:00:06. > :00:09.Is welcome to South Today. In the programme. The murder plot to kill

:00:10. > :00:14.a grandfather for money. How a family used the internet to find

:00:14. > :00:18.out how to do it. It is shocking that children so young should be

:00:18. > :00:23.involved in a crime like this. Seafront history burned to the

:00:23. > :00:27.ground, as hundreds of people nearby are moved to safety.

:00:27. > :00:31.Climbing the stairway to heaven. The topping out ceremony for

:00:31. > :00:36.Arundel Cathedral's spire. And Hollywood royalty and the real

:00:36. > :00:46.thing go head-to-head at Cowes. have never done anything like this,

:00:46. > :00:51.

:00:51. > :00:55.it is superamazing. I have never They tried to kill their

:00:55. > :01:00.grandfather for 400,000. Tonight, three members of his family from

:01:00. > :01:04.Hampshire have been found guilty of conspiracy to murder. His youngest

:01:04. > :01:07.grand daughter who was 13 at the time of the attack was found not

:01:07. > :01:13.guilty of conspiracy to murder but guilty of malicious wounding. It

:01:13. > :01:20.was a bid to get their inheritance early. Legal restrictions mean we

:01:20. > :01:24.can't identify any of the individuals. Yes, well, this

:01:24. > :01:29.conspiracy plot has been sitting for six weeks at Winchester Crown

:01:29. > :01:32.Court and this afternoon we saw the conclusion of an often complicated

:01:33. > :01:37.case. Dates back to the 15th November last year, when five

:01:37. > :01:41.people travelled together, to a village near Winchester where they

:01:41. > :01:45.attacked the elderly man this his front garden of his hope. Let me

:01:45. > :01:49.show you how they were corrected. Victim was an 89-year-old

:01:50. > :01:53.grandfather and Tay tempt to kill him involved his 48-year-old

:01:53. > :01:58.adopted daughter. Her 19-year-old son along with his girlfriend who

:01:58. > :02:04.was 16. The court heard the woman's two daughter, now aged 15 and 14

:02:04. > :02:08.played a significant part in the attack. It is shocking family

:02:08. > :02:12.should do this to someone who is related to them. It appears to be a

:02:12. > :02:17.crime that is motivated by greed and nothing else. But children were

:02:17. > :02:20.involved? Yes. I think the families need to have a look at how they

:02:20. > :02:24.influence the children and what they did. Gu again it is shocking

:02:24. > :02:30.children so young should be involved in a crime like this.

:02:30. > :02:35.grandfather survived but was left with serious injury, unsurprising

:02:35. > :02:40.as he has been beaten round the head with bricks. He is in a care

:02:40. > :02:46.home now. The police found the mother had been searching the web

:02:46. > :02:50.using phrases like "Where can you hurt someone by hitting them". The

:02:50. > :02:54.prosecution say the family tried to kill the grandfather on other

:02:54. > :02:58.occasions, including trying to scare him to death and trying to

:02:58. > :03:02.blow up his car by tampering with the battery. This afternoon the

:03:02. > :03:06.four eldest defendants were found guilty of conspiracy to murder, a

:03:06. > :03:09.charge which could carry a life sentence. The man's youngest

:03:10. > :03:17.granddaughter, 13 at the time, was found guilty of malicious wounding.

:03:17. > :03:22.They will all be sentenced later in the year. As more strike action is

:03:22. > :03:28.planned for Southampton, the City Council says it won't rule out

:03:28. > :03:32.sacking Taff who take part. Unions rejected an offer to end the

:03:32. > :03:42.ongoing dispute. The council says its proposal would have seen an

:03:42. > :03:46.improved deal for more than half of the workers. It was thought this

:03:46. > :03:52.could all be over. This week, the council put forward an offer to

:03:52. > :03:55.reduce the pay cut. The unions considered suspending strikes but

:03:55. > :04:00.this afternoon their members rejected the deal, voting four to

:04:00. > :04:04.one against it. They have had 8 million taken out of their wages by

:04:04. > :04:08.this administration, they don't accept that. They have voted to

:04:08. > :04:13.continue taking strike action, until they pay is restored.

