:00:00. > :00:09.Today's main headlines in the South East:

:00:10. > :00:16.An emergency landing at Shoreham as a plane comes down in DC. The two

:00:17. > :00:21.people on board swam safely to shore. It happened so quickly. You

:00:22. > :00:24.had to run to it to see if there was that you could do. -- comes down in

:00:25. > :00:28.the sea. We're live at Shoreham

:00:29. > :00:29.with the latest. Life in jail for committing murder

:00:30. > :00:32.over a facebook post - the judge says the killer's actions

:00:33. > :00:39.were senseless and futile. It was the warmest day of the year

:00:40. > :00:47.so far. Top temperatures in the south-east of 22 degrees.

:00:48. > :00:51.Two people have escaped with minor injuries after their light aircraft

:00:52. > :00:54.ditched into the sea off the Sussex coast this afternoon.

:00:55. > :00:57.The plane came down around ten metres from the beach in Shoreham

:00:58. > :01:14.Emerging from the sea early evening. Emergency services had to wait for

:01:15. > :01:18.the tide to go out before they could start to pull the plane to shore.

:01:19. > :01:21.It was surprising, you cannot believe it when you see an

:01:22. > :01:25.aeroplane, you know that something is going to happen so quickly. It

:01:26. > :01:30.happened so quickly. The thing was to run to it to see if there was

:01:31. > :01:34.anything that you could do. The pictures show the plane just after

:01:35. > :01:39.she was ditched by the pilot. Incredibly he and a young man,

:01:40. > :01:42.believed to be 25 years old, climbed out unharmed.

:01:43. > :01:46.I arrived at the scene and the light aircraft was just off the beach,

:01:47. > :01:50.partially submerged. Two people in the plane swam to the

:01:51. > :01:55.shore and appear to have only minor injuries and just in shock.

:01:56. > :02:00.Witnesses who saw the incident suggested that the plane lost power,

:02:01. > :02:04.and the pilot has managed to glide the plane safely onto water.

:02:05. > :02:08.Eyewitnesses say that the plane was returning to Shoreham Airport when

:02:09. > :02:16.the engine suddenly spluttered and seemed to stop. The pilot got out

:02:17. > :02:20.and I asked if he owned the plane, I asked him if he was OK and if there

:02:21. > :02:26.was only thing I could get him, he asked for a cigarette! -- anything.

:02:27. > :02:27.The plane may not fly again, but the pilot and the young man had an

:02:28. > :02:28.incredible escape. Lets join Claudia at the scene

:02:29. > :02:31.in Shoreham and Claudia - you've spoken to the pilot this

:02:32. > :02:40.evening... I have, the pilot came down here and

:02:41. > :02:44.was having a look around the plane. He didn't want to speak on camera

:02:45. > :02:49.but was happy to speak to me about what happened. He described the

:02:50. > :02:52.moment when he suddenly realised that the controls were not working.

:02:53. > :02:59.He said he didn't feel scared at all. He just simply glided the plane

:03:00. > :03:04.down, he said it happened very fast, but he was able to calmly get out of

:03:05. > :03:08.the plane, along with the man that he was with, and that's exactly what

:03:09. > :03:13.eyewitnesses said to me. That it was incredible Hulk and they both were.

:03:14. > :03:18.And it did not seem they were affected by what just happened to --

:03:19. > :03:21.how calm they were. His professionalism shone through. The

:03:22. > :03:26.plane is now at the top end of the beach because they wanted it out of

:03:27. > :03:29.the water as quickly as possible, because of the environmental impact

:03:30. > :03:34.of having the plane in the sea. They did not want to leave it there any

:03:35. > :03:37.longer, and Murray is in the process of being removed and taken away. --

:03:38. > :03:41.tomorrow. Claudio, thank you. A judge has said the murder of a man

:03:42. > :03:45.over a Facebook post was "totally senseless",

:03:46. > :03:47.and has issued a warning 27-year-old John Dickson

:03:48. > :03:50.was sentenced to life in prison today for the murder of Carl Gregory

:03:51. > :03:53.in Broadstairs last October. Dickson held his victim in a choke

:03:54. > :03:57.hold for two minutes. It followed an argument over

:03:58. > :04:00.a picture and comment Gregory had posted on line,

:04:01. > :04:09.referring to his former girlfriend. The picture posted on social media,

:04:10. > :04:14.too graphic to show here, that sparked a row that led to a meeting

:04:15. > :04:18.that left a man dead, on a shopping centre floor. The image was

:04:19. > :04:23.published as a joke by Carl Gregory last October. Within hours he had

:04:24. > :04:27.been choked to death by John Dickson from Margate. Today the judge gave

:04:28. > :04:32.him a life sentence for the murder of Carl Gregory. Carl Gregory's

:04:33. > :04:37.death is an absolute tragedy that has had a devastating impact on his

:04:38. > :04:40.family and friends. He was a popular and well liked hard-working young

:04:41. > :04:47.man. He had his whole life in front of him. That life was cruelly cut

:04:48. > :04:53.short by John Dickson. Following an exchange of angry words on social

:04:54. > :04:57.media, Carl Gregory met two men at Western Cross shopping Centre. One

:04:58. > :05:01.of those men was John Dickson. The 27 York Gardner put his victim in a

:05:02. > :05:07.choke hold for nearly two minutes after letting him go, he began to

:05:08. > :05:10.stamp on his head -- 27-year-old gardener.

:05:11. > :05:15.The judge said that Carl Gregory had goaded him into going to the

:05:16. > :05:18.shopping centre at Broadstairs on Facebook.

:05:19. > :05:23.She went on to say that it illustrates the dangers of social

:05:24. > :05:27.media because of the speed of communication.

