:00:09. > :15:54.It's Red Cross Week to mark the work of one of the world's oldest and
:15:55. > :15:57.best`known charities. As part of a series of events to commemorate the
:15:58. > :16:01.centenary of the first world war, an exhibition of the work of the Red
:16:02. > :16:04.Cross, past and present, has gone on display in Sussex. The charity was
:16:05. > :16:07.founded in Switzerland in 1863. During the first world war, there
:16:08. > :16:15.90,000 British volunteers who worked for the Red Cross. `` there were
:16:16. > :16:18.90,000. Today it has almost 17 million volunteers across the world.
:16:19. > :16:23.Juliette Parkin went to meet two of them who have more than 120 years of
:16:24. > :16:29.service between them. Battle casualties arrive by Red

:16:36. > :16:38.The Red Cross helping injured servicemen in North Africa during
:16:39. > :16:46.the Second World War. Joining in 1944, 70 years on, Sheila reflects
:16:47. > :16:54.on how she began volunteering during the Blitz. People were... They were
:16:55. > :17:04.hurt. And frightened. And very elderly. It was as much soothing to
:17:05. > :17:09.do as anything else. For women, the Red Cross in wartime was a chance to
:17:10. > :17:18.learn new skills, part of the journey during the First World War
:17:19. > :17:21.towards emancipation. The work of the Red Cross volunteers has
:17:22. > :17:27.featured in recent television dramas. Many of them were untrained
:17:28. > :17:38.when they arrived to nurse wounded soldiers from the front line. Today
:17:39. > :17:44.an exhibition in Uckfield marks Red Cross Week and 100 years on from the
:17:45. > :17:48.start of the First World War. Barbara joined in 1949 and is still
:17:49. > :17:52.working as a volunteer today. I think there is more need for the Red
:17:53. > :18:00.Cross today because we have neutrality and how new and Terry and
:18:01. > :18:06.`` and humanitarian and neutrality. We can go in where other parties
:18:07. > :18:11.cannot. Victims of the winter floods were helped by the Red Cross in
:18:12. > :18:17.Kent. Abroad, volunteers continue to help people rebuild their lives
:18:18. > :18:22.after the typhoon in the Philippines in November. There will always be
:18:23. > :18:28.people in a crisis. We can help now just as we did then. Its work has
:18:29. > :18:29.evolved over the decades. But this emblem and what it represents
:18:30. > :18:49.remains the same. Brighton and Hove Albion's chances
:18:50. > :18:53.of promotion to the Premier League took a knock last night when they
:18:54. > :18:55.were beaten 2`1 at home by Derby County in the first leg of their
:18:56. > :18:59.play`off semifinal. They were unlucky not to have scored
:19:00. > :19:05.more. Win on Sunday and they will make it to Wembley for the final.
:19:06. > :19:10.It had all of the ingredients required for a classic. Two teams
:19:11. > :19:15.meeting in front of a passionate crowd. The ultimate prize, a place
:19:16. > :19:18.in the Premier League worth ?120 million. Shortly after kick`off,
:19:19. > :19:24.Brighton were certain they should have had a penalty. The referee was
:19:25. > :19:30.unmoved. Not long after, Brighton's excellent start was rewarded. To the
:19:31. > :19:36.delight of the Albion fans. The trouble started ten minutes later
:19:37. > :19:44.the stop a rugged challenge. `` ten minutes later. Brighton never played
:19:45. > :19:50.as well again after that. But they were desperate the unfortunate to go
:19:51. > :19:54.behind before half`time. Brighton dominated much of the second half,
:19:55. > :20:01.but they were denied by Derby's acrobatic keeper. With time running
:20:02. > :20:10.out, he tipped over Stephen Ward's excellent drive. Hours bounced off
:20:11. > :20:17.the crossbar and did not go in. We can still do it. Keep the faith. We
:20:18. > :20:22.can do it. Still in it. We tend to play better way. Still got a chance
:20:23. > :20:28.away on Sunday. Everybody has got a chance. Game of two halves. Come
:20:29. > :20:32.on, Brighton. Disappointing result. If their season is to end on Sunday,
:20:33. > :20:37.they will want to make sure they do not go down without a fight. We want
:20:38. > :20:44.to be positive and believe that we can win. It will not be easy because
:20:45. > :20:51.they have not lost that many games. But we will go there to try
:20:52. > :20:55.everything. Another good start on Sunday and they will be right back
:20:56. > :21:03.in the game. As well as football, Brighton is in
:21:04. > :21:06.the grip of festival fever with three big events taking place at the
:21:07. > :21:09.same time. The Brighton Festival, Fringe Festival and the Great Escape
:21:10. > :21:13.Music Festival are all under way. Theatres, bars and outside spaces
:21:14. > :21:16.have all been taken over to put on shows from experimental to classical
:21:17. > :21:19.to pop. Fiona Irving is at the Spiegeltent in the heart of Brighton
:21:20. > :21:23.where people are gathering for tonight's performance. There was a
:21:24. > :21:29.special performance earlier. Yes, it was a one off, very small gig in
:21:30. > :21:32.Brighton. A secret gig. The Kaiser Chiefs said they wanted to do it
:21:33. > :21:38.because they wanted to prepare for their big European tour. I spoke to
:21:39. > :21:44.Ricky Wilson about arts in Brighton. He said art is what makes us human.
:21:45. > :21:50.If that is the case, there is lots of humanity on display here. People
:21:51. > :21:55.here are preparing to see lots of gigs. Can I just ask you, there is a
:21:56. > :22:05.big art bars in Brighton, what are you here to see? Brighton is a great
:22:06. > :22:11.time during May anyway. Lots going on. I do not know most of the
:22:12. > :22:17.bands. I must admit. There is a good buzz? It is always good around
:22:18. > :22:23.Festival time. Lots of people. Lucky because the sun is out. Have you
:22:24. > :22:29.been to other things? This is my first festival in Brighton. I have
:22:30. > :22:34.only just moved here. You may not have heard of some of the bands
:22:35. > :22:40.here, but I have been assured you may hear of them in the future.
:22:41. > :22:50.Adele performed here in 2008. Who knows, these people might be winning