:04:13. > :04:19.from the end of this week, anyone still on strike could lose their

:04:19. > :04:24.job. Why? Because there is already been 12 weeks of action. After that

:04:24. > :04:28.employment law says there needs to be a new ballot. Without that,

:04:29. > :04:33.employers can legally sack staff who remain on strike. Today's vote

:04:33. > :04:36.wasn't an official strike ballot. To say now we will sack people that

:04:36. > :04:42.are on strike is something I don't want to consider, if I can possibly

:04:42. > :04:46.help it. We will not allow people to continue to be disrupted by this

:04:46. > :04:49.strike action. Whatever we need do we will do that ensure residents

:04:49. > :04:53.are protected. Council says the deal was the best they can afford.

:04:53. > :04:58.But unions say they will still fight on. So for now the pickets

:04:58. > :05:02.and the -- pickets and the placards will stay. Alex is here with me in

:05:02. > :05:06.the studio. So what is likely to happen now? That is what even wants

:05:06. > :05:10.to know? Tfrpblgts unions say it is unlikely the council will go ahead

:05:10. > :05:14.and sack everybody, and clearly the council doesn't want do that either.

:05:14. > :05:17.So I think it is almost certain now, that we are going to have some more

:05:17. > :05:21.strikes. The current round will end on Sunday, the unions are going to

:05:21. > :05:25.meet up tomorrow to discuss who is going to go out next. They are not

:05:25. > :05:30.ruling out anyone so we could see more bin strike, Liberian, social

:05:30. > :05:35.worker, I am told it will start again at the beginning of September.

:05:35. > :05:38.What we don't know is when it will end. The council thought it made

:05:38. > :05:42.serious concessions with this offer taking half the people out of the

:05:42. > :05:45.pay cut and reducing it for everybody else, but the unions say

:05:45. > :05:49.they don't think there should be any sort of pay cut, so we are back

:05:49. > :05:52.to having two sides at loggerheads. What has been interesting about

:05:52. > :05:56.this is other councils have been watching carefully to see what the

:05:56. > :06:00.outcome is. They have. Southampton has been the first to introduce

:06:00. > :06:03.these pay cut, in the south so far we haven't heard of others but in

:06:03. > :06:08.Shropshire the unions have balloting for action because the

:06:08. > :06:12.council is doing the same thing. Thank you. Thames Valley Police

:06:12. > :06:16.have reduced the number of officers sent to London to help deal with

:06:16. > :06:22.riots. The other five forces retaining the same amount of ate in

:06:22. > :06:28.-- aid in the capital. A man from Dorset has been released on bail

:06:28. > :06:32.after being charged with inciting a riot. 15 people were arrested over

:06:32. > :06:36.isolated incidents. The elections watchdog has confirmed it has

:06:36. > :06:40.received a fresh complaint made about Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne's

:06:40. > :06:43.election spending. The town's former Liberal Democrat mayor Glynn

:06:44. > :06:47.Davies-Dear says Mr Huhne failed to properly declare his spending. The

:06:47. > :06:51.MP has previously denied similar allegations. The Electoral

:06:51. > :06:56.Commission will decide whether to carry out a case review or formal

:06:56. > :07:00.investigation. A massive fire in Southsea that has destroyed a

:07:00. > :07:03.landmark building is causing disruption for the second night

:07:03. > :07:09.running. Alternative accommodation has had to be found for round 200

:07:09. > :07:12.hotel guest and loebg residents. The building is part owned by the

:07:12. > :07:20.former Portsmouth football manager Harry Redknapp. We are live in

:07:20. > :07:24.Southsea now. Yes, the Savoy court building on South Parade was

:07:24. > :07:28.ungulfed in what can only be described as a spectacular fire

:07:28. > :07:32.yesterday afternoon. It was empty at the time, and no-one was hurt.

