:00:48. > :00:57.a decade tracking down the recipe for his perfect sausage.

:01:01. > :01:22.We start tonight with breakhng news ` police officers are investigating

:01:23. > :01:26.Armed police have been sent to the scene in Northiam, near Rye

:01:27. > :01:29.It's believed a girl has bedn shot in the head and has bedn

:01:30. > :01:42.It is believed that a body of a man believed to be the girl 's father is

:01:43. > :01:43.also at the scene. Let's cross live to our reporter

:01:44. > :01:57.Simon Jones in Northiam. What do we know so far?

:01:58. > :02:02.The police and emergency services were called at about 4pm thhs

:02:03. > :02:05.afternoon. The girl who was shot has been taken to hospital. She is said

:02:06. > :02:16.to be and a stable elite back serious condition. `` in a serious

:02:17. > :02:22.condition. There is a huge `mount of police cars behind us who h`ve been

:02:23. > :02:26.taking part in this operation. There has also been a bomb dispos`l team

:02:27. > :02:30.because this is a major armdd incident. We know from local people

:02:31. > :02:33.that they were told to stay away from this scene. The key thhng for

:02:34. > :02:39.the police was to make sure this area was as safe as possibld as they

:02:40. > :02:44.dealt with this incident. You can see behind me that it is sthll

:02:45. > :02:49.ongoing. All the police cars and ambulances. Neighbours I have spoken

:02:50. > :02:58.to spoke of their shock. Thdy simply heard to stay away. They did share

:02:59. > :03:00.that this girl was shot. Th`nk you. We will give you more inforlation as

:03:01. > :03:02.we get it. The family of a Kent school teacher

:03:03. > :03:05.and former Royal Marine killed on the French island of Reunion have

:03:06. > :03:08.told today of their heartbrdak after it was revealed a murder trhal will

:03:09. > :03:11.not now take place until next year, When Carl Davies' body was hnitially

:03:12. > :03:16.discovered in November 2011, it was But a week later, police latnched

:03:17. > :03:19.a murder investigation. Ellie Price has

:03:20. > :03:28.our exclusive report. Carl Davies was 33 when he died on

:03:29. > :03:31.Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Today his family have been told

:03:32. > :03:36.the four men charged with his murder will go on trial,

:03:37. > :03:44.but not until next year. We are living

:03:45. > :03:46.a nightmare that is never ending and you want to wake up some daxs and

:03:47. > :03:50.say, get me off, I've had enough. I'd like to wake up one day

:03:51. > :03:52.and feel normal. That's not something that any

:03:53. > :04:01.of us have been able to do. Do you think the trial will

:04:02. > :04:04.at least go somewhere towards I think it will help us to rebuild

:04:05. > :04:10.our lives around his memory Carl Davis was found dead

:04:11. > :04:14.on French`governed Reunion Police initially said it was

:04:15. > :04:19.an accident. Just over a week later, thex

:04:20. > :04:22.launched a murder investigation Then, last year, four peopld

:04:23. > :04:26.were charged with his murder. It took

:04:27. > :04:30.a whole year to discover th`t in fact his murder was related to

:04:31. > :04:34.a series of aggressions in the city The family have no firm datd

:04:35. > :04:42.for the trial, but expect it to Four years is

:04:43. > :04:47.an incredibly long length of time for a hearing of a criminal trial

:04:48. > :04:50.and certainly a great deal longer The difficulty is that very often

:04:51. > :04:56.with these jurisdictions on small islands, they take their

:04:57. > :04:59.time to progress and unforttnately, if it is four years, then that is

:05:00. > :05:05.what it is going to have to be. The trial itself is so complex

:05:06. > :05:08.and there's a lot of people So we know this is probably going to

:05:09. > :05:12.be the biggest trial that For that, we are kind of gr`teful

:05:13. > :05:20.that it is being done properly. The family say they will tr`vel to

:05:21. > :05:28.Reunion for the trial next xear The plan to create more lorry parks

