:00:10. > :00:13.Major expansion plans for Ndwhaven Port have been proposed that could

:00:14. > :00:17.It's hoped it will bring thd town a big economic boost

:00:18. > :00:19.and help secure its cross`channel ferry service to Dieppe.

:00:20. > :00:22.But some residents have gredted the plans with trepidation, because

:00:23. > :00:27.the Port's owners are refushng to reopen the town's beach.

:00:28. > :00:29.This rather delapidated are` of Newhaven's harbour would be

:00:30. > :00:32.transformed by the new expansion plans hnto

:00:33. > :00:34.a multi`purpose quayside, bringing new business to the town and even

:00:35. > :00:43.potentially providing a replacement for the current ferry terminal.

:00:44. > :00:51.New Haven is on its way up `nd the key to that, as always, is `s a

:00:52. > :00:56.port, it has been ticking over but it does need some money spent on it.

:00:57. > :00:57.Now we have good plans to m`ke sure we ground at the future in terms of

:00:58. > :00:59.freight movements. But the proposals are being

:01:00. > :01:02.overshadowed because the Frdnch company who owns the Port

:01:03. > :01:04.and surrounding land refuses to reopen the local beach, which was

:01:05. > :01:07.closed in 2008 on safety grounds. The ensuing legal battle catsed

:01:08. > :01:09.animosity towards the company and today there was

:01:10. > :01:17.a mixed reaction to their plans I think the development thex want to

:01:18. > :01:22.do is very good, but we defhnitely want the beach back, that would be a

:01:23. > :01:26.good thing. If that could hdlp the local community and the unelployment

:01:27. > :01:31.that would be very positive. The town is so opposed to them that I

:01:32. > :01:33.think they are going to havd a bit of a struggle.

:01:34. > :01:35.But one local councillor believes matters shouldn't be confusdd.

:01:36. > :01:38.Newhaven Port and Properties won't comment on reopening the be`ch

:01:39. > :01:42.until a decision is made in the Supreme Court in Novdmber.

:01:43. > :01:45.Meanwhile, they'll be putting their expansion plans out

:01:46. > :01:55.Plans to build up to 5,000 homes on a part of the Hoo Peninstla,

:01:56. > :01:57.that's said to be key to thd UK s nightingale population,

:01:58. > :02:01.have been described as "astonishing" by the Wildlife Trust.

:02:02. > :02:04.The proposals were blocked last year when the area was declared ` Site

:02:05. > :02:07.of Special Scientific Interdst, but last night they were approved

:02:08. > :02:13.They will now be referred to the Government.

:02:14. > :02:15.The Brighton Speed trials h`ve gone ahead today, after they werd

:02:16. > :02:17.cancelled last year following the death of a competitor.

:02:18. > :02:20.The Council has reinstated the race after thousands signed a petition.

:02:21. > :02:26.It's thought to be one of the oldest motor sport events in the country.

:02:27. > :02:28.The head of the Freight Transport Association says

:02:29. > :02:31.the problem of migrants in Calais trying to reach Kent is the worst

:02:32. > :02:34.he's seen for 20 years and hs calling for more government action.

:02:35. > :02:35.His comments come amid rising tensions.

:02:36. > :02:51.Calais and a migrant tries to jump on a lorry bound the Kent. Loments

:02:52. > :02:57.later, another brazen attempt to gain illegal entry to the UK. Those

:02:58. > :03:00.involved in the freight transport industry are now calling further

:03:01. > :03:04.urgent attention from the British and French governments. The migrant

:03:05. > :03:08.situation is the worst we h`ve known at the Freight Transport Association

:03:09. > :03:14.in 20 years. This has escal`ted in the past few months from a

:03:15. > :03:18.continuing background nuisance into a serious international isste.

:03:19. > :03:24.Earlier this week 250 migrants try to storm a UK bound ferry, the mayor

:03:25. > :03:28.of Calais threatened to blockade the Port unless the UK helped to control

:03:29. > :03:32.the numbers of migrants. But former Home Secretary, Lloyd Howard, says

:03:33. > :03:36.France must improve its border control. We had an agreement with

:03:37. > :03:40.France under which if peopld came to the United Kingdom from France, and

:03:41. > :03:46.claimed asylum, we would return them to France and France were ddalt ``

:03:47. > :03:53.will deal with their claim. France is a member of the agreement. That

:03:54. > :03:57.agreement allows passport free movement across much of Europe and

:03:58. > :04:04.with an increased this presdnt in Calais, tensions are running high.

:04:05. > :04:08.Just one football results. Crawley's game at home finished in a

:04:09. > :04:11.disappointing 4`0. Time to the weather.

:04:12. > :04:14.Some of us are having a brighter end to the day.

:04:15. > :04:17.Elsewhere, it is still holdhng onto that cloud and that cotld

:04:18. > :04:21.We have a clearer start and it will cloud over later.

:04:22. > :04:24.We have some clear spells around, even once that cloud does btild

:04:25. > :04:26.allowing that mist to develop once more.

:04:27. > :04:28.Temperatures down to about 02 or 13 Celsius, remaining largely dry.

:04:29. > :04:31.Tomorrow, there will be some brighter spells

:04:32. > :04:34.at times, and we have an arda of cloud that is gradually sinking

:04:35. > :04:39.You might see some showers around that, too.

:04:40. > :04:41.That means the afternoon is going to be a little more

:04:42. > :04:45.It gradually passes, so hopefully some late sunshine with

:04:46. > :04:50.Monday is looking quite find, we have plenty of sunshine

:04:51. > :04:58.but cloud starts to build again from Tuesday onwards.

:04:59. > :05:03.That is also the moment. We will be back tomorrow evening with our next

:05:04. > :05:17.update. Enjoy your weekend. Goodbye. Good evening. It was a mixed bag to

:05:18. > :05:18.start the weekend. The
