:00:00. > :00:08.Today's main headlines in the South East:

:00:09. > :00:09.French police fire tear gas to disperse migrants,

:00:10. > :00:13.before the Jungle camp is demolished.

:00:14. > :00:17.The Kent pensioner who says NHS bosses are refusing to fund

:00:18. > :00:22.the weight loss operation that would allow him to walk agahn.

:00:23. > :00:25.And we have another cloudy, chilly, autumnal day for tomorrow

:00:26. > :00:43.French police have fired te`r gas to disperse migrants gatherhng

:00:44. > :00:45.near the port of Calais, as the authorities prepare

:00:46. > :00:48.to dismantle the so-called Jungle camp.

:00:49. > :00:51.There are concerns among ch`rities in France that the thousands

:00:52. > :00:53.of migrants gathered there are making increasingly

:00:54. > :00:55.desperate attempts to smuggle themselves

:00:56. > :01:02.Simon Jones has sent this report from Calais.

:01:03. > :01:06.A group of migrants try to get onto the road leading to thd port.

:01:07. > :01:09.They are met with a strong response from the police

:01:10. > :01:12.as tear gas fills the air, a sign of the tension that hs never

:01:13. > :01:17.far away from the camp which is on borrowed time.

:01:18. > :01:19.Well, the tension here has continued into the evening.

:01:20. > :01:23.The police, by firing the tdar gas, have managed to push the migrants

:01:24. > :01:26.back into the Jungle, but there has been a stand-off

:01:27. > :01:28.with the police maintaining a presence here

:01:29. > :01:33.to try and get onto the road back there.

:01:34. > :01:37.The demolition of the so-called Jungle is now just days awax.

:01:38. > :01:40.Home to up to 10,000 people, it's thought many may make ` last

:01:41. > :01:45.I think it's very unclear, and there growing anxiety

:01:46. > :01:48.in the camp because the demolition is imminent `nd

:01:49. > :01:49.what's going to happen to these children

:01:50. > :01:54.The last days of the Jungle look set to be difficult.

:01:55. > :01:58.Simon Jones, BBC South East Today, Calais.

:01:59. > :02:02.A Kent pensioner says he fe`rs he'll never be able to walk again,

:02:03. > :02:05.because local NHS managers are refusing to fund

:02:06. > :02:08.an operation to remove excess fat from his stomach.

:02:09. > :02:12.Ian Sandford from Herne Bay now weighs 30 stone after an opdration

:02:13. > :02:15.to remove a tumour affected his metabolism,

:02:16. > :02:20.His doctors say he would benefit from surgery.

:02:21. > :02:23.But it's not routinely available on the NHS

:02:24. > :02:28.and local health bosses say he doesn't have an exceptional case.

:02:29. > :02:33.When Ian Sanford caught septicaemia after an operation to removd

:02:34. > :02:38.a tumour 26 years ago, he h`d no idea it would significantly

:02:39. > :02:42.slow down his metabolism, causing him to double in wehght

:02:43. > :02:53.It is so galling to be like this and the people that say,

:02:54. > :02:56.or control the purse strings, refuse to see me.

:02:57. > :03:00.They don't know what I'm like, and they've refused to pay for it.

:03:01. > :03:04.His local clinical commissioning group has decided not to provide

:03:05. > :03:08.funding for an operation to remove the fat from around his stolach

:03:09. > :03:10.because they say there is insufficient evidence

:03:11. > :03:14.about the clinical benefit, but both a consultant in London

:03:15. > :03:19.In a statement, Doctor Hugh Matthews said...

:03:20. > :03:23.Mr Sandford's case is exceptional because of the cause of the problem

:03:24. > :03:28.and because of the disabling effects it has on him and it's cert`inly not

:03:29. > :03:32.When two doctors, the GP and the specialist

:03:33. > :03:35.have said it should go ahead, it is against the ethos,

:03:36. > :03:39.We should be making efficiency savings and Jeremy Hunt,

:03:40. > :03:42.the Secretary of State for Health, is reported this morning in the

:03:43. > :03:46.papers as saying they mustn't take the easy way out and ration care.

:03:47. > :03:50.They've got to look at other ways in fact to save costs.

:03:51. > :03:54.The operation would cost just under ?3000, but Mr Sandford

:03:55. > :03:57.and his wife say this is minimal compared to the loney

:03:58. > :04:00.already being spent to help him live with the disability.

