:02:45. > :02:52.what happened. I had been in for five minutes and heard a gunshot. I

:02:53. > :02:57.then looked out of my window, because I heard somebody shouting

:02:58. > :03:04.help me. I saw a lady sitting on the grass, cradling her young child The

:03:05. > :03:09.shooter has stunned this colmunity. Donna Ward's daughter played with

:03:48. > :03:53.domestic event. I thought it was kids messing about. I heard

:03:54. > :03:57.screaming. It wasn't, so I looked out of the window and saw a crowd

:03:58. > :04:03.forming. I knew it was serious. I went out to investigate and the bad

:04:04. > :04:14.news was there. The question from many people was simply wide. It is

:04:15. > :04:26.terrible. Why was she shot? `` was simply, why. It is scandalots. The

:04:27. > :04:34.child remains in a life`thrdatening condition in hospital. As I

:04:35. > :04:47.mentioned, the Laurie has ldft within the last few minutes, taken

:04:48. > :04:52.whether it's the gunman's c`r `` lorry. The victim was a student at a

:04:53. > :04:57.primary school just a coupld of miles from where I'm standing. This

:04:58. > :05:03.statement from the primary school. This is a sad and shocking hncident

:05:04. > :05:08.and the whole team unity ard praying for her and by her family. That is a

:05:09. > :05:13.sentiment which is echoed bx everyone I've spoken to.

:05:14. > :05:15.More than 300 people have bden the victims

:05:16. > :05:17.of serious mistakes being m`de in Kent's Hospitals last ye`r BBC

:05:29. > :05:32.incidents where surgical instruments were left in patients, and dven

:05:33. > :05:48.It is every patient is's nightmare that going into hospital max

:05:49. > :05:52.increase their chance of harm. While these hospitals carry out thousands

:05:53. > :05:59.of successful procedures e.g., we know last year 374 went wrong.

:06:00. > :06:03.Incidents include the tip of a scalpel been left in a patidnt after

:06:04. > :06:06.breaking off, the wrong kned replacement being fitted and a

:06:07. > :06:13.biopsy being taken from the wrong site. Colin Chandler's fathdr had

:06:14. > :06:18.the worst happened to him. When doctors treated the wrong lhne at

:06:19. > :06:30.the bit of one collapsed `` long, and he died. It was terribld.

:06:31. > :06:34.Possible say they have learned lessons and we have been invited to

:06:35. > :06:40.talk to them. The new figurds come from a Freedom of information

:06:41. > :06:43.request. These aren't inciddnts caused by individual errors but when

:06:44. > :06:49.the systems, designed to protect patients, breakdown. This mddical

:06:50. > :06:55.accident charity wants hosphtals to be much more open in the future

:06:56. > :06:59.What we want to see is the results of investigations that the NHS have

:07:00. > :07:04.carried out, and the practical steps they have taken as a result, to make

:07:05. > :07:10.things safer for other patidnts Almost everyone who comes to our

:07:11. > :07:15.charity, says they want to see things safer for other patidnts for

:07:16. > :07:20.the safety not to be allowed to happen again. Two out of fotr Kent

:07:21. > :07:25.trust didn't want to respond to the figures. The other two said

:07:26. > :07:33.protecting patients was a priority and they did learn from stakes. For

:07:34. > :07:37.family such as the Chandler two that is all they want to sed.

:07:38. > :07:41.The smell of another strike is in the air in Brighton and Hove

:07:42. > :07:48.as refuse workers begin a fresh wave of industrial `ction.

:07:49. > :07:51.A man who rescued a mother and her young children from a fire

:07:52. > :07:54.in the middle of the night has been hailed a hero by their fathdr.

:07:55. > :07:57.Michael Foster says the acthons of Wade Eason saved the family's lives.

:07:58. > :08:00.It happened in Brighton in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and

:08:01. > :08:03.today the family got the ch`nce to thank their rescuer face to face.

:08:04. > :08:12.I can't thank you enough for what you did there, matd.

:08:13. > :08:15.Michael Foster says he'll bd eternally grateful to his ndighbour,

:08:16. > :08:17.who he says saved his children's lives.

:08:18. > :08:20.At first, it just seemed to be shouting, a sound

:08:21. > :08:34.I poked my head out to say to keep it down, people are trying to sleep,

:08:35. > :08:36.and when I came around I realise it was serhous

:08:37. > :08:39.Mike was shouting, I need hdlp, I need help.

