:00:10. > :00:12.Our region became the battle-ground for the opening shots

:00:13. > :00:15.of this election as both Prime Minister Theresa May and

:00:16. > :00:18.And as our political editor Peter Henley reports,

:00:19. > :00:34.the main issue today was not Brexit but education.

:00:35. > :00:41.It outside, a man in a chicken suit sent by a newspaper. And so the

:00:42. > :00:45.traditional campaigning for British elections begins. Compare to David

:00:46. > :00:49.Cameron, Theresa May was less polished, Chris Burke, more direct,

:00:50. > :00:54.but genuine questions were asked and answered. On the high cost of

:00:55. > :00:57.housing in the Thames Valley, student fees, apprenticeships, and

:00:58. > :01:01.there was an EU national team to stay in Britain.

:01:02. > :01:06.How can you reassure me my life is not going to change after Brexit?

:01:07. > :01:10.IC, as I sat around that table, I see a lot of goodwill on this issue,

:01:11. > :01:13.and people wanting to give that reassurance, and I hope we will be

:01:14. > :01:18.able to do that at an early stage. These apprentices voting for the

:01:19. > :01:21.first time had not seen a Prime Minister before.

:01:22. > :01:28.First time, yeah. Are you excited about it? Yeah.

:01:29. > :01:32.It is real and engaging, gets across cost you a bit better.

:01:33. > :01:34.When you hear about her, that background noise is great great as

:01:35. > :01:39.well. 15 miles down the road, the Labour

:01:40. > :01:42.leader was a Swindon Central Community Centre. Not quite the same

:01:43. > :01:48.cavalcade of cars. We are 72 hours into this election

:01:49. > :01:51.campaign. We are 72 hours into the opportunity of our lifetime to

:01:52. > :01:55.challenge the inequality and injustice that exist in Britain

:01:56. > :01:59.today. The audience were more fired up than

:02:00. > :02:02.in Maidenhead, but these were his own supporters.

:02:03. > :02:05.It is lovely to meet you. I am the head of English, so if you could do

:02:06. > :02:10.something for us, that would be great. We need some teachers.

:02:11. > :02:17.A pledge from Jeremy Corbyn today to reduce class sizes, and Theresa

:02:18. > :02:22.Mayweather at Cox Green school, where the head teacher led her sixth

:02:23. > :02:23.formers do the talking. Expect more speeches, more visits, and neither

:02:24. > :02:25.side should count their chickens. And Peter told me the two leaders

:02:26. > :02:35.are very different in their style. Yes, quite a contrast. As you would

:02:36. > :02:39.expect, Jeremy Corbyn, walking into the Swindon community centre on his

:02:40. > :02:43.own. To Reza me, with all his security around her here in

:02:44. > :02:46.Maidenhead. But then, Jeremy Corbyn will take some flak for talking

:02:47. > :02:50.mostly to his own supporters. He will have to get out on the

:02:51. > :02:54.doorstep, dangerous place though it has been for Gordon Brown and Ed

:02:55. > :02:59.Miliband before him. He seems to be enjoying himself, to Reza me too was

:03:00. > :03:04.enjoying herself here. Talking to real people, the sixth formers at

:03:05. > :03:07.Cox Green school, the staff at the toothpaste factory. They were not

:03:08. > :03:11.planted questions, they were able to ask whatever they like, though it is

:03:12. > :03:15.a difficult thing. The boss says, stand around in a circle, then the

:03:16. > :03:19.Prime Minister arrives. Not the easiest situation, but the campaign

:03:20. > :03:24.is underway, and we're starting to see some pledges, Jeremy Corbyn.

:03:25. > :03:27.School class sizes, something parents are concerned about, to Reza

:03:28. > :03:29.me talking about spending on foreign aid. So as the campaign goes on,

:03:30. > :03:31.we're going to see both sides we're going to see both sides

:03:32. > :03:32.nailing their colours to the mast. An Aylesbury man has pleaded not

:03:33. > :03:36.guilty to murdering his brother - 18-year-old Brandon Lavender stands

:03:37. > :03:44.accused of stabbing 26 year Police were called to Meadowcroft

:03:45. > :03:47.in Aylesbury on the 17th of January. Daniel died later at

:03:48. > :03:49.Stoke Mandeville hospital. Brandon is due to

:03:50. > :03:51.stand trial in June. Formula One equipment will be

:03:52. > :03:54.auctioned off to the public next month after the collapse

:03:55. > :03:56.of the Banbury based More than 4,000 redundant parts

:03:57. > :04:00.are going under the hammer. Efforts to find a new backer failed

:04:01. > :04:04.and more than 200 staff were made A family-run Cotswolds firm has

