:00:00. > :00:00.In tonight's South East Today: We'll have more reaction from passengers

:00:07. > :00:09.here to the news that the Southern rail strike just became

:00:10. > :00:15.We'll report live from Crowborough Station tonight.

:00:16. > :00:22.The mother killed by cervical cancer, the age for a test is over

:00:23. > :00:30.25, she wasn't offered one because she was 24.

:00:31. > :00:33.After a full day started was a bright afternoon, the fog is back

:00:34. > :00:39.tomorrow. It's been a day of high drama

:00:40. > :00:42.and bitter disappointment for rail passengers,

:00:43. > :00:45.as it became clear that the Southern Rail dispute appears

:00:46. > :00:46.further than ever tonight Just before half past one this

:00:47. > :00:52.afternoon, it was announced that members of the drivers union,

:00:53. > :00:54.Aslef, had astonished their leadership by rejecting a deal

:00:55. > :00:56.that many thought would bring It means that strikes by the RMT

:00:57. > :01:03.union, which have been going on since last April,

:01:04. > :01:06.are now likely to continue. Aslef, the second union involved,

:01:07. > :01:08.joined the industrial action in December, bringing many services

:01:09. > :01:13.to a standstill altogether. Two weeks ago, many passengers hoped

:01:14. > :01:15.Aslef would bow out, after their leadership

:01:16. > :01:19.announced their deal, but today, their membership

:01:20. > :01:20.narrowly rejected that deal. Nafisa Sayani has been

:01:21. > :01:38.following today's developments. After ten months of dispute, 28 days

:01:39. > :01:42.of strikes, 13 days of talks and 14 days of hope that it might be near

:01:43. > :01:49.an end tonight the deadlock is more stark than ever. The reaction from

:01:50. > :01:54.commuters in Brighton. It has been like this for almost one year,

:01:55. > :01:58.really bad strikes in industrial action and it is unbelievable how

:01:59. > :02:01.there is still in dispute and no resolution. And disappointed because

:02:02. > :02:07.I pay a lot of money to travel to brighten every day and I think the

:02:08. > :02:15.service yet it is ridiculous I have to say. I think it is, what is the

:02:16. > :02:21.point of going on strike unless you hold out for a what your true

:02:22. > :02:26.beliefs are and principles? The result was a stunning blow for the

:02:27. > :02:29.leaders of Aslef, whose members nearly always accept the

:02:30. > :02:36.recommendations. But this time although it was close. Version 4.1

:02:37. > :02:41.membership -- 54.1% of the membership through the deal out.

:02:42. > :02:46.Just over 700 members voted, nearly three quarters of the membership. It

:02:47. > :02:50.was a vote of loyalty, for the drivers union to the conductor 's

:02:51. > :02:58.union. Aslef the train drivers obviously share the concerns of our

:02:59. > :03:05.members, the deal on offer did not guarantee a second safety critical

:03:06. > :03:08.person or every trading and it was not acceptable. Neither Southern nor

:03:09. > :03:15.Aslef's leaders were getting interviews, local MPs wear. Unions

:03:16. > :03:19.must understand the full impact they are having on the people they serve,

:03:20. > :03:26.the people I represent. Industrial action is not the way to settle the

:03:27. > :03:31.point at issue. What is at stake is passenger safety and I am persuaded

:03:32. > :03:36.that when you have long 12 carriage trains and have them increasingly

:03:37. > :03:39.going through stations that are not staffed though if there is a

:03:40. > :03:42.accident god forbid that having a second safety critical person on the

:03:43. > :03:47.train helps save lives and that is the bottom line. In a statement

:03:48. > :03:52.Southern Rail said they were hugely disappointed by the news. Conductors

:03:53. > :03:53.have been given hearts, passengers remain caught in the middle.

:03:54. > :03:58.Well this is shaping up to be one of the most damaging industrial

:03:59. > :04:02.It's been estimated that existing problems with Southern Rail,

:04:03. > :04:04.along with the industrial action, has cost the UK economy.

:04:05. > :04:10.That amounts to ?11 million per day of strike action.

:04:11. > :04:12.With estimates that more than three hundred thousand South East

:04:13. > :04:14.commuters have been affected by the on going problems.

:04:15. > :04:25.This was the reaction of one group today that represents passengers.

:04:26. > :04:31.Passengers have the with terrible performance, inconvenience to their

:04:32. > :04:37.lives for months. This look like a resolution had been found buried now

:04:38. > :04:40.look local a quote the year so it is extremely important that all parties

:04:41. > :04:43.get back on the table and ensure that a quick resolution is found.

:04:44. > :04:45.Let's go to Crowborough now for some final thoughts on this

:04:46. > :04:47.from the railway station there, Brihony, angry passengers,

:04:48. > :04:58.angry drivers and conductors, where do we go from here?

:04:59. > :05:02.All interested parties have been issuing statements and once you

:05:03. > :05:06.start reading them you realise that they don't add very much at all,

:05:07. > :05:11.southern see the watch to meet Aslef at get back around the table and

:05:12. > :05:19.agree a way forward and also that they want to understand the issues

:05:20. > :05:23.that led to the outcome. The RMT said that it wants to get back

:05:24. > :05:26.around the table but it's strike is still going ahead next Wednesday.

:05:27. > :05:31.The government which usually stays quite quiet during this ongoing

:05:32. > :05:36.debate says it wants the unions to work with the members an idyllic and

:05:37. > :05:41.back. It seems to be the same phrases and arguments and

:05:42. > :05:44.incomprehension from both sides, and the passengers at the station and

:05:45. > :05:47.many more that have affected it is the same sense of despair.

