:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith.

:00:07. > :00:13.Emotional tributes to a father who died after a charity pram race

:00:14. > :00:29.A mother who died after an emergency caesarean at a Kent hospital had

:00:30. > :00:32.asked for an elective section hours earlier, an inquest's told.

:00:33. > :00:35.No plans for talks before the strikes -

:00:36. > :00:47.disappointment for Southern commuters as Aslef drivers

:00:48. > :00:51.due to take six days of action next week.

:00:52. > :00:54.I think it's terrible that we no longer have a nationalised rail

:00:55. > :00:55.industry. hopes but, after two years

:00:56. > :01:00.in charge, Justin Edinburgh has been sacked as manager

:01:01. > :01:06.of Gillingham Football Club. I sit here and dine at a candlelit

:01:07. > :01:13.throne, with cheese and wine and the occasional brown.

:01:14. > :01:18.humour in their dire situation - writing poems about life

:01:19. > :01:21.on the loo to raise money for Crohn's disease research.

:01:22. > :01:27.Tributes have today been paid to a Kent man who died

:01:28. > :01:30.during a charity pram race on New Year's Day.

:01:31. > :01:33.52-year-old Francis O'Sullivan, known as Titch, suffered a head

:01:34. > :01:36.injury after he fell from a pram at the event in Sutton Valence

:01:37. > :01:41.Despite being flown to a London hospital by air

:01:42. > :01:45.ambulance, he died from his injuries early this morning.

:01:46. > :01:48.His sister has described him as a great brother, dad and uncle.

:01:49. > :02:03.Named after the images were filmed, Francisco Sullivan, who was sitting

:02:04. > :02:10.in the pram, toppled out of the car. Known as Titch, he experienced a

:02:11. > :02:18.very bad head injury and died in the morning. Tonight, the organisers pay

:02:19. > :02:22.tribute. The members of the organisation who run the pram race

:02:23. > :02:29.want to offer their condolences to the family at this time. No

:02:30. > :02:33.suspicious circumstances have noted but details have been given to the

:02:34. > :02:36.coroner. It is a very sad event for us. The three-man crew were just

:02:37. > :02:41.that to start their second lap of the race when the crash happened.

:02:42. > :02:45.Writing on Facebook, his sister described him as a beautiful

:02:46. > :02:52.brother, a great dad and uncle. The pram race raises a lot of money to

:02:53. > :02:59.charity and is in its 38th year. They say it is a great organised

:03:00. > :03:08.event. -- There are strong ales for well you can bump into people. For

:03:09. > :03:13.many, it is a shock. The market is a Labour joy and enjoyment. So... It

:03:14. > :03:18.was a short to everyone. Indeed, everyone is in mourning for this

:03:19. > :03:27.Our hearts, our prayers, our minds are with Francis O'Sullivan's

:03:28. > :03:33.family, friends, colleagues. Also with all the organisers here, who we

:03:34. > :03:36.now are absolutely traumatised by what has happened. This quiet

:03:37. > :03:40.village is still coming to terms with what happened. Leaving many

:03:41. > :03:43.asking how such a happy charity event turned into such a tragic one.

:03:44. > :03:48.Chrissie is in Sutton Valence for us now.

:03:49. > :03:55.It's a terribly sad situation. What is technically savvy sage and I?

:03:56. > :04:02.Eyes-mac to them just a short time ago. -- a very sad situation. What

:04:03. > :04:05.did Kent Police say? They say there is no suspicious circumstances and

:04:06. > :04:09.it is now a matter for the coroner. I've been in the village all day,

:04:10. > :04:13.people barking to pay their respects, lay flowers, paying

:04:14. > :04:18.tribute. This is a village in mourning. In a village in shock. For

:04:19. > :04:22.many here, many residents and people living in the surrounding area, this

:04:23. > :04:30.tragedy is still very much thinking thank you. -- sinking in. Thank you.

:04:31. > :04:33.Errors which led to a woman suffering a fatal haemorrhage

:04:34. > :04:35.after giving birth at a Kent hospital, may not have been made

:04:36. > :04:38.if her wish to have an immediate Caesarean section had been followed,

:04:39. > :04:48.Frances Cappuccini died at Tunbridge Wells hospital in 2012.