:07:32. > :07:35.Now, many residents and hotel guests were moved from nearby

:07:35. > :07:38.buildings, it had been hoped they would be able to return this

:07:39. > :07:42.afternoon but that hasn't been possible because parts of the

:07:42. > :07:46.building are structurally unsound. Another big problem is that there

:07:46. > :07:53.is an electricity sub-station in the basement and at the moment no

:07:53. > :07:58.power is getting to Southsea pier. Smoke was still rising today from

:07:58. > :08:02.hotspot, deep in the basement of the Savoy court building on the

:08:02. > :08:07.seafront. It used to house several nightclubs, it has been empty for

:08:07. > :08:11.some time. The fire started yesterday afternoon, sending smoke

:08:11. > :08:14.billowing into the sky. Several South Today viewers took photos.

:08:14. > :08:18.The smoke was visible for miles round. I only walked past it a

:08:18. > :08:23.couple of hours before it happened with my nephew and happened to say

:08:23. > :08:28.your mummy and I used to go dancing in there, and it is weird, a couple

:08:28. > :08:31.of hours later and this is what has happened. I think there was a

:08:31. > :08:35.general fear, but people weren't panicking, we were talking to one

:08:35. > :08:38.another, making sure we were all right. That was all really.

:08:38. > :08:41.Yesterday, the next door royal beach hotel was evacuated and it

:08:41. > :08:47.was forced to shut again this afternoon because of concerns about

:08:47. > :08:51.the safety of the fire damaged building. Leaving staff to find

:08:51. > :08:54.alternative accommodation for round 170 guests. From now on until the

:08:54. > :08:58.end of the weekend I have five wedding reception, Friday, Saturday

:08:58. > :09:04.and Sunday, so I am keeping my fingers crossed it all gets taken

:09:04. > :09:07.care of tomorrow. The owners of the building include the Tottenham

:09:07. > :09:10.manager Harry Redknapp. Permission had been granted to turn it into

:09:10. > :09:14.flats. Investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of the fire.

:09:14. > :09:19.the moment there is no evidence whatsoever that this is linked in

:09:19. > :09:23.any way to any civil disturbances that have happened round the

:09:23. > :09:29.country. Until the fire damaged building is made safe, the main

:09:29. > :09:33.seafront road, and a number of side roads will remain shut. Demolition

:09:33. > :09:42.experts will move in tomorrow morning, to start making the

:09:42. > :09:46.building safe, that work will start at 6.00 tomorrow morning. Thank you.

:09:46. > :09:49.Luxury consider manufacturer Rolls- Royce based at good wood is

:09:49. > :09:53.expanding its bespoke operation to meet customer demand. The company

:09:54. > :10:02.experts its current team of 25 experts to double by the end of

:10:02. > :10:07.2011. The team will design and develop parts on request. Stay with

:10:07. > :10:11.us, later, Alexis will be here with the weather. Roger Johnson is at

:10:11. > :10:15.Cowes. The fifth day of the world's biggest sailing regatta and you are

:10:15. > :10:20.right. Plenty of breeze out for the sailor, among them on the water a

:10:20. > :10:28.couple of royals who have been in the news recently and some famous

:10:28. > :10:33.faces. Find out who later on. An air force family from Hampshire has

:10:33. > :10:37.been at kous with a vital mission. Trying to recruit bone Marlow

:10:37. > :10:41.donors. David and Lou Hannard's son Alex has a rare condition that can

:10:41. > :10:49.only be cured by a bone marrow transplant. But finding a match is

:10:49. > :10:56.not easy. In among the crowds at Cowes today, a family looking for a

:10:56. > :11:01.life saver. Nine-year-old Alex has CGD. A rare immune deficiency which

:11:01. > :11:05.makes infection potentially lethal. His body has no defence against

:11:05. > :11:10.bacteria and it is everywhere. Bacteria and fungus is everywhere,

:11:10. > :11:16.so play grounds with bark chip, grass cuttings, leave, lake, river,

:11:16. > :11:20.ponds, lots of things at school that he can't take part in, no

:11:20. > :11:26.school trip, so very restrictive. The family's linked forces with the

:11:26. > :11:31.Anthony Nolan Trust. Recruiting potential bone marrow donors during

:11:31. > :11:36.Cowes week. Saliva is analysed and details are record on a UK data

:11:36. > :11:40.base which has 400,000 potential donors. If a match is found, donors

:11:40. > :11:45.give blood in a similar patrol seedure. We have had a great

:11:45. > :11:49.response, particularly among the sailors. The Anthony Nolan are

:11:49. > :11:53.aiming for young men at the moment, between 18 and 30. We have a great

:11:54. > :12:00.captive audience here. If ots of finding a match for Alex are small.