:08:40. > :08:43.He got a ladder up against the porch onto the little window, got everyone

:08:44. > :08:48.While he was there, he got the kids out and passed thel down.

:08:49. > :08:52.Trapped inside were his girlfriend and his two children

:08:53. > :08:59.Three`year`old Courtney and two`year`old Ethan.

:09:00. > :09:03.After the fire brigade were called, I went to the front door,

:09:04. > :09:06.and I could see all the smoke and flames in the kitchen.

:09:07. > :09:11.I ran round the back to double`check it and saw through the kitchen door

:09:12. > :09:22.I remember thinking, I've got a ladder.

:09:23. > :09:23.I don't remember thinking anything else.

:09:24. > :09:26.I think it was more the desperation and the way Michael

:09:27. > :09:33.Michael and his girlfriend were living with relatives

:09:34. > :09:38.in a house with no smoke al`rms a choice which his aunt now rdgrets.

:09:39. > :09:41.Get one, please, especially if you do have young kids, even older kids.

:09:42. > :09:50.You need to know how you're going to get out in a fire.

:09:51. > :09:53.But what saved Michael's chhldren on Wednesday was their neighbour.

:09:54. > :09:58.There's nothing I can do to say thank you enough for what hd did

:09:59. > :10:02.A Kent MP's hit out at the `greement which will allow Southeastern to run

:10:03. > :10:05.trains in Kent and Sussex until 2018 ` calling it a missed opportunity.

:10:06. > :10:08.The train company did have to promise a range of improvemdnts

:10:09. > :10:10.for the deal, including providing extra seats across the network.

:10:11. > :10:13.But Tunbridge Wells MP, Greg Clark, says they've failed to addrdss

:10:14. > :10:20.a significant concern for commuters ` the difference in cost of fares

:10:21. > :10:25.Yesterday we reported the company have pledged improvements, hncluding

:10:26. > :10:28.more services. Two people have been arrestdd after

:10:29. > :10:30.protestors against live anilal exports tried to prevent five

:10:31. > :10:32.lorries carrying sheep from passing Around 100 people were at the port

:10:33. > :10:36.from eight o'clock this morning It's exactly two years sincd more

:10:37. > :10:40.than 40 sheep died at the docks Overflowing bins

:10:41. > :10:42.and rotting rubbish lined the streets of Brighton and Hove

:10:43. > :10:46.for much of the summer last year, when the city's refuse colldctors

:10:47. > :10:49.went on strike over pay cuts. Today the prospect

:10:50. > :10:52.of similar scenes this wintdr came a step closer as workers began

:10:53. > :10:56.fresh industrial action. The GMB union claims staff `re

:10:57. > :11:00.handling an uneven workload, with some collecting up to 40% more

:11:01. > :11:04.waste than their colleagues. There are claims some drivers are

:11:05. > :11:08.being harassed or unfairly removed from rounds,

:11:09. > :11:11.and the Union says drivers should be on a higher grade ` in line with

:11:12. > :11:29.the level it say council workers Members who are taking action are

:11:30. > :11:34.also inhabitants of this city. They know it is an inconvenience. It is

:11:35. > :11:40.not something they do lightly. They do it... Because of the inaction of

:11:41. > :11:42.the local authority. Last summer's week`long strhke

:11:43. > :11:44.was resolved when new working But talks resumed in April, when the

:11:45. > :11:48.GMB Union claimed practices being introduced as part of that `greement

:11:49. > :11:50.had not bedded in properly. Earlier this week,

:11:51. > :11:52.the Union announced bin workers would take industrial action again `

:11:53. > :11:57.as well as the overtime ban starting today, they're also planning

:11:58. > :12:11.a full strike day on Monday. A lot of drivers in our indtstries

:12:12. > :12:18.don't go on strike. The bus drivers don't. It doesn't make a lot of

:12:19. > :12:25.sense. Get out if you don't want it. There will be lot of rubbish in the

:12:26. > :12:34.streets. From the way I see it, all the fat cats always seem to get the

:12:35. > :12:35.pay rise and the working people don't.

:12:36. > :12:37.Our reporter Jon Hunt is in Hove for us now.

:12:38. > :12:40.Jon, everyone there is worrhed they're going to have a repdat

:12:41. > :12:55.Yes. I think there will be disruption. That is inevitable,

:12:56. > :13:00.unless the strike is called. There have been problems already caused

:13:01. > :13:03.here. The council say they `re disappointed, they have been in

:13:04. > :13:09.talks with the union. They simply cannot need the demands of the

:13:10. > :13:16.drivers because their rules haven't changed to warrant a step up in

:13:17. > :13:17.their graves. They say they have honoured the agreement reached last

:13:18. > :13:18.year as well. Brighton and Hove Council s`ys it'll

:13:19. > :13:21.look to discuss the issues further with the Trade Union

:13:22. > :13:35.after the strike day on Monday. Coming up. This is our top story.

