:00:42. > :00:47.What were you doing and where were you when you heard the news?
:00:48. > :00:51.I heard what I thought was a thunderclap over in Cowley
:00:52. > :00:56.and then the next thing I knew I was getting a telephone call off
:00:57. > :00:59.the Oxford Mail and they asked me if I knew anything about the explosion
:01:00. > :01:03.Obviously I had to say no, so we rushed straight down
:01:04. > :01:04.there and we weren't allowed anywhere near.
:01:05. > :01:08.The thought hit me, what if we had been in there at the time
:01:09. > :01:10.or just walking past when the explosion struck?
:01:11. > :01:11.Earlier this month, police confirmed one man,
:01:12. > :01:15.48-year-old Guido Schuette, died in the blast.
:01:16. > :01:19.You've been away from your home for three-and-a-half, four weeks now.
:01:20. > :01:22.You must be desperate to get back home.
:01:23. > :01:25.The people where we are, the other residents there,
:01:26. > :01:30.But the room that we are in is a small room
:01:31. > :01:35.I've not been able to take my assistance dog there.
:01:36. > :01:38.Trying to find our way round a new area with visual
:01:39. > :01:43.You were supposed to be back at home today but you're not there.
:01:44. > :01:51.Sammy and I returned there yesterday evening to get the flat ready

:04:21. > :04:23.But the future's not as far away as we might think, according
:04:24. > :04:26.to experts in Oxfordshire, and it could help solve some
:04:27. > :04:30.If we can centrally control where the autonomous cars are driving,
:04:31. > :04:32.maybe we can have different cars take different routes
:04:33. > :04:35.and reduce congestion, though if the cars can communicate
:04:36. > :04:38.with each other then perhaps we can have them travelling more closely
:04:39. > :04:41.together on the motorways, maybe even at higher speeds.
:04:42. > :04:44.So because the cars can all communicate with each other,
:04:45. > :04:48.it's much safer and we can look much further ahead than we could do
:04:49. > :04:52.So what is it actually like travelling in a driverless car?
:04:53. > :05:01.So it's essentially answering three questions of where am I?
:05:02. > :05:09.Like a GPS can say I know where I am.
:05:10. > :05:11.For what's around us, we have the laser sensors
:05:12. > :05:17.What to do next is inside the computer.
:05:18. > :05:23.The government is sending clear signals it believes
:05:24. > :05:27.It's now hoped that some of the ?270 million announced
:05:28. > :05:30.in this week's Budget for new technology will find
:05:31. > :05:34.So we're already applying for some of that grant funding.
:05:35. > :05:38.It's very important for a small company like us to get these sorts
:05:39. > :05:40.of grants because it really helps us grow.
:05:41. > :05:42.It helps us to take more risks on projects.
:05:43. > :05:46.And when it comes to trying out driverless cars,
:05:47. > :05:49.Culham Science Centre is the perfect place.
:05:50. > :05:52.It's got a network of roads but is also a fairly
:05:53. > :05:55.There are plans for it to become a major testing site,
:05:56. > :06:01.putting Oxfordshire at the forefront of this technology.
:06:02. > :06:04.Well, it's been great because we've seen the evolution.
:06:05. > :06:07.We started off some time ago with cars just going around closed
:06:08. > :06:09.car parks and just trying to get from A to B.
:06:10. > :06:12.And then we've extended onto the roads and we've used
:06:13. > :06:15.an increasing amount of our road network with roundabouts,
:06:16. > :06:18.crossroads and we've seen the technology evolve.
:06:19. > :06:21.The Oxford-based company behind this car are hoping to triple
:06:22. > :06:27.And with the knowledge and expertise that Oxfordshire has,
:06:28. > :06:29.it's expected the county will remain in the driving seat
:06:30. > :06:33.when it comes to getting this technology out on our roads.
