:02:22. > :02:29.Not necessarily only in the elderly, but yes, it is very common.

:02:30. > :02:34.And as was rightly explained in court, as soon as a person

:02:35. > :02:38.puts their foot on the accelerator mistaking it for the brake pedal,

:03:13. > :03:15.the man who killed a policeman and four others as Khalid Masood,

:03:16. > :03:32.That is being confirmed he was born in Dartford with another name.

:03:33. > :03:34.The 52-year-old was shot dead by an armed officer yesterday,

:03:35. > :03:36.after driving his car into pedestrians on Westminster

:03:37. > :03:38.Bridge, then stabbing a policeman at the entrance to Parliament.

:03:39. > :03:40.Today Kent Police have been conducting armed patrols

:03:41. > :03:42.in response to the attack, as Lauren Moss reports.

:03:43. > :03:45.The terrorist attack which took place just 55 miles away

:03:46. > :03:47.from here has led to an increase armed police presence

:03:48. > :03:54.As of yesterday, the Chief Constable authorised immediately

:03:55. > :03:55.the additional resources to be deployed.

:03:56. > :04:01.We kept staff on duty, both armed staff and unarmed staff.

:04:02. > :04:04.The patrols will be stepped up in busy areas like the Bluewater

:04:05. > :04:06.shopping centre near Dartford, here at Canterbury Cathedral,

:04:07. > :04:08.and the key international gateway at the port of Dover.

:04:09. > :04:11.In Westminster today, parliament tried to get back to normal.

:04:12. > :04:13.The Prime Minister said that the country will never

:04:14. > :04:19.I'm really pleased that the police are playing such a high

:04:20. > :04:25.There is a few evil people trying to undermine us,

:04:26. > :04:32.but the rest of society will be stronger together in combating them.

:04:33. > :04:34.Police have named the man who carried out yesterday's attack.

:04:35. > :04:37.His name was Khalid Masood, he was 52 and originally from Kent

:04:38. > :04:40.but believed to be leaving most recently in the West Midlands.

:04:41. > :04:43.Details about him are still emerging, but we know he had a range

:04:44. > :04:48.of previous convictions dating back to 1983, and the latest was in 2003

:04:49. > :04:51.where he was found to be in possession of a knife.

:04:52. > :04:54.We are told that at the time of yesterday's attack,

:04:55. > :05:02.he wasn't the focus of any police investigation.

:05:03. > :05:04.Well a series of police searches have taken place

:05:05. > :05:07.across the country today, including the search of at least one

:05:08. > :05:11.Our reporter Amanda Akass is in the city.

:05:12. > :05:26.Well, I'm hair outside the Preston Park hotel on the outskirts of

:05:27. > :05:30.Brighton because I've spoken to a number of members of staff here this

:05:31. > :05:36.evening who say that the police were here earlier today. They believe

:05:37. > :05:40.that Khalid Masood, the suspect, did check into the hotel on Friday and

:05:41. > :05:44.stayed here for a number of nights before the attacks took place. We

:05:45. > :05:50.have asked Sussex Police if they are able to confirm any of this, and

:05:51. > :05:53.they have referred to the Met police who refused to comment. None of that

:05:54. > :06:00.is confirmed at the moment. What we know for sure is that a police raid

:06:01. > :06:04.did take place in Brighton today. It was one of seven taking Place across

:06:05. > :06:09.the country as part of this investigation. Sussex Police have

:06:10. > :06:15.stressed there is no specific threat to the community in Sussex at the

:06:16. > :06:20.moment. We have learned more about the attacker and his links to the

:06:21. > :06:25.Southeast? Yes indeed. We have just heard that he was actually born in

:06:26. > :06:31.Dartford, his birth name was Adrian Elms. And during his life he lived

:06:32. > :06:34.in a variety of places across the Southeast including Crawley and

:06:35. > :06:38.Eastbourne. He also believe he had a conviction for knife crime in 2003,

:06:39. > :06:44.which took place in Eastbourne. Amanda, thank you.

:06:45. > :06:47.There's been a sharp rise in the number of child sex offences

:06:48. > :06:49.recorded by police forces in Kent and Sussex, prompting fresh warnings

:06:50. > :06:53.According to figures from the child safety charity the NSPCC,

:06:54. > :06:55.crimes against children and young people rose in Sussex

:06:56. > :06:59.from 1200 in 2014-15, to almost 1500 a year later,

:07:00. > :07:04.In Kent there was an 18% rise over the same period.

