:00:21. > :00:25.Mark Reckless is accused of being a 'Judas' in Rochester.

:00:26. > :00:27.We will be reporting live from the Medway Towns.

:00:28. > :00:30.How thieves burst into a shop in a Surrey market town

:00:31. > :00:32.and brought its owner to the brink of tears.

:00:33. > :00:34.We have got the CCTV coverage and saw exactly

:00:35. > :00:36.what these hooligans have done to our private little business.

:00:37. > :00:39.Also in tonight's programme, the row over the dredging

:00:40. > :00:42.Dover Harbour says it is key to the future of the gateway.

:00:43. > :00:46.The common clothes moth feasting on its fine furnishings.

:00:47. > :00:48.And she was described as unorthodox and infectiou.

:00:49. > :01:05.Now, punk icon Poly Styrene is the focus of a new film.

:01:06. > :01:10.There is outrage in Rochester tonight, after it was confirmed

:01:11. > :01:12.that the town's former MP Mark Reckless, who defected

:01:13. > :01:15.from the Conservatives to Ukip, is to leave that party and vote

:01:16. > :01:19.with the Tories in the Welsh Assembly.

:01:20. > :01:22.Mr Reckless triggered a by-election in Rochester Strood when he left

:01:23. > :01:24.the Conservatives in 2014, provoking anger within the party

:01:25. > :01:31.at his "betrayal" and criticism of the cost of the election process.

:01:32. > :01:33.Tories in Rochester have tonight gone as far

:01:34. > :01:39.One senior politician says he would personally knock on the door

:01:40. > :01:42.of Number 10 in protest, if he is allowed back into the party.

:01:43. > :02:05.The report include some flashing images. Today, I am leaving the

:02:06. > :02:12.Conservative Party. His departure from the Conservative Party to Ukip

:02:13. > :02:21.trigger the by-election. But critics are challenging that if he goes to

:02:22. > :02:26.the election box again, he will never be elected once again. It is

:02:27. > :02:32.the actions of the Judas. I will make very strong representation to

:02:33. > :02:38.the party to deny any consideration to have him back as a member of the

:02:39. > :02:43.Conservative Party. Three years ago, he announced he was leaving the

:02:44. > :02:52.Conservative Party, forcing the by-election. He won the by-election.

:02:53. > :03:02.A cast made weekends in just over ?160,000 to stage the election.

:03:03. > :03:11.Today, Ukip colleagues are asking him to look at his conscience. I

:03:12. > :03:19.think that people should choose. I think he has made a big mistake. But

:03:20. > :03:24.today, Mark Reckless said the proportional representation system

:03:25. > :03:32.in Wales meant he could not trigger a by-election. With the proportional

:03:33. > :03:40.system, that is not possible. Anyone who did vote for Ukip our Noel

:03:41. > :03:46.coming over to the Conservatives at all levels. With sprigs of no one in

:03:47. > :03:54.this way, people say the decision from Mark Reckless is not a big

:03:55. > :04:07.surprise. It is really not so much a party any more, Barack Obama

:04:08. > :04:23.campaign. Mark Reckless Says he will move forward with the Conservatives

:04:24. > :04:42.in Wales. Attention will no to Rochester, free originally defected?

:04:43. > :04:46.People were intrigued by the rise of Ukip. I remember him proclaiming

:04:47. > :04:57.just the other party would win one in ten of the seats at the general

:04:58. > :05:01.election. He was hoping he would be able to stand down and wait another

:05:02. > :05:05.Ukip member take his place. CCTV footage has been released

:05:06. > :05:07.showing the moment robbers smashed their way into

:05:08. > :05:08.an independent shop in Oxted, near Sevenoaks,

:05:09. > :05:10.using a sledgehammer, to help them steal ?30,000

:05:11. > :05:12.of designer clothes. The owners of the store

:05:13. > :05:14.have described them as "hooligans" and say it

:05:15. > :05:16.will be hard to recover from what they call a "sickening"

