:00:00. > :00:00.In tonight's programme. so it's goodbye from me

:00:00. > :00:09.Losing livestock because of dog attacks.

:00:10. > :00:12.The growing number of sheep being killed or injured by pets that

:00:13. > :00:18.Oxfordshire's new fire officer tells is he wants more women

:00:19. > :00:23.The loophole in licensing laws allowing airport bars to sell

:00:24. > :00:42.There are concerns some farmers in Oxfordshire are facing financial

:00:43. > :00:46.losses because of a growing number of dog attacks on livestock.

:00:47. > :00:52.The rural insurer NFU Mutual says it paid out more

:00:53. > :00:55.than ?6,000 in claims in 2016, compared to around ?1,400

:00:56. > :00:59.It's asking dog walkers to keep their pets on leads in fields.

:01:00. > :01:07.It was so badly chewed and mutilated that he had to shoot it.

:01:08. > :01:13.Sheep-worrying is a growing problem for farmer Edmund Strainge.

:01:14. > :01:19.His flock's been attacked by dogs six times in the past seven years.

:01:20. > :01:21.One ewe had to be put down after the latest, last month.

:01:22. > :01:30.The worst thing about keeping sheep is to see this.

:01:31. > :01:35.Some things you can't control, but you should be

:01:36. > :01:40.The insurer NFU Mutual paid out more than ?6,000

:01:41. > :01:47.That's compares with just over ?1,400 in 2015.

:01:48. > :01:57.There are a number of factors involved.

:01:58. > :02:01.One is that people with dogs today very often are from urban areas.

:02:02. > :02:03.They don't have close links to countryside

:02:04. > :02:10.They don't realise there is the risk of a dog,

:02:11. > :02:13.and it goes back to its heritage as a wolf, can attack sheep.

:02:14. > :02:17.It's a criminal offence for dogs to worry sheep on agricultural land.

:02:18. > :02:21.Owners can be fined up to ?1,000, have their dogs confiscated

:02:22. > :02:24.by the police or council and, in the worst cases,

:02:25. > :02:27.where the farmers believe his sheep are at risk of harm,

:02:28. > :02:29.the farmer has the power to shoot a dog.

:02:30. > :02:47.One magazine said most owners know the risks.

:02:48. > :02:50.Mr Strainge is now focused on looking after the rest of his flock.

:02:51. > :02:53.He hopes his story might prevent further attacks in the future.

:02:54. > :03:04.A man from High Wycombe will serve at least 24 years in prison

:03:05. > :03:11.Ahsan Hassan killed 20-year-old Zofia Sadowska at a disused kebab

:03:12. > :03:14.shop before taking her body back to his home in a taxi last year.

:03:15. > :03:20.Police say he was consumed with jealousy.

:03:21. > :03:23.Police are investigating a suspected rape in Banbury town centre.

:03:24. > :03:26.A woman in her thirties says she was attacked and raped

:03:27. > :03:28.inside a house in Horse Fair in the early hours

:03:29. > :03:35.A 35-year-old man from Banbury has been arrested.

:03:36. > :03:38.It's been revealed that the trust that runs Oxfordshire's hospitals

:03:39. > :03:43.was targeted by cyber criminals in five separate attacks last year.

:03:44. > :03:45.No patient data was compromised and the attack levels

:03:46. > :03:50.But figures from NHS Digital show the number of cyber attacks

:03:51. > :03:52.on hospital trusts in England have more than tripled in

:03:53. > :03:56.The head of cyber security for the Oxford Trust

:03:57. > :03:58.says hackers are likely to increase their attacks,

:03:59. > :04:04.as patient records are moved from paper to an electronic system.

:04:05. > :04:07.Oxfordshire's new Chief Fire Officer is calling for more women

:04:08. > :04:13.Simon Furlong says he wants his force to better reflect society.

:04:14. > :04:15.He's already planning recruitment drives to employ more women

:04:16. > :04:22.The biggest changes for me are improving

:04:23. > :04:28.I want this organisation to reflect the communities we serve in gender

:04:29. > :04:29.representation and from ethnic minorities, black

:04:30. > :04:39.We want to represent the diverse communities within Oxfordshire.