:04:49. > :04:59.Pleaded with doctors to save her life.

:05:00. > :05:03.If anything happens, just make sure you look

:05:04. > :05:16.She died after losing a huge amount of blood.

:05:17. > :05:24.Mrs Cappuccini has been admitted to hospital, but had died due to a loss

:05:25. > :05:28.of blood after childbirth. Today, the inquest into her death,

:05:29. > :05:36.solicitor husband, seen here in a red tie, told the hearing how during

:05:37. > :05:43.pregnancy, and a difficult experience during her first birth

:05:44. > :05:59.elected the need for a Caesarean. He said: And described her state as...

:06:00. > :06:03.The hearing was told how Mrs Cappuccini's Caesarean was carried

:06:04. > :06:07.out at a 12 hour labour. The coroner had also told how a piece of

:06:08. > :06:15.placenta is left doosras, which led to the haemorrhage. -- was left in

:06:16. > :06:23.her uterus. This could have been stopped, it is heard, if Mrs

:06:24. > :06:27.Cappuccini's please for a Caesarean had been noticed.

:06:28. > :06:31.unless it's a real emergency - how our hospitals are struggling

:06:32. > :06:39.to cope with unprecedented demand this winter.

:06:40. > :06:43.Bosses and union leaders came out of talks today and revealed

:06:44. > :06:46.there are no plans to hold formal meetings ahead of a planned six-day

:06:47. > :06:52.Now Sussex MPs are calling on the Government to step

:06:53. > :06:58.in to prevent the Southern rail network being brought

:06:59. > :07:01.Meanwhile commuters on the Brighton line this morning

:07:02. > :07:03.faced disruption on their first day back at work after

:07:04. > :07:07.Natalie Graham is live at Haywards Heath for us this evening.

:07:08. > :07:12.A new year, but both sides are still in deadlock.

:07:13. > :07:26.No new news. They are. And those talks held today between the Aslef

:07:27. > :07:31.union and Sutherland were very important, it was busier than any

:07:32. > :07:36.point in holding formal talks. -- Southern. As a result, this morning,

:07:37. > :07:39.Southern religious faith yet more disruption on their return to work

:07:40. > :07:46.at the Christmas break. For passengers travelling from Brighton

:07:47. > :07:50.to London, they had on the increase of ?76 on their season tickets. All

:07:51. > :07:55.in all, not a great start for passengers in 2017.

:07:56. > :08:01.For Southern passengers, the New Year has begun as the other one

:08:02. > :08:04.ended. Buses replacing trains and services delayed. The only

:08:05. > :08:08.difference is they now pay more for season tickets. Delayed again today.

:08:09. > :08:16.Neither increase is not reflective of the service they are offering.

:08:17. > :08:21.Added a wage today by 20 minutes. It is disappointing. -- I was delayed.

:08:22. > :08:26.It is frustrating. The garment has agreed a stop to their increases

:08:27. > :08:30.until they sort out what is going on. Sussex and the net before

:08:31. > :08:35.Christmas to discuss the crisis. They are frustrated that the

:08:36. > :08:39.governments have not announced a plan to cut their six-day strike

:08:40. > :08:46.action starting on Monday. -- MPs. That will cripple the network. We

:08:47. > :08:49.literally finding is before the prisoners break and we got plans

:08:50. > :08:53.would be in place if the strike was not resolved. I know details of the

:08:54. > :08:55.plan and I will be bridging ministers and Secretary of State for

:08:56. > :09:00.more information from constituents because, if the strikes will not be

:09:01. > :09:03.resolved and talks fail before Christmas, what is the kind of my

:09:04. > :09:09.constituents get about their daily lives. The New Year began with a

:09:10. > :09:14.strike. A 72 and what have I dare NT union, which ended yesterday. A six

:09:15. > :09:22.day drivers strike is due to start on Monday with members of the art in

:09:23. > :09:27.G and Aslef taking part. -- the RMT. There is also a ban on overtime,

:09:28. > :09:33.causing daily disruption. Many users, particularly in the south

:09:34. > :09:37.east, have suffered a year of substandard service, delays,

:09:38. > :09:39.standing on station platforms in the cold, Alla colour. They are right to

:09:40. > :09:54.feel quite angry. The annual fare increase has added

:09:55. > :09:58.insult to injury by passengers now what a glimmer of hope to start the

:09:59. > :10:06.New Year. A sign 2017 will bring an end to their misery. Well, tonight,

:10:07. > :10:10.there is no sign of any cause for optimism, so now the question is,

:10:11. > :10:14.what can be done to alleviate the misery for passengers next week?