:05:17. > :05:18.incident early yesterday. Surrey Police are urging

:05:19. > :05:21.anyone who may have seen the getaway vehicle -

:05:22. > :05:23.a white Landrover - to contact them. Dramatic footage shows how

:05:24. > :05:27.the audacious thieves used rope Moments later,

:05:28. > :05:30.they smashed their way Meticulously planned,

:05:31. > :05:33.one stands guard, while the other steals large quantities

:05:34. > :05:34.of designer clothes. Fortunately, we have got the CCTV

:05:35. > :05:37.coverage and saw exactly what these hooligans have done

:05:38. > :05:39.to our private little business. They stole around ?30,000

:05:40. > :05:52.worth of clothes from the Gas Station Jeans store

:05:53. > :05:55.in the early hours of Wednesday. We do not think people

:05:56. > :06:01.have the guts to do that. It is obviously not very nice,

:06:02. > :06:08.because the damage is massive. Most of what was stolen

:06:09. > :06:10.was premium-branded jeans. Locals say this is a quiet

:06:11. > :06:12.and small town and something They obviously do not think

:06:13. > :06:21.about that it is someone's That is way beyond

:06:22. > :06:25.anything I would imagine. The shop owners pay quite a lot

:06:26. > :06:32.in rates and it is quite sad. It will be quite hard

:06:33. > :06:34.to recover from this, because we cannot just go out

:06:35. > :06:37.to our suppliers and say we need more stock, because our suppliers

:06:38. > :06:39.will say, "I'm sorry, we have sold out" and we are left

:06:40. > :06:42.with nothing to sell. Surrey Police told us

:06:43. > :06:44.they are investigating a number he killed himself during a sex

:06:45. > :07:01.abuse trial, but now a school worker from Sussex

:07:02. > :07:12.has his conviction overturned. Jobs and investment in the Port

:07:13. > :07:15.of Dover will be under threat if it is not allowed to dredge

:07:16. > :07:18.material from the Goodwin Sands. That is the claim from the harbour

:07:19. > :07:20.board, after campaigners raised concerns that the work could disturb

:07:21. > :07:23.wildlife and war graves at sea. The Goodwin Sands lie

:07:24. > :07:26.seven and a half miles The Dover Harbour Board wants

:07:27. > :07:29.to take millions of tonnes of gravel from an area called South Calliper,

:07:30. > :07:32.to use as building material But over 12,000 people have signed

:07:33. > :07:55.a petition against the plans. It is a battle over the 12 male

:07:56. > :08:02.sandbank in the English Channel. For some, it is a fatal home for the

:08:03. > :08:12.delay. From us, it provides the Port of Dover with material for

:08:13. > :08:21.much-needed regeneration. The ?250 million project has already begun.

:08:22. > :08:30.Sand dredged from Goodwin Sands would be used in the project. If

:08:31. > :08:37.they had to purchase elsewhere, the easy it would cost millions. Some of

:08:38. > :08:42.the peripheral stuff I have been fighting for for a long time to get

:08:43. > :08:48.here. And we have been waiting for it for since the end of World War

:08:49. > :08:55.II. That could be under threat if we have to spend the money on material.

:08:56. > :09:08.The harbour authorities say they would dredge lesson 1% of Goodwin

:09:09. > :09:12.Sands. But campaigners say Goodwin Sands the horse dozens of shipwrecks

:09:13. > :09:19.and also a lot of their own aircraft from World War II. This EV do not

:09:20. > :09:25.know what would be disturbed. They have not taken due diligence. If the

:09:26. > :09:33.dullness at the start of this, they would not be faced with the

:09:34. > :09:39.situation just know. He would have budgeted for the extra cost of

:09:40. > :09:45.getting aggregate from elsewhere. Marine conservation see the whole of

:09:46. > :09:48.the area should be protected. But the harbour authorities say the

:09:49. > :09:49.development will bring jobs and prosperity.

:09:50. > :09:52.Our reporter Sara Smith is live in Dover now.

:09:53. > :10:01.How many jobs do the developers think the will bring? This either

:10:02. > :10:08.will be 520 new jobs created of fee can go ahead with all the proposals.