:04:40. > :04:48.We have to step up and carry out more positive action.

:04:49. > :04:51.There is a short, medium and long-term solution.

:04:52. > :04:54.We need to learn from the military who have done a great

:04:55. > :05:01.They have really improved diversity around gender

:05:02. > :05:06.What can women bring to Oxfordshire Fire And Rescue?

:05:07. > :05:12.It allows us to understand our communities more,

:05:13. > :05:20.we can design services that meet needs, gender, ethnic

:05:21. > :05:23.minories to understand the needs of the community.

:05:24. > :05:26.As a white male I can never understand those needs.

:05:27. > :05:28.It is helping to design services and being representative.

:05:29. > :05:34.Possibly recruitment drives in future?

:05:35. > :05:37.Probably next year, and in five years, recruiting fire fighters.

:05:38. > :05:41.We will be advertising have a go days, positive action events.

:05:42. > :05:43.The public will always hear cuts to the emergency services,

:05:44. > :05:46.is that something Oxfordshire needs to be worried about?

:05:47. > :05:48.There is less money in the public purse, we understand that.

:05:49. > :05:50.We need to do things more efficiently and effectively

:05:51. > :06:00.by working together and in partnership.

:06:01. > :06:08.And collaborating with the police, Thames Valley Police and South

:06:09. > :06:14.Central ambulance, and looking at opportunities, looking at shared

:06:15. > :06:19.estates, sites at Farringdon. We have to look at every opportunity to

:06:20. > :06:20.be more effective, efficient and provide value for money for the

:06:21. > :06:22.communities we serve. Police from across the south,

:06:23. > :06:24.including officers from the Thames Valley,

:06:25. > :06:26.have attended the funeral of PC Keith Palmer who was murdered

:06:27. > :06:29.in the Westminster terror attack. Thousands of officers lined

:06:30. > :06:31.the streets of central London to witness the procession of PC

:06:32. > :06:34.Palmer's coffin before his funeral Flags have flown at half-mast

:06:35. > :06:37.from many police stations, in tribute to the victims

:06:38. > :06:42.of the attack. Major road works have started on one

:06:43. > :06:46.of the main routes into Swindon, The work on Akers Way will last 20

:06:47. > :06:49.weeks and will see sections At the moment, there are roadworks

:06:50. > :06:54.between St Mary's Church Roundabout and Cheney Manor Industrial Estate,

:06:55. > :06:56.which will continue Almost ?240,000 has been awarded

:06:57. > :07:06.for a project to help blue badge holders find empty parking

:07:07. > :07:07.spaces in Oxfordshire. The county council's been clamping

:07:08. > :07:10.down on people misusing the badges. 28 badges were seized in one sting

:07:11. > :07:12.operation last year. The new programme will help genuine

:07:13. > :07:15.badge holders in Oxford and Witney Candidates for the upcoming

:07:16. > :07:27.Oxfordshire County Council elections Voters must register by Thursday

:07:28. > :07:30.to be eligible to vote. Let's get more from our political

:07:31. > :07:32.reporter Bethan Phillips. Bethan, any surprises over who's

:07:33. > :07:36.standing for election this year? Any surprises in who's up

:07:37. > :07:40.for election this year? I think what stands out is who's

:07:41. > :07:43.not up for election. There's a total of 18 councillors

:07:44. > :07:47.who've decided to call it a day. Some who have served as councillors

:07:48. > :07:50.for a very long time indeed. It's also interesting to look

:07:51. > :07:52.at who is putting up candidates. There was real local

:07:53. > :07:56.election success across But they didn't win any

:07:57. > :08:00.seats in Oxfordshire. Then, of course, the county voted

:08:01. > :08:03.overall to remain in the EU. And I think that might well be part

:08:04. > :08:07.of the reason that Ukip is only standing this time in 11 of the 63

:08:08. > :08:11.divisions in Oxfordshire. What can we expect

:08:12. > :08:16.in election night? So probably a tense night

:08:17. > :08:20.ahead for everyone. The Conservatives don't have

:08:21. > :08:22.an overall majority at the moment. So they'll be hoping to pick

:08:23. > :08:25.up some extra seats. Whereas the other main parties,

:08:26. > :08:29.Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens, will all be looking to try and stop