:10:15. > :10:17.Today, we learned that transport companies out of the country are

:10:18. > :10:22.offering to send buses and coaches to help transport southern

:10:23. > :10:26.passengers next week when they are not expecting any trains to run. We

:10:27. > :10:29.do expect more detail in the next few days from the back and perhaps

:10:30. > :10:32.the governments about how they will deal with the disruption coming our

:10:33. > :10:34.way next week. Thank you. BBC South East has discovered

:10:35. > :10:36.websites selling fake degrees for universities in the South East,

:10:37. > :10:38.despite a major crackdown. The Government has shut down more

:10:39. > :10:41.than 40 sites in 18 months. But a number of sites

:10:42. > :10:44.in the Far East are still offering certificates for institutions

:10:45. > :10:46.including the University of Sussex, Brighton University

:10:47. > :10:54.and the University of Kent. Police are appealing for information

:10:55. > :10:56.about the last movements of a man and woman whose bodies were found

:10:57. > :11:00.at the bottom of cliffs in Dover. They are thought to have been

:11:01. > :11:02.twins possibly staying The body of another man

:11:03. > :11:06.was also found at the bottom The family of a young man

:11:07. > :11:23.who died at a new years eve party in St Leonards,

:11:24. > :11:25.after falling four storeys from a flat, have today

:11:26. > :11:27.described him as a "bubbly" person who was "just like any

:11:28. > :11:29.normal young lad". Dan Dawson, who was

:11:30. > :11:31.25-years-old, died after falling through the plastic

:11:32. > :11:33.roof of a kitchen annexe. Five people have been arrested

:11:34. > :11:36.on suspicion of his murder Leanne Rinne joins us

:11:37. > :11:41.live now from the scene. Leanne, have there been any

:11:42. > :11:56.developments in the Well, police are trying to establish

:11:57. > :11:59.Hallen Dan Dawson, who was at a New Year's Eve party at flat number nine

:12:00. > :12:03.managed to get on top of the roof and move across the top of three

:12:04. > :12:08.blocks of flats, all the way down here, all the way down to flat

:12:09. > :12:13.number six, which is where he fell. The man who found it was too

:12:14. > :12:16.traumatised to the Julie on camera today partied detainee through into

:12:17. > :12:21.the utility room and Cheney that shattered roof. He said he found

:12:22. > :12:27.Daniel lying unconscious, he found 999 because he was still breathing.

:12:28. > :12:32.Lisa in carrying out further friendly investigations, saying a

:12:33. > :12:37.modesty to anyone who is in the area in the early hours of New Year's

:12:38. > :12:41.Day. -- Police are. There was an obligation in the flat. Five people

:12:42. > :12:44.have been arrested on suspicion of his murder. They have all been

:12:45. > :12:48.interviews, male, all giving accounts of what they say happened

:12:49. > :12:51.that night but, of course, we need to buy up from as many people as

:12:52. > :12:55.possible if anyone else to what happened, to help us be together the

:12:56. > :13:02.final movements. The family and Boston have been

:13:03. > :13:06.arriving yesterday, laying flowers, as he conceived. They have been very

:13:07. > :13:10.emotional and didn't want to be filled. You can see one of the

:13:11. > :13:14.tributes there. It reads, to uncle Dan, rest in peace, unity and love

:13:15. > :13:15.you. The family say they want to find out exactly what happened

:13:16. > :13:21.there. Thank you all but It's quarter all but to seven,

:13:22. > :13:28.this is our top story tonight: generally getting paid to a kept man

:13:29. > :13:33.who died during a crash during a pram raised for charity on New

:13:34. > :13:41.Year's Day. France's Ed Sullivan suffered an injury is Lenny fell

:13:42. > :13:43.from a pram at the crash. -- Francis O'Sullivan.

