:01:01. > :01:02.on trains was discussed. Following our debate programme,

:01:03. > :01:04.aired earlier this evening, there have been discussions

:01:05. > :01:06.between Southern bosses and the RMT union -

:01:07. > :01:09.but no indication yet that either Our political editor

:01:10. > :01:16.Helen Catt reports. Passengers returning home tonight

:01:17. > :01:19.know this evening is the last time they will be able to catch

:01:20. > :01:22.a train for at least 48 hours, as Southern drivers

:01:23. > :01:25.prepare to walk out again. Their union says an offer to join

:01:26. > :01:27.any new talks has not I have not been invited,

:01:28. > :01:32.I'm not sure what the We have had correspondence

:01:33. > :01:36.seeking talks based said that we will not be shackled

:01:37. > :01:49.by any preconditions. At a special BBC South East

:01:50. > :01:51.debate screened earlier, Southern and the conductors' union,

:01:52. > :01:53.the RMT, repeatedly clashed over the key issue in the disputes,

:01:54. > :01:57.whether or not it is safe to run We are not removing a second

:01:58. > :02:00.person from the train. There will be a second

:02:01. > :02:07.safety-trained person There will be a second

:02:08. > :02:24.safety-trained person on more trains than there were at the start

:02:25. > :02:26.of this dispute. Tell the public you will

:02:27. > :02:30.guarantee a safety-critical We will roster a second

:02:31. > :02:42.safety-trained person on as many trains as had

:02:43. > :02:46.them before this debate. After the recording finished,

:02:47. > :02:49.they went into discussion and it was recognised

:02:50. > :02:51.that there is a need Tonight, the RMT told us lines

:02:52. > :02:56.of communication remained open. We are definitely

:02:57. > :03:06.looking for a solution. We think there is a solution

:03:07. > :03:09.that is viable and there are We hope that Southern get together

:03:10. > :03:19.with us when we meet with the same attitude,

:03:20. > :03:21.the can-do attitude to getting a resolution

:03:22. > :03:23.to the dispute that everybody How many more people have to leave

:03:24. > :03:31.their jobs or lose their jobs and have their family life

:03:32. > :03:32.significantly disrupted May I add, these are not

:03:33. > :03:36.down to just strikes, they were bad before

:03:37. > :03:48.the strikes started. In Westminster tonight, more talks

:03:49. > :03:53.between South East MPs and the Transport Secretary.

:03:54. > :03:55.He is under no illusion that the performance of Southern has

:03:56. > :03:59.been not good of the last 18 months and he has said he will tackle that.

:04:00. > :04:01.Once this is resolved, we need to tackle performance

:04:02. > :04:04.But for angry, frustrated passengers facing another week

:04:05. > :04:06.of reduced services, talk without action

:04:07. > :04:13.Well, from tomorrow passengers face more disruption,

:04:14. > :04:17.as the drivers' union Aslef start three days of strikes this week,

:04:18. > :04:19.with three further days planned later this month.

:04:20. > :04:21.Let's join our reporter John Young now, who's

:04:22. > :04:27.to the dispute tomorrow that could see passengers who use

:04:28. > :04:36.Southeastern trains sucked into this dispute?

:04:37. > :04:48.Yes, very bad news if you rely on South-eastern Trains. Your trains

:04:49. > :04:54.might be much more crowded than usual, because Southern and laying

:04:55. > :05:00.on buses to take their passengers via text hill to Hastings. In Arc

:05:01. > :05:04.and Crowborough buses will be taking passengers to Tunbridge Wells. In

:05:05. > :05:12.Oxton there will be buses heading to Southern eats -- Southern Oaks --

:05:13. > :05:16.Sevenoaks. Southern said they want only essential travellers to use the

:05:17. > :05:20.services because they say tomorrow it will be exceptionally busy with

:05:21. > :05:23.the buses and on South-eastern Trains.

:05:24. > :05:26.We can return to our political editor, Helen Catt, now.

:05:27. > :05:28.Helen, has there been any change in the political

:05:29. > :05:34.Not really. The government has been pretty consistently sticking to the

:05:35. > :05:42.line that the unions need to back down, we heard that repeated earlier

:05:43. > :05:46.Worthing and shorten. If anything Worthing and shorten. If anything

:05:47. > :05:51.that has hardened since last week when the regulator Rip -- produced

:05:52. > :06:00.its second report saying that with some changes that Southern needs to

:06:01. > :06:03.put in place driver only services are safe. The Prime Minister is a

:06:04. > :06:08.crow spokesman said that Theresa May still thinks the Southern strikes

:06:09. > :06:13.are still creating unfair disruption the people. -- the Prime Minister's

:06:14. > :06:24.Questions spokesman. If you And if you missed the debate you can

:06:25. > :06:27.see it on the BBC iPlayer - search for Southern Rail Crisis -

:06:28. > :06:30.and you can join the debate on our Facebook page and on Twitter

:06:31. > :06:34.using the hashtag @SouthernStrike, on our Facebook page and on Twitter