:05:29. > :05:44.in East Sussex. Southeastern will continue to run

:05:45. > :05:47.trains in Kent and Sussex until at least 2018, it has been announced

:05:48. > :05:50.today, despite the controversy and criticism levelled at them over

:05:51. > :05:52.poor performance in bad weather But the company has been forced to

:05:53. > :05:55.promise a raft of improvements for the deal, including that

:05:56. > :05:58.they'll provide about 95,000 extra It has to offer improved connections

:05:59. > :06:05.between London, North Kent and East Kent with

:06:06. > :06:11.a new hourly high`speed service And there will be

:06:12. > :06:13.a peak`time Hastings Business Express, cutting ten minutes off the

:06:14. > :06:21.current journey time into London. We're asking a lot, actuallx, from

:06:22. > :06:24.people travelling on Southe`stern. We've got the biggest engindering

:06:25. > :06:27.set of works going on in th`t we've London Bridge Station is behng

:06:28. > :06:31.completely redeveloped and will have a concourse bigger then Wembley

:06:32. > :06:33.Stadium when it is finished. We are asking a lot from thdm

:06:34. > :06:36.and it is important that at the time of investment, at the time

:06:37. > :06:41.of changes on the track, thdy get an operator who is really committed

:06:42. > :06:43.to their journey, to making But the announcement comes `s it was

:06:44. > :06:50.revealed that every day abott 120,000 people travelling into

:06:51. > :06:53.London have to stand at the busiest As many as 60%

:06:54. > :06:56.of morning peak trains into the capital have passengers

:06:57. > :06:58.standing, with one`in`five Southeastern commuters standing

:06:59. > :07:02.when they reach London Bridge and around one`in`ten are standing

:07:03. > :07:06.on arrival at London Victorha. The MP for Hastings and Rye Amber

:07:07. > :07:09.Rudd says the company deserve It is a short period of these three

:07:10. > :07:22.and a half years. and they have made these very new

:07:23. > :07:25.commitments with money behind it. There is a new chief executhve and I

:07:26. > :07:29.can tell you that I will be watching them very,

:07:30. > :07:31.very carefully and if they don't deliver, I will be the first person

:07:32. > :07:34.to go to Government and complaint. But I think we have to give them

:07:35. > :07:48.a shot, and we hope The passenger I have spoken to this

:07:49. > :07:53.afternoon have said that Southeastern don't deserve `nother

:07:54. > :07:58.three years. They cited problems like rising season`ticket prices.

:07:59. > :08:01.The company have said they have taken on more staff to provhde more

:08:02. > :08:03.information to their passengers and that they are committed to hmproving

:08:04. > :08:07.their services. Southeastern say they have one

:08:08. > :08:09.of the lowest levels of overcrowding for train companies

:08:10. > :08:11.that serve London. The new franchise deal means it will

:08:12. > :08:13.continue to operate services Tributes have paid to former Primal

:08:14. > :08:19.Scream musician Robert Young after he was found dead at his hole in

:08:20. > :08:26.Hove. The guitarist played on the band's Mercury Prize`winning album

:08:27. > :08:29.Screamadelica. he left the band in 2006. His death is not being treated

:08:30. > :08:33.as suspicious. A Kent MP says the money generated

:08:34. > :08:37.from bank fines should be used to support Gurkha veterans forced to

:08:38. > :08:39.survive without army pensions. Campaigners say

:08:40. > :08:44.the amount received by some Gurkhas During a debate in the Commons,

:08:45. > :08:50.Folkestone and Hythe MP, Damian Collins, said it's only

:08:51. > :09:06.right, as the cash already supports That money is there to support

:09:07. > :09:13.military charities. They ard very deserving cause and an appropriate

:09:14. > :09:16.one. I would ask us to sit `nd look seriously at that as an opportunity.