:05:28. > :05:32.I think the message here is that if you post online, people can get

:05:33. > :05:37.inflamed very easily. I always think it's best to think before you post.

:05:38. > :05:41.Following sentencing, Carl Gregory's family issued a statement outside of

:05:42. > :05:45.the court. The last six months have been a nightmare for all of us. Karl

:05:46. > :05:51.was a loving son, grandson, brother and friend to many people and we

:05:52. > :05:53.miss him every day. In sentencing, the judge told John Dickson that he

:05:54. > :05:57.needs to serve at least 18 years in needs to serve at least 18 years in

:05:58. > :06:01.prison, and added that he may never be released from jail.

:06:02. > :06:08.Ian Palmer, BBC south-east today, Maidstone Crown Court.

:06:09. > :06:11.A woman from Newhaven has spoken of her shock of finding out that

:06:12. > :06:14.a man she helped check into a hotel in Brighton carried out

:06:15. > :06:17.Today a coroner opened and adjourned the inquest

:06:18. > :06:21.He stayed at the Preston Park Hotel last Tuesday, the night before

:06:22. > :06:24.he killed three people by driving into them and fatally

:06:25. > :06:33.He was on the television, on the bridge. I didn't need to see him.

:06:34. > :06:39.There was no doubt in my mind that that was the car. At that point, I

:06:40. > :06:40.was just completely shocked. Completely... I did not know what to

:06:41. > :06:46.do. That is definitely the man. Pupils at an East Sussex primary

:06:47. > :06:49.school were asked to bring in toilet rolls and pencils today -

:06:50. > :06:52.after parents were told finances The children were taking part

:06:53. > :06:56.in a non-uniform fundraising day, but instead of donating money,

:06:57. > :06:58.they were asked to donate essential The head teacher at St John's

:06:59. > :07:01.Primary in Crowborough says schools everywhere are being

:07:02. > :07:04.put under huge financial strain. Our Education Correspondent

:07:05. > :07:15.Bryony Mackenzie reports. Basically, we have asked them to

:07:16. > :07:24.bring in essentials. So things like pencils, rubbers, Sellotape, pens,

:07:25. > :07:28.paper, write down to tissues, toilet roll. These are things that we are

:07:29. > :07:33.struggling to be able to afford. People listen to that and think that

:07:34. > :07:39.is shocking? To be fair, it is meant to be quite shocking. ?500 of

:07:40. > :07:42.essentials. Money that can now be spent elsewhere. This school says

:07:43. > :07:47.that funding cuts are hitting them hard. If we can divert money from

:07:48. > :07:52.buying these kinds of essential buying these kinds of essential

:07:53. > :07:56.resources, we can then fund the education of our children to a

:07:57. > :07:59.greater extent. Making the curriculum interesting for them

:08:00. > :08:05.rather than worry and monitor toilet rolls and glue sticks. We have

:08:06. > :08:09.protected the school budget and are putting record funding into schools.

:08:10. > :08:14.So why our schools claiming there is a funding crisis? There is ?40

:08:15. > :08:17.billion in the school budget but more pupils and increased

:08:18. > :08:20.contributions mean that schools get less money per pupil over the next

:08:21. > :08:26.three years. And how that pot of money is shared

:08:27. > :08:31.is changing, with some getting up to 3% more and others getting 3% less

:08:32. > :08:36.money. This school will lose money in both cases. So what do parents

:08:37. > :08:43.think about paying out for the basics? I was shocked, to be honest.

:08:44. > :08:51.It's a shame that education has become such that fundamentally,

:08:52. > :08:55.worries me. The Department for worries me. The Department for

:08:56. > :09:00.Education says that overall, East Sussex schools will receive more

:09:01. > :09:00.money from next year. The school is considering permanent donation bins

:09:01. > :09:04.to make ends meet. That was Bryony Mackenzie reporting

:09:05. > :09:06.- and Charlotte Wright You've been following this story

:09:07. > :09:14.today - what has the Department The government has said that it

:09:15. > :09:18.believes this new way of funding scores is fairer. And actually the

:09:19. > :09:21.schools we spoke to said that there are some positive changes that the

:09:22. > :09:27.government is making. As you heard in that report, the pot of per-pupil

:09:28. > :09:31.funding itself will get smaller over the next three years which is why

:09:32. > :09:35.we've seen some Conservative MPs from the local area, in East and

:09:36. > :09:40.West Sussex, club together on the issue, lobbying their own government

:09:41. > :09:44.on the issue. There are some education conferences coming up in

:09:45. > :09:47.the next few weeks so we could see some tough questions for the

:09:48. > :09:49.Education Secretary over this issue. Thank you.

:09:50. > :09:51.The warm temperatures broke records today -

:09:52. > :10:05.It will be staying warm first thing, clear blue skies as we ended today.

:10:06. > :10:09.More cloud around for tomorrow, temperatures a little cooler as

:10:10. > :10:14.well. As you heard earlier today, highs of 22 degrees and tomorrow,

:10:15. > :10:19.more like 15 or 16. Mild for this time of year. As we move through

:10:20. > :10:23.tonight, overnight temperatures at ten or 11 degrees. Into the sort of

:10:24. > :10:27.values that we would expect during the afternoon at this time of year.

:10:28. > :10:33.Dry initially as we start the day on Friday but in the morning, this cold

:10:34. > :10:35.front passes eastwards, bringing in some drizzle and a great deal of

:10:36. > :10:41.cloud cover. It clears through and behind it, we see some sunshine. It

:10:42. > :10:46.stays breezy. A south-westerly wind picks up. A bit of a different feel

:10:47. > :10:57.but still temperatures in the mid-teens. More fresh as we get into

:10:58. > :11:00.Saturday, single figures at eight or 9 degrees towards the weekend.

:11:01. > :11:01.Scattered showers on Saturday, brighter by