:04:01. > :04:04.If it carries on, I can see Ian either moving down here

:04:05. > :04:06.and having carers are going into a care home

:04:07. > :04:13.Mr Sandford says if he doesn't get the operation

:04:14. > :04:15.soon, he fears he'll be confined to a chair

:04:16. > :04:26.The Labour Party's Brighton and Hove branch, suspended amid clails

:04:27. > :04:31.of bullying and intimidation, is to be split into three.

:04:32. > :04:33.Mark Sandell - who was briefly elected chairman -

:04:34. > :04:36.is one of several people to have been expelled from the partx.

:04:37. > :04:39.The branch was suspended in July after complaints

:04:40. > :04:44.of "alleged abusive behaviotr" at its annual general meeting.

:04:45. > :04:47.The eggs of a mosquito never before been found in the UK,

:04:48. > :04:48.but capable of transmitting deadly dise`ses

:04:49. > :04:54.15 homeowners in the villagd of Stanford near Folkestone have

:04:55. > :04:57.been sent letters telling them that Asian Tiger Mosquito eggs

:04:58. > :05:02.Our reporter Amanda Akass is here in the studio,

:05:03. > :05:13.Well, it's very significant. Public Health England have been setting

:05:14. > :05:18.traps for the Asian Tiger Mosquito for several years now. They've been

:05:19. > :05:22.expecting it to come and now it has. This mosquito originally coles from

:05:23. > :05:26.south-east Asia but it has been slowly spreading across Europe. It

:05:27. > :05:32.can carry some fairly nasty diseases like yellow fever and dengud fever,

:05:33. > :05:36.for example. People are obvhously particularly concerned about the

:05:37. > :05:40.Zika virus. This mosquito c`n carry that virus, but it has never been

:05:41. > :05:44.transmitted by this mosquito before in Europe. It is important to say

:05:45. > :05:47.that the area where the eggs were found has been sprayed. Public

:05:48. > :05:52.Health England says there is no public risk because of this. It may

:05:53. > :05:53.well be an isolated case, btt they are continuing to monitor it

:05:54. > :05:56.carefully. Thank you. Campaigners fighting

:05:57. > :05:58.for the expansion of Gatwick Airport ahead of Heathrow have crithcised

:05:59. > :06:00.the Government for delaying the final decision on where

:06:01. > :06:03.to build a new runway. They include the Mayor of London,

:06:04. > :06:05.Sadiq Khan, who's accused The Davies Commission was sdt up

:06:06. > :06:10.in November 2012 to examine all options for runway

:06:11. > :06:13.expansion in the South East. It's recommendation in July 201

:06:14. > :06:17.was a third runway at Heathrow. Ministers said they'd make

:06:18. > :06:20.a final decision within months. But in December 2015

:06:21. > :06:24.they announced a delay for lore The Government will announcd

:06:25. > :06:28.its preferred option next wdek but a Commons vote won't

:06:29. > :06:36.happen for another year. We now know that a final decision

:06:37. > :06:41.on whether to build more runway capacity at Heathrow

:06:42. > :06:43.or Gatwick is some way off. The Mayor of London says businesses

:06:44. > :06:45.struggling with Brexit Now, more than ever,

:06:46. > :06:52.business and certainty and stability in order to make investment

:06:53. > :06:55.decisions Instead, they're getting

:06:56. > :07:00.dither and delay. Four years after the initial report

:07:01. > :07:03.into airport expansion, there was another postponement in June

:07:04. > :07:09.this year following the Brexit vote while a new Prime

:07:10. > :07:11.Minister was chosen. Now, Theresa May says

:07:12. > :07:13.the Government's preferred option will be announced this month

:07:14. > :07:15.but there will have to be a parliamentary vote

:07:16. > :07:18.before the final decision is taken This month, this Government

:07:19. > :07:24.will take a decision on the appropriate site for expanded

:07:25. > :07:29.airport capacity in the south-east. This is a subject that's

:07:30. > :07:31.been debated, discussed, This Government will

:07:32. > :07:36.take a decision. One Crawley business

:07:37. > :07:38.association views the extended process as good news

:07:39. > :07:41.for those campaigning We can go back to the Government

:07:42. > :07:45.and say why we support the runway at Gatwick and rdally

:07:46. > :07:48.build the case and make surd that the Government and the MPs who are

:07:49. > :07:52.going to ultimately vote on it, understand why this next runway

:07:53. > :07:55.should come to Gatwick. It's believe the Government favours

:07:56. > :07:58.Heathrow over Gatwick, something some senior Conservatives

:07:59. > :08:02.are fiercely opposed to. Well, I'm going to continue

:08:03. > :08:05.to make the case and obviously no decision has bden

:08:06. > :08:07.taken, that's the important point. Crawley Borough Council which

:08:08. > :08:11.opposes a new runway at Gatwick says it was disappointed in what,

:08:12. > :08:13.to all intents and purposes, Briohny Williams joins us lhve

:08:14. > :08:20.from Gatwick Airport. Briohny, what's the reaction

:08:21. > :08:32.there tonight? Well, what I'm hearing from Gatwick

:08:33. > :08:36.this evening is that this is the process that they were expecting. A

:08:37. > :08:41.policy announcement, then a public consultation and then a votd by MPs.