:06:35. > :06:36.using the hashtag #SouthernStrike, and our Local Live pages are also

:06:37. > :06:39.covering the story. Brighton health bosses say

:06:40. > :06:41.they are going to stop funding prescriptions of painkillers

:06:42. > :06:44.for some, in a bid to save half The Brighton and Hove Clinical

:06:45. > :06:47.Commissioning Group say they want people to think more before

:06:48. > :06:50.they book a GP appointment - and say that the savings made by not

:06:51. > :06:53.incurring prescription costs for cheaper drugs such

:06:54. > :06:55.as paracetamol will help The historic Leas Lift

:06:56. > :07:00.in Folkestone could close The Health and Safety Executive says

:07:01. > :07:07.the braking system on the Victorian water-powered lift is unsafe,

:07:08. > :07:11.and the operators say improvements costing ?80,000

:07:12. > :07:18.would be too expensive. 70 years ago the Government made

:07:19. > :07:21.the formal decision that 6,000 acres of Sussex farmland should be given

:07:22. > :07:24.over to the creation of a new town, based around the ancient

:07:25. > :07:26.village of Crawley. Today more than 100,000

:07:27. > :07:31.people live there. As Piers Hopkirk reports,

:07:32. > :07:33.the experience of building new towns has shaped our planning system ever

:07:34. > :07:37.since. NEWSREEL: On the Kent and Sussex

:07:38. > :07:40.border, only 30 miles from London, Its population is around 7000

:07:41. > :07:46.and its quaint old high street with its timbered houses is among

:07:47. > :07:50.the most picturesque in Britain. It is 70 years to the day

:07:51. > :07:54.since Crawley was chosen A giant expansion in rural

:07:55. > :07:59.development to ease overcrowding I have much pleasure in opening this

:08:00. > :08:07.road and in naming it Manor Royal. Designed to provide homes for both

:08:08. > :08:09.families and business, Crawley was a place that

:08:10. > :08:11.would arrive on the map The New Town was designed

:08:12. > :08:20.by Anthony Minoprio and today his son returned to see

:08:21. > :08:22.again his father's vision. How proud was your father

:08:23. > :08:25.of what he had created here? If you produce a town with parks

:08:26. > :08:29.and trees and shrubs and nice things to look out,

:08:30. > :08:33.it is going to be a very nice place to live, and my father was always

:08:34. > :08:38.very keen that the towns that he created should be

:08:39. > :08:40.user-friendly and that he would The town's growth has been matched

:08:41. > :08:51.and indeed fuelled by the expansion A report today suggested Gatwick

:08:52. > :08:57.could support an extra The future of Crawley as a great

:08:58. > :09:02.New Town success and Gatwick Around a third of Gatwick's giant

:09:03. > :09:06.workforce comes from Crawley. So what do the New Town's

:09:07. > :09:10.new generation think I think it has attracted a load

:09:11. > :09:16.of different people, we have a great local economy now

:09:17. > :09:19.and I think it is a really attractive place for

:09:20. > :09:21.people to come and live. Recently Crawley has had a lot

:09:22. > :09:24.of investment into the town centre and the surrounding area and it has

:09:25. > :09:29.got a lot better. Seven new garden towns

:09:30. > :09:31.are on the way, including Ebbsfleet in Kent, but it was Crawley

:09:32. > :09:34.that was at the forefront Brighton have drawn Lincoln

:09:35. > :09:44.or Ipswich Town in the fourth The Seagulls' away fixture will be

:09:45. > :09:50.played between the 27th In a moment the national

:09:51. > :09:57.weather forecast but first let's get the picture

:09:58. > :10:07.in the South East by Thursday there is the risk of

:10:08. > :10:12.some snow. It is a week of two halves, we start very mild, breezy,

:10:13. > :10:17.potentially rain at times. By Thursday a slightly drier picture

:10:18. > :10:22.but with the risk of wintry showers. Through tonight there has been some

:10:23. > :10:27.rain, that has cleared. We start the day tomorrow dry and bright and

:10:28. > :10:32.actually quite mild. By the afternoon we will see a bit more

:10:33. > :10:36.cloud cover, potentially a bit of drizzle as well, and relatively

:10:37. > :10:40.mild, potentially highs of nine or ten along the coast. A westerly

:10:41. > :10:46.breeze stays with us through tomorrow night, rain for a time

:10:47. > :10:53.which clears through. Behind it, overnight temperatures six or 7

:10:54. > :10:57.degrees. Mostly dry for Wednesday. As we head through the afternoon the

:10:58. > :10:58.westerly winds go to a northerly direction, Italy colder over into

:10:59. > :11:03.Thursday. precipitation we get will be of a

:11:04. > :11:07.wintry nation and Thursday is one we have to watch out for. The weekend

:11:08. > :11:09.outlook, it stays chilly with a northerly wind and possibly frosty

:11:10. > :11:11.nights. The national weather forecast