:08:30. > :08:33.that from happening. For voters, you've only got

:08:34. > :08:35.until Thursday to register. As always, there's been a push

:08:36. > :08:38.to encourage students to sign up. A big student population in Oxford,

:08:39. > :08:40.and they're not always known for being very organised

:08:41. > :08:42.and registering to vote But Oxford University

:08:43. > :08:47.Students' Union says it's I think it is certainly interesting,

:08:48. > :08:57.the issues, and once we make the connection between the issues

:08:58. > :09:00.they are interested and these elections, then suddenly you get

:09:01. > :09:02.people who are interested, We also have elections coming up

:09:03. > :09:05.for Wiltshire Council Each of the council websites has

:09:06. > :09:14.a full list of candidates. A six-year study into puffins

:09:15. > :09:17.by experts at Oxford University has revealed that birds which stay

:09:18. > :09:19.closer to their partners The migration pattern of puffins has

:09:20. > :09:25.been examined using miniature 12 pairs were studied,

:09:26. > :09:30.and those that stayed on a similar path bred more

:09:31. > :09:32.successfully later on. The project also looked

:09:33. > :09:34.at success rates in breeding, and found that female puffins

:09:35. > :09:37.foraging for food during the winter Gold bars thought to worth

:09:38. > :09:43.?2 million have been found inside the engine of an old military

:09:44. > :09:45.tank bought on eBay. Nick Mead, who lives near Brackley,

:09:46. > :09:48.discovered five gold bars which weigh around five kilograms

:09:49. > :09:50.each hidden inside the tank The tank is thought to have

:09:51. > :09:54.belonged to the Iraqi army Nick won't benefit from

:09:55. > :09:57.the gold, it's been taken I don't knokw whether this

:09:58. > :10:14.is hundreds of thousands One thing for certain,

:10:15. > :10:19.I don't want it sitting Now, if you'd like to get in touch

:10:20. > :10:24.with us here at South Today to tell us about stories you think we should

:10:25. > :10:28.be covering, you can e-mail us. Our address is

:10:29. > :10:29.south.today@bbc.co.uk. Or join the conversation

:10:30. > :10:42.on our Facebook and Twitter pages. The action from Oxford's

:10:43. > :10:44.game against Walsall, and the Swindon v MK Dons match

:10:45. > :10:47.is coming up in a few minutes. Before that, here's

:10:48. > :10:53.the rest of South Today. to witness the procession of PC

:10:54. > :10:56.Palmer's coffin before his funeral at Southwark

:10:57. > :11:03.Cathedral this afternoon. Still to come in South Today,

:11:04. > :11:06.the agony and the ecstasy - a missed chance to win the Masters, but

:11:07. > :11:20.Hampshire clinch victory in style. 18 people have been arrested

:11:21. > :11:23.in an operation by Hampshire and Thames Valley Police,

:11:24. > :11:24.targeting criminals Officers seized cocaine

:11:25. > :11:32.with a street value of around Other arrests were made for crimes

:11:33. > :11:36.including theft and driving Forty-two vehicles were seized

:11:37. > :11:41.for having no insurance or license. 42 vehicles were seized for having

:11:42. > :11:44.no insurance or license. People and businesses in

:11:45. > :11:51.South Reading are calling for more A loophole in licensing laws

:11:52. > :11:53.allowing airport bars to sell alcohol all day,

:11:54. > :11:56.and to under 18s, should be closed Sussex Police say they're currently

:11:57. > :11:59.unable to bring sanctions against bars selling alcohol

:12:00. > :12:01.to children at Gatwick Airport. One airline says it suffered

:12:02. > :12:03.more than 250 incidents of alcohol-fuelled disruption

:12:04. > :12:05.last summer alone. But today Gatwick said it was happy

:12:06. > :12:08.with an industry code of practice and didn't want to see

:12:09. > :12:10.the law tightened. A flight is diverted,

:12:11. > :12:17.and a drunk passenger arrested and later jailed for

:12:18. > :12:26.assaulting a crew member. At the moment, the

:12:27. > :12:27.Licensing Act, which controls the sale of alcohol,

:12:28. > :12:30.does not apply once according to the House of Lords

:12:31. > :12:34.committee set up to scrutinise it, It can be quite intimidating

:12:35. > :12:39.to see a whole gang of people board a plane,

:12:40. > :12:42.obviously the worse for drink, and we believe that the police,

:12:43. > :12:45.the airlines, and the retailers should have the tools

:12:46. > :12:48.to do their job, and therefore the The committee heard from one airline

