:01:16. > :01:23.These gritters left the depot earlier than planned

:01:24. > :01:26.because of the severity of the weather.

:01:27. > :01:29.With temperatures set to fall as low as -5, they will cover

:01:30. > :01:32.no less than 900 miles in East Sussex tonight alone

:01:33. > :01:40.If mother nature conspires against us with strong

:01:41. > :01:46.wind, which we expect tonight, and significant snowfall, we will

:01:47. > :01:49.prioritise the roads we keep open, but rest assured we are working all

:01:50. > :01:53.night to make sure the roads are safe.

:01:54. > :01:56.Staff at the County Council Highways HQ have monitored the

:01:57. > :01:59.current state of the road using predictive technology to work out

:02:00. > :02:01.where gritters need to be dispatched.

:02:02. > :02:03.We will have cars transporting medical staff around

:02:04. > :02:11.They will try and get to vulnerable people who might live in

:02:15. > :02:17.We will also be on call in case of incidents on the road and maybe

:02:18. > :02:23.We want to keep the main roads in Sussex

:02:24. > :02:27.It is four years since the last major

:02:28. > :02:30.It saw treacherous driving conditions and

:02:31. > :02:38.With icy conditions predicted tomorrow, and yet more snow forecast

:02:39. > :02:50.our roads will face another test of resilience.

:02:51. > :02:59.Peter Whittlesea is in Crowborough, the highest point in the Weald.

:03:00. > :03:07.People were caught out by the volume of snow that fell earlier. That is

:03:08. > :03:13.right. Although it was forecast it was the volume. In 45 minutes over

:03:14. > :03:19.1.5 inches Dell. Meaning this road was turned into an ice rink. -- had

:03:20. > :03:23.fallen. Slipping and sliding all over the road, the vehicles. It was

:03:24. > :03:28.not until the critters came that it started to flow as normal. -- the

:03:29. > :03:31.gritting. It is the same in other parts of Kent. The gritting teams

:03:32. > :03:35.will be out tonight and also tomorrow morning. The wind has

:03:36. > :03:40.picked up but the chill in the air is very cold. The fear is this slush

:03:41. > :03:45.will turn into eyes and create treacherous conditions when people

:03:46. > :03:47.go to work tomorrow morning. Peter, thank you.

:03:48. > :03:50.Rachel will have a full weather report later in the programme

:04:02. > :04:15.Another 24-hour strike on the Southern rail network

:04:16. > :04:18.by the RMT Union has been announced for Monday the 23rd of January.

:04:19. > :04:20.It comes as the government and the opposition once

:04:21. > :04:22.again attacked each other for their position

:04:23. > :04:27.New talks had seemed possible earlier this week but Southern now

:04:28. > :04:31.claims the union hasn't given it any times or dates for talks.

:04:32. > :04:38.The drivers may be back to work today, but a mix of an overtime ban,

:04:39. > :04:40.trains in the wrong places after yesterday's action

:04:41. > :04:42.and a problem with the line means it is still

:04:43. > :04:44.anything but a smooth ride for passengers.

:04:45. > :04:49.The chances of this being solved in Westminster are about

:04:50. > :04:55.In an interview with South East Today Jeremy Corbyn once again

:04:56. > :04:58.accused the government of pulling Southern Rail's strings.

:04:59. > :05:00.It is about train safety and I think an awful

:05:01. > :05:04.lot of passengers would think the same.

:05:05. > :05:07.Why can't Southern Rail get round the table and negotiate this

:05:08. > :05:08.with the unions rather than the government

:05:09. > :05:09.pulling the strings and

:05:10. > :05:15.heading to court at every opportunity?

:05:16. > :05:18.In the Commons today in transport questions, this from the

:05:19. > :05:21.Today we have not heard one word from the other

:05:22. > :05:24.side of the house of regret, of condemnation, of a call

:05:25. > :05:35.A strike about who closes the train doors is becoming

:05:36. > :05:39.When you've got a big public sector union

:05:40. > :05:41.like the rail unions, which are very political

:05:42. > :05:47.if you like with Southern Rail, the biggest rail franchise, with the

:05:48. > :05:52.government behind it, it was bound to be political.

:05:53. > :05:55.It always has been but now that politicisation is coming to

:05:56. > :05:57.the surface and we can see actually this is bigger

:05:58. > :06:00.This is about the future of our railways.

:06:01. > :06:06.We can go out the back now and cut a deal...

