:00:17. > :00:19.on Boxing Day, had his bedding drenched with water

:00:20. > :00:24.The store says it was an accident, but there has been an angry reaction

:00:25. > :00:29.from many in Portsmouth, as Roger Finn reports.

:00:30. > :00:31.Russell Allen was sleeping in a doorway at Debenhams

:00:32. > :00:34.in Portsmouth, on Boxing Day morning, when he was woken

:00:35. > :00:37.by a security guard and told to move on.

:00:38. > :00:39.Sneaky little comment as he walked away.

:00:40. > :00:42.I argued back, said to him, there's no need to be like this, you

:00:43. > :00:45.don't realise what people are going through.

:00:46. > :00:47.He just continued being rude, walked off.

:00:48. > :00:49.I've gone to pack up all my bedding and whatnot,

:00:50. > :00:52.lifted up my sheet and it's absolutely soaking, and I don't mean

:00:53. > :00:56.just a little bit - it was absolutely drenched.

:00:57. > :00:59.There was an outpouring of sympathy on social media,

:01:00. > :01:10.We could all be in that situation one day, who knows?

:01:11. > :01:13.I think it's awful, to be honest with you, mate.

:01:14. > :01:17.I don't know how, with the Christmas spirit, how they can do

:01:18. > :01:20.I've been homeless over the years myself and I wouldn't

:01:21. > :01:23.In a statement, Debenhams say they take

:01:24. > :01:25.this matter seriously and have investigated it.

:01:26. > :01:28.They say it was an unfortunate accident, in which some

:01:29. > :01:32.routine cleaning on the inside of the fire exit resulted in the

:01:33. > :01:37.gentleman's property on the outside of the fire exit becoming wet.

:01:38. > :01:40.Debenhams have apologised to Russel Allen and provided him

:01:41. > :01:45.But there have been threats against members of their staff

:01:46. > :01:48.and one local councillor, who has been homeless himself,

:01:49. > :01:52.This isn't just about this incident - it's

:01:53. > :01:57.And it's an opportunity for us to raise awareness for the homeless

:01:58. > :02:01.and hopefully bring the business sector a bit closer to working

:02:02. > :02:09.with us for the greater understanding of the homeless.

:02:10. > :02:11.A man's appeared in court in Portsmouth charged

:02:12. > :02:14.with manslaughter, following the death of a 57-year-old man

:02:15. > :02:18.Nick Medlin was a father of two and worked as a prison

:02:19. > :02:22.He died at the Rose Inn on Pier Street in Ventnor,

:02:23. > :02:24.in the early hours of Christmas morning.

:02:25. > :02:27.32-year-old Michael Hudson, of no fixed address,

:02:28. > :02:33.He'll appear at Winchester Crown Court in January.

:02:34. > :02:36.St Mary's hospital on the Isle of Wight has been on black

:02:37. > :02:39.Planned operations were cancelled in response to very high

:02:40. > :02:44.However, the hospital's operations director told the BBC this morning

:02:45. > :02:47.that measures to ease the pressure were working.

:02:48. > :02:49.Extra nurses and doctors were brought in and more

:02:50. > :02:55.The outgoing chief executive in charge of three of Hampshire's

:02:56. > :02:58.hospitals, has spoken about the difficult times

:02:59. > :03:03.Mary Edwards is responsible for Hampshire Hospitals Trust,

:03:04. > :03:06.with sites in Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke.

:03:07. > :03:09.As she comes to the end of 40 years working in the NHS,

:03:10. > :03:16.she spoke to our reporter, Joe Campbell.

:03:17. > :03:19.Mary Edwards isn't saying goodbye just yet,

:03:20. > :03:21.but come the New Year this will no longer be one

:03:22. > :03:26.That doesn't stop her noting the emergency department here hasn't

:03:27. > :03:30.been spruced up under the last three Prime Ministers.

:03:31. > :03:34.Really we ought to be investing in new lifts so that we didn't

:03:35. > :03:40.have to keep repairing, but each lift is probably up to ?250,000 and

:03:41. > :03:46.at the moment we can't prioritise that above other things.

:03:47. > :03:48.One priority will be keeping overseas staff,

:03:49. > :03:51.many of whom have been unsettled by the past year's events.

:03:52. > :03:54.So what does she say to those negotiating Brexit?

:03:55. > :03:57.I would be asking them to do their best to try and

:03:58. > :04:01.make sure we don't destabilise those people who work in an

:04:02. > :04:06.We need staff from overseas, and we need them to feel

:04:07. > :04:10.Soon there will be a new picture hanging here and, after

:04:11. > :04:13.forking out a hefty sum for health care to visit family

:04:14. > :04:17.in Australia and the US, on her retirement Mary Edwards

:04:18. > :04:25.for one remains convinced the NHS is still a bit of a bargain.

:04:26. > :04:28.Now, if you've ever tried hula hooping you'll know it's

:04:29. > :04:31.But that hasn't stopped a schoolgirl from Oxford.

:04:32. > :04:35.Poppy Campion has raised more than ?2500 for charity this week,

:04:36. > :04:38.by hula hooping nonstop for half an hour.

:04:39. > :04:40.The money is going to the charity Seesaw,

:04:41. > :04:44.Poppy came up with the idea after her grandfather

:04:45. > :04:49.We rode on the tractor in the garden.

:04:50. > :04:55.We painted, we played the piano together.

:04:56. > :04:59.She was literally the light of his life, from the moment she was born.

:05:00. > :05:04.They both loved each other very, very dearly.

:05:40. > :05:42.turning it rather cloudy and damp for a time, before colder

:05:43. > :05:45.For tonight, though, quite a lot of fog around

:05:46. > :05:48.again - maybe not quite as dense as the past couple of nights,

:05:49. > :05:52.with a bit more of a breeze stirring it around, but it will be

:05:53. > :05:54.another cold night - quite a widespread frost again,

:05:55. > :05:56.particularly in rural parts, with temperatures down

:05:57. > :05:59.Tomorrow starts off rather cold and foggy once again,

:06:00. > :06:01.and a cloudier day tomorrow than we've seen today.

:06:02. > :06:03.One or two brighter spells are a strong possibility, but

:06:04. > :06:07.a lot more in the way of cloud, and with a bit more breeze it

:06:08. > :06:09.won't feel particularly warm either, with temperatures

:06:10. > :06:12.Staying cloudy into New Year's Eve, slightly milder for the

:06:13. > :06:15.weekend though, and then we see that rain passing through first