:07:05. > :07:08.Both forces recorded an average of four child sex offences a day.

:07:09. > :07:11.Charlie Rose has been speaking to a 21-year-old woman

:07:12. > :07:20.My dad said it was a punishment for being naughty, and it was a type

:07:21. > :07:24.And that if anyone found out, the police would

:07:25. > :07:29.When I got older and I was like, "I don't really care

:07:30. > :07:32.if they come and take me away", he said that he'd kill my mum

:07:33. > :07:37.She says she didn't tell her mother what had been happening

:07:38. > :07:42.When I was 17, my dad was arrested for something else,

:07:43. > :07:45.and then they came to our door and my mum asked me

:07:46. > :07:49.And I confirmed it, because she was begging

:07:50. > :07:53.And then the next day, the police came and spoke to me.

:07:54. > :07:55.And because of what my dad said about the police,

:07:56. > :08:00.And I thought there were just trying to get me or my dad in trouble.

:08:01. > :08:03.And then the more I kind of trusted them, the more I learned

:08:04. > :08:06.it is actually wrong and it's actually a crime.

:08:07. > :08:08.Charity the NSPCC says the latest figures it is obtained

:08:09. > :08:11.from the police show the number of recorded crimes against children

:08:12. > :08:17.These include rape, sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

:08:18. > :08:20.There are a number of things that we think might be behind this.

:08:21. > :08:24.The first is that there is a good, better confidence of victims to come

:08:25. > :08:26.forward following things like high profile cases in the news.

:08:27. > :08:30.We're also seeing that police are better at recording,

:08:31. > :08:33.reporting and investigating sexual crimes against children.

:08:34. > :08:35.The third thing is also really quite worrying,

:08:36. > :08:41.Because we can't rule out that because of the online world

:08:42. > :08:43.and online grooming, that there isn't more opportunity

:08:44. > :08:46.and access for sexual abuse to happen through the online world.

:08:47. > :08:49.This victim's father was arrested just before her 18th birthday.

:08:50. > :08:53.She says she still blames herself for what happened.

:08:54. > :08:55.I had the chance to speak out when the friend broke

:08:56. > :08:59.At that time come he was doing it to other people.

:09:00. > :09:04.I'm angry at all the people that didn't protect me,

:09:05. > :09:09.Both Kent and Sussex Police say they've invested considerable

:09:10. > :09:13.resources in tackling crimes of this kind.

:09:14. > :09:15.And train all officers and staff in recognising

:09:16. > :09:29.those who are vulnerable to child sexual exploitation.

:09:30. > :09:31.Sussex Police have acknowledged there may have been "systemic

:09:32. > :09:34.failings" in the force after a judge criticised their response

:09:35. > :09:36.in the months before teenager Shana Grice was murdered

:09:37. > :09:39.The 19-year-old had reported Michael Lane's disturbing behaviour

:09:40. > :09:41.more than five times - but instead of taking action

:09:42. > :09:45.against him, the police issued fined her for wasting their time.

:09:46. > :09:48.Sentencing Lane to a minimum of 25 years in jail today,

:09:49. > :09:50.Mr Justice Green said police had "jumped to conclusions"

:09:51. > :09:58.That's it from me, we'll bring you the national weather

:09:59. > :10:01.forecast in a moment, but first Rachel Mackley has

:10:02. > :10:11.The sunshine is on the way as we look towards the weekend. Earlier

:10:12. > :10:15.today a good deal of cloud cover around. It brightens through the day

:10:16. > :10:19.tomorrow, some warm sunshine around. We still have a brisk, chilly

:10:20. > :10:23.easterly wind with clearer skies there will be some chilly pictures

:10:24. > :10:27.on Saturday and Sunday morning. Earlier a good deal of cloud around,

:10:28. > :10:31.but much of that cleared during the afternoon. Clear skies initially,

:10:32. > :10:35.but through the night once again more cloud cover around. Because of

:10:36. > :10:41.the wind, we should stay frost free, but temperatures in the rural spots

:10:42. > :10:47.dropping to three or four. A with high-pressure in control of things,

:10:48. > :10:54.it brightens up in the afternoon on Friday. A brisk easterly wind along

:10:55. > :10:57.the coast, temperatures around eight or nine. Here is the outlook in the

:10:58. > :11:02.south-east and stop part of the weekend. 1415 degrees.

:11:03. > :11:05.Still quite breezy. Here's Thomas with the national picture.