:06:07. > :06:08.After Monday's BBC debate the RMT and Southern

:06:09. > :06:14.Those hopes were dashed today with the union announcing not a

:06:15. > :06:22.This dispute has been to the High Court and been battered around

:06:23. > :06:25.Parliament and to ACAS, but it's still hard to imagine where the

:06:26. > :06:35.Sara - we heard Jeremy Corbyn say earlier in the week

:06:36. > :06:41.Is that something we're going to see?

:06:42. > :06:47.We asked him directly about that today. While he was happy to list

:06:48. > :06:51.the failings of Southern Rail as he saw it, we could not pin him down on

:06:52. > :06:56.any dates when he would be on the picket lines. I'm not sure either if

:06:57. > :07:03.it is an image his advisers would like to see. It would alienate some

:07:04. > :07:07.passengers and voters as well. But it is that political line, these

:07:08. > :07:10.lines are becoming entrenched. The government is making it clear that

:07:11. > :07:15.it thinks the unions are totally to blame. The Labour leader taking the

:07:16. > :07:19.exact opposite view. They need to find a compromise. Without that

:07:20. > :07:26.there is no way of finding a swift resolution. OK, thank you.

:07:27. > :07:29.The Government has agreed to hold talks over controversial plans

:07:30. > :07:33.If given the go ahead, around 3,500 vehicles will be able

:07:34. > :07:36.to use the site at Stanford West near Folkestone in order to keep

:07:37. > :07:38.traffic flowing on the M20 and surrounding roads

:07:39. > :07:44.The Transport Minister John Hayes has agreed to meet the Conservative

:07:45. > :07:48.MP for Folkestone and Hythe Damian Collins.

:07:49. > :07:51.A school in West Sussex has taken the unusual measure of buying a body

:07:52. > :07:54.worn video camera for its lollipop lady - because of concerns

:07:55. > :07:55.about dangerous driving when children are trying

:07:56. > :08:01.Harlands Primary School in Haywards Heath is only the second

:08:02. > :08:11.Our Education Correspondent Bryony MacKenzie has more.

:08:12. > :08:13.You'll notice something different about this

:08:14. > :08:16.She is wearing a camera recording video and audio.

:08:17. > :08:26.And rarely, but it does happen, driving straight

:08:27. > :08:33.They come into contact with your car?

:08:34. > :08:41.They just skimmed the side of my coat.

:08:42. > :08:49.Dangerous driving outside school gates is not uncommon.

:08:50. > :08:52.Finding inconsiderate drivers has led to angry scenes

:08:53. > :08:54.and an Ashford headteacher warned parents dangerous driving could kill

:08:55. > :08:57.And cars driving on pavement outside of

:08:58. > :09:13.People use it as a rat race was -- rat race.

:09:14. > :09:17.I think it will make things much safer

:09:18. > :09:20.because at the moment people are just driving out of control.

:09:21. > :09:22.It would record footage of drivers and

:09:23. > :09:32.and kept are then handed to Sussex Police.

:09:33. > :09:34.I wholeheartedly believe it will make

:09:35. > :09:40.Two incidents a week were being reported to Sussex Police.

:09:41. > :09:42.It is hoped it will persuade drivers to

:09:43. > :09:57.The National weather in one moment. First, the forecast with Rachel. We

:09:58. > :10:03.have seen widespread snow this evening. 4-5 centimetres widely,

:10:04. > :10:08.moving from the West throughout today. Initially falling as rain and

:10:09. > :10:13.sleet and eventually mostly as snow. Much of this is clearing East. But

:10:14. > :10:19.we still have a bitterly cold north-westerly winds gusting on the

:10:20. > :10:24.south coast at 40-50 mph. Look at these temperatures, going down to

:10:25. > :10:29.minus two or -3 in rural spots. A bitterly cold starts tomorrow. That

:10:30. > :10:33.means problems with ice, especially on the road first thing tomorrow

:10:34. > :10:37.morning. Initially it will be dry but falling onto the frozen ground

:10:38. > :10:41.eventually we will have more sleet and some snow and rain as well.

:10:42. > :10:45.Initially dry but problematic on the road first thing. As we can tell

:10:46. > :10:50.more outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow. That clears up and behind that

:10:51. > :10:55.some bright conditions but it will stay bitterly cold. Look at the

:10:56. > :10:59.temperature, highs of two or three degrees with north-westerly wind and

:11:00. > :11:02.the wind-chill makes it feel like subzero. The outlook in the

:11:03. > :11:03.note. If that's not your sort of thing, Sunday will be cloudier and
