:00:39. > :00:39.trial. And, thieves use a master key tool

:01:09. > :01:10.attacked by a knifeman, who was then shot dead

:01:11. > :01:12.by armed officers. Pedestrians hit by a car

:01:13. > :01:15.on Westminster Bridge are also among Our Political Editor Helen Catt

:01:16. > :01:18.joins us from Westminster. Helen, South East MPs

:01:19. > :01:32.witnessed what happened. Yes, well if you think this was

:01:33. > :01:36.quite a normal Parliamentary day up until 3pm this afternoon, then a

:01:37. > :01:40.number of our Kent and Sussex MPs were among those who ended up in

:01:41. > :01:45.lockdown in the House of Commons chamber. Several spoke about being

:01:46. > :01:48.on their way to do the usual Parliamentary things like voting for

:01:49. > :01:55.example. One was meeting a school party. They were bundled back into

:01:56. > :02:00.the houses of Parliament and locked down for the rest of the afternoon.

:02:01. > :02:03.Others were in the offices and they had to remain there for the

:02:04. > :02:06.afternoon. It was not just MPs ought up in all of this this afternoon.

:02:07. > :02:14.The attacks started on the Westminster Bridge just before 3pm.

:02:15. > :02:16.A van driver was on the bridge at the time and his van remains there

:02:17. > :02:18.this evening. As we pulled onto Westminster

:02:19. > :02:20.Bridge, we saw people laying on the bridge,

:02:21. > :02:22.and then the SWAT team turned up with paramedics, and they asked us

:02:23. > :02:25.to abandon our vehicle How many people did you see

:02:26. > :02:30.lying on the ground? There was a lady on the pavement

:02:31. > :02:33.at the entrance of the bridge, but there must have been

:02:34. > :02:47.about five more people Tonight, Kent Police say they are

:02:48. > :02:52.mounting additional patrols in the light of what has happened in

:02:53. > :02:56.Westminster today. Yes, they are. The Chief Constable of Kent has said

:02:57. > :03:01.there will be additional patrols, both armed and Armand across the

:03:02. > :03:05.county to make sure Kent remains a safe place to live, work and visit,

:03:06. > :03:06.although they say there was nothing to suggest there is a specific

:03:07. > :03:09.threat to Kent. School children from Kent

:03:10. > :03:11.and Sussex were visiting Westminster at the time,

:03:12. > :03:14.including a group of primary school pupils from Herstmonceux,

:03:15. > :03:15.who were kept under Our reporter Amanda Akass joins

:03:16. > :03:18.us from Hestmonceux. Amanda, have the children

:03:19. > :03:31.got home safely now? Yes, they are back here safe and

:03:32. > :03:36.sound tonight in the village. 15 pupils aged between seven and 11 who

:03:37. > :03:40.were on a school trip to the House of Commons to try to understand a

:03:41. > :03:44.bit more about how democracy is meant to work. Mercifully they were

:03:45. > :03:47.at the other end of the Parliamentary estate when the

:03:48. > :03:51.attacks happened, but they were held in lockdown for more than three

:03:52. > :03:56.hours before they were escorted by police to catch their train home. I

:03:57. > :04:02.spoke to one of those pupils when she arrived back home and was

:04:03. > :04:03.reunited with her mother. She told me it was a frightening experience

:04:04. > :04:05.in the lockdown. Scary because we didn't know

:04:06. > :04:07.what was going to happen And then we had to have ambulance

:04:08. > :04:12.people come in to check us all, and then policemen came

:04:13. > :04:14.in to take us out. Where you relieved when

:04:15. > :04:17.they came to get you? You must be very glad to be back

:04:18. > :04:21.home with your mum now. What are you going

:04:22. > :04:36.to do this evening? So, huge relief for parents waiting

:04:37. > :04:37.at the station to finally get their children back home safe and sound.

:04:38. > :04:40.Indeed, thank you. The former boyfriend of Sussex

:04:41. > :04:43.teenager Shana Grice has been found It took jurors just two hours