:13:36. > :13:38.When the last few moments, police have confirmed that the young child

:13:39. > :13:44.who was shot in the head yesterday has sadly died of her injurhes. The

:13:45. > :13:52.man who shot is believed to be her father. He has been named tonight as

:13:53. > :13:59.Yasser Alromisse also denied. How the choir performed on board a boat

:14:00. > :14:01.is preparing for a big gig. And Rob tackles the infamous Ditchlhng

:14:02. > :14:09.Beacon. A German performance artist is

:14:10. > :14:12.sailing off the coast of Hastings Nothing unusual

:14:13. > :14:15.in that you might think ` but his boat is made of papdr and he

:14:16. > :14:20.wants you to help him build it. It's the latest offering from

:14:21. > :14:22.Frank Boelter, the Cologne based artist and organisers of

:14:23. > :14:25.the Coastal Currents arts fdstival. And as Ian Palmer discovered

:14:26. > :14:27.in tonight's special report, the idea was born

:14:28. > :14:33.in his kitchen ten years ago. You might know it as the ancient art

:14:34. > :14:38.of paper folding, or origamh, but the artist Frank Boelter has

:14:39. > :14:54.turned it into performance `rt. This weekend

:14:55. > :14:56.the German artist will make a boat, The vessel will be big enough

:14:57. > :15:03.for him to sail in the sea. Origami means to oversize

:15:04. > :15:07.its attributes The moment of how we use thd

:15:08. > :15:17.material, as a throwaway society. The piece is

:15:18. > :15:23.about showing there might bd more. The idea came to him

:15:24. > :15:26.ten years ago in his kitchen. He tore up a milk carton and

:15:27. > :15:30.decided to create something else. A portrait painter,

:15:31. > :15:33.he hasn't picked up a brush since. This exhibition took place hn London

:15:34. > :15:36.four years ago, But life means fragility and risk,

:15:37. > :15:48.and this piece of art reminds us to It is risk and fragility

:15:49. > :15:56.and you have to take care. Festival organisers say

:15:57. > :16:01.people here will love it. They will be familiar with

:16:02. > :16:04.the origami boat. They have probably all made one

:16:05. > :16:07.at some point when there were kids, so that will engage them, I think,

:16:08. > :16:10.and I think they will Interestingly, Frank Boelter has

:16:11. > :16:32.recently started painting again He was as much known

:16:33. > :16:35.for his rich voice and varidd film, stage and TV roles as he was

:16:36. > :16:38.a patron and advocate of Kentish For all his classical roles

:16:39. > :16:41.and theatrical prowess, many will remember Donald Shnden for

:16:42. > :16:45.his TV sitcoms such as Two's Company and Never The Twain, as well as

:16:46. > :16:50.a running spoof in satirical puppet show Spitting Image which poked fun

:16:51. > :17:09.at his precise delivery. Ellie Price Here's what a diverse career that

:17:10. > :17:13.spanned Shakespeare to the cruel Sea `` his was a diverse career. And

:17:14. > :17:30.later TV comedy. Despite that incredible cat`logue of

:17:31. > :17:35.film and TV work, it was on the stage that he found his first true

:17:36. > :17:39.love. It is fitting he gave not just as named by professional support to

:17:40. > :17:47.as most local theatre. And the drama students who use the theatrd, his

:17:48. > :17:57.legacy is a very real. To h`ve Donald Sinden as and inspir`tion is

:17:58. > :18:06.great. Invite come close to achieving what he did, I will be

:18:07. > :18:13.happy. `` if I come. Right from the start he got involved in thd

:18:14. > :18:18.process. He came here and pdrformed himself, drawing audiences hn,

:18:19. > :18:23.making the theatre viable. That community appreciated him. Donald

:18:24. > :18:29.Sinden was awarded an honor`ry degree from the University of Kent

:18:30. > :18:46.in 2011. I thought they werd joking. I thought they were joking.

:18:47. > :18:56.The final curtain will come down on an illustrious career.

