:00:12. > :00:13.was a father-of-three, born in Dartford,

:00:14. > :00:16.who lived in towns and villages across Kent and Sussex,

:00:17. > :00:20.racking up a string of convictions for violent crime.

:00:21. > :00:24.Born Adrian Russell Elms to a single parent in Dartford,

:00:25. > :00:28.he went to school in Tunbridge Wells as Adrian Ajao and also lived

:00:29. > :00:34.His first conviction came at 18 and there were more over

:00:35. > :00:38.two decades: assault, GBH and possession of

:00:39. > :00:43.He was sent to jail in 2003 for stabbing a man

:00:44. > :00:47.He spent time behind bars at Lewes Prison in East Sussex

:00:48. > :00:53.Our Special Correspondent Colin Campbell has the details

:00:54. > :00:55.of the South East criminal who converted to Islam

:00:56. > :01:00.and brought jihadist terror to the heart of Westminster.

:01:01. > :01:02.He lived in the heart of Sussex but went

:01:03. > :01:04.on to strike at the heart of

:01:05. > :01:11.Those who knew Khalid Masood say he was a deeply troubled and

:01:12. > :01:18.If he took umbrage against someone for looking at him,

:01:19. > :01:32.There was an incident he was involved in at this pub.

:01:33. > :01:38.It was a violent, seemingly unprovoked knife

:01:39. > :01:41.attack by Khalid Masood, known back then as Adrian Elms, which brought

:01:42. > :01:49.He smashed a local businessmen across the face

:01:50. > :01:55.He used a Stanley Knife on someone's face.

:01:56. > :01:59.He was an older man and he did not deserve to be stabbed.

:02:00. > :02:01.Smiling at the camera at school in Tunbridge

:02:02. > :02:06.Wells, this is Khalid Masood aged about 14.

:02:07. > :02:09.He was known to friends at the time as Adrian Ajao.

:02:10. > :02:11.He was a genuinely nice guy and I was upset

:02:12. > :02:18.today to think he would have turned out the way he has.

:02:19. > :02:21.And then what he has done to these poor families.

:02:22. > :02:24.It was so out of character for the guy that I knew

:02:25. > :02:29.Police are looking at every detail of his life.

:02:30. > :02:32.Our investigation focus is on understanding his motivation, his

:02:33. > :02:42.Fred Lawrence told me he believed Khalid

:02:43. > :02:48.Confused about his identity, skin colour, isolated and lonely.

:02:49. > :03:06.From schoolboy to Westminster attacker, his complex

:03:07. > :03:15.life has yet to reveal how he chose such a murderous path.

:03:16. > :03:17.Our Correspondent Mark Norman is in Tunbridge Wells now

:03:18. > :03:20.where Khalid Masood was at school, then known as Adrian Ajao.

:03:21. > :03:31.What more can you tell us about his school days, Mark?

:03:32. > :03:39.He came here as a 12-year-old and everybody- spoken to described him

:03:40. > :03:43.as being a well liked, sporty, academic and even fun. And for those

:03:44. > :03:44.I've spoken to, they are quite shocked at the news.

:03:45. > :03:53.And he went on to commit some shocking acts of violence?

:03:54. > :03:58.That is right. This well liked schoolboy moved to the six and

:03:59. > :04:05.became a violent, aggressive young man. He went to prison after

:04:06. > :04:08.stabbing a man. He said he was socially ostracised and racially

:04:09. > :04:12.abused. They moved to ease border after prison and there was a vicious

:04:13. > :04:16.pub fight followed by the stabbing and another six months in jail. The

:04:17. > :04:17.speculation is that he's where and when he became radicalised. Thank

:04:18. > :04:20.you. Well, it was in Brighton that

:04:21. > :04:23.Khalid Masood spent his final night before travelling to Westminster

:04:24. > :04:25.to enact his terror attack. He booked a room at

:04:26. > :04:27.the Preston Park Hotel, This was the room where

:04:28. > :04:31.the London attacker, Khalid Masood, spent

:04:32. > :04:32.his He checked into the Preston Park

:04:33. > :04:38.hotel at around 1pm Nobody here had any idea

:04:39. > :04:48.what he was setting off to do. It is really shocking at the moment,

:04:49. > :04:54.because obviously, we do not expect a nice person as he seemed to be

:04:55. > :05:00.to be that kind of person. As a hotel, we do what

:05:01. > :05:03.we can to take all the information we can,

:05:04. > :05:06.and the police came yesterday and we were able

:05:07. > :05:07.to provide them with all the

:05:08. > :05:09.information they needed and thank The same car that had

:05:10. > :05:14.been parked overnight in Brighton journeyed to

:05:15. > :05:18.Westminster to do this. One of the last men

:05:19. > :05:26.to see him alive runs a security company from

:05:27. > :05:29.the hotel. He was polite, I noticed

:05:30. > :05:34.that he came across as well spoken. Pleasant smile, a nice man.

:05:35. > :05:44.Police swarmed on the hotel on Wednesday night and continued

:05:45. > :05:48.their searches yesterday. Scary for us all to be so close

:05:49. > :05:53.to a killer, a terrorist, yes. There was a lot of plainclothes

:05:54. > :05:56.police in the dining room having talks and that they made

:05:57. > :06:05.off with a fewer items. Police stripped the room out,

:06:06. > :06:07.taking away many items, including the trouser press,

:06:08. > :06:13.the kettle and even the toilet roll Staff still cannot believe

:06:14. > :06:29.that the day London was He spent another night here, last

:06:30. > :06:34.Friday. Was he carrying out a recce or had he planned to go to London

:06:35. > :06:35.and carry out those attacks sooner? Staff here say they can not believe

:06:36. > :06:38.they came so close to a killer. That's it from me, the national

:06:39. > :06:40.weather forecast in a moment but first let's get the picture

:06:41. > :06:56.in the South East A fine weekend coming. Largely dry

:06:57. > :07:01.with sunshine. But a bit chilly. Temperatures dipping tonight. First

:07:02. > :07:05.thing tomorrow, mild on the coast, but inland, temperatures could be

:07:06. > :07:13.down to 3-4 , particularly in rural spots. Saturday shaping up to be

:07:14. > :07:22.decent. Dry, sunny, quite a cold easterly wind. Milder the further

:07:23. > :07:26.west you go across the region. Try through Saturday night and on

:07:27. > :07:30.through Sunday, too. Sunday a fine day with sunshine. Here is the

:07:31. > :07:32.outlook and now the national forecast.

:07:33. > :07:35.weather outlook for the whole of the UK.

:07:36. > :07:46.Good evening. It is good news on the weather front for most of the UK. We

:07:47. > :07:51.have been forecasting fine weather for a few days. It has certainly

:07:52. > :07:54.arrived. Beautiful picture today. The skies are clearing across the