:10:09. > :10:12.If they have to spend that extra ?21 million to get material from

:10:13. > :10:20.elsewhere other than Goodwin Sands, the seat it will affect some of the

:10:21. > :10:23.project. Campaigners say this is nonsense. This either as many other

:10:24. > :10:29.places they could get the aggregate cheaply. A report on this will be

:10:30. > :10:31.expected later in the year. The family of a toddler, named

:10:32. > :10:34.locally as Victoria Resetnjova, who was attacked by a dog

:10:35. > :10:37.in Chatham, say that the incident has ruined their lives and the lives

:10:38. > :10:39.of their two children. Her parents have expressed

:10:40. > :10:41.their gratitude to the NHS The three people arrested by police

:10:42. > :10:52.have been released on bail. An inquest into the death of a man

:10:53. > :10:55.from Kent who died while taking part in a charity pram race,

:10:56. > :10:58.has concluded that his death was the result a severe

:10:59. > :11:00.traumatic brain injury. Francis O'Sullivan,

:11:01. > :11:02.who was 52 and known as Titch, fell from the makeshift pram

:11:03. > :11:04.at the event in Sutton Valence He died in hospital

:11:05. > :11:08.the following day. Today, a coroner confirmed his

:11:09. > :11:14.death was accidental. A former boarding school worker

:11:15. > :11:17.from East Sussex who killed himself during a sex abuse trial has

:11:18. > :11:19.had his conviction overturned, after it emerged correct

:11:20. > :11:21.court procedure may not Darren Turk, who was 54

:11:22. > :11:29.and worked at Frewen College in Northiam, was found guilty of ten

:11:30. > :11:32.offences against boys at the Today, judges ruled those

:11:33. > :11:35.convictions should be annulled. Our reporter Amanda Akass is at

:11:36. > :11:41.the court in London for us now. Amanda, why did the judges

:11:42. > :11:59.reach this decision? Darren Turk Took his own life the

:12:00. > :12:05.day before the jury were about to deliver the verdict at a five-week

:12:06. > :12:10.long trail last summer. The guilty verdicts whether then delivered. He

:12:11. > :12:16.was the first dead man ever to be convicted of a claim in England. His

:12:17. > :12:21.family were extremely angry about this. His mother brought the case to

:12:22. > :12:29.the Court of Appeal. Judges decided the verdict should be overturned

:12:30. > :12:35.because legally, if someone dies, the trail should be brought to an

:12:36. > :12:38.end straightaway. But campaigners are concerned that this could be

:12:39. > :12:46.care people from coming forward in future. People were victimised in

:12:47. > :12:51.these years when they should have been enjoying life have really been

:12:52. > :12:55.struggling to pluck up the courage to come forward. The situation today

:12:56. > :12:56.just shows how complicated things can be.

:12:57. > :13:00.Has there been any reaction from those involved in the case?

:13:01. > :13:08.I have spoken to the family of a number of people involved. They are

:13:09. > :13:13.shocked and deeply distressed. They are keen to point out that the case

:13:14. > :13:20.was about the point of law, not necessarily cleaving the name of

:13:21. > :13:27.Darren Turk. But the few we have not been fairly represented today.

:13:28. > :13:30.Mark Reckless, the former UKIP MP for Rochester,

:13:31. > :13:32.who triggered a high profile by-election in the town

:13:33. > :13:34.when he defected from the Conservatives, has been called

:13:35. > :13:36.a "Judas" by former Tory colleagues in the Medway Towns,

:13:37. > :13:39.after announcing he is leaving Ukip, to vote with the Tories

:13:40. > :13:44.unlocking the secrets to how Sussex inspired one

:13:45. > :13:55.A new Constable exhibition opens in Brighton.

:13:56. > :14:01.Plenty of sunshine this afternoon. I will of the weather forecast later

:14:02. > :14:10.on. It was built as a fort in Tudor

:14:11. > :14:13.times to protect Kent against invasion from the French,

:14:14. > :14:16.but now Walmer Castle is facing Tiny invaders almost too small

:14:17. > :14:20.for the eye to see are waging war Moths are feasting on its fine

:14:21. > :14:24.furnishings, with English Heritage reporting a doubling in numbers

:14:25. > :14:26.in the past five years. Lots of types of moth attack

:14:27. > :14:29.fabrics, but the common clothes moth They live indoors,

:14:30. > :14:32.hiding in dark places, The larvae that hatch from the eggs,

:14:33. > :14:45.then spin silk across the material they are eating,

:14:46. > :14:46.causing holes to form. Jane Witherspoon spoke

:14:47. > :15:05.to Walmer's team of experts Commonly thought to wreak havoc in

:15:06. > :15:12.our warm drops, it is no threatening to cause problems with our historic

