:00:00. > :00:07.Today's main headlines in the South East...

:00:08. > :00:09.Jail for the Bulgarian trafficking gang who smuggled dozens of illegal

:00:10. > :00:14.On the eve of fresh talks, a fresh war of words between the RMT

:00:15. > :00:22.And after a great, called weekend, the sunshine was back again today

:00:23. > :00:40.and it is turning milder this week. Six Bulgarian people-traffickers

:00:41. > :00:44.have been jailed for a total of 35 years for bringing dozens of illegal

:00:45. > :00:46.migrants, including several The gang used vans fitted out

:00:47. > :00:49.with hidden compartments, in what the judge called

:00:50. > :00:51.a "well-organised Look in the side of this van

:00:52. > :00:57.and all appears to be in order, but the doors at the back

:00:58. > :00:59.are actually fake. In this narrow gap

:01:00. > :01:01.between the genuine doors and the pretend ones,

:01:02. > :01:03.migrants had to sit One of the drivers putting garlic

:01:04. > :01:11.bulbs in the floor of his van to try to put sniffer dogs

:01:12. > :01:13.off the scent. It is fair to say this is a highly

:01:14. > :01:16.sophisticated concealment from a well organised organised

:01:17. > :01:18.crime group with capacity However, the nature

:01:19. > :01:22.of the concealment is I think, on these occasions,

:01:23. > :01:27.we are lucky we are not Today, cousins Yordan Donchev

:01:28. > :01:31.and Sashko Georgiev were each given prison sentences of three

:01:32. > :01:35.and a half years. On Friday, Ivan Georgiev

:01:36. > :01:43.was jailed for nine years, Veselin Denikov for seven years,

:01:44. > :01:45.Iliyan Marinov and Georgi Stankov The court heard the smuggling trips

:01:46. > :01:49.were made from Calais and Dunkirk into Dover,

:01:50. > :01:51.and from Hook in Well, this case shows the very

:01:52. > :02:09.extreme lengths that people-traffickers will go

:02:10. > :02:12.to to help people break into the country and that is why

:02:13. > :02:15.it is so important that we work with France to ensure that we tackle

:02:16. > :02:17.the people-traffickers, end their evil trade of modern

:02:18. > :02:21.slavery, and that we make sure that the Calais Jungle does

:02:22. > :02:25.not return this spring. Last year, two men were jailed

:02:26. > :02:28.for smuggling 18 Albanian migrants into the UK when their inflatable

:02:29. > :02:32.boat started sinking. The Home Office insists

:02:33. > :02:36.it is stepping up the battle against the people smugglers,

:02:37. > :02:39.but as we showed last week, many migrants remain in France

:02:40. > :02:42.and are still desperate to get What do we know about the people

:02:43. > :03:01.smuggled into Britain by the gang? Well, 37 in total are mainly from

:03:02. > :03:05.Afghanistan, including several women and children. We have heard from a

:03:06. > :03:08.Home Office 's evening and they have said all are trying to claim asylum

:03:09. > :03:12.in the UK, but it is not yet clear whether any of those claims have

:03:13. > :03:17.been successful. In relation to the two men sentenced today, they were

:03:18. > :03:22.told they received 3000 euros for driving the van but we know that the

:03:23. > :03:25.illegal immigrants will pay a lot more to people smugglers to get

:03:26. > :03:29.across the channel, so these men were quite low down the chain, yet,

:03:30. > :03:31.the judge says nevertheless these men have played an important role.