:12:00. > :12:05.But they increase with each new recruit. -- odds. If you think you

:12:05. > :12:09.would like to help, and try to help Alex in particular, you can find

:12:09. > :12:15.more information about registering as a potential donor on the Anthony

:12:15. > :12:19.Nolan website. That helps anybody looking for a donor. The skyline of

:12:19. > :12:24.one of the south's most beautiful towns has been restored. Today

:12:24. > :12:28.marked the completion of a project to build a new flesh or spire for

:12:28. > :12:36.Arundel Cathedral. Conducting the topping out ceremony today required

:12:36. > :12:40.just a bit of effort. As bishops go, the Right Rev rand Connery is

:12:40. > :12:46.particularly nimble. He climbed ladder after ladder to conduct a

:12:46. > :12:51.short service in a very high place. It's a rare, rare treat. You would

:12:51. > :12:55.never get the chance to do it again, so I am thrilled. It was all to

:12:55. > :13:04.mark Arundel Cathedral's new flesh, a slender spire rising from the

:13:04. > :13:07.roof. We ask the Lord to bless this flesh. Make it holy. A new flesh

:13:07. > :13:12.had to be built and installed after it was discovered the original one

:13:12. > :13:18.was in a bad way. The existing steel structure was rusted out.

:13:18. > :13:24.There was eight legs coming down, and five or six of those legs were

:13:24. > :13:28.corroded to the extent of 95%. is not good It is not good. It was

:13:28. > :13:32.precarious up there. The flesh was blessed with holy water and coins

:13:32. > :13:36.from this year were placed on top of it to mark its completion. It

:13:36. > :13:41.has taken a few pennys to get to this point, renewing the flesh has

:13:41. > :13:44.cost more than a quarter of a million pounds but it means this

:13:44. > :13:48.landmark is preserved. Whenever r Erne will lock across and see

:13:48. > :13:51.Arundel and look at the Cathedral and the castle and think it's a

:13:51. > :13:57.fairytale town really. So again we need to care for it and presifrt

:13:57. > :14:02.and do our best to keep it. today's service was a once in a

:14:02. > :14:10.lifetime event. The new flesh will last more than 100 year, helping

:14:10. > :14:16.keep the skyline timeless. Unusual topping out ceremony. He needed a

:14:16. > :14:21.head for heights. There was a royal visit on the Isle of Wight to name

:14:21. > :14:27.a new lifeboat. The Princess Royal was the guest of hon Knorr nor. It

:14:27. > :14:32.marked the opening of the lifeboat station which replaced a previous

:14:32. > :14:36.Victorian building. It the boat is named Alfred Williams in memory of

:14:36. > :14:41.a skip refer Gosport. It was funded after a donation of 1.8 million

:14:41. > :14:45.from a couple who were friends with Mr Williams. Our changing

:14:45. > :14:50.facilities is much better. The boat's bigger and better. And

:14:50. > :14:55.faster so it gives us the ability to get on the scene quicker so it

:14:55. > :14:59.makes rescuing people's lives easier for us. Now a bit of a royal

:14:59. > :15:03.affair with the Princess Royal there and also her daughter was

:15:03. > :15:09.there. As indeed is the lovely Roger Johnson there, not of course

:15:09. > :15:15.you fit into that royal affair bit but good to see you. I have got

:15:15. > :15:22.blue blood... I wish. A great day's sailing as you quite rightly said,

:15:22. > :15:26.and as you can see by the boats back here in the yacht haven the

:15:26. > :15:32.fifth day of Cowes week has been a blowy one, lots of stuff drying out

:15:32. > :15:37.on the deck. Lots of things broken for many boats. Some stiff breezes.