:15:13. > :15:22.sites. Walmer Castle Believe the number of them has doubled in the

:15:23. > :15:27.past five years. It is devastating. They will eat through anything. That

:15:28. > :15:35.is the potential to be a major issue. I assume this would be your

:15:36. > :15:40.biggest nightmare? You are not wrong. The room we are and no, this

:15:41. > :15:48.was the Duke of Wellington 's bedroom. This was the campaign he

:15:49. > :15:56.took with him on campaigns. They cheer behind is actually the cheer

:15:57. > :16:05.that he died in. They are historic. If the common clothes moth got into

:16:06. > :16:15.them, it would be devastating. A charity spends ?1 million a year

:16:16. > :16:19.cleaning the site. We have found one moth which is relatively new to the

:16:20. > :16:28.United Kingdom. We need to find out if it is something which is coming

:16:29. > :16:38.from abroad. They are leaving traps with the female moth pheromone to

:16:39. > :16:47.try and stop the problem escalating. People can also purchase a kit which

:16:48. > :16:56.will see just how widespread the art in the region. Just how bad is this

:16:57. > :17:02.problem? It could be worse. We have this under control at the moment.

:17:03. > :17:07.They are keeping a check on things. They are inviting people to also

:17:08. > :17:13.give their own information to them. You put it down for three months and

:17:14. > :17:18.then you see with the infestation will be coming from. Hopefully, this

:17:19. > :17:24.information will be helpful. Thank you very much.

:17:25. > :17:26.She famously formed her band after watching the Sex Pistols

:17:27. > :17:30.perform on Hastings Pier on her 18th birthday and now, a new film

:17:31. > :17:31.about Poly Styrene, the former singer with

:17:32. > :17:35.Fundraising has begun today for Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche,

:17:36. > :17:37.with a cinema release date set for November 2018.

:17:38. > :17:40.Poly Styrene was one of the first female punk icons.

:17:41. > :17:41.Her real name was Marianne Elliot-Said.

:17:42. > :17:43.X-Ray Spex released just one album, Germ-Free Adolescents,

:17:44. > :17:48.She died in 2011, at the age of just 53, after suffering from cancer.

:17:49. > :18:17.Piers Hopkirk looks back on her life and the plans for the film.

:18:18. > :18:45.A chose the name because it is a late week disposable products. In

:18:46. > :18:54.the dressing room of the punk rock maker, the 100 Club, the director of

:18:55. > :18:59.the film explains the reasoning. I think she was just as important as

:19:00. > :19:04.any of the important people of the punk era, such as Johnny rotten. She

:19:05. > :19:14.was the first female to make an impact. July the fact. Your 19th

:19:15. > :19:24.birthday. On Hastings Pier, I saw the six pistols for the first time.

:19:25. > :19:31.The story begins in Hastings. This was when she was inspired to form

:19:32. > :19:40.the band. It is being narrated and researched by her daughter. It has

:19:41. > :19:47.been an amazing experience. I had all her artwork and Davies. I am

:19:48. > :19:58.able to discover my mother as she was. It is really special. The offer

:19:59. > :20:07.and musician is one of the raters. She was reading Day-Glo colours and

:20:08. > :20:14.was almost gleeful and childlike. I just admire the bravery of what she

:20:15. > :20:24.did and what she stood for. Her final years were spent at home. She

:20:25. > :20:30.died from cancer. I had a band and we went out there and made a lot of

:20:31. > :20:37.people dance and sing. Code funding for the film has just begun. It is

:20:38. > :20:40.hoped there will be a Premier in November next year. A tribute to one

:20:41. > :20:45.of punk rock 's most fascinating figures. Hastings Pier are looking

:20:46. > :20:53.very different to when she saw it. Constable and Turner -

:20:54. > :20:56.two names that trip easily off the tongue when you ask people who

:20:57. > :20:58.were the greatest English artists. They lived at the same

:20:59. > :21:01.time, 200 years ago and were even in competition

:21:02. > :21:02.with one another. Turner's connections with Kent

:21:03. > :21:05.and Margate are well established, but an exhibition at Brighton Museum