:05:48. > :05:49.Well you've been reacting to this story on email

:05:50. > :06:03.Alan has been in touch and said the commuters especially in the region

:06:04. > :06:06.should sue the unions to cover the losses, job losses and the damaged

:06:07. > :06:12.home life. Brian says I support the drivers, it

:06:13. > :06:14.does not matter what the second person is called the cutting staff

:06:15. > :06:21.overtime. And the final from France's says how

:06:22. > :06:25.can Chris Grayling the Secretary of State for Transport remain in post

:06:26. > :06:29.when he does nothing. There will be more reaction on BBC

:06:30. > :06:31.Sussex and Surrey radio. A lorry driver has admitted causing

:06:32. > :06:34.the death of a pensioner Barbara Phipps, who was

:06:35. > :06:38.seventy-three, died after being knocked off her bicycle

:06:39. > :06:41.on the A2 London Road William Magee, who's

:06:42. > :06:44.from Chelmsford, has pleaded guilty to causing death

:06:45. > :06:45.by careless driving. He's due to be

:06:46. > :06:50.sentenced next month. This programme has learned that

:06:51. > :06:54.a board level meeting was held two weeks ago

:06:55. > :06:56.at the South East Coast Ambulance Service,

:06:57. > :06:59.at which an action plan to tackle harassment and bullying

:07:00. > :07:00.at the troubled Ambulance The revelation comes

:07:01. > :07:03.after allegations were made of bullying against call centre

:07:04. > :07:06.staff at the South East Coast Ambulance Trust's centre

:07:07. > :07:10.in Coxheath, near Maidstone. The family of a kayaker found dead

:07:11. > :07:13.after going missing at sea say they will be "forever

:07:14. > :07:15.grateful" to the people Dominic Jackson, who

:07:16. > :07:20.grew up in Uckfield, disappeared two weeks ago off

:07:21. > :07:21.the Scottish coast. His family have set up a charity

:07:22. > :07:25.in his name to promote sea safety. They're raising awareness

:07:26. > :07:27.about Personal Locator Beacons, which they believe could have saved

:07:28. > :07:32.Dominic's life. The family of a young mother of four

:07:33. > :07:35.from Gravesend who died of cervical cancer -

:07:36. > :07:37.is calling for the screening Sadie Blackston, who was from

:07:38. > :07:41.Gravesend, had been to her GP several times complaining of pain

:07:42. > :07:48.and bleeding, but her family says she was never offered a smear test,

:07:49. > :07:51.because they are only routinely offered after the age of 25,

:07:52. > :07:53.and she was twenty four. She was only diagnosed

:07:54. > :07:55.after she collapsed. Her family spoke to our

:07:56. > :07:58.reporter, Simon Jones. Just a year after being diagnosed

:07:59. > :08:01.with cancer, Sadie Blackston It has really heartbroken me,

:08:02. > :08:08.I was there for it all I can't even tell you the pain,

:08:09. > :08:22.every day I wake up through the days and when I go to sleep,

:08:23. > :08:25.just, she has taken a massive Currently, women aged

:08:26. > :08:39.between 25 and 64 are offered regular cervical screening,

:08:40. > :08:43.the cancer affects more than 3000 women per year,

:08:44. > :08:45.among them 65 people under 25. Sadie's family believed that had

:08:46. > :08:48.she been offered the test at a younger age the cancer

:08:49. > :08:55.could have been prevented. I think it should be offered,

:08:56. > :08:58.because of the age she was at, it is not just her losing her life

:08:59. > :09:01.it is also her four children because they have no mum now

:09:02. > :09:12.So the age should be lowered from 25 But the UK national screening

:09:13. > :09:16.committee has concluded testing under the age of 25 can do more harm

:09:17. > :09:20.than good, it can cause too many false positive results leading

:09:21. > :09:25.to unnecessary treatment. As a charity we are guided by Best

:09:26. > :09:29.practice, we are guided by research and evidence as the current evidence

:09:30. > :09:31.shows that in countries where screening is offered

:09:32. > :09:36.at younger ages there is not much difference in terms of outcomes

:09:37. > :09:38.of patients saw in the UK we are guided by the evidence

:09:39. > :09:41.and the evidence says that screening But Sadie's family say that

:09:42. > :10:03.in her memory the fight goes on. That's it from your news team here.

:10:04. > :10:07.We had the national weather forecast in the moment but he lives Rachel.

:10:08. > :10:13.It is a mistake for the start of the day and by the afternoon almost

:10:14. > :10:16.clear blue skies. Overnight tonight we have a weakening weather front so

:10:17. > :10:20.it would be wall-to-wall rain but certainly patchy drizzle around for

:10:21. > :10:25.a time. Where we see clear skies with lighter winds there will be

:10:26. > :10:29.some mist and fog, again very mild. Look at the overnight temperatures

:10:30. > :10:34.of seven or 8 degrees. Normally we expect these kind of packages during

:10:35. > :10:37.the afternoon, very mild nurseries that the day tomorrow and a

:10:38. > :10:41.nationally -- initially it will be down. The high pressure will build

:10:42. > :10:46.and be dry with probably a bit more cloud cover around and we had today.

:10:47. > :10:50.By the afternoon temperatures Whiteley will be in double figures,

:10:51. > :10:54.reaching heights of around 11 or 12 degrees, again with light south

:10:55. > :10:58.westerly breezes. Friday entered Saturday stays dry and again very

:10:59. > :11:01.mild, overnight temperatures of five or 6 degrees. Use

:11:02. > :11:08.forthcoming weekend. Here is Nick Miller with a resume of the National

:11:09. > :11:12.weather picture. Hello, rain for some of us today

:11:13. > :11:14.although it won't make much of a dent in the dry winter so far across

:11:15. > :11:15.much of the