:18:57. > :18:58.The longest stage of this year's Tour of Brit`in cycle

:18:59. > :19:01.race comes to Sussex tomorrow and the crowds will be hoping to catch

:19:02. > :19:04.a glimpse of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish as the rhders

:19:05. > :19:08.Stage 7 covers 140 miles passing through Haywards Heath,

:19:09. > :19:10.Eastbourne and Lewes with the winner crossing the lind around

:19:11. > :19:15.And to see what the pros will be taking on, I got on my bhke

:19:16. > :19:19.it's not as easy as they make it look.

:19:20. > :19:21.It is the biggest bike race in the country.

:19:22. > :19:22.120 started out in Liverpool last Sunday.

:19:23. > :19:31.Tomorrow they will reach Sussex along a route meticulously planned

:19:32. > :19:38.On the day I start out one hour before the race,

:19:39. > :19:44.checking that the routing tdam have gone out and put the arrows

:19:45. > :19:48.in the right place, just making sure the route is set up and ready for

:19:49. > :19:55.You drive the route on the day of the race and you get to see none

:19:56. > :20:02.Tomorrow's stage gets under way in Camberley, in Surrey.

:20:03. > :20:06.It comes into Sussex at Handcross and heads east through

:20:07. > :20:12.This is the longest leg of this year's tour

:20:13. > :20:21.and Newick marks the halfwax point, 70 miles in, 70 miles to go.

:20:22. > :20:23.At Oakfield, the riders will climb the hdights

:20:24. > :20:27.of Beachy Head, which will `lso provide one of the most spectacular

:20:28. > :20:37.You were up in Yorkshire whdn the Tour de France was happdning?

:20:38. > :20:41.The atmosphere was electric, people were so excited.

:20:42. > :20:45.There was a real buzz so if we get something like th`t

:20:46. > :20:50.Let's hope it is less breezx on the day.

:20:51. > :20:51.It is quite a windy spot around here.

:20:52. > :20:58.Then it is the last few miles heading west

:20:59. > :21:02.into Brighton, but there is one last nasty surprise en routd.

:21:03. > :21:07.The mile long, viciously stdep climb to Ditchling Beacon.

:21:08. > :21:09.The guys who are doing the tour will get here

:21:10. > :21:15.They should have little under ten miles to do.

:21:16. > :21:25.And you guys ride all the thme, so what should they be expecting?

:21:26. > :21:48.When you get to the top and there is a headwind, man alive.

:21:49. > :21:51.But at least from here it is pretty much downhill

:21:52. > :22:00.And so here is where it will come to an end.

:22:01. > :22:04.After 140 miles riding, some 5.5 hours in the saddld,

:22:05. > :22:08.a sprint finish of Madeira Drive in front of thousands of people

:22:09. > :22:30.Did you actually stop? No, H cycled all the way. I didn't get to cycle

:22:31. > :22:45.anything though, we had to stop and film and edit.

:22:46. > :22:48.Their day job involves negotiating the busiest shipping lane

:22:49. > :22:50.in the world but cross channel ferry workers will be looking

:22:51. > :22:53.for something to calm the ndrves this weekend when they'll bd singing

:22:54. > :22:57.The P O Ferries troupe won the TV reality show The Choir:

:22:58. > :23:00.Sing While You Work and this weekend will be performing

:23:01. > :23:03.in front of 40,000 people at the BBC's Proms in the Park in London.

:23:04. > :23:17.Last`minute rehearsals in the office canteen in Dover.

:23:18. > :23:18.A year ago they'd never sung together.

:23:19. > :23:20.Now they are preparing for the biggest concert

:23:21. > :23:25.of their lives in front of thousands in London's Hyde Park.

:23:26. > :23:33.40,000 people, live crowd, we've got no right to believe we

:23:34. > :23:38.It feels such a privilege to be able to go and

:23:39. > :23:45.The smaller crowds are more personal and in your face,

:23:46. > :23:58.It was only in December that the voices of the choir won the hearts

:23:59. > :24:06.of millions of TV viewers, being crowned Workplace Choir of the Year.

:24:07. > :24:10.The choir is made up of a combination of port workers,

:24:11. > :24:15.ferry crew and office staff, with little or no previous experhence.

:24:16. > :24:18.They say this past year has been, in their own words, a roller`coaster,

:24:19. > :24:24.But they all know Saturday hs the big on.

:24:25. > :24:27.I think this is a dream to any classical musician,

:24:28. > :24:34.to be part of such an established and well considered event, `nd

:24:35. > :24:47.Proms in the Park will be lhve on BBC Radio 2 tomorrow.

:24:48. > :24:51.Expect some classics and sole surprises in a performance which, it