:12:49. > :13:00.which suffered hundreds of summer. Sussex Police said all but

:13:01. > :13:05.one outlet airside at Gatwick sold alcohol to an under-18

:13:06. > :13:14.test purchaser. Certainly, bringing the licensing

:13:15. > :13:17.laws here at Gatwick into line with those just down the road

:13:18. > :13:20.in Crawley will do something about the sort of people who cannot board

:13:21. > :13:23.a flight at 7am without a large gin But ultimately, the public needs

:13:24. > :13:29.to understand that you cannot get onto an aircraft

:13:30. > :13:32.when you are drunk, or indeed, This former pilot says airport

:13:33. > :13:38.and airline crew can usually step in to stop

:13:39. > :13:42.any potential trouble. As a captain, if somebody walks

:13:43. > :13:45.into an aircraft, and the cabin crew have any concerns,

:13:46. > :13:48.they will be straight into the cockpit, they will say we have just

:13:49. > :13:52.boarded two people, we are not too sure, and straightaway you will just

:13:53. > :13:56.ask for security to come and look at Both airport operators

:13:57. > :14:03.and the Home Office say the current voluntary code of conduct

:14:04. > :14:05.is still the best way forward. The report from the Lords

:14:06. > :14:08.says it is clearly not Sara Smith, BBC

:14:09. > :14:20.South Today, Gatwick. People and businesses in south

:14:21. > :14:22.Reading are calling for more This space behind shops

:14:23. > :14:26.on the Shinfield Road has But local residents say each time it

:14:27. > :14:31.fills up again within days and they've so far not been able

:14:32. > :14:34.to find out exactly The rubbish is often dumped

:14:35. > :14:37.at night, it attracts rats and people renting garages

:14:38. > :14:43.here can't get to them. We did once use it for parking and,

:14:44. > :14:46.obviously, you can't now. It has got a really bad smell

:14:47. > :14:49.and it is really not There is children coming

:14:50. > :14:59.out of the houses Nearly four months after it closed,

:15:00. > :15:01.a community application to reopen a Berkshire swimming pool

:15:02. > :15:03.is being considered The Arthur Hill Memorial

:15:04. > :15:08.Baths shut in December after Reading Borough Council said

:15:09. > :15:11.it couldn't afford to keep it open. Swimmers who used the pool have

:15:12. > :15:14.submitted an outline business plan and set up a community interest

:15:15. > :15:17.company to run it if necessary. More than ?10,000 was raised

:15:18. > :15:21.through an appeal to take Dorset Police's marine unit has been

:15:22. > :15:30.drafted in to help tackle gangs of poachers raiding birds'

:15:31. > :15:33.nests in Poole Harbour. Nests of rare and protected

:15:34. > :15:35.Mediterranean gulls have been disturbed on several

:15:36. > :15:37.of the islands there. The charity Birds of Poole Harbour

:15:38. > :16:00.is assessing the damage. The torturers are looking for eggs.

:16:01. > :16:08.This, a chicken's egg, probably worth about 20p. -- the poachers.

:16:09. > :16:14.These documents are a delicacy, they are a delicacy, but the higher on

:16:15. > :16:21.the available for a few weeks a year. -- viz duck eggs. They can

:16:22. > :16:26.legally only be collected from four sites, none of which are in Dorset.

