:00:00. > :00:09.Now it's time for the news where you are.

:00:10. > :00:15.Dozens of flights have been cancelled at Gatwick

:00:16. > :00:18.airport due to heavy fog across the South East and Europe.

:00:19. > :00:20.Air traffic control have imposed restrictions causing delays

:00:21. > :00:23.to inward and outbound flights and some cancellations.

:00:24. > :00:25.Well, we can join our reporter Amanda Akass overlooking

:00:26. > :00:38.And, Amanda, what are the conditions like there?

:00:39. > :00:45.It is more a case of what you cannot see behind me. Italy is covered in

:00:46. > :00:50.thick fog and flights began been cancelled earlier this afternoon we

:00:51. > :00:57.understand from easyJet, they are the ground 56 flights. -- the runway

:00:58. > :01:01.is covered in thick fog. Many other flights to Europe have been

:01:02. > :01:07.cancelled as well. We have just heard one fight at was heading from

:01:08. > :01:10.Turkey has had to be diverted to Birmingham. We know from social

:01:11. > :01:14.media there are many people waiting at the airport for their flights and

:01:15. > :01:18.had been told by staff they should go home for the evening and any

:01:19. > :01:21.state and Gatwick Airport told us the restrictions have been brought

:01:22. > :01:26.in by air traffic control and anyone who wants to travel should check

:01:27. > :01:33.with the ailing before setting out. -- in a statement. To we know how

:01:34. > :01:37.long this will go on for? The Met office issued EU weather warning for

:01:38. > :01:43.freezing conditions across the south-east in place until 10am

:01:44. > :01:47.tomorrow morning so this should be expected to carry on well until the

:01:48. > :01:53.middle of the morning tomorrow for people setting off a New Year's you.

:01:54. > :01:55.Gatwick via -- say they're working hard to keep people living and have

:01:56. > :02:01.brought in additional staff at the airport.

:02:02. > :02:06.Within the last hour we've also heard that the Brighton's home game

:02:07. > :02:08.against Cardiff has been postponed due to the fog.

:02:09. > :02:11.But the Gillingham game at Millwall is due to go ahead.

:02:12. > :02:16.Southern Rail is warning of severe disruption

:02:17. > :02:18.on its network once again, as train conductors stage

:02:19. > :02:22.The company says some routes will have no service

:02:23. > :02:24.at all tomorrow, New Year's Day and Monday the 2nd,

:02:25. > :02:27.while the majority of others will have a very limited service.

:02:28. > :02:32.It's the traditional way to see in the new year,

:02:33. > :02:34.but could the London fireworks fall flat for south-east partygoers?

:02:35. > :02:36.Another train strike means services home

:02:37. > :02:42.It is a bit of a disgrace that it has gone on for as long as it has.

:02:43. > :02:44.You would have thought something would have been sorted by now.

:02:45. > :02:47.They have a right to go on strike, even though it will inconvenience

:02:48. > :02:50.other people, but in a way I am kind of with them.

:02:51. > :02:54.It is not great because it is New Year's Eve.

:02:55. > :02:56.I mean, I fully appreciate everything going on with

:02:57. > :03:01.This is Britain's worst train strike in 20 years.

:03:02. > :03:03.It is over Southern's plans to make drivers solely

:03:04. > :03:09.responsible for train safety, using CCTV cameras to monitor doors.

:03:10. > :03:12.The proposals we made were entirely reasonable and we think the union's

:03:13. > :03:15.reaction has been unreasonable and disproportionate and we think

:03:16. > :03:18.strikes are absolutely unnecessary and I call upon the trade unions

:03:19. > :03:22.to consider calling off the strikes, even at this late moment.

:03:23. > :03:25.But the unions say they have the public on their side.

:03:26. > :03:28.We did cancel the strikes on Christmas Eve and the day

:03:29. > :03:35.We have done everything we can to recognise that the public have

:03:36. > :03:38.been wonderful supporting our position on maintaining

:03:39. > :03:43.the safety and critical role of the guard on the train.

:03:44. > :03:46.This strike will start tomorrow for three days,

:03:47. > :03:48.with another planned for January the 9th.

:03:49. > :03:55.Many will be hoping for a New Year's resolution to the ongoing crisis.