:13:44. > :13:45.Also in tonight's programme: How a kent student's toilet humour

:13:46. > :13:47.is helping raise cash for research into Crohn's disease.

:13:48. > :13:53.And it was a very chilly start to the day-to-day with loads of minus

:13:54. > :13:56.six Celsius. Much milder as they go through the night and I love the

:13:57. > :14:02.details for you in the forecast later in the programme.

:14:03. > :14:06.People across the south-east are being warned not to visit

:14:07. > :14:08.accident and emergency departments unless absolutely necessary,

:14:09. > :14:10.as hospitals struggle to cope with winter pressures.

:14:11. > :14:12.The NHS across Medway and North Kent says it's experiencing

:14:13. > :14:13.significant pressure, with unprecedented levels

:14:14. > :14:23.the average waiting time at A has been more than four hours.

:14:24. > :14:30.at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is now

:14:31. > :14:32.on black alert - the highest warning level -

:14:33. > :14:34.meaning the system is under severe pressure.

:14:35. > :14:40.Simon Jones has been speaking to the hospitals

:14:41. > :14:53.Kenny fell over jailing of his Christmas lights late one night and

:14:54. > :14:58.broke his wrist. He went to a and E at the hospital in Ashford. -- Tony.

:14:59. > :15:04.But he had to wait five hours for an x-ray and was in hospital for nine

:15:05. > :15:08.hours. Broken wrist. I had some minor pain relief, some tablets. I

:15:09. > :15:13.have just thinking about an x-ray. I have managed e-mail is trite and

:15:14. > :15:19.asked if I needed it, she said she would be with me in a minute.

:15:20. > :15:28.Complete and utter disaster. -- I approached me nervous. At the

:15:29. > :15:34.Maritime, they are seeing -- the nurse. They are extremely difficulty

:15:35. > :15:39.moving people out of a and E, and a shortage of hospital beds is adding

:15:40. > :15:43.pressure. We are seeing more people than last year, lots of sick

:15:44. > :15:47.patients. This is as busy as we can remember. As you saying to people

:15:48. > :15:52.they should only come here if it is a genuinely a life-threatening

:15:53. > :15:58.emergency? We certainly asked people to alternative arrangements if it

:15:59. > :16:03.isn't life-threatening. We do understand that sometimes it is hard

:16:04. > :16:07.to know that yourself and that situation, leaving, we are here to

:16:08. > :16:10.help you make that decision. The South East Coast Ambulance Service

:16:11. > :16:15.said it is continuing to experience very high level of demand, which is

:16:16. > :16:18.affecting its ability to respond to some calls. The lively Medway

:16:19. > :16:23.Maritime hospital are letting the pressures. It is very busy. I think

:16:24. > :16:28.it is a lot of people, it is really hard on the staff. Tactic but I

:16:29. > :16:34.can't fault the hospital because, if it weren't for them, I could have

:16:35. > :16:39.ended up dead. Hospitals are encouraging patients, if it's not a

:16:40. > :16:44.genuine emergency, to get you minor injury units of walk-in centres. The

:16:45. > :16:47.problem is now one, though, is really sure why it's so much busier

:16:48. > :16:49.now than one year ago. Until that question is answered, the question

:16:50. > :17:00.may be difficult to solve. Crohn's disease can be

:17:01. > :17:02.a debilitating illness, affecting the intestines -

:17:03. > :17:05.and means people who have it often have to spend more time

:17:06. > :17:07.than most in the loo - not something that often gets

:17:08. > :17:10.talked about publicly. But two Cranbrook school friends

:17:11. > :17:15.have no such qualms. Hugo Andrews has

:17:16. > :17:20.published a collection of deadpan verse -

:17:21. > :17:23.or pooems - both looking to find some humour

:17:24. > :17:25.in his chronic condition - and to raise some

:17:26. > :17:26.funds for research. Hugo Andrews was diagnosed with

:17:27. > :17:30.Crohn's disease at ten years old. He used to find it embarrassing

:17:31. > :17:33.to talk about the symptoms of the lifelong condition that

:17:34. > :17:35.affects his bowel until his best I just needed the loo one day

:17:36. > :17:39.in school and so I nipped off and I was thinking,

:17:40. > :17:42."Hugo must do this all the time. And I thought, I wrote him a text

