04. > :03:06.Mark Sanders has met one skhn cancer survivor from West Sussex, who's

:03:07. > :03:12.warning others to be careful about how much time they spend in the sun.

:03:13. > :03:18.The mole on her cheek a sign her health was at risk. Lottie Jackson

:03:19. > :03:22.was just in her 20s. I first got told I had skin cancer seven days

:03:23. > :03:27.before Christmas of 2012. And nothing can prepare you for those

:03:28. > :03:31.words. A faint scar is the only evidence of her successful surgery

:03:32. > :03:35.to remove the cancerous mold. Lottie is one of a number of growing people

:03:36. > :03:40.in the South East diagnosed with malignant melanoma. I'm livhng proof

:03:41. > :03:44.that it was caught early. I've now been clear for over a year. I will

:03:45. > :03:49.continue to be monitored. Btt, yeah, the earlier detection, the better.

:03:50. > :03:52.Cancer Research UK says over the last 20 years, the rates of people

:03:53. > :03:56.diagnosed with the most serhous form of skin cancer have doubled in the

:03:57. > :04:01.South East. Around 2,000 people develop malignant melanoma hn the

:04:02. > :04:09.region every year. In early 199 s, 750 people were diagnosed annually.

:04:10. > :04:11.One of the main reasons is the increase and affordability of

:04:12. > :04:15.holidays to hot climates. More people are going overseas, spending

:04:16. > :04:18.two weeks in the sun, and, unfortunately, getting sunbtrnt The

:04:19. > :04:23.other increase has been the availability of sunbeds. Chhldren

:04:24. > :04:28.now are even using them. And people are exposing themselves too much UV.

:04:29. > :04:31.Lottie has been given the all clear from her cancer. And she urges

:04:32. > :04:35.anyone who is concerned abott a mole to get it checked out. Nobody is

:04:36. > :04:39.saying don't go out in the sun, stay out of it completely. But know

:04:40. > :04:43.yourself and know your body. Be vigilant if you think you'vd got

:04:44. > :04:52.anything that's changing. The good news is that more than eight in ten

:04:53. > :04:54.people will now survive the disease. Football now, and in this

:04:55. > :04:57.afternoon's league fixtures, Brighton remain in the final

:04:58. > :05:01.Championship play`off place despite drawing 1`1 with Blackpool. But

:05:02. > :05:05.Charlton came from behind to win 3`2 at Sheffield Wednesday, to boost

:05:06. > :05:09.their bid to avoid relegation. In League One, Crawley lost 1`0 at

:05:10. > :05:12.Notts County. And Gillinghal drew 1`1 against Walsall.

:05:13. > :05:15.Meanwhile, there's been a great start for the three`time Brhtish

:05:16. > :05:19.Superbikes champion Shane Shakey Byrne as he aims to become the first

:05:20. > :05:21.man to win the title four thmes The 37`year`old, who's from

:05:22. > :05:25.Sittingbourne, won the first race of the season this afternoon on the

:05:26. > :05:31.shorter Indy circuit at Brands Hatch.

:05:32. > :05:40.Sunshine for him, and for us? We have had some stunning stnshine

:05:41. > :05:48.today, temperatures reaching 19 and 20. On the flip side, on thd east

:05:49. > :05:52.coast, quite cool, struggling to get into the mid`teens. Very different

:05:53. > :05:56.across the two counties tod`y. Tonight, fairly cloudy

:05:57. > :05:59.across`the`board, and we will have some outbreaks of rain. We've

:06:00. > :06:04.already had some heavy showdrs over the last couple of hours. Some

:06:05. > :06:10.thunder as well. That rain will be heavy, too, and will be persistent,

:06:11. > :06:13.staying with us until the e`rly hours of the morning. Temperatures

:06:14. > :06:18.down to nine or ten, and very similar with the nights ahe`d. So,

:06:19. > :06:25.tomorrow, some of that rain still around, but breaking up. But then we

:06:26. > :06:29.have much cloudier day tomorrow We should still have some sunnx spells,

:06:30. > :06:34.leaving us some brightness, but not as sunny as it has been tod`y. And

:06:35. > :06:40.temperatures are reflecting that. Highs of 14 or 15. Quite a bit

:06:41. > :06:46.cooler on the south coast. So, very different there. For the rest of the

:06:47. > :06:48.week, fairly unsettled weather with rain on Wednesday, showery on

:06:49. > :07:00.Thursday, but temperatures sticking in the mid`teens. But is it from

:07:01. > :07:02.us. We will be back at 1015 PM `` 10:15pm. We hope you can john us

:07:03. > :07:03.then.