:03:56. > :03:58.And just a reminder that BBC South East Today is hosting

:03:59. > :04:00.a special Question Time-style debate about the ongoing crisis

:04:01. > :04:02.on Southern rail services on Sunday the 8th of January.

:04:03. > :04:05.If you live or work in the south-east and want to be

:04:06. > :04:07.in the audience, send an email to bbcraildebate@bbc.co.uk

:04:08. > :04:15.with your details and how you've been affected.

:04:16. > :04:18.Hospital emergency departments in the south-east say

:04:19. > :04:23.they're experiencing extremely high demand with the A department

:04:24. > :04:27.at the Medway Maritime Hospital saying it has more patients coming

:04:28. > :04:31.Patients in East Kent have had to wait up to four

:04:32. > :04:36.In Sussex, hospitals say they are under

:04:37. > :04:39.Our health Correspondent Mark Norman is outside the Medway Maritime

:04:40. > :04:49.in Gillingham - Mark, was this expected?

:04:50. > :04:56.No, this is traditionally a quiet week. It began with the Ambulance

:04:57. > :04:58.Service over Christmas who five found an emergency call and said

:04:59. > :05:05.they were struggling to reach some emergency calls -- 5000 emergency

:05:06. > :05:12.calls. In East Kent there were more than four hour waiting times at both

:05:13. > :05:18.of the major A's. Brighton are seen large numbers of acutely unwell

:05:19. > :05:22.patients and the same situation in Surrey and other places and fewer in

:05:23. > :05:27.Medway, as you say, the worrying situation of more patients coming in

:05:28. > :05:30.at the door than they have beds available. We have been speaking to

:05:31. > :05:31.the matron in charge of A here today.

:05:32. > :05:35.For the past few weeks we have seen a really high numbers of patients

:05:36. > :05:36.attending the emergency department of Medway.

:05:37. > :05:38.We're usually very busy in the run-up to Christmas

:05:39. > :05:41.but we usually see a lull over the few days of Christmas

:05:42. > :05:44.and we just have not seen that this year,

:05:45. > :05:45.so the department has been under constant pressure

:05:46. > :05:56.What is the advice from hospital? The problem is this weekend will be

:05:57. > :06:05.one of the busiest of the year at the advice is, have you called NHS

:06:06. > :06:09.111 and checked for out of hours GP service or minor injuries unit? But

:06:10. > :06:14.if you turn up at A you will be seen and treated but if it is not an

:06:15. > :06:20.emergency you will have wait. Now let's get the weather. That fog

:06:21. > :06:26.has been a real problem today but the difference has been it has not

:06:27. > :06:31.moved so for most of us we have had seemed like this for much of the

:06:32. > :06:35.day. However, one of our weather Watchers got above the fog and we

:06:36. > :06:39.had this beautiful picture. There was some clear skies somewhere

:06:40. > :06:44.across the south-east today but that Met Office warning stays through

:06:45. > :06:48.tonight and into tomorrow so we are expecting some further disruption

:06:49. > :06:52.with poor visibility. You can see hot it thickens through the early

:06:53. > :06:57.hours, combined with temperatures at around freezing we will see freezing

:06:58. > :07:05.fog patches and it will be a chilly start. Much of that mist and fog

:07:06. > :07:08.should lift into low cloud but it will take its time and into the

:07:09. > :07:12.afternoon where we might see some brightness but predominantly cloudy

:07:13. > :07:16.and temperatures around six Celsius throughout the afternoon. Through

:07:17. > :07:21.the evening it stays dry, quite cloudy skies but at least it will be

:07:22. > :07:26.dry as we head towards New Year and those temperatures through the

:07:27. > :07:31.evening will not change a great deal from daytime temperatures soar still

:07:32. > :07:35.we are looking at temperatures of six Celsius. For anyone heading out

:07:36. > :07:38.around midnight. He will change by Sunday because a weather front is

:07:39. > :07:48.moving down and it will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some of

:07:49. > :07:50.which will be heavy in the afternoon. Even in the evening still

:07:51. > :07:53.cloudy and damp with temperatures around seven Celsius. Once that

:07:54. > :07:58.clears, Monday and Tuesday were dry and bright with some sunshine but

:07:59. > :08:01.timing Calder once again. We are back at 10:50pm tonight. Have

:08:02. > :08:13.a good evening. Good night. Good evening, fog has been a problem

:08:14. > :08:14.in recent days, slow
