:07:27. > :07:31.Critics say that's a way of bypassing the law but Theresa May
:07:32. > :07:33.wants to allow new grammars in their own right.
:07:34. > :07:36.In an interview with The Guardian, though, Ofsted chief inspector
:07:37. > :07:38.Amanda Spielman says, "For me, it's a distraction
:07:39. > :07:44.I don't see it as something that has much to do with making
:07:45. > :07:46.the most of every school, of Ofsted making the most
:07:47. > :07:49.of its work and contributing to system improvement."
:07:50. > :07:52.Her comments have angered supporters of Theresa May's plans.
:07:53. > :08:00.A new flagship agenda for this government is widely supported,
:08:01. > :08:05.particularly by people in Kent, and civil servants should not step
:08:06. > :08:08.out of line and start talking against the Government's agenda.
:08:09. > :08:15.Now it is time for civil servants to do what they should be doing -
:08:16. > :08:19.supporting the Government and advising the Government
:08:20. > :08:21.in private but not going public with their concerns.
:08:22. > :08:24.But opponents of grammars say Amanda Spielman is quite
:08:25. > :08:29.It is only her first few days as Chief Inspector
:08:30. > :08:31.and she is plainly determined to base her policy judgments
:08:32. > :08:36.In Sevenoaks, set to benefit from new grammar places,
:08:37. > :08:38.there is no shying away from the debate.
:08:39. > :08:43.It is very hard for them at ten to take the test.
:08:44. > :08:45.We should look at other ways of the children
:08:46. > :08:57.I'm a real fan of aspiration and allowing children to be given
:08:58. > :09:00.the best education that we can through the state system.
:09:01. > :09:07.I think there are certain pupils that are at that level,
:09:08. > :09:10.that have got that sort of knowledge already inside them, that should be
:09:11. > :09:16.The Government didn't want to comment today on the criticisms
:09:17. > :09:27.from the new Ofsted chief other than to say expanding and creating
:09:28. > :09:30.new grammar-school places would create more good school places.
