:00:00. > :00:12.Good Evening. Political shock waves this evening. It is

:00:13. > :00:15.Good Evening. Political shock waves are being felt round the South East

:00:16. > :00:18.following the UK Independence Party's victory in the European

:00:19. > :00:23.elections where they swept the board winning in the majority of areas.

:00:24. > :00:26.Following the success in the local elections last week, the party has

:00:27. > :00:32.turned the voting map purple across Kent and Sussex. Out of ten MEP's at

:00:33. > :00:36.the start of last night, five were Conservative. Now there are four

:00:37. > :00:39.UKIP MEPs. The Conservative Party has three. Labour, the Liberal

:00:40. > :00:46.Democrats and the Green Party have one each. In Thanet, 46% of voters

:00:47. > :00:52.voted for UKIP. Our Political Editor, Louise Stewart looks at the

:00:53. > :00:56.results. Throughout the campaign in Nigel

:00:57. > :01:02.Farage had promised his party would cause an earthquake in British

:01:03. > :01:06.politics. Today he is celebrated as UKIP did top the polls in most of

:01:07. > :01:11.the council areas across the south`east. He says it gives his

:01:12. > :01:14.party a strong base for fighting the general election. Look at the local

:01:15. > :01:17.election results that happened on Thursday and the English County

:01:18. > :01:22.election results that happened in May of last year. You do not have to

:01:23. > :01:27.be a rocket scientist to work out that in constituencies like

:01:28. > :01:32.Grimsby, Boston, Yarmouth, Thanet, Folkestone, Portsmouth, Plymouth,

:01:33. > :01:36.oh, we do like to be beside the seaside! UKIP came top of the polls

:01:37. > :01:41.in the vast majority of areas that have published their results. From

:01:42. > :01:46.Dartford to Dover to Crawley the Conservatives only topped the polls

:01:47. > :01:51.in three areas and Labour topped them in Brighton. It is clearly UKIP

:01:52. > :01:55.message has resonated with voters. There are too many immigrants in the

:01:56. > :02:01.town. I am not rise system but I think their areas. `` I am not

:02:02. > :02:05.racist. I think they have different ideas and they are putting forward

:02:06. > :02:10.and people are fed up with what is going on. I say, bring it on, Nigel.

:02:11. > :02:16.I say that because I think the major parties need to be shaken up. With

:02:17. > :02:23.an increase of 13% on the vote share in the south`east, experts say the

:02:24. > :02:26.surge in popularity of UKIP must be taken seriously. David Cameron has a

:02:27. > :02:30.massive task on his hands in the south`east because people do not

:02:31. > :02:34.believe he can deliver in Europe and immigration the kind of policies

:02:35. > :02:37.that UKIP are promising. UKIP cannot deliver them either but people

:02:38. > :02:41.currently think that UKIP are the new kid on the block and they are

:02:42. > :02:45.exciting and Mr Cameron's party looks old`fashioned and jaded. The

:02:46. > :02:48.current MP in the area who is standing down does not believe that

:02:49. > :02:55.South Thanet is an easy target for UKIP. It is a conservative majority

:02:56. > :02:59.and it is between the Conservatives and Labour but he will make his

:03:00. > :03:03.choice and I am sure that we will respond accordingly. As the dust

:03:04. > :03:07.settles on these election results Nigel Farage will have to decide

:03:08. > :03:11.whether to stand in the south`east at the general election. Wherever he

:03:12. > :03:14.does choose will be a key battle ground for all of the parties.

:03:15. > :03:22.Well, Louise Stewart joins us now from Crawley. A historic night for

:03:23. > :03:27.UKIP. Could this be replicated in a general election?

:03:28. > :03:32.There is no doubt it was a really good night for UKIP at the polls and

:03:33. > :03:36.I think because of that support base and in places like Sussex and Kent

:03:37. > :03:40.Nigel Farage is increasingly looking as though he will stand in this

:03:41. > :03:44.region and possibly in South Thanet. It is quite difficult to

:03:45. > :03:48.extrapolate from the results we've had in the past few days how people

:03:49. > :03:54.would vote in the general election. Look here in Crawley, a big victory

:03:55. > :03:57.for Labour in Crawley and they took more seats than predicted and seize

:03:58. > :04:01.control of the council back from the Conservatives and they said that it

:04:02. > :04:05.put them in a strong position for the next general election. UKIP when

:04:06. > :04:09.they were on Thursday night but last night they topped the poll is there.

:04:10. > :04:13.What I think it shows is that people vote differently at local and

:04:14. > :04:17.European elections than they do when it comes to choosing their next

:04:18. > :04:25.government. Many thanks. You can find out more

:04:26. > :04:28.on our website. The National Trust says an important

:04:29. > :04:34.wildlife habitat near Brighton could take years to recover after an

:04:35. > :04:37.illegal rave was held there. A large group descended on Devils Dyke for a

:04:38. > :04:41.party over the weekend. Sussex Police said it couldn't close the

:04:42. > :04:50.event down given the officers it had available. Mark Sanders reports.