:08:42. > :08:45.But critics, including the shadow transport minister, say that this is

:08:46. > :08:49.just another delay. Crawley Borough Council believe that its residents

:08:50. > :08:52.and local businesses are behng left in limbo and some feel that that is

:08:53. > :08:56.just unacceptable. So even though we are due to get the announcelents by

:08:57. > :09:02.Theresa May as to which is the preferred option for Heathrow or

:09:03. > :09:05.Gatwick Airport expansion, we still don't know a definite date of when

:09:06. > :09:13.the final decision is going to be made. Thank you. Finally, an

:09:14. > :09:18.animated version of the award-winning story Ethel And Ernest

:09:19. > :09:25.will be released next week. Raymond Briggs says it is his most personal

:09:26. > :09:26.work, telling the story of his parents. Brenda Blethyn is voicing

:09:27. > :09:28.his mother. The national weather

:09:29. > :09:31.forecast is coming up, but first, let's get

:09:32. > :09:40.the picture in the South East And tunnel day. But for the most

:09:41. > :09:44.part we stay dry. A good de`l of cloud cover around and again,

:09:45. > :09:50.feeling cold with northerly breezes highs of around 13 or 14 degrees. We

:09:51. > :09:56.started the week with highs of 7 or 18. Scrutinise, initially scattered

:09:57. > :10:02.showers but tonight is a drx night. There will be a bit of mist and fog

:10:03. > :10:08.tomorrow morning and quite ` chilly picture so for the most part, rules

:10:09. > :10:12.of around eight or 9 degrees. A cold start to the day for Thursd`y.

:10:13. > :10:15.Initially mist and fog that that burns back relatively quickly. We

:10:16. > :10:18.have this area of low presstre out of the east of us as you can tell

:10:19. > :10:23.the high pressure out of thd West. That means we will see the wind

:10:24. > :10:25.mostly from a northerly dirdction. Again, further tempering

:10:26. > :10:29.temperatures but there will be a great deal of sunshine around

:10:30. > :10:39.particularly in the morning. By the afternoon, more cloud cover and

:10:40. > :10:42.warranties or two scattered showers you are a similar temperatures to

:10:43. > :10:44.today. I is a 13 or 14 degrdes tempered by those wins. Frol

:10:45. > :10:47.Thursday into Friday, for the most part, a dry and cold night.

:10:48. > :10:51.Temperatures in single figures of nine or 10 degrees. Scatterdd

:10:52. > :10:54.showers but relatively light and a similar story on Friday. Before the

:10:55. > :10:58.east that you are, the more likely you are to reach a shower.

:10:59. > :11:00.Temperatures 14 or 15 is not feeling too bad if you wrap up warm in the

:11:01. > :11:07.best of that brightness. that cool breeze to factor in. Here

:11:08. > :11:11.is Matt with the national outlook. Good evening. Just as the weather

:11:12. > :11:15.starts to quieten down across many parts of the country it notched up a

:11:16. > :11:19.gear across the east coast today. Near gale force winds whipping up

:11:20. > :11:25.rough seas for our weather watchers in north Yorkshire and in Norfolk.

:11:26. > :11:28.Low pressure across the North Sea, still in place tonight bringing

:11:29. > :11:32.gusty winds down the east coast and showers as well. Away from that most

:11:33. > :11:35.will be dry. An isolated shower down to west Cornwall and the Isles of

:11:36. > :11:41.Scilly but it's high pressure in charge in the west. Lighter winds

:11:42. > :11:46.and clearer skies and coldest of the conditions. A night to snuggle down

:11:47. > :11:50.under the duvet. Frost-free to the east of England. The breeze will

:11:51. > :11:53.still be there in the morning. One or two showers on the coast. Most

:11:54. > :11:57.will get away with a dry morning commute. Sunniest weather to the

:11:58. > :11:59.west. Again a touch of frost here. One or two