:03:32. > :03:37.Thank you for that. A police helicopter has been

:03:38. > :03:40.searching tonight for a 55-year-old man who's gone missing

:03:41. > :03:42.from his home near Tonbridge. Charles Young left Brenchley at six

:03:43. > :03:44.o'clock this morning. He was due back by 10am

:03:45. > :03:47.but hasn't been seen since. His car has been found nearby

:03:48. > :03:49.and police say they're increasingly Campaigners calling for lifeguards

:03:50. > :03:53.at Camber Sands during the summer season are a step closer to victory

:03:54. > :03:56.after Rother District Council's cabinet approved funding

:03:57. > :03:58.of ?51,000 for the service. Seven men drowned off

:03:59. > :04:00.the East Sussex beach last summer, The funding proposal

:04:01. > :04:04.will be put to the full Brighton and Hove Albion footballer

:04:05. > :04:13.Rohan Ince attacked a nightclub bouncer with a bottle,

:04:14. > :04:15.leaving him with a head injury requiring seven

:04:16. > :04:17.staples, a court has heard. The 24-year-old denies wounding

:04:18. > :04:19.with intent outside the nightclub in Windsor in the early hours

:04:20. > :04:22.of Christmas Day in 2015 Southern rail and the RMT union

:04:23. > :04:31.are set to hold fresh talks aimed at resolving the dispute over

:04:32. > :04:34.driver-only operation which has been Today the union claimed that 1,000

:04:35. > :04:40.services a year are already running without a second crew member

:04:41. > :04:43.on board, which they claim puts passengers at risk in the event

:04:44. > :04:46.of a crime or an accident. Officials are defiant ahead

:04:47. > :04:50.of tomorrow's talks. What we're trying to do is go

:04:51. > :04:53.there tomorrow in good faith and ensure that there's a second

:04:54. > :04:55.safety-critical person If that doesn't happen,

:04:56. > :04:59.I'm afraid we're back in dispute. Southern managers deny passenger

:05:00. > :05:01.safety is being put at risk. Our reporter John Young

:05:02. > :05:04.is at Haywards Heath Station now... Southern did broker a deal

:05:05. > :05:05.with Aslef recently, how likely is a breakthrough

:05:06. > :05:21.with the RMT tomorrow? It looks as if it could possibly be,

:05:22. > :05:25.rock, for two reasons. Firstly, Dieke announcement on Thursday from

:05:26. > :05:30.Aslef, the other unions involved, more on that shortly. Firstly, the

:05:31. > :05:36.talks tomorrow involving RMT. Nobody I think it is a busy expect a big

:05:37. > :05:42.breakthrough, we heard the call they are from Mr Hedley, very defined.

:05:43. > :05:45.Passengers that I spoke to when I told them the union was meeting for

:05:46. > :05:45.the seventh set of talks, none expected much either.

:05:46. > :05:47.I don't think anything is going to be sorted.

:05:48. > :05:50.Nothing has been sorted so far, so what is to say anything

:05:51. > :05:56.I can't miss my train because I've got lessons.

:05:57. > :06:05.I think it may well do in the end but it will need

:06:06. > :06:15.So, all eyes and then on Thursday. Aslef the other drivers union will

:06:16. > :06:22.announce whether or not they have reached an agreement and other

:06:23. > :06:26.members have voted to approve an agreement with Southern rail. If

:06:27. > :06:32.they have, Southern rail will think they are on to victory. The RMT will

:06:33. > :06:36.hold them below the water line because the drivers in this dispute

:06:37. > :06:41.are so important. In the past, over 100 years, I understand, only twice

:06:42. > :06:43.have Aslef members actually disagreed with their leadership,

:06:44. > :06:47.that is good news for Southern rail but my understanding is that on

:06:48. > :06:53.Thursday meeting is good because, it is expected to be a very tight

:06:54. > :06:54.ballot result coming up. So the dispute is clearly not over yet.