:09:17. > :09:19.A network of lorry parks cotld be built across Kent to stop hdavy

:09:20. > :09:22.goods vehicles queuing on the M 0 when there's disruption at the Port

:09:23. > :09:25.of Dover. It's an alternative to one huge lorry park that had formerly

:09:26. > :09:29.been proposed. The Council's shortlisted three possible sites for

:09:30. > :09:32.the first park: They includd the Whitecliffs Business Park in Dover,

:09:33. > :09:35.a site at Westenhanger on the M 0 and the land next to the Ashford

:09:36. > :09:39.International Truck Stop. It's hoped it would also help residents who say

:09:40. > :09:42.their lives are blighted by trucks parking up at night outside their

:09:43. > :10:05.You have to watch where you tread at the back of this woman's hotse. That

:10:06. > :10:13.is revolting. The market and fluids here are human. They come and have

:10:14. > :10:16.their supper and then they throw it over. Then they have their breakfast

:10:17. > :10:23.and throw it over again. And then they go to the toilet and off they

:10:24. > :10:30.go. But it is hope to eradicate this problem by building a network of new

:10:31. > :10:34.lorry parks. They hope the plan will help them when there are

:10:35. > :10:41.disruptions. At the moment, a backlog of Laura's has to bd parked

:10:42. > :10:46.on the carriageway. The reshdents aren't sure it will work. This man

:10:47. > :10:52.is plagued at night by the sound of these lorries. It is just

:10:53. > :10:58.unbearable. The noise is unbearable. The new car parks will charge and he

:10:59. > :11:01.doesn't think drivers will pay. I think it is important that parking

:11:02. > :11:07.facilities are provided but I don't think that this should be a charged

:11:08. > :11:13.parking lot for drivers bec`use I think there will still be a problem.

:11:14. > :11:18.Others support the plan. Provided that these facilities are s`fe and

:11:19. > :11:22.secure, and they are set at a reasonable price, we think ht will

:11:23. > :11:32.be used. The current facilities in the county are full five to seven

:11:33. > :11:37.nights of the week. It will solve a good part of the problem. Wd want to

:11:38. > :11:42.see legislation that will allow the situation in the UK to be shmilar to

:11:43. > :11:50.that on the continent where informal parking is simply not toler`ted A

:11:51. > :11:52.huge loan will fund this project. A final decision on which sitd will be

:11:53. > :11:55.used will be made next week. Jon Hunt reporting and he joins us

:11:56. > :11:59.now ` this problem has been going on for years, Jon ` will this solution

:12:00. > :12:13.work? It's going to help. In the dvent

:12:14. > :12:18.that phase two of his operation is introduced, the council will be

:12:19. > :12:25.short of around 400 lorries basis. That is assuming that euro title and

:12:26. > :12:29.the port of Dover expand thdir lorry parking as has been suggestdd. The

:12:30. > :12:33.question is whether lorry drivers will be prepared to pay and

:12:34. > :12:37.therefore will not use thesd lay buys outside of peoples homds. That

:12:38. > :12:43.is a trickier question. One lorry driver that I spoke to told me that

:12:44. > :12:46.his firm doesn't pay him to park his lorry and therefore any parking

:12:47. > :12:49.costs come out of his wages. In just one week's time the people

:12:50. > :12:52.in Scotland will make an historic decision ` voting on whether to

:12:53. > :12:57.remain part of the United Khngdom ` or to become an independent nation.

:12:58. > :13:02.In the past 24 hours, Lloyds, RBS, Clydesdale, and Tesco Bank have

:13:03. > :13:05.all said that if Scotland votes for independence, they would move their

:13:06. > :13:09.legal headquarters south of the border. So what impact might the

:13:10. > :13:13.referendum have here in the South East? Our political editor Louise

:13:14. > :13:25.Stewart has been finding out: With just one week until voters in

:13:26. > :13:30.Scotland have the opportunity to decide their future, the st`kes have

:13:31. > :13:38.never been higher or both c`mps It is a contentious issue not just

:13:39. > :13:43.north of the border but herdto. At this company near Dartford that to

:13:44. > :13:47.make a ballot boxes and sectrity seals, some of which will bd used by

:13:48. > :13:51.local authorities for the rdferendum next week. Like many companhes that

:13:52. > :13:55.trade with the Scotland, thdy are concerned about the uncertahnty

:13:56. > :14:01.Nobody knows at the moment what this will mean for people. What currency

:14:02. > :14:10.would come into play? Will we become part of the EE you? `` well being.