:15:37. > :15:41.You mention the Royal, she is indeed here in Cowes. She was

:15:41. > :15:45.involved with that lifeboat, tomorrow, she will be on the

:15:45. > :15:49.starting platform at the royal yacht squadron starting the D class,

:15:49. > :15:53.the largest class here at Cowes week and she will be firing the gun

:15:53. > :15:57.to get them under way in their centenary race. Her daughter is

:15:57. > :16:01.here too. She was one of a number of celebrities taking part in the

:16:01. > :16:05.headline eevent of the day. The Artemis challenge for the open 60

:16:05. > :16:11.yachts and they needed somebody to help them with a good eye for the

:16:11. > :16:17.weather. Who could they get, none other than Alexis. Ewan McGregor

:16:17. > :16:21.known for his starring roles in Trainspotting and Star Wars swapped

:16:21. > :16:26.Tinseltown to race round the Isle of Wight We are trying to win the

:16:26. > :16:31.prize money, to give to my charity UNICEF because they need a lot of

:16:31. > :16:36.help with the east African appeal. I have never done anything like

:16:36. > :16:43.this, raising -- racing yachts. I have never been on anything like

:16:43. > :16:48.this. He joined the British round the world skipper Alex Thompson on

:16:48. > :16:54.his boat hue Hugo boss He will get a bit of a shock. It is going to be

:16:54. > :16:59.exciting. He wasn't the only well- known face in the race. Zara

:16:59. > :17:06.Phillips was with Dee Caffari onboard Artemis. Dee is competitive.

:17:06. > :17:12.It will be good to get out there, and go and beat the other guys.

:17:12. > :17:17.was a battle between knight and royalty. Or just simply boys versus

:17:17. > :17:20.girls. The girls are going to show the boys how it is done. Are you

:17:20. > :17:26.excited? Yes Artemis challenge is the high light so we will see how

:17:27. > :17:32.we get on. In a with less than a minute half to go they are getting

:17:33. > :17:37.the boat ready. It will be a gruelling 50 miles round the island.

:17:37. > :17:45.So if you are not one for sailing to put this into perspective these

:17:45. > :17:50.are like the Formula One of the sea. The fastest boats on the planet.

:17:50. > :17:55.Hugo boss recorded a top seed speed of 25 knots after coming round the

:17:55. > :17:59.neetles. It was a fast and furious day but knight over the two boats

:17:59. > :18:07.won the race. First and second place went to two French boats.

:18:07. > :18:11.Hugo boss came in third and Artemis fourth. I think she enjoyed herself.

:18:11. > :18:15.She will be back with the let -- weather later. Summer sport

:18:15. > :18:20.continuing as Cowes week is on, big day in cricket. We will have some

:18:20. > :18:23.scores for you but news that the Hampshire batsman Michael Lumb has

:18:23. > :18:28.decided to leave the county. He will go at the end of the season.

:18:28. > :18:35.He won't play for Hampshire because he has has a long-term ankle injury.

:18:35. > :18:45.So to the scores. First day Hampshire playing for pride now,

:18:45. > :19:02.

:19:02. > :19:06.day interrupted by the weather at Football. Big night in the Carling

:19:06. > :19:10.Cup last night. Shane Long has completed hi move as you know from

:19:10. > :19:14.Reading to West Bromwich. He could make his debut against Manchester

:19:14. > :19:24.United at the weekend, if those games go ahead, because you will

:19:24. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:38.know that the civil diso beans -- Of the games that did take place,

:19:38. > :19:44.we had a couple of big winners. Bourm dispelled the disappointment

:19:44. > :19:50.of opening day defeat at Charlton. Mark Pugh's le reflected free-kick

:19:50. > :19:54.put on their their way. Another set piece, doubled the Cherry's lead.

:19:54. > :20:01.Shaun Cooper finishing from a corner as Lee Bradbury's training

:20:01. > :20:07.ground orchestration paid off T third goal came from a defence pass

:20:07. > :20:11.from Mark Pugh. The final two goals came late in the game. This one

:20:11. > :20:15.from Taylor was memorable for the fact it was his first for the club.