:16:27. > :16:29.Such is the capital's appetite, that people are now prepared to break the

:16:30. > :16:35.law. Poole Harbour is

:16:36. > :16:36.a haven for wildlife. The Mediterranean gull has made some

:16:37. > :16:39.of the islands its home, Almost 70% of the colony have

:16:40. > :16:42.disappeared, been taken. We found the nests empty

:16:43. > :16:44.and the islands which are uninhabited and have no human access

:16:45. > :16:48.were crisscrossed with footprints. So we came to the understanding

:16:49. > :16:50.that, unfortunately, The Mediterranean gull

:16:51. > :16:54.in the foreground looks very similar And it is the demand

:16:55. > :17:00.for black-headed gull eggs that is threatening

:17:01. > :17:02.the Mediterranean gull. Black-headed gull eggs have

:17:03. > :17:04.been deemed safe to eat However, no-one's ever tested

:17:05. > :17:08.Mediterranean gull eggs. Now, this is a schedule one species

:17:09. > :17:11.heavily protected by law, and they are potentially being sold

:17:12. > :17:13.in areas that no-one knows whether they are

:17:14. > :17:16.safe to eat or not, OK? So there is a big health

:17:17. > :17:18.issue attached to this. Now Dorset Police are patrolling

:17:19. > :17:20.the waters and asking anyone who sees anything suspicious

:17:21. > :17:22.to contact them. We will be looking at anyone

:17:23. > :17:25.who should not be on the islands because they are protected islands

:17:26. > :17:27.themselves. There has been no licence

:17:28. > :17:30.issued within Dorset. So anyone in the wrong place

:17:31. > :17:33.at the wrong time and should not be there will obviously come

:17:34. > :17:37.to our attention. It is not illegal to set foot

:17:38. > :17:40.on the islands but police want to talk to this

:17:41. > :17:42.man, seen recently. The nesting sites are being

:17:43. > :17:45.monitored now as the breeding But the impact is already

:17:46. > :17:50.being felt elsewhere. An entire brood of tern chicks

:17:51. > :17:53.on Brownsea were eaten by the gulls Birds of Poole Harbour are keeping

:17:54. > :18:03.a close eye on what happens next. Interesting issue. Looking lovely in

:18:04. > :18:08.Poole Harbour. We will have the weather shortly before us, the

:18:09. > :18:13.sport. If I am a bit bleary eyed, it is because I was watching the

:18:14. > :18:17.Masters, Justin Rose! You could not leave it. Half past

:18:18. > :18:22.midnight, could not go to bed. Dramatic night. Lots up injured in

:18:23. > :18:26.the night. During the evening, breaking news from Reading FC.

:18:27. > :18:28.Reading's co-owner has told South Today the Thai consortium

:18:29. > :18:31.who run the Championship club are selling reluctantly but that

:18:32. > :18:34.a Chinese brother and sister can do a lot better for the Royals.

:18:35. > :18:36.Lady Sasima Srivikorn talked to South Today after the Football

:18:37. > :18:38.League cleared the way for a takeover at

:18:39. > :18:41.But as Ben Moore reports, the Premier League may

:18:42. > :18:45.Only the Canaries were singing at the Royals' 7-1 drubbing

:18:46. > :18:51.But although humiliating, the defeat will not realistically damage

:18:52. > :19:00.The news less than 24 hours later that the Football League have

:19:01. > :19:02.conditionally approved a Chinese takeover will have

:19:03. > :19:06.To tell you the truth, we do not want to sell the club.

:19:07. > :19:08.But we have not much choice, you know?

:19:09. > :19:22.It is just endless, OK, and very expensive.

:19:23. > :19:24.This brother and sister made a fortune building underground

:19:25. > :19:32.The pair are not strangers to English football and tried to buy

:19:33. > :19:35.Hull last summer but were thwarted because of concerns over

:19:36. > :19:38.That has led to concerns that there could be another block,

:19:39. > :19:41.denying the Royals access to the Premier League if they go up.

:19:42. > :19:47.We like this brother and sister team.

:19:48. > :19:50.I think they are sincere and they can do a lot

:19:51. > :19:59.Are you worried at all that the Chinese had their application

:20:00. > :20:04.to take over Hull FC blocked by the Premier League?

:20:05. > :20:08.I am not worried because I am sure, at the end of the day, the EPL

:20:09. > :20:18.And if they pass them, that means it is good.

:20:19. > :20:22.Reading could face one big change with the possibility of a takeover,

:20:23. > :20:24.long-time chairman Sir John Madejski could finally take

:20:25. > :20:29.Reading's defeat doesn't harm their play off hopes.

:20:30. > :20:33.It was a great weekend for Brighton, whose victory on Friday night at QPR