:14:11. > :14:15.We have different ways of ddaling with these customers. When people in

:14:16. > :14:18.Scotland go to the polls, pdople here won't have their say at the

:14:19. > :14:24.ballot box. That doesn't me`n they don't have strong opinions on the

:14:25. > :14:27.future of the UK. I went to this town to ask whether Scotland should

:14:28. > :14:34.remain in the union or becole independent. I think we shotld

:14:35. > :14:40.remain united. Financially, as well as anything else. Apart frol that, I

:14:41. > :14:47.like the Scots. EMac I think they are better staying with us. They can

:14:48. > :14:53.sustain themselves. Their social policies aren't better than our

:14:54. > :15:00.social policies `` are bettdr than ours and they should go for it. This

:15:01. > :15:06.will be felt on both sides of the border. People here live closer to

:15:07. > :15:12.Edinburgh than they do to c`n't If the Scots got independence, they

:15:13. > :15:17.might say they want devoluthon. Consequences will be enormots.

:15:18. > :15:18.Whatever the outcome next wdek, it will have a long term and whde

:15:19. > :15:29.reaching effect. This is tonight's top story. Armed

:15:30. > :15:34.police are at the scene of ` shooting in Northiam. A girl has

:15:35. > :15:38.been shot in the head and t`ken to hospital. A body of the man believed

:15:39. > :15:51.to be her father has also bden found.

:15:52. > :15:56.Also in tonight 's programmd. She is still living the good life.

:15:57. > :16:03.Felicity Kendal swaps the shtcom for the stage.

:16:04. > :16:05.And is automotive around thd corner. I will have details for you around

:16:06. > :16:21.the corner. `` autumn. The mild winter and warm sulmer led

:16:22. > :16:24.to a bumper crop of strawberries this summer, but there are fears

:16:25. > :16:27.that climate change could m`ke that a rarity in the future. Now

:16:28. > :16:30.scientists in Kent are experimenting with how to keep crops growhng well

:16:31. > :16:33.in drought conditions ` with fungus. For the latest in our Food Chain

:16:34. > :16:35.series, our environment correspondent Yvette Austin reports

:16:36. > :16:38.on how science is trying to help Strawberry plants growing

:16:39. > :16:40.under special conditions. Their light, water

:16:41. > :16:42.and food are strictly controlled The aim is to reduce the amount of

:16:43. > :16:46.water used, and they've discovered that feeding them friendly fungus

:16:47. > :16:54.makes them healthier. We are stressing the plants as much

:16:55. > :16:57.as possible and we are feedhng them with the friendly fungus

:16:58. > :17:01.which is helping the plants to resist the stress and we manage that

:17:02. > :17:08.way to reduce the water and keep Friendly fungus is found

:17:09. > :17:15.in any soil. One teaspoon contains 20 metres

:17:16. > :17:18.of it, if strung together. But intensive farming reducds

:17:19. > :17:23.that number, so the idea is to add it back into the soil where crops

:17:24. > :17:27.may face stress like drought. On a commercial system,

:17:28. > :17:30.we need so much water to grow just a single strawberry,

:17:31. > :17:35.but with our method, we havd managed So now the method is being tested,

:17:36. > :17:43.ready for commercial production using

:17:44. > :17:47.sterile coconut husks for soil. They don't have any harmful

:17:48. > :17:52.bacteria, so there are no The problem with that is th`t there

:17:53. > :17:58.are also no beneficial fung`l bacteria in there,

:17:59. > :18:01.so we're putting the beneficial fungi without the plant disdase

:18:02. > :18:06.fungi back into the growing material The new growing techniques `re being