:21:06. > :21:08.and Art Gallery now unlocks a window on the fascinating story

:21:09. > :21:10.of the years John Constable spent Robin, how did his relationship

:21:11. > :21:32.with the town start? Initially, it was not a love of

:21:33. > :21:38.Sussex. He came because his wife was ill and they were hoping that the CE

:21:39. > :21:46.may kill problem recover from tuberculosis. But he painted many

:21:47. > :21:49.landscapes like this one behind me, as you will find out, which can be

:21:50. > :21:53.seen in this exhibition. This is a jaw-dropping collection

:21:54. > :21:55.by one of the godfathers It is the first time

:21:56. > :21:58.these pictures have been brought together, to tell the story

:21:59. > :22:01.of John Constable time in Sussex. It was a time which was personally

:22:02. > :22:04.tragic, because it ended with the death of his wife Maria,

:22:05. > :22:07.but also at a time when his We have been able to amass a large

:22:08. > :22:18.percentage of the work he completed in Brighton,

:22:19. > :22:23.Brayton so we have everything from huge

:22:24. > :22:24.masterpieces to really detailed little sketches that he painted

:22:25. > :22:27.out in the countryside. There is a real wow factor,

:22:28. > :22:31.coming into this room and seeing all these works by one of the real

:22:32. > :22:34.greats of English art. All these great pictures

:22:35. > :22:40.were painted in Brighton You cannot just say "This

:22:41. > :22:51.is John Constable's house." This is where John Constable lodged

:22:52. > :22:57.with his family in Brighton, in the hope that the sea air may cure Maria

:22:58. > :23:00.of her tuberculosis. It is still occupied by an artist,

:23:01. > :23:02.whose fascination with Constable led him to jointly curate this

:23:03. > :23:04.summer's exhibition. I feel it is like a

:23:05. > :23:07.handshake across time. It is like having someone

:23:08. > :23:10.tap on your shoulder Constable was not a fan

:23:11. > :23:16.of the busy centre of the town. But as the exhibition reveals,

:23:17. > :23:18.he painted what he loved in walks into the

:23:19. > :23:20.surrounding countryside - much of which has now

:23:21. > :23:25.disappeared under development. Constable is always thought to have

:23:26. > :23:28.been a Suffolk painter, or a painter So, when he is in Brighton,

:23:29. > :23:32.this is a completely new aspect of him which has

:23:33. > :23:34.been discovered, really, because no-one knew where

:23:35. > :23:38.he was living or what he was doing. 60 jewels from the legacy

:23:39. > :23:41.of one of the most famous The exhibition is

:23:42. > :24:05.here until October. The exhibition does not open until

:24:06. > :24:10.Saturday. A fascinating exhibition. I was lucky enough to spend one or

:24:11. > :24:22.two I was virtually alone with their paintings. It was absolutely

:24:23. > :24:26.inspiring. Thank you very much. Some beautiful live shots. Is this

:24:27. > :24:36.beautiful weather going to last into the weekend?

:24:37. > :24:45.For the most part, temperatures around 14-15 C. A few places even a

:24:46. > :24:53.couple of degrees better off than that. Over the next couple of days,

:24:54. > :25:02.staying dry. Thing is beginning to get slightly cooler, Monday. By

:25:03. > :25:13.Sunday, we could see temperatures getting up to 22-23 C. Heading

:25:14. > :25:17.through tinny, clear sky could lead to some morning mist. Overnight

:25:18. > :25:26.temperatures just dropping down to 8-9 C. Potentially quite chilly in

:25:27. > :25:35.the countryside, with temperatures may be dropping down to 2-3 C. I the

:25:36. > :25:37.afternoon tomorrow, some cloud, but for many others, very similar to

:25:38. > :25:51.today. I temperatures of 13-14 C. today. I temperatures of 13-14 C.

:25:52. > :26:00.Into Saturday, again, dry, with clear skies. Overnight temperatures

:26:01. > :26:12.similar to tonight, 8-9 C. By the afternoon on Saturday, temperatures

:26:13. > :26:22.again reaching up to 22-23 C. A similar story on Sunday. He slightly
