:00:18. > :00:20.17 people were taken to hospital this morning after a coach

:00:21. > :00:23.overturned on a motorway slip road in Oxfordshire.

:00:24. > :00:26.It happened on the northbound exit at Junction 7 of the M40,

:00:27. > :00:29.Thick fog made access to the scene more difficult,

:00:30. > :00:32.and the slip road itself was closed for several hours.

:00:33. > :00:47.Passengers escaped in such a hurry they left their belongings behind.

:00:48. > :00:48.16 adults plus the coach driver were taken

:00:49. > :00:51.to the John Radcliffe Hospital after last night's crash.

:00:52. > :00:54.We had to stabilise the coach to prevent it sliding down the bank

:00:55. > :00:57.any further and from rocking from side to side, to make sure

:00:58. > :01:01.Then we had to search the immediate area for anybody that may have been

:01:02. > :01:04.ejected from the vehicle, so we used thermal imaging cameras,

:01:05. > :01:08.we used some of our remote cameras we have there,

:01:09. > :01:10.we had a period of using audible detection, so we needed

:01:11. > :01:22.There was thick fog just before 3am, when the Heathrow Express bus came

:01:23. > :01:26.It went crashing through the barriers and flipped.

:01:27. > :01:28.Certainly it would have been a chaotic scene.

:01:29. > :01:30.You've got people inside who are probably wanting to get out

:01:31. > :01:34.Also their medical welfare needs to be taken into account,

:01:35. > :01:36.and sometimes getting them out quickly isn't necessarily

:01:37. > :01:41.Two things that we are looking into, obviously keeping an open mind,

:01:42. > :01:44.but the two main things are very foggy at the time and the driving

:01:45. > :01:47.conditions and the fact that the bus wouldn't normally be leaving

:01:48. > :01:51.It's not the first time a coach has veered off

:01:52. > :01:59.This on-board footage from 2010 shows the moment when an Oxford Tube

:02:00. > :02:04.bus crashed at the very same slip road.

:02:05. > :02:15.The slip road was closed while barriers were prepared here today.

:02:16. > :02:17.The Oxford Bus Company has been contacting passengers this afternoon

:02:18. > :02:19.and as foggy conditions remain investigations are continuing

:02:20. > :02:24.to try to work out how this crash happened.

:02:25. > :02:27.The fog has caused travel problems across the region today.

:02:28. > :02:31.Poor visibility on the coast - this view

:02:32. > :02:34.across Poole Bay was typical - badly affected the ferries.

:02:35. > :02:37.Wightlink services between Lymington and Yarmouth and Red Funnel

:02:38. > :02:39.crossings between Southampton and East Cowes were suspended, with

:02:40. > :02:45.There have also been delays and cancellations for flights

:02:46. > :02:49.to and from Gatwick, Heathrow and Southampton airports.

:02:50. > :02:52.And football has fallen victim to the fog as well -

:02:53. > :02:54.Brighton's evening Championship match against Cardiff City has been

:02:55. > :03:01.Elsewhere, the railway line between Eastleigh and Basingstoke

:03:02. > :03:03.in Hampshire was closed for much of this morning,

:03:04. > :03:09.after a body was found by the track near Shawford.

:03:10. > :03:12.Rail replacement buses were laid on and the police say they are not

:03:13. > :03:16.Meanwhile, Southern Rail is warning of severe disruption

:03:17. > :03:17.on their network once again, as conductors stage

:03:18. > :03:26.The company says some routes will have no service

:03:27. > :03:29.at all tomorrow, New Year's Day and on Monday the 2nd,

:03:30. > :03:32.while the majority of others will have a very limited service.

:03:33. > :03:37.It is the biggest night out of the year but many people

:03:38. > :03:42.are going to struggle to get home afterwards, as the Southern strikes

:03:43. > :03:48.The RMT insist they are not trying to disrupt

:03:49. > :03:52.We did cancel the strikes on Christmas Eve and the day

:03:53. > :03:56.We've done everything we can to recognise that the public have

:03:57. > :03:59.been wonderful in supporting our position on maintaining

:04:00. > :04:03.the safety-critical role of the guard on the train.