:20:15. > :20:25.His second came just two minutes later. A composed finish to round

:20:25. > :20:30.off a thumping 5-0 win. Southampton sold Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for

:20:30. > :20:37.14 million. The man many thing has been signed to replace him scored

:20:37. > :20:42.his first goal since a summer move from Holland. Torquay equalised but

:20:42. > :20:48.Saints went back in front. Ricky Lambert with a free-kick. The

:20:48. > :20:58.victory was confirmed with two late goals. Chaplow squeezing in the

:20:58. > :21:02.third before helping set up the next for Fort. Brighton welcomed

:21:02. > :21:08.former landlords Gillingham to their new home. After Buckley had

:21:08. > :21:14.been fouled in the area, Albion saw them off, thanks to an Ashley

:21:14. > :21:17.Baaned penalty. No such good fortune for Portsmouth, one of six

:21:38. > :21:42.the flags and banners on the rigging here. There are really big

:21:48. > :21:55.in Weymouth, going through the Olympic test event, but this one is

:21:55. > :21:58.the real beast of the regatta. And the team origin, because the

:21:58. > :22:02.British America's Cup challenge is no more, their boat is here, so

:22:02. > :22:09.they are out on the water. Tomorrow we won't be seeing anything as big

:22:17. > :22:19.More tomorrow night. I look for Bard to that. That is the wonderful

:22:28. > :22:32.does your village need money? Listen up, because villagers across

:23:13. > :23:18.loss of local amenities can rip the heart out of village life, yet we

:23:18. > :23:21.know there are people living there who have brilliant ideas that could

:25:16. > :25:21.What a great view to wake up to. A beautiful scene of a summer's day.

:25:21. > :25:26.Paul took this photo, while on a tandem ride this morning. I assume

:25:26. > :25:30.he stopped otherwise there would have been an accident. Yes, lovely

:25:30. > :25:34.sunny conditions. Breezy but we will see increasing cloud cover

:25:34. > :25:38.overnight tonight. And that could give the possibility of some

:25:38. > :25:42.outbreaks of rain. It is from this massive cloud moving in, it is a

:25:42. > :25:47.weather front, it will produce outbreaks of rain. Not even will

:25:47. > :25:50.see the wet conditions, some places could stay dry. One or two clear

:25:51. > :25:56.spells, but with that cloud cover overhead it will be a mild night. A

:25:56. > :26:01.lot milder than last night with lows of 14, 15. Cooler in the

:26:01. > :26:06.countryside. These are values in towns and cities. So to start the

:26:09. > :26:15.heavier bursts were for most we will see light showers and

:26:15. > :26:20.temperatures up to 21C. Perhaps some late evening sunshine. So a

:26:20. > :26:25.dry end to tomorrow night, cloud will increase, mist and murg is

:26:25. > :26:31.possible, the winds will be a lot lighter than today. Temperatures

:26:31. > :26:36.will stay mild. So an uncomfortable night for sleeping. Low pressure is

:26:36. > :26:42.not far away. It stays with us, a squeeze on the isobars so the winds

:26:42. > :26:46.will be brisk. Yet, another weather front pushes eastwards through the

:26:46. > :26:50.day on Friday, Saturday night will be a damp one as well. Saturday

:26:50. > :26:53.daytime a damp start but improving picture. As we head into Sunday,

:26:53. > :26:58.probably the best day of the weekend to enjoy the dry conditions.

:26:58. > :27:02.Sunny spells and feeling fresher so a decent day all in all. Here is

:27:02. > :27:07.your summary, a damp start. Brighter later on and a for the

:27:07. > :27:11.rest of the week. Rain about tomorrow. Maybe the odd rumble of

:27:11. > :27:15.thunder. We could have heavy shower, on Friday the chance of a few

:27:15. > :27:19.showers and that is the case on Saturday. The winds, gradually die

:27:19. > :27:24.down towards Sunday and the sunshine makes a return. The long

:27:24. > :27:29.range forecast suggests it will be dry and bright for next week. Thank