:04:51. > :04:54.A rave on the Southdown is. At its height around 2000 people attended

:04:55. > :04:59.the illegal party at Devils Dyke this weekend and there were about

:05:00. > :05:07.400 vehicles. This is the cost, an important habitat is damaged. The

:05:08. > :05:13.site is important. It is a site of special scientific interest for its

:05:14. > :05:16.chalk grassland. Where vehicles have been, they have trashed that

:05:17. > :05:20.grassland under no end of damage that could take five or ten years to

:05:21. > :05:24.recover. The National Trust has started

:05:25. > :05:28.fixing fencing that was cut over the weekend. It owns and manages this

:05:29. > :05:32.land. Rubbish has been left right across the site and The National

:05:33. > :05:37.Trust is asking people to come on Wednesday to help volunteers clear

:05:38. > :05:40.it up. There were complaints from nearby residents about noise from

:05:41. > :05:44.the rave but the Sussex Police said they could not close the event down

:05:45. > :05:49.given the number of police officers available. The force said it tried

:05:50. > :05:54.to contain the gathering. Today walkers at the beauty spot were

:05:55. > :05:57.dismayed by what they found. It is a disgrace, they have all come down

:05:58. > :06:04.here and lifted and not cared about it. It puts people off because

:06:05. > :06:08.people I ask if they want to go camping and they will not allow

:06:09. > :06:11.anything like that again. In terms of damage to the chalk grassland,

:06:12. > :06:15.The National Trust believe that the effects of a weekend of partying

:06:16. > :06:19.could last for years. Police say they want to speak to

:06:20. > :06:23.three men who used a sheet to break the fall of a woman who jumped two

:06:24. > :06:26.storeys from a burning building in Hastings. The fire broke out in the

:06:27. > :06:29.early hours of Sunday in Marine Parade and spread to neighbouring

:06:30. > :06:33.properties. The 66`year`old woman jumped around 40 feet from a window

:06:34. > :06:37.and is currently in a critical condition in hospital.

:06:38. > :06:40.Police in Kent are investigating a serious collision in Gravesend.

:06:41. > :06:44.Officers were called to Earl Road shortly after 5am on Saturday after

:06:45. > :06:51.a BMW crashed into a wall and traffic lights near the junction

:06:52. > :06:53.with Perry Street. The driver, a 26`year`old man, was taken to a

:06:54. > :06:59.London hospital with life`threatening injuries.

:07:00. > :07:03.That is the news. Let us get an update on the weather now.

:07:04. > :07:07.That is the news. Let us get an This bank holiday in historic and

:07:08. > :07:11.the most dodgy bank holiday of the whole year because it is the start

:07:12. > :07:14.of the European monsoon, where every year at the end of Main and

:07:15. > :07:17.throughout the end of June we get waves of wet weather which

:07:18. > :07:21.scientists believe it's because of ice sheets melting in Greenland as

:07:22. > :07:25.they do every year at this time of year. It is also because the

:07:26. > :07:30.European landmasses eating which creates low pressure which is

:07:31. > :07:35.exactly what we have got this week. Take a look at the charts. We are in

:07:36. > :07:38.a low`pressure sandwich with the lows bouncing around us all week

:07:39. > :07:42.long so it will stay cloudy and there is a lot more wet weather to

:07:43. > :07:47.as well. It is cloudy now and rainy now and it will not change a lot. It

:07:48. > :07:50.is going to be wet overnight tonight and sometimes it will become a bit

:07:51. > :07:56.drier but we will always have the rain never far away. At least the

:07:57. > :08:04.temperatures are mild, down to 11 or 12. Tomorrow I doubt you will see

:08:05. > :08:09.any sunshine, it is just going to be a cloudy start and fairly wet at

:08:10. > :08:14.times. There are heavy showers as well. Some places will get less rain

:08:15. > :08:19.than today and others will get more so it depends whether showers are.

:08:20. > :08:24.The temperatures are disappointing. As we go into Wednesday there is not

:08:25. > :08:27.a great deal of change. More low`pressure coming towards us so

:08:28. > :08:32.some places will have drier interludes and a chance of getting a

:08:33. > :08:35.bit of brightness where we could get temperatures up to 18 degrees. Maybe

:08:36. > :08:40.a slight improvement on Wednesday but you are going to have to have

:08:41. > :08:45.your umbrellas close by throughout the week. Rain on and off throughout

:08:46. > :08:48.the week but do not book tickets to Honolulu just yet because towards

:08:49. > :08:53.the end of the week there is a hint that high pressure could start to

:08:54. > :08:56.build. Perhaps it will be sunny at the end of the week and the weekend

:08:57. > :09:02.and even next week. Something to look forward to. At last!

:09:03. > :09:06.Just to recap on our top story. UKIP are celebrating in the south`east,

:09:07. > :09:10.having taken significant gains on the political map here in Kent and

:09:11. > :09:22.Sussex. You can find out much more if you want to if you go to our

:09:23. > :09:25.website. You can also tweet us. That is it from us, we will be back later

:09:26. > :09:29.on this evening, goodbye.