:04:44. > :04:48.to decide that Michael Lane cut her throat in her bedroom

:04:49. > :04:50.last August. He'd stalked her in the months

:04:51. > :04:53.before her death, and tonight, Sussex Police have apologised

:04:54. > :04:55.for the way they handled The force now faces

:04:56. > :04:59.an investigation, as One day after Shana Grice's murder,

:05:00. > :05:04.and Michael Lane is being A couple of weeks

:05:05. > :05:14.later, another lie. Her bedroom door was open

:05:15. > :05:18.and she was on the floor. Trying to suggest he had

:05:19. > :05:21.found her dead, but the real story was that when he had gone

:05:22. > :05:24.to her flat that morning, Shana Grice was brutally murdered

:05:25. > :05:32.in her own home by Michael Lane. Lane had become obsessed

:05:33. > :05:34.with her and could not accept that she did not

:05:35. > :05:38.want to be with him. In July, the month before

:05:39. > :05:42.Shana Grice was murdered, Michael Lane was reported

:05:43. > :05:44.to the police on three He stole a key to her house and let

:05:45. > :05:49.himself into her bedroom The following day, Shana Grice

:05:50. > :05:56.reported receiving a series Then, three days later,

:05:57. > :06:00.she reported that she was being Jurors heard police treated

:06:01. > :06:07.the incident as low risk. The day after Michael Lane

:06:08. > :06:09.crept into her bedroom, Shana Grice challenged him

:06:10. > :06:13.in a phone conversation On one occasion, Michael Lane

:06:14. > :06:41.was reported to police for assaulting Shana,

:06:42. > :06:43.and she was fined for It is very concerning,

:06:44. > :06:48.but it is not surprising. We hear from people every day

:06:49. > :06:51.on the National Stalking Helpline saying they have reported

:06:52. > :06:53.the stalking to the police, but it does not seem to have been

:06:54. > :06:57.recognised or taken seriously. After Shana Grice's death,

:06:58. > :07:00.Lane went to get his lottery ticket checked and came up

:07:01. > :07:03.with a string of lies You ain't going to believe me,

:07:04. > :07:08.but that's up to you. Nobody did believe him

:07:09. > :07:12.and Shana Grice's family said police should have

:07:13. > :07:15.taken her fears seriously. The Independent Police Complaints

:07:16. > :07:18.Commission has now launched an investigation into how

:07:19. > :07:21.Sussex Police handled this case, and Michael Lane will be

:07:22. > :07:27.sentenced tomorrow. Leanne Rinne's with me

:07:28. > :07:30.here in the studio. Leanne, Sussex Police have

:07:31. > :07:39.apologised to Shana Grice's family. Yes, they have, which is very

:07:40. > :07:44.unusual because the Independent and eight commission has not finished

:07:45. > :07:48.their investigation. But today, the Deputy Chief Constable of Sussex

:07:49. > :07:51.Police said, "When we looked at the circumstances leading to Shana

:07:52. > :07:56.Grice's murder, we felt we may not have done the best we could". Sussex

:07:57. > :07:57.Police have carried out a review into how they handle stalking cases

:07:58. > :08:03.to make changes, but tonight, Shana to make changes, but tonight, Shana

:08:04. > :08:04.Grice's family are clear. They say that if police had done more, she

:08:05. > :08:07.would still be alive today. Police are hunting a criminal gang

:08:08. > :08:10.targeting Ford Transit vans to steal thousands of pounds worth of tools

:08:11. > :08:12.in the South East, using a "master-key" tool that can be

:08:13. > :08:15.bought online for just ?20. Online retailers, including Amazon,

:08:16. > :08:19.are facing criticism for selling the device,

:08:20. > :08:21.which is made in China. Our Special Correspondent Colin

:08:22. > :08:24.Campbell has this exclusive story. Van thieves in action

:08:25. > :08:27.in Kent just a week ago. The gang suspected to be

:08:28. > :08:31.using a master key lock pick device. On Friday night in Tunbridge Wells,

:08:32. > :08:41.it was landscape gardener Nick I've lost my tools,

:08:42. > :08:49.so there are no jobs that I can do without hiring equipment,

:08:50. > :08:52.which will be an expense This Ford Transit was

:08:53. > :09:02.broken into that evening. We are investigating a number

:09:03. > :09:05.of offences in the west of Kent, where we suspect a master key

:09:06. > :09:07.may have been used. Made in China, there

:09:08. > :09:13.are tutorials on YouTube on how We've chosen to blur out

:09:14. > :09:18.the name the product, but it can be bought legally

:09:19. > :09:36.on Amazon and other online We asked a security expert to show

:09:37. > :09:39.van drivers how the device works. If I press it a second time, let's see

:09:40. > :09:43.if the back doors are now unlocked. I'm quite amazed that you can buy

:09:44. > :09:46.something like that. Thousands of pounds worth

:09:47. > :09:53.of stuff in the van, yes. The amount of calls we get per week

:09:54. > :09:59.from Ford owners who have been broken into with no visible damage,

:10:00. > :10:02.it would seem they are using Police are urging van drivers

:10:03. > :10:05.to remove tools and equipment from vehicles, and consider

:10:06. > :10:07.investing in better locks, CCTV and to park in well lit

:10:08. > :10:10.and secure areas and report We'll bring you the national weather

:10:11. > :10:23.forecast in a moment, but first here's the picture

:10:24. > :10:32.in the South East Today was wet and windy, further

:10:33. > :10:36.outbreaks of rain through tonight, so overnight tempered is not as cold

:10:37. > :10:42.as last night, dropping to three or 4 degrees. Thursday starts with some

:10:43. > :10:46.rain it will be breezy for stop and have got easterly winds. By the

:10:47. > :10:50.afternoon there will be some sunshine around. Driest in the

:10:51. > :10:57.middle of the day. As we head to the afternoon, further outbreaks of rain

:10:58. > :10:59.along the coast. Top temperatures, highs of ten or 11 Celsius. Here is

:11:00. > :11:00.the outlook: decent day. Saturday could be a much

:11:01. > :11:12.better day, with some sunshine. It certainly was a pretty wet day

:11:13. > :11:19.across parts of the country, lots of downpours around. This is a picture

:11:20. > :11:22.from Kent, not particularly nice. We still have some rain on the way for

:11:23. > :11:26.tonight. Tomorrow morning, some of that when we'll be lingering, but

:11:27. > :11:33.there is sunshine on the way later tomorrow. This is the rain bearing

:11:34. > :11:37.cloud for today. You can see the front sweeping northwards across the

:11:38. > :11:40.country. Still some heavy rain around the northern areas. To the

:11:41. > :11:46.south of the rain band, it is relatively mild compared to

:11:47. > :11:47.Scotland, where it could be