:06:55. > :06:59.Thank you. Biggin Hill has been celebrating 100

:07:00. > :07:02.years of involvement in aviation today with a very special fly-past,

:07:03. > :07:04.involving a 100-year-old The 13th of February

:07:05. > :07:07.1917 saw Biggin selected as the site for an experimental

:07:08. > :07:09.wireless communications station. During the Battle of Britain,

:07:10. > :07:12.it was a key strategic base for Hurricanes and Spitfires,

:07:13. > :07:14.protecting the skies over Kent In 1974 it became a commercial

:07:15. > :07:17.airport for private Biggin Hill's past and its present

:07:18. > :07:34.flying wing to wing. A Learjet for transporting today's

:07:35. > :07:36.wealthy clientele and a Spitfire, for many, the emblem

:07:37. > :07:40.of Britain's World War II victory. And this airport played a crucial

:07:41. > :07:42.role in that victory It was guarding the southern

:07:43. > :07:50.approaches to London and therefore, it was the first to meet

:07:51. > :07:54.the Luftwaffe and, of course, the Luftwaffe came over this place

:07:55. > :08:01.25 times until there was hardly anything left standing,

:08:02. > :08:11.but it was always operational. Among those celebrating

:08:12. > :08:12.the airport's 100th year, And today he got to fly

:08:13. > :08:16.again in a Spitfire, the aircraft he had been learning

:08:17. > :08:19.to fly in 1940, before an accident The aircraft caught fire

:08:20. > :08:28.and I had to bail out, my parachute did not open properly

:08:29. > :08:31.and I was injured, my right Today's flight alongside a Learjet,

:08:32. > :08:41.a very different scene to that of 1940 when the Battle

:08:42. > :08:47.of Britain raged here. Fighter planes like this one based

:08:48. > :08:50.here at Biggin Hill brought down It was at a heavy price,

:08:51. > :08:57.though, 453 airmen based The role they played has

:08:58. > :09:05.never been forgotten. Neither for Ray has

:09:06. > :09:07.the joy of flying. The RAF has long gone,

:09:08. > :09:17.stopping its last operations The airport's future much

:09:18. > :09:21.more gloss than grit. Sara Smith, BBC South

:09:22. > :09:28.East Today, Biggin Hill. Now let's take a look

:09:29. > :09:30.at the weather for the South East Rachel - it's going to warm

:09:31. > :09:41.up a bit this week? Yes, that is correct. After a cold,

:09:42. > :09:46.cloudy and snowy weekend, all James Nesbitt. We had a bright start but

:09:47. > :09:50.we still have these bitterly cold easterly winds. It is going back in

:09:51. > :09:53.a westerly direction as we speak. Some rain around, particularly for

:09:54. > :09:59.Wednesday, decent spells of sunshine. By Wednesday, highs of 12.

:10:00. > :10:03.Tonight, overnight, because of the winds and despite clear skies,

:10:04. > :10:06.temperatures only dropping to two or three degrees. Again, lots of

:10:07. > :10:12.sunshine during the morning. We lose some of that during the afternoon,

:10:13. > :10:16.more cloud, temperatures creeping up, highs of around 10 degrees. The

:10:17. > :10:24.winds are moving to a South-Easterly direction, still breezy but nothing

:10:25. > :10:27.like the blog North-Easterly winds we had today. Tuesday and Wednesday,

:10:28. > :10:29.very mild. Lots of cloud and potentially some rain at times, just

:10:30. > :10:32.look at these overnight temperatures, seven or 8 degrees and

:10:33. > :10:36.on Saturday, we struggled during the afternoon to reach to days or three

:10:37. > :10:41.degrees. Gary Mabbutt on Wednesday, mostly gyre -- bride during the

:10:42. > :10:45.morning but by the afternoon some light and patchy rain. Temperatures

:10:46. > :10:50.could potentially reach 1112 degrees, wider reaching nine or ten.

:10:51. > :10:53.For Thursday and Friday, this area of high pressure is going to be

:10:54. > :10:58.building in so we should see some spells of whether and a decent

:10:59. > :11:00.sunshine. Temperatures around nine or 10 degrees. Mild overnight.

:11:01. > :11:07.at the weekend it will be mild. Largely dry, perhaps a wind -- windy
