:00:07. > :00:11.Residents from five households in Tenterden have spent the night

:00:12. > :00:16.in temporary accommodation because of a fire.

:00:17. > :00:19.At its height, 35 firefighters tackled the blaze at a three storey

:00:20. > :00:27.Today, this family home is a burnt out empty shell.

:00:28. > :00:29.Last night, a fire broke out as the occupants went

:00:30. > :00:36.I walked across the road to see what was going on, yeah,

:00:37. > :00:39.a lot of firemen getting ready to sort out the fire.

:00:40. > :00:42.What was incredible, they really got on it quickly

:00:43. > :00:48.Eventually, after many hours, they came well equipped

:00:49. > :00:52.and dealt with it very efficiently and professionally.

:00:53. > :00:55.The fire is believed to have started on the ground floor.

:00:56. > :01:01.It wasn't noticed until it was large enough to be seen by passers-by.

:01:02. > :01:08.What made this fire particularly complicated is that six

:01:09. > :01:11.of the houses have a small area of shared roof space that goes along

:01:12. > :01:14.so all the families in the other houses also had to be evacuated.

:01:15. > :01:20.35 firefighters with eight fire engines attended the scene.

:01:21. > :01:23.It is important to remember homes do have an increased fire loading

:01:24. > :01:31.because of Christmas decorations and we are still investigating this

:01:32. > :01:34.incident so it is too early to say what caused it,

:01:35. > :01:36.unfortunately if a fire starts at this time of year,

:01:37. > :01:39.we see rapid-fire development and the extra goods and decorations

:01:40. > :01:44.Fortunately, no one was killed or injured here last night

:01:45. > :01:49.but the three family cats sadly perished.

:01:50. > :02:07.Tonight all of the neighbours that were evacuated back in their own

:02:08. > :02:13.homes and it seems the properties have no lasting damage because of

:02:14. > :02:17.the quick work of the crew. They put holes into the roof of the

:02:18. > :02:23.neighbours house to stop the fire spreading all the way down this

:02:24. > :02:25.block. But the family of the main house have lost everything,

:02:26. > :02:28.including their family pets. A salvage operation to recover

:02:29. > :02:31.the fishing boat which capsized off the Kent coast on Tuesday evening

:02:32. > :02:33.causing at least one of the fisherman onboard to drown

:02:34. > :02:36.is expected to get under way One person was winched to safety

:02:37. > :02:39.from the Belgian-registered vessel after it got into difficulty

:02:40. > :02:42.several mild off Ramsgate yesterday. A second crew member was also

:02:43. > :02:45.rescued but later died - A Kent man is on the verge

:02:46. > :02:53.of becoming the youngest person ever 21-year-old Ryan Holmes

:02:54. > :02:57.from Whistable is due to complete his epic charity

:02:58. > :03:00.challenge on New Year's Eve. On a cold frosty morning,

:03:01. > :03:12.it is marathon number 98 for Ryan. He has covered more than 2,500

:03:13. > :03:15.miles, running an average of two races a week,

:03:16. > :03:21.including doing 12 in 12 days. I've done lots of multi-day events,

:03:22. > :03:27.where you have to get up day after day after day,

:03:28. > :03:30.and it's been cold, rainy, windy, and some days you still have to get