:22:56. > :23:02.ceiling, forcing visitors to dance and we've their way through the
:23:03. > :23:05.labyrinth or 6000 books bound in fabric exploring immigration and
:23:06. > :23:11.culture. Brighton is currently crammed full of art, making people
:23:12. > :23:15.stop, look and think. It is about people who have made on to be shins
:23:16. > :23:20.to what we think of as British culture in all different areas of
:23:21. > :23:30.life. `` who have made contributions. Was born in Margate

:23:40. > :23:48.# I predict a riot. # The Kaiser Chiefs performed a secret
:23:49. > :23:54.gig at the festival. Brighton is a great place. It always has been.
:23:55. > :24:02.Always when you come to Brighton, there is something on. Having been a
:24:03. > :24:08.judge on the BBC show the Voice, Ricky thinks Brighton is back where
:24:09. > :24:14.he belongs. I enjoyed it, it was fun. It is nice having your own
:24:15. > :24:23.dressing room with sweets on tap and hearing Tom next door warming up. It
:24:24. > :24:27.is nice. It was a thrill but it is not where I am supposed to be. Hi
:24:28. > :24:36.you are supposed to be in Brighton doing this? `` you are supposed to
:24:37. > :24:40.be. Yes. One festival installation here sets out to create a map of
:24:41. > :24:47.happiness in Brighton. We want people to leave us a moment of
:24:48. > :24:54.happiness, tell us what it was and what happened. Brighton, art,
:24:55. > :24:59.happiness, it is a heady but vibrant mix in the city. Brighton feels very
:25:00. > :25:03.fresh and new and avant`garde, cutting edge and very arty.
:25:04. > :25:09.Thousands of people come here every year to all of the festivals to see
:25:10. > :25:12.all of the art and music and performances and thousands more will