:04:04. > :04:06.Once again Southern say they will have to cancel around 50%

:04:07. > :04:12.Crucially, though, they are warning anyone who is planning to use

:04:13. > :04:15.the trains to get home after a New Year's night out that

:04:16. > :04:17.many later services in particular will be completely cancelled.

:04:18. > :04:21.The conductors are striking over plans to give drivers responsibility

:04:22. > :04:23.for closing train doors, changing the conductors' roles

:04:24. > :04:30.Southern said 220 conductors have signed up to the new contract

:04:31. > :04:34.and many will begin their new roles from the 1st of January.

:04:35. > :04:36.The proposals we have made are entirely reasonable,

:04:37. > :04:38.we think the union's reaction has been unreasonable

:04:39. > :04:45.We think these strikes are absolutely unnecessary

:04:46. > :04:48.and I would call upon the trade unions to call off these strikes

:04:49. > :04:53.A six-day drivers' strike is planned from January the 9th and the unions

:04:54. > :04:56.say they can't rule out further action for 2017 if an

:04:57. > :05:03.Drink-driving is still a big problem in the region,

:05:04. > :05:06.In the first two weeks of the Force's Christmas

:05:07. > :05:10.and New Year crackdown they've arrested more than 140 people.

:05:11. > :05:12.Additional patrols are being carried out in Berkshire to catch

:05:13. > :05:19.A Christmas lights display in a Buckinghamshire village has

:05:20. > :05:23.helped raise money for a girl with a rare health disorder.

:05:24. > :05:26.Frankie Ross from Pitstone has Rett syndrome, which only affects one

:05:27. > :05:34.This dazzling display, now in its 20th year,

:05:35. > :05:39.is raising money for 11-year-old Frankie Ross.

:05:40. > :05:42.She was diagnosed with Rett syndrome when she was a toddler.

:05:43. > :05:45.She potentially would lose her speech, lose

:05:46. > :05:49.purposeful use of her hands, might not be able to walk,

:05:50. > :05:59.could develop scoliosis, epilepsy, breathing difficulties.

:06:00. > :06:02.The community in Pitstone had initially been fundraising to buy

:06:03. > :06:05.a hoist for Frankie for water therapy but thanks to social media

:06:06. > :06:08.two hoists were donated to the family in the last few weeks.

:06:09. > :06:11.This year we have had a great campaign and I believe that we have

:06:12. > :06:16.We all really get on well as neighbours and it was just

:06:17. > :06:19.the perfect opportunity to pull the stops out for Christmas.

:06:20. > :06:30.There are so many worthy causes and to think that Frankie's touched

:06:31. > :06:31.local residents' hearts enough for them to want

:06:32. > :06:34.to fundraise for her I think is absolutely amazing.

:06:35. > :06:37.There is no cure for Rett syndrome but Frankie's family hope more

:06:38. > :06:43.research and funding will help find better treatments in the future.

:06:44. > :06:50.It's a generally cloudy picture as we end the year

:06:51. > :06:53.but for most it should stay dry for the New Year festivities.

:06:54. > :06:55.We are seeing this weather front pushing down

:06:56. > :07:04.Rather cloudy overnight tonight. arrive until the early hours of New

:07:05. > :07:07.Again we've got those problems with fog and there is a Met

:07:08. > :07:09.Office yellow warning in force until ten o'clock tomorrow morning.

:07:10. > :07:11.With more cloud around overnight tonight

:07:12. > :07:14.I don't think it will be quite as cold as it was last night

:07:15. > :07:19.but still the chance of a bit of frost and

:07:20. > :07:21.indeed those fog patches where we do see any clearer skies.

:07:22. > :07:26.It should clear away to low cloud fairly swiftly

:07:27. > :07:32.and one or two breaks possible through the day.

:07:33. > :07:39.There is also a fair amount of cloud tomorrow, temperatures just about

:07:40. > :07:41.scraping into double figures the sum of us. Staying cloudy into New

:07:42. > :07:47.Year's Eve, the rain continues on Year's Eve, the rain continues on

:07:48. > :07:50.New Year's Day, becoming drier and brighter behind that, but it will

:07:51. > :07:54.feel that much colder with frosty nights.

:07:55. > :07:59.I'm back later with more on today's top stories at 10.50 this evening.

:08:00. > :08:09.If you are heading out on the roads, please take care.