:03:31. > :03:33.up and drag yourself out of bed. But it's been a good

:03:34. > :03:35.journey, it's been fun. I'm just looking forward

:03:36. > :03:38.to the end of it now. It doesn't matter whether he wins -

:03:39. > :03:41.he's on track to become a world record holder,

:03:42. > :03:43.having run 100 marathons And he's raised thousands of pounds

:03:44. > :03:51.for blood cancer research, in honour of his family friend

:03:52. > :03:58.Paul Denton, who is I mean, he's only 48,

:03:59. > :04:04.and the fact that he's so young and he's struggling with that,

:04:05. > :04:06.it's nice to put a bit of awareness out and sort of any

:04:07. > :04:09.little money I could raise Ryan's challenge has

:04:10. > :04:13.taken him around the country, and earned him a horde

:04:14. > :04:15.of finishers' medals. It's an absolutely amazing

:04:16. > :04:17.achievement that he's doing, we are constantly amazed

:04:18. > :04:18.by the lengths that We don't receive any money

:04:19. > :04:22.at all from the government, so we are reliant on supporters

:04:23. > :04:25.and fundraisers, who are always And Ryan's efforts are

:04:26. > :04:28.really quite incredible. He'll run another marathon tomorrow,

:04:29. > :04:34.and on New Year's Eve in Deal, he'll complete his 100th

:04:35. > :04:37.race to earn him a place Turtle doves are often associated

:04:38. > :04:44.with Christmas thanks to the carol. But this iconic British

:04:45. > :04:47.species has been in decline since the mid nineties,

:04:48. > :04:50.in part due to intensive farming methods, and is the UK's

:04:51. > :04:54.most threatened species. Now residents in Kent have

:04:55. > :04:57.bought a plot of land where they hope they can encourage

:04:58. > :05:00.the birds to return. For the last eight years,

:05:01. > :05:11.titled girls have been using this plot of land in Staple near Sandwich

:05:12. > :05:14.so when it came up for sale, local residents clubbed together

:05:15. > :05:16.to buy it for them. We always listen out for them

:05:17. > :05:24.in the early spring. The purring airing

:05:25. > :05:26.the sound of the male birds is a fantastic,

:05:27. > :05:27.evocative The turtle dove has symbolised love

:05:28. > :05:32.and devotion of thousands of years For every 100 birds in the 70s,

:05:33. > :05:37.there are now just nine today. And they are only found

:05:38. > :05:41.in the south-east and east of and. Turtledoves eat the seeds of arable

:05:42. > :05:45.plants or weeds and the problem now is with farmers making more

:05:46. > :05:47.efficient use of their land, there is little land left over

:05:48. > :05:56.where these plants can thrive. Every year, they migrate

:05:57. > :05:58.to sub-Saharan Africa travelling 5000 kilometres each way

:05:59. > :06:02.and when they arrive back in Staple, it is vital

:06:03. > :06:07.they feed well and quickly. They are hungry, they are exhausted,

:06:08. > :06:11.they need to find sufficient food to 30 years ago, they were having

:06:12. > :06:15.three or four broods, nowadays it takes much longer to get

:06:16. > :06:19.in breeding condition. Unless we can reverse the decline,

:06:20. > :06:22.they will be extinct within the next The residents are working hard

:06:23. > :06:27.throughout the winter to make this patch of land in a Kent village seem

:06:28. > :06:47.like home to the Time for the weather. After a misty

:06:48. > :06:53.and for the start, lovely this afternoon, decent spells of sunshine

:06:54. > :06:58.snike, clearer skies and with snike, clearer skies and with

:06:59. > :07:03.lighter winds, quite dense mist and fog patches. They will be slow to

:07:04. > :07:10.clear and the temperatures falling away. -2 or minus three degrees in

:07:11. > :07:15.rural spots. Misty, foggy and frosty Friday and again through the morning

:07:16. > :07:20.the mist and fog is slow to clear and by the afternoon we see more

:07:21. > :07:26.brightness but we still have a westerly airflow so more cloud

:07:27. > :07:32.around on Friday than today. Temperatures five or 6 degrees,

:07:33. > :07:36.feeling cooler and numbers suggest. Saturday, for the most part a cloudy

:07:37. > :07:41.picture, by the afternoon temperatures reaching highs of seven

:07:42. > :07:48.or 8 degrees and if you are heading out for New Year's Eve, it should

:07:49. > :07:55.stay dry, chilly but into New Year's Day we will see rain but good news

:07:56. > :07:58.for partygoers, staying dry. That is all from me. I am back at ten past

:07:59. > :08:19.11. Goodbye. Temperatures have dropped away

:08:20. > :08:24.shortly and we have seen some fog, particularly through the Midlands.

:08:25. > :08:31.We do have some clout drifting in from the west. By the end of the

:08:32. > :08:34.night, towards the East Midlands as well. Further north, more of a

:08:35. > :08:40.breeze from the south-west, bringing in a weather front. Keeping the

:08:41. > :08:44.temperatures at seven or 8 degrees. Freezing or just below to the

:08:45. > :08:49.south-east corner. Fog will live to low cloud and generally speaking a

:08:50. > :08:52.lot more cloud than we saw today. Northern Scotland is the focal point

:08:53. > :08:57.for wet and windy weather. Confined to the north and west of Scotland

:08:58. > :08:59.where temperatures will be quite mild, ten or 11 degrees for Glasgow,

:09:00. > :09:01.Belfast.