:18:07. > :18:11.developed to help growers prepare for future climatic change

:18:12. > :18:15.and increasing demands for food Especially here, in the southeast,

:18:16. > :18:21.there are many demands on ways of overcoming that problem and

:18:22. > :18:25.giving us more food for the future. It is expected that

:18:26. > :18:30.the friendly fungus will go on to help other plants grow

:18:31. > :18:53.and increase our food securhty. Brands Hatch saw some of thd slowest

:18:54. > :18:56.lap times ever recorded tod`y, but even so, thousands of pounds were

:18:57. > :18:59.raised for charity. The Kent circuit staged the fourth Cyclothon event

:19:00. > :19:01.which attracted over 350 competitors, including a nulber of

:19:02. > :19:04.former international rugby players. Amongst today's first timers was

:19:05. > :19:14.former England skipper Mike It is always good to get back into

:19:15. > :19:18.an time of the lads I used to play with. You can rekindle some of those

:19:19. > :19:23.friendships. All of the charities on display today are fabulous charities

:19:24. > :19:26.and worthwhile causes. If you have the spare time in your diarx to do

:19:27. > :19:36.something you don't normallx do you get out there and do it.

:19:37. > :19:39.Cricket now, and Sussex all`rounder Chris Jordan has been awarddd a

:19:40. > :19:42.contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Jordan's deal covers

:19:43. > :19:45.the next 12 months, but his county team mate Matt Prior has lost his

:19:46. > :20:00.contract, having voluntarilx quit the England test team this summer. It

:20:01. > :20:02.Welsh international midfielder Andrew Crofts has signed a one`year

:20:03. > :20:05.contract extension with Brighton Hove Albion. The deal means Crofts,

:20:06. > :20:08.who's in his second spell at the Championship club, will stax with

:20:09. > :20:10.the Seagulls until June 2016. In the '70s, she was the

:20:11. > :20:13.self`sufficient suburban hotsewife a generation fell in love with. But

:20:17. > :20:19.Marlowe Theatre, for Noel Coward's Hay Fever, before it transfdrs to

:20:20. > :20:22.Brighton. Nafisa Sayani went to meet her.

:20:23. > :20:27.Are you sure it's not just a big brussels sprout?

:20:28. > :20:30.She captured hearts as Barb`ra in the '70s sitcom The Good Life

:20:31. > :20:33.and now Felicity Kendal is still a sweetheart of the screen

:20:34. > :20:39.This week, she stars in the play Hay Fdver

:20:40. > :20:48.Noel Coward is a genius writer and it isn't so much the ch`racter,

:20:49. > :20:57.it is how he puts the whole evening together that attracts me.

:20:58. > :21:01.In the comedy revival about an eccentric family's weekend

:21:02. > :21:04.at their rural retreat, Felicity plays recently rethred

:21:05. > :21:24.I couldn't see why I would want to do it. I don't particularly like

:21:25. > :21:25.acting, which is why he turned it down.

:21:26. > :21:27.This is an actress that really loves acting,

:21:28. > :21:30.which is why I decided I want to play her because I wanted to see

:21:31. > :21:40.if I could convince in a ch`racter that is not really like me.

:21:41. > :21:43.Her career spans more than 45 years, included a stint on Strictlx

:21:44. > :21:49.in 2010, something she describes as an impulse decision.

:21:50. > :21:53.I loved every minute of it, to me it was actually getting away

:21:54. > :21:57.I know the costumes are glalourous and everything,

:21:58. > :22:04.The fun was to learn somethhng new with these amazing teachers

:22:05. > :22:08.and to be part of the world that I would never have anything to do

:22:09. > :22:15.The play will be at the Marlowe until this Saturday and with

:22:16. > :22:36.Felicity on board, it's unlhkely to struggle to bring in an audhence.

:22:37. > :22:41.And they will move onto sevdral different theatres. Find out more on

:22:42. > :22:50.to several different theatrds. Find out more online. And it's jtst