:04:05. > :04:09.proved an unexpected hit in Japan. Huffkins have tearooms

:04:10. > :04:13.in Witney and Burford. A quintessentially British

:04:14. > :04:21.tea time treat, it has Whether your jam or cream goes

:04:22. > :04:31.on first, there's no denying we love our little cake

:04:32. > :04:33.more than anyone else. Welcome to Japan - seconds

:04:34. > :04:38.after opening the doors, this food hall is full of people running

:04:39. > :04:43.to get their hands on a scone. And the lady responsible

:04:44. > :04:47.for meeting their needs is Lorna, bakery manager from

:04:48. > :05:03.Oxfordshire-based company Huffkins. We had people out there queueing for

:05:04. > :05:04.our cream teas. They were showing scrapbooks, pictures on them. They

:05:05. > :05:08.love the British. This pop-up tearoom saw 14,000

:05:09. > :05:11.scones made and sold Founded in 1890 in Burford, Huffkins

:05:12. > :05:14.has built a presence locally, but recent trips to Japan have

:05:15. > :05:30.seen its scones, and merchandise, The traditions of taking TR similar

:05:31. > :05:34.in Japan and Britain. We're both tea loving nations, and you can't have a

:05:35. > :05:37.cup of tea without a good scum. We are expecting to send our first

:05:38. > :05:41.exports in May. We will be stocked in some of the largest department

:05:42. > :05:45.store groups in the country. It is a hugely exciting prospect for us.

:05:46. > :05:47.And the company's growth hasn't gone unnoticed back at home,

:05:48. > :05:50.as it recently won three accolades at the West Oxfordshire

:05:51. > :05:59.To go over to Japan, make 14,000 scums in a glass case, being watched

:06:00. > :06:03.by all the Japanese, was a phenomenal achievement. -- 14,000

:06:04. > :06:04.scones. They are a very successful wholesale business as well as a

:06:05. > :06:05.local tearoom. Are there any signs that

:06:06. > :06:16.their scones were now big in Japan? We came in with my wife because she

:06:17. > :06:22.looks through a Japanese guidebook and the Japanese guidebook said this

:06:23. > :06:27.was the place to have your scones. I think we had a few limitations in

:06:28. > :06:31.London, but this was by far the tastiest.

:06:32. > :06:34.So what started off as a very British treaty now seems to be an

:06:35. > :06:41.international delicacy. If you want to try one of the best, come down

:06:42. > :06:46.here, because when it's gone, 'scone.

:06:47. > :06:48.With jokes like that, it is a shame he was not on the other side of the

:06:49. > :06:49.film! The weather's next starting

:06:50. > :06:56.with the regional forecast Hello there. Plenty of cloud in the

:06:57. > :07:00.picture. Tonight is no different. Staying largely cloudy and dry. One

:07:01. > :07:04.or two breaks in the cloud. Temperatures will respond as well.

:07:05. > :07:11.Temperatures in our towns and cities will be around eight, lower in rural

:07:12. > :07:14.areas. By dawn, we might see one to spot of rain, so perhaps some

:07:15. > :07:21.dampness to start the day on Saturday. Seeing some good, bright

:07:22. > :07:26.weather developing, sunny skies into the afternoon, highs of around

:07:27. > :07:27.13-14. Sunday, chilly start with a touch of frost possible first thing,

:07:28. > :07:35.but brightening up of the day marathon. Here is the outlook for

:07:36. > :07:36.the weather for the next few days and Helen Willetts has the National

:07:37. > :07:49.forecast. While unusual to see snow in May, it

:07:50. > :07:53.will be a shock to the system. We've seen some interesting contrast. 19

:07:54. > :07:58.degrees cost is in Scotland in the sunshine today. In the sunshine only

:07:59. > :08:04.11. The differences we are behind a cold weather front. Seeing a stepped

:08:05. > :08:09.down in temperatures. The cold air filtering sound so there will be a

:08:10. > :08:12.widespread ground frost across the country. The week weather front

:08:13. > :08:18.still with us so we could cheat patchy mist and fog. The best chance

:08:19. > :08:22.of seeing the meteor shower overnight will be in those clear

:08:23. > :08:26.skies further north. A better chance for south overnight. We start

:08:27. > :08:28.Saturday morning with the line of cloud, the weather front from

:08:29. > :08:29.Northern Ireland