:17:43. > :17:48.showing that I'm thinking about him And it happened to rhyme,

:17:49. > :17:58.sort of, accidentally. That was, as we call it

:17:59. > :18:01.now, it's in the book When you're trying to tell someone

:18:02. > :18:08.what's wrong with you, It's difficult to tell people

:18:09. > :18:17.but I think it shouldn't be. I think it makes it a bit easier,

:18:18. > :18:20.making a joke about it. I sit here and dine at a candlelit

:18:21. > :18:23.throne with cheese and wine The jazz in the background setting

:18:24. > :18:29.the tone, my date in the foreground The school friends are hoping

:18:30. > :18:32.that their humorous rhymes will awareness of the disease that

:18:33. > :18:35.affects more than 100,000 And a percentage of every book sold

:18:36. > :18:44.is going to the Crohn's The cure, sadly, won't becoming

:18:45. > :18:49.in next year or the next few years, so what can we do at colitis UK

:18:50. > :19:03.to better support people Who are having to live, day in,

:19:04. > :19:12.day out, with the conditions? The work that Hugo has done

:19:13. > :19:15.and the money he is raising will help us achieve

:19:16. > :19:17.all of those aims. The fist are copies of the book

:19:18. > :19:20.have already sold out, so the pair plan to print more and,

:19:21. > :19:23.before they had off to university next year, maybe even find

:19:24. > :19:25.inspiration somewhere Onto football now and Gillingham

:19:26. > :19:29.have today sacked their manager Justin Edinburgh after less than two

:19:30. > :19:31.years in charge. The club's suffered back-to-back

:19:32. > :19:33.defeats, losing to Millwall after losing five of their

:19:34. > :19:39.last ten league games and they're just eight points

:19:40. > :19:41.above the relegation zone. Our reporter Piers Hopkirk is

:19:42. > :19:44.outside the Priestfield for us now. So Piers, how have the

:19:45. > :19:51.fans responded today? Well, what is really shocking for

:19:52. > :19:54.the fan is the swiftness of the execution. The players were

:19:55. > :19:59.completely unaware until they came into training this morning, when

:20:00. > :20:05.never told that Justin Edinburgh and his coaching staff has been let go.

:20:06. > :20:09.It brings an end to the Edinburgh rain here at less than two years.

:20:10. > :20:11.As with all managers, they arrived in a blaze

:20:12. > :20:13.of publicity but leave with

:20:14. > :20:16.Justin Edinburgh sacked with the New Year just

:20:17. > :20:21.Performances recently just haven't been up to standard.

:20:22. > :20:23.I think it's not really been a case of

:20:24. > :20:24.hitting the panic button, but supporters

:20:25. > :20:26.can see that some of the

:20:27. > :20:32.players just haven't been performing for this manager.

:20:33. > :20:35.The Gills' FA Cup departure at the hands of Brackley

:20:36. > :20:38.town in November had already heaped the pressure on Justin Edinburgh.

:20:39. > :20:48.Defeat yesterday to Oxford United sealed his fate.

:20:49. > :20:56.In a statement, Chairman Paul Scally said:

:20:57. > :20:58.After yesterday's performance, I'm not shocked

:20:59. > :21:07.I'm still a bit shocked that he has gone because I thought

:21:08. > :21:18.Kenny Jack is someone who has been talked about.

:21:19. > :21:27.We all wanted him to succeed but it just

:21:28. > :21:28.didn't work in the end, unfortunately.

:21:29. > :21:33.It means we're not doing very well if

:21:34. > :21:36.And I liked him, he seemed like a decent man.

:21:37. > :21:45.It was just inevitable that he had to go.

:21:46. > :21:49.So, after 696 days in charge, Justin Edinburgh's tenure

:21:50. > :21:52.All eyes now on who will take his place.

:21:53. > :22:01.Sarah, who will fill his shoes? A deep and the favourite, the former

:22:02. > :22:10.Forest Green manager. He has been linked in the past. -- Adey Penwick.

:22:11. > :22:12.Dennis Wise has also been mentioned. Meanwhile there were wins
